IMac Mouse Freezing
I turn on my mac and it's set to automatically log in as my dad. I always then log in as my self because many things are different in his, in a bad way. So I logout and as soon as it shows the login screen the mouse freezes. It works and then stops there. Why? How can I fix it?
Thanks in advanced.
Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for your mouse freezing issue (might be directory corruption).
It also could be the following;
The original Apple Pro mouse cable frays in the chord just as it exits the mouse, over time, and shorts out causing symtoms similar to yours. You can't see the fray by looking at it thru the exterior covering. This can happen to third party mice over time too.
Mine does it. I plugged it into a different port, so the chord exits the mouse in a different direction, and have had very few freezes since. Once I get over my frugalness (cheapness!) I'll buy a new one.
So, try a known good mouse to see if that's the problem. If you still have trouble post back!
Cheers!

In addition to my iMac, I have a Power Mac G4 (10.4.11 Tiger) which of course is pre-Intel. I can boot up and use for about 5 minutes before the mouse freezes. I believe something is
overheating. What would that be - so I can have repairs done? The machine is the Digital Audio version, M7627LL/A and Serial Number XB******KXQ.
<Edited By Host>Hello USME,
'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.
Good luck!... Jon -
My IMac shunts down or the mouse freezes seems to be after installing OS Lion
my IMac shuts down and I have to unplug it and turn on again or the mouse freezes and I have to restart the computer
I tried that solution, but it didn't help in my case. There is a workaround that usually works, though:
When the RMB stops working, use the "screen zoom" function (ctrl + mouse scroll ball) to zoom in to the screen a bit, then zoom out again. This usually makes the RMB start working again, at least for a while. If it doesn't help, then rebooting the computer usually does.
Still looking for a more permanent solution though. -
Late 2012 iMac locking (mouse freeze) on Sleep
Hello guys, i don't really know what's happening to my 27-inch, Late 2012 (2,9 GHz Intel Core i5)
Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C1021) Fusion Drive 1,12 T
This problem began yesterday after this mac has worked for nearly 1 and 1/2 year without problem!
iMac goes on sleep and when I turn it on again the monitor works, the keyboard works..but the mouse is freeze! I cant do anything..it takes more than 1 minute to wake up again.
I dont really know what's happening.. my iMac is like new, no third party software, the Fusion Drive 1,12 TB is almost empty (968,24 GB free 1,11TB)
Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions.Hello Rocken

Original Imac mouse lagging and freezing
My original wired Imac mouse is lagging and sometimes freezes. I have very little knowledge so please be specific with a possible solution. If I need to go someplace or type something in, please give me directions. I greatly appreciate it. I do not have a second monitor plugged in.
if it's a wired mouse it's probably a Mighty Mouse. The first thing I'd recommend doing is cleaning the ball. Get a clean sheet of white paper and vigorously roll the ball on the paper for about 30-40 seconds, this is intended to dislodge any dirt stuck on the ball. If that doesn't do it please do a SMC reset:
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Is this the infamous iMac interface freeze?
I have a brand new Aluminum iMac that's less than a month old. After reading about other new iMac owners experiencing Mac OS freezing on them because of a possible graphics driver issue, I decided not to do the iMac 1.1 update while I was on Tiger. My iMac has been working great with no freezing or lockups.
After upgrading to Leopard I'm noticing that my machine will not wake from the screensaver properly. I thought at first it might not be waking from sleep, so I turned off automatic sleep, so only the screensaver will come on, and monitor energy save.
For example, this morning I left the house with the iMac on. 15 minutes later the screen saver came on, then another 15 minutes later, the display was automatically turned off. I came back a couple of hours later and moved the mouse. The display came back on, and I can see the mouse arrow move along with the mouse. The rest is a blank screen. The screensaver (arabesque) isn't showing. I let it sit for 10 minutes with no change.
I ssh'ed into the iMac and didn't noticed anything out of the ordinary doing a "ps". Nothing was eating up the CPU cycles or taking up unusually large amount of RAM.
I tried to turn the iMac off by holding down the power button. This actually ended up putting it into sleep mode. When I pressed the power button again, it woke up from its sleep and gave me a login window. I can move my mouse but it doesn't respond to clicks. Also unfortunately I can't type my password. My keyboard is dead. The mouse is connected through the keyboard, and the keyboard's caps lock key responds.
As a test I tried using VNC to get into the iMac, but unfortunately I can't type my password in that way either.
I also tried plugging in a different mouse and keyboard at this point, and same problem.
My only way out is to hold down the power button again to shut it off, and start it back up from scratch.
Is this the iMac interface freeze people are talking about? Or is this a new problem? Anyone know what's going on? Thanks for your help!I should also add that at the time of the freeze, I only had Entourage, Quicksilver, Adobe Illustrator CS3, Adium, and Suitcase Fusion running.
Also this problem only seems to happen when the machine's idle for several hours. If I try to resume right after the monitor energy saver kicks in, I'm able to revive it. -
IMac 2011 freezes regularly but no solution?
Hi,
My friend has a 2011 iMac, running Snow Leopard (latest version). Recently, he told me that his iMac would freeze, either while surfing the net, downloading, Facebook, or just using applications. This freezing would force him to shut down and restart, where it sometimes freezes again about an hour later. During these freezes, the mouse becomes inactive. Sometimes when it falls asleep, it also freezes on wake, so he has to shut it down and restart.
I suggest he take it in to the Apple Store for a Genius appointment. The Genius conducted what sounds like an extreme stress test and couldn't recreate the error. Running multiple Youtube videos, and apparently UNIX script in the background that sounds like it was testing the CPU. Despite all this stress testing and the Genius' Apple Hardware Test, everything seemed OK. His only suggestion was to "turn it off" more frequently. The only other suggestion was a clean install of Snow Leopard (or other).
Since then, the freezing continues. My friend has even run maintenace programs like Cocktail, etc, and run several SMART diagnostics to ensure the hard drive is OK. Still, I guess it could be the hard drive.
Any advice? Thanks in advance. Thanks for your help, baltwo. I've asked my friends to keep the logs. Here are two that he gave me.

