IMac no longer boots up to windows partition?

Hi,
I have a problem where my I installed Windows 7 on my iMac and set it to automatically boot up to the Windows partitionwhen turning on the computer. Suddenly, it's not doing that anymore. It boots up to the Apple partition and when I want to choose partitions, I have to hold down "Alt" upon booting up. I've always had to hold down "Alt" to choose partitions so that's not a problem. The problem is it doesn't automatically boot up to the Windows partition, as I originally set it.
Anyone encounter this problem and have any advice?

On OSX go to System Preferences the Startup Volume and reset your Windows 7 partition to be the default.
On the next reboot it should automatically boot into Windows.
A PRAM-reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1895 can be the cause of this behavior.

After Boot Camp partition, iMac no longer boots

Hi, I have a 20" iMac Core Duo (the first Intel Mac off the line) running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I ran the Boot Camp Assistant to partition my hard drive, and it successfully created the "BOOTCAMP" drive. When it asked for my installation CD, I tried loading a Windows installation partition through a USB hard drive, but the assistant would not recognize it as an install disk. So, I closed out of the assistant early, leaving the Boot Camp partition in place. Eventually, I rebooted my machine in an attempt to boot directly from the USB drive and resume installation.
However, I found the machine will not boot at all. It powers on normally, makes the startup sound, but after a few seconds I'm left with just a flashing folder and question mark icon. Holding down Option-key at startup does nothing. Trying to boot from my Snow Leopard disc by holding down C or D during startup does nothing. Holding down Command-S does nothing. Holding down Shift-key does nothing. Resetting the PRAM does nothing.
What can I do? Is there some way I can access the on-board EFI to make sure the correct startup disk is selected? Why am I unable to boot from my CD drive?

On OSX go to System Preferences the Startup Volume and reset your Windows 7 partition to be the default.
On the next reboot it should automatically boot into Windows.
A PRAM-reset http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1895 can be the cause of this behavior.

Won't boot after resizing Windows partition

So I'm dual-booting Windows 7 with OSX using Boot Camp. The Windows partition had very little space left so I decided to go ahead and resize it. I first used Disk Utility inside OSX to shrink the size of the OSX partition. Worked like a beauty.
I then went into Windows and resized the Windows partition using Paragon's Partition Manager....big mistake.
I would gander a guess that in order to resize, the Paragon software has to reboot and boot into a partition it created. Which is all fine and good except I don't think (version 2010 of Partition Manager) the Mac bootup hardware likes this. Unfortunately, this seemed to have nuked my bootup of anything, including OSX.
Is there a way to recover/repair this without having to do wipe everything and reinstall?

Welcome to Apple Discussions,
You can boot to the Mac OS Install disk that came with the computer and run Disk Utility from from the disk to attempt to repair the Mac OS partition of the logical drive. If it can repair it then you may be able to boot.
Live partitioning is like doing open heart surgery on yourself. Its not a simple process. Doing it with a utility that isn't necessarily made for handling an HFS+ partition table (Like what the Mac OS uses) is tricker still.
Give Disk Utility a try. There are other directory repair programs out there (Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, etc.) that can do deeper levels of repair.
Were it my drive, I would probably just erase it and restore from backup (assuming you have all your data backed up and are confident that the backup is good). You don't want to keep working with a potentially damaged partition table. But thats just me.

Canon printer driver update - iMac no longer boots up

This morning my Mac displayed an update for my Canon MP560 printer. After the download and install my Mac no longer boots, it just hangs on the white apple logo. I have left it for ages and it rebooted itself but hangs again.

Booted from DVD and did repair permissions. Seems to have sorted it out now.

