IMac New Computer Installation

Transfer info from 2008 Imac to a new one?

Very simple if you have been backing up the old computer. Use a Time Machine backup or bootable clone backup. When you turn on the new iMac for the first time it will ask if you are migrating from another Mac, choose yes. Then if you are using TM on the old machine choose the TM option and follow the on-screen instructions. If you backup using a bootable clone then choose that drive and follow the on-screen instructions. If you have already received the new iMac and ignored Setup Assistant instructions then you have a second chance with Migration Assistant. Migration Assistant is located in Applications - Utilities - Migration Assistant. Open that app and follow the instructions. MA and SA are cousins, similar but different. The primary difference is MA will create a new  user account when it migrates your data,  you will need to log into that account to access your data, settings, apps etc...

  • Reinstalling CS4 on a new computer - installer database is corrupt -fix?

I purchased Adobe Creative  Suite Web Standard (CS4) when it was brand new. I have a new computer I need to install my software on and when I run autoplay I receive an error message that says "Installer Database is Corrupt" and to contact you. How do I install the software? I am using Windows 7.

Ljdurden please see Error "...Installer Database is Corrupt..." when you install Adobe Creative Suite 4 or point product for information on how to resolve your current error.  It is likely your current User account is facing a file permission failure with Caps directory preventing the licensing database to be updated.
Did you migrate/transfer/copy over any applications to this new computer?

  • 10.4.8 for New Computer Installable on Old Computer?

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro to replace/upgrade a 3+ year old PowerBook G4 running 10.2.8. Can I use the OS install disks for 10.4.8 that came with the MacBook Pro to install Tiger on my old PowerBook (it has sufficient RAM, HD space and other technical requirements)? If so, is there anything special I need to do to avoid losing any applications or other items on the older PowerBook? (I have already successfully transferred everything from the PowerBook to the new MacBook Pro.) Thanks for any assistance.

"Can I use the OS install disks for 10.4.8 that came with the MacBook Pro to install Tiger on my old PowerBook"
No. The MacBook is Intel based. The Powerbook is not. An OS for Intel macs will not install on PowerPC based Macs. besides, even if you could it would be illegal, as you'd be violating the single-user license agreement that accompanies the MacBook.

  • I copied all of my CD's onto my iMac's hard drive. Now I'd like to buy a new iMac and am wondering how to transfer the music I have loaded on  my iMac from CD's on to my new computer w/o  going through the process of loading them into my iTunes Library.

I have copied all of my CD's, probably over 100, on to my iMac, through iTunes and now am considering buying a new iMac. Would like to be able to transfer what's in my music library w/o having to recopy all of the CD's. Any thoughts? Can I do it throught the iCloud or do I need to buy and external storage device?
    Thanks Brenda

When you buy your new iMac you will be able to have the installation process transfer all your applications, data (including music, pictures, documents, etc) and settings to your new computer. In the past that was done via Firewire. I'm not entirely sure of the process with the new iMacs that don't have firewire. I think it can be done via ethernet and probably via tha thunderbolt cord using a firewire adapter but you'll want to check that out.
With the your new computer properly connected to your old computer, the initial booting of the new computer will include the ability to move everything over.
If for some reason you don't want to do that (smart if you have some horrible software issue that is causing problems) you can connect your old computer to the new one and start it in Target Disk mode where it will be seen as a hard drive. You can then manually copy over all your music and import that into iTunes (and any other data you want).
Somebody here will surely point you to directions for connecting an older iMac with no Thunderbolt to a newer iMac with no Firewire.

  • I upgraded my iMac and need to switch license to new computer without access to old computer?

I recently upgraded my iMac and had Photoshop CS6 migrated to my new computer. I'm unable to use photoshop now since I wasn't able to uninstall the software on the old computer. How can I switch my license from one computer to the next without access to the old computer or the access code?

If you bought it from Adobe, your serial number should be under the Adobe ID you used to buy it. Even if you did not get it from Adobe, if it was registered with Adobe, the serial number would be under "My Products" including the serial number of the product you upgraded from.
You can download the CS6 installer from here: Download CS6 products

  • Installation on a New Computer with no CD input?

I recently obtained a new computer (iMac 21.5) that has no CD input. I have a disk version of Photoshop Elements 6 with the serial number. Is there a way to download this program without having to buy a new version?

There is no download available for that version.  The oldest available is version 7.  You might be able to copy the installation file(s) to some other removable media that works with your machine and install with that.

Alibutlerdesigns you will use the same process to install on your second computer.  You can copy the installation files using a USB drive if you do not wish to download the installation files again.

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. Nevermind, I got it working.
I ended up extracting the new vob within MPEG Streamclip, which gave me an m2v and an aiff audio. I multiplexed those two back together in FFMpegX which gave me a complete VIDEO_TS folder with BUP and IFO files I needed.

    Hey there Frank0619,
If you have not been able to install iTunes because the Windows Installer service is not available, I would recommend the troubleshooting in the following troubleshooting to help.
    Issues installing iTunes for Windows
    These in particular:
Make sure you have an administrator account.
To install iTunes, you'll need to log in to your computer with an administrator password. If you're not sure if you have an administrator account, read Windows 7: How do I log on as an administrator? You could also refer to your computer's help system, contact your IT department, or visit support.microsoft.com for assistance.
Install the latest Microsoft Windows updates.
To download the latest updates, visit the Microsoft Windows Update website. iTunes for Windows requires Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 with the latest Service Pack installed. If you can’t install the updates, refer to your computer's help system, contact your IT department, or visit support.microsoft.com for assistance.
Download the latest version of iTunes.

    Disable conflicting software.

The activation server for Audition 3 was shut down by Adobe several years ago.
You now need to download the non-activation version provided by Adobe here