magic mouse freezes and freezes apps and the whole computer. another keyboard and mouse work fine. yes, I changed to new batteries on both.

Mouse freezing frequently?
I am working in iMovie 4 (home movies for the grandparents for Christmas). As I hold the mouse down to scroll through a clip, the mouse freezes. Completely stops working. Cursor frozen. Most of the time, if I unplug the mouse from the keyboard and plug it back in it works again. However, sometimes, I need to plug it into another USB port on the computer and it works. And sometimes, only a restart gets me going again.
The longer I hold down the mouse for scrolling, the more likely it will freeze.
I have 5 Mac mice in the house. It works the same on all 5. Changing the mouse does not make it work any better.
Really frustrating. Any clues?
iMac Mac OS X (10.3.9) 768MB RAM, 800 MHz30 gigs left on a 60 gig drive. I'm using a LaCie external firewire 250GB drive for the movies.
Ran repair permissions. Lots of issues, but it seemed to clear them up. Ran disk first aid, no problems found.
I got that horrible grey box that said my computer needed to be restarted about 8 hours into burning a DVD today.
I just put in 512MB of new memory. It showed up correctly when I put it in, but now when I check it it only shows up as 256MB...
Maybe an intermittent hardware problem? -
Why does my iMac keep freezing?
Problem description:
21.5 inch Mid 2010 iMac constantly freezes. Problem 1st reported to Apple a couple years ago when computer would freeze, only mouse/pointer would remain active, though clicking did nothing. Now computer works for as little as ½ hour before freezing completely - mouse/keyboard don’t respond, only way out is to hold power button and restart.
Uninstalled Sophos after reading other posts, still freezes.

IMac (still) freezes - console: What is "unknown SIGSEGV code 0" ?
Some weeks ago I was writing that my iMac started freezing at irregular intervals. At some point I thought that had found the error - unfortunately it still occurs, though.
Most of the time what happens is this:
* I draw with my Wacom Intuso 2 in Photoshop CS4. Suddenly nothing works anymore. The mouse Cursor can still be moved (sometimes not even that any more), and iTunes or webradio like Jango still plays what's stored in memory.
Neither Finder nor the dock, expose or spaces work any more.
* I can't put the computer in sleep mode. All I can do is force-power-off by holding power for 2 seconds
* I restart the computer and it works like nothing has happened. Sometimes it stays like that for 15 minutes sometimes I can work several hours or a full day without anything weird happening.
* there are no graphic glitches so I don't suspect the graphics chip (any more)
Just to get this out of the way:
I have an itel Based iMac 24", 3.06GHz DualCore, 2GB RAM.
It's a work machine: Adobe software, Cinema4D and ZBrush.
Worked absolutely flawless before. Works stable most of the time on Windows. Crashes are different from those on OSX if they occur though.
It all started shortly after my mac choked on a security update during install (which had me force-reset the computer the hard way). I installed the Update manually but the freezes still occur.
I have fixed access-rights (several times).
I have performed an intensive system check from the OS disc - nothing found.
I keep the system updated as soon as there are new updates available.
When monitoring the temperatures the only two values above what I think reasonable at times are Graphics (up to 72°C) and power supply (up to 75°C).
All other values are well within normal limits. The Mac stands freely and not to close to any wall. No heat source close to it, no window with too much sunlight either ....
I've already reset the PRAM. No effect.
Now I'm not too familiar with the console but checking the 'system.log' shows something like this very often:
* Feb 8 15:59:09 noname kernel[0]: unknown SIGSEGV code 0
* Feb 8 15:59:39: --- last message repeated 3 times ---
Is this something that could be crashing my mac?
Or does this mean nothing, really and the fault still lies somewhere else?
I'm really helpless, any more. My only hope is that it's no hardware malfunction and that my Mac won't die on me over the next few months.
Thanks for any help or advice.