Windows partition ignored by macos, long boot times

So, after boot camp refused to resize my Windows partition, I decided to use the old standby of using GParted off of a linux live cd. I just kinda assumed there would be no problem, but after the fact I've discovered there could be some problems. The most specific thing I can find is that the "msftrees" flag will be set on the partition you make and that it can also cause some trouble with updating the GPT and MBR.
Anyway, here are my symptoms:
1. MacOS pretty much ignores the Windows partition (It's Windows 7). It doesn't appear in the startup menu at all and I don't have access to the drive. You might be able to mount it manually, I haven't tried.
2. Very slow boot times for windows. You can select the option to boot from the Windows partition by holding down option at boot, but the boot takes a very long time. When you select the windows partition, it goes to a blank screen with a blinking underscore character in the upper left for 2~3 minutes and then finally shows the windows loading screen and continues to boot normally.

MacBook Pro Won't Boot. Kernel Panic. Only Windows Partition Works

So one day I was using my mac when it froze for no apparent reason, i was just running iTunes, so i held the power key and it shut down. After a while, i turned it back on and it got to the apple but then i got a bunch of errors i guess, around the lines of kernel panic. So i went online and read other peoples problems but none of them seamed to work. It wont start up normally, not in safe mode, recovery drive wont boot, only the windows partition works. i reset my PRAM i think its called and that failed. someone online said to re-install lion. i dont have a lion recovery usb thingy, but i have a lion disk, but my disk drive no longer works due to hardware damage. so i need to back up my files from my mac partition and re-install lion OR just get rid of the Kernel Panic Thingy.
ps. everytime i try to boot mac, i get a different error message.
any help is greatly appreciated

Are you willing to lose the data that isn't backed up? If not, you have to try to back up now, before you do anything else.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup; 10.7 or later), from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup; 10.7.2 or later), or from your installation disc (C key at startup; 10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

Mac Pro trying to boot to windows partition by default

I recently attempted to install XP 64-bit with no luck on a second hard drive (Mac Drivers disc wouldn't recognize the 64-bit edition) so I went back into my main OS X installation and erased the partition and remade the entire second hard drive into a support HD for OS X for the time being. There should be no trace of a FAT32 partition.
But every time I boot the computer, if I don't hold Option, my MP tries to boot to the windows partition (even though it's not even there!) I know because it says in a little DOS message "Can't find disk, hit any key" or something like that. If I hold option I can easily boot to my one and only operating system, the original OS X installation, but it's just bugging me why that is happening, and happening by default!

If you install Boot Camp for Windows there will be a Startup Disk control panel that performs the same function when you are running Windows so you can reset the default startup to OS X.
OPTION booting is a temporary change meaning that the next restart will return to the previously set startup volume in Startup Disk. Startup Disk makes the switch permanent until you change it again using Startup Disk.

Windows partition wont' boot from internal secondary HDD? No bootable device error

Here is my scenario: I previously had a 500GB bootcamped HDD in my 2012 macbook pro. The boot camp partition was running windows 7 and the mac partition was running 10.9. I replaced my original HDD with a 250GB SSD, took out my optical drive, and replaced that (op drive) with my original HDD. When i boot from the main drive, the SSD, it successfully recognizes the HDD with the 2 different partitions on it. But when I try to boot into my windows partition(on the HDD) by holding option at startup and selecting the windows partition, I keep getting a black screen "No bootable device. Insert boot disk and hit any key". I tried installing rEFIt, but still no luck. Here is the output from partition inspector:

Please download Gdisk from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ . You do not have a valid MBR on disk1 so Windows will not boot, even though you can see the volume in OS X Finder on the HDD.
Use Gdisk to recreate a Hybrid MBR which includes GPT#4.
Here is an example. Please notice the spaces between 2,3 and 4.

I get a black screen after installing the bootcamp drivers on my newly created windows partition?