Whether or not that will help with your freezing issues I can't say. If not, I've seen anecdotal information that suggests issues with Wacom tablets, but again I can't say with certainty that it involved in your problem, but you might try working for a bit, if you can, with the tablet disconnected and see if that has any effect on the frequency of the freezes.
Hope this helps. -
My brand new iMac keeps freezing?
Hi,
I have an iMac 27" late 2013 model, running OS 10.9.4, with 3.5 GHz i7, 32 GB of RAM and a 3 TB SATA hard disk drive (with 2.18 TB of storage remaining).
I bought it less than 2 months ago from the Apple Online store, and have been using it up until now with no problems.
Recently, the iMac began to freeze, at first the keyboard and mouse freeze, music playing in the background stops and no functions work, even after leaving the computer idle for 10mins - the only work around for this is to hold down the power button and reboot.
I generally run music production software, iTunes, browse with safari, and use Parallels Virtual Machine running Windows 8.1 for gaming (obviously not all at the same time). I've had Parallels on my computer since the beginning, and install games often, but only recently my version of Windows 8.1 completely stopped working for absolutely no reason (failed to boot - EFI booting error would come on screen), so I had to fully re-install my version of Windows 8.1 on to the computer. This was a worry as I thought something may be wrong with my hard drive, but my Mac OS still ran perfectly fine, UNTIL it began freezing.
As I said, I don't run all these programs at the same time, and usually only about 10-15 GB of CPU memory is being used when I am most active (checked with activity monitor). I've verified my disk in disk utilities and repaired permissions and there don't seem to be any errors.
What could be causing my mac to freeze? How should I go about finding a solution? I've been thinking about bringing it to an Apple Retail Store but have doubts it will freeze while in an appointment, as the freezing is infrequent and intermittent, but it is completely ANNOYING.
Any advice would be amazing,
Regards,
hmforwardIf the iMac is only two months old it is still under warranty. Rather then messing around with it yourself you should just let Apple deal with it.
If you really want to try diagnosing it yourself you will need to remove all the extra software you have installed, especially the games and work from a clean machine adding things back a little at at time to see what effect it has on the system. You can also try running Etresoft: EtreCheck A free app that will examine your system. It may help to locate software that us causing the problem.
But as I wrote above given the age of the system you really should let Apple deal with it.
regards -
Why does my new iMac keep freezing for no apparent reason?
Why does my new iMac keep freezing? This usually happens when it is not being used and is particularly frustrating when I do need to use it and ahve to switch off and then on again and wait for it to reboot.
I am not computer literate so keep any answers as simple and idiot friendly as possible. I treat it like a car. If I put in the key and turn the ignition on and the enginesprings into life I am content. If not.............. well!In order to provide any help we need to understand a little bit more about the problem you are experiencing.
You indicated the issue occurs when the sytem is not being used. Does this mean that you stop working on the system and the system 'goes to sleep' where the screen goes black, but when you need to wake it back up by pressing keys on the keyboard or clicking the mouse the system doesn't wake back up? To test for this issue open the System Preferences and click on the Energy Saver preferences. See the 'Computer Sleep' slider to the far right 'Never' setting. You can set the 'Display sleep' setting to any number you prefer. With these settings see if the issue still occurs and let us know the results. If it resolves the issue then give Apple a call and let them know you are unable to wake the system when it goes to sleep. You shouldn't be having that issue. -
BT keyboard and mouse freeze one or two times a day
New iMac, started freezing up about once or twice a day after a couple of weeks. Took a few occurrences to realise it was a KB/mouse problem rather than the computer itself. looking at forum posts it seems to be a common problem, though not often both devices at once. Powering the Mac off and then on again fixes the problem every time. Battery strength is good on both devices.
As suggested in several posts, I've tried removing the BT .plist file and rebooting. Assistant took some time to relocate the KB and mouse but managed eventually. However problem still recurring.
Next time it froze, plugged in a Logitech mouse which worked ok and the BT mouse started working immediately too (why would it do that?), but not the keyboard. BT Preferences say both devices connected, and paired and discoverable. Tried to run Set Up, says 'not found' (for mouse also, even though it's working). Turning the Mac off and on again restored normality.
Hung again twice today already. Following another post advice, I've removed Bluetooth from the Networking list (although it wasn't connected to anything). But it's just hung again while i was typing this (at least powering off then on again doesn't lose any data)
I'm new to Macs, so please excuse my descriptions of the problem being more anecdotal than technical. If anyone can suggest a logical course of action to resolve this problem, I'd be grateful.I spent some time around to read all posts here and there.
I've got a brand new 20" imac with BT mighty mouse & a wired keyboard
My mouse used to freeze once or twice a day.
I used to type ctrl & space bar to open spotlight, type "bt" to get acces to bt panel in pref system, which was enough to reconnect.
I found two issues when reading things in forums:
Some people are facing a hardware issue with the metallic part behind the mouse cover being too folded to make a proper contact
Some other, like me, are facing a software issue. The problem appeared juste before 10,5,6 release, with an airport package.
I downloaded on apple website an older airport package and installed this:
airport utility.app 5.3.2 (instead of 5.4.1)
airport base station agent.app 1.5 (instead of 1.5.1)
com.apple.airportbasestationagent.plist dated 29may2008
These files are to be found there:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortUtility_5_3_2_forLeopard
And you'll need "pacifist" shareware to be allowed to install older versions
A bit complicate, but 3 days now and I didn't have any freezing!