I am attempting to install windows 7 on my mid 2007 core 2 extreme iMac. I open bootcamp and do all of the steps except the usb flash drive drivers from apple because the server always fails to load. After restarting, I install windows 7 to the bootcamp partition, and the screen goes black during the "Completing Installation." I wait about an hour before shutting down and rebooting into my Mac partition. I use paragon ntfs for mac and go to the drivers folder and delete the atikmdag.sys file and restart. Booting into the windows partition, I get the error that says "Windows installation has failed because the system unexpectedly restarted. Click ok to restart and redo installation" or something along those lines. Instead of pressing ok, I press shift+f10 and open regedit. After opening regedit, I go into some registry file for the setup (I don't remember where this is located, although I can find it if needed), and I change a value from 3 to 1. After doing this and restarting, It boots regularly with a super low res screen but it boots without problem. I go to the apple website and download the appropriate bootcamp support software and install on my windows partition. After restarting, the screen is black again. I assume this is another video driver problem again because the black screen seems to always be video driver problems; however, its odd that the bootcamp support software would give me an incorrect video driver as it is directly from apple. Would this be the problem or does anyone know a fix? Any help is appreciated.

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 667mhz not 675mhz or 800mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed.

Boot camp and windows xp

i just purchased an imac and ran boot camp assistant to partition for a windows xp installment. somehow i managed to partion the entire drive (even though i specified the size) and that sent me into a nut roll to eventually erase the partition and then being able to reinstall mac os (nothing was booting). i have tried this again, and this time i can see the partition to install windows (c:/ partition #3 82 gb - even though i only did one partition through boot camp). anyway, i inserted the windows xp disk to install, it asked which partition and i directed to c:/ 82 gb fat32. it then warns me that i should not have 2 os's on the same partition. i am lost - any ideas?

i have the following on the screen:
E: partition 1 (unknown) 200 MB

unpartitioned space 128 MB
C: partition 3 {bootcamp} [fat32] 84885 MB
then, when i direct the installation to c (figuring fat 32 is windows and has empty windows folders in it), it says : you chose to install xp on a partition that contains another operating system. etc, etc.
i didn't want to continue because i didn't want to screw up my machine. i have since, through utilities, restored the drive to its original size and the partition has been removed. i will try again, using bootcamp to start over. any idea what went wrong or what i am doing wrong?

MBP FREEZES AFTER 10.4.6 UPDATE WITH WINDOWS PARTITION

Just updated software to 10.4.6, and rebooted the computer unattended. It booted on the Windows partition, and worked fine.
Just rebooted in Mac mode, and everything froze.
Had to reinstall the OS, from the original DVD. Did anyone experience the same problem.
I am reluctant now to install the 10.4.6 update.

I didn't really post to say I was smarter, or you were a dummy. When I read your post, and saw your signature that says you are running 10.4.5, I thought first of all, "how did you do that?" So I posted that that could be a huge problem.
Please don't think I wasn't anything more less than concerned. Noted you have been having issues (as others have) since the security update. There are numerous suggestions in other threads, but I don't know the solution to your situation. For me the update kiled my ability to change font color in Entourage! Hopefuly Apple will post a fix in the form of an update.

[SOLVED] Can't boot back into windows

Been a while since I had to install Arch but my previous PC died so I tried installing it on my new one. When I installed it last time, there was no EUFI and it was a simple Grub installation. When I installed it, I disabled eufi from my bios to legacy grub. I installed Arch like normal but os-probe didn't seem to work. Although it detected my OS, it did not make an entry for windows in the grub, When I re-enable EUFI from bios, it just goes straight to GRUB cmd line.

Your Windows installation is probably installed in UEFI mode.
So when you enable UEFI grub doesn't work correctly. And in legacy mode Windows won't boot.

Yea, I figured it out last night after spending hours on it. For anyone that might be having the same problem as me: Re-installed grub with os-prober and it detected windows successfully. Added the entry into grub correctly as well. But when I tried to boot into windows, it said my bcd was corrupted. Apparently when I was trying everything, I formatted the entire /boot partition so there was no way for windows to boot. After hours of trying to figure out how to restore the partition, I went into bios and re-enabled UEFI, safe boot, fast boot. It restored the /boot partition and let me get into windows. Then disabled safe boot and fast boot, booted arch live cd and installed gummiboot.

IMac no longer boots up to windows partition?
