IMac no longer recognizes MyBook after unplugging it without ejecting first

I recently got an iMac and had backed up my information to a MyBook external hard drive. It recognized it with no problem until I accidentally unplugged it before ejecting it. Now the MyBook doesn't show up at all, anywhere. How can I get my computer to re-recognize the MyBook?

Hi. Thank you for your response. I actually didn't get to test it out because before going to bed, I shut everything down, unplugged it, and said a prayer. (All of which I had done earlier in various combinations, except the prayer part.) This morning I plugged the computer in, turned it on, held my breath, and plugged the MyBook in - it recognized it and I downloaded everything onto my iMac before it could change its mind.
I'll keep a copy of your reply so that I know what to do the next time I pull a stunt like this.

IMac no longer recognizes bluetooth after installing XP

I just installed XP using Boot Camp 2.0, and now my computer no longer recognizes the bluetooth internal card (not in XP or OSx). When I go to system preferences, the bluetooth icon doesn't even show up and even when I go to "about this Mac" and look under bluetooth it says "No information found." Any ideas? Both in XP and OSx I have gotten a problem code 43...what does that mean??
This is my first Mac...so this is all new to me, but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Imac no longer recognizes external hard drive

my iMac no longer recognizes my external hard drive. An icon used to be on my desktop, at times it would disappear and come back, but it has remained elusive for the past couple of months and is NOWHERE to be found. It doesn't even show up in the Disk Utiity. I need my files!

Please Google, "Intel iMac SMC Reset" and follow the instructions. If the drive is OK this may solve it.

I found that if you open iMage Capture App that seems to trigger iPhoto to open and thew camera is connected. At least that happens with my camera. Good luck.

Since Mavricks installed: My Spotlight icon disappears from the menu bar, but the space stays there. If I click on the blank space where the
spotlight icon is supposed to be - the spotlight menu opens. So, for me, the icon is there, it works except that it is invisible at times. IF I do a re-start it is there. If I let the computer set, sleep or other wise stay on for days, the icon will hide and re-appear at random.

I may have totally screwed myself but...after installing Yosemite without checking first, my CS4 Design Premium suite wouldn't open. So I deinstalled it, but I only have disks for my old CS3. When I got the CS4 upgrade I downloaded it. What can I do??

I've used an external hard drive for my Time Machine back-up for a few years. After I upgraded to Snow Leopard recently, the Time Machine delayed. When I tried to select a disk, my external drive no longer appears (it says "None"). The USB and power are all plugged in.

IMac no longer recognizes my DVD player after upgrading to DVD Player 4.6

Hi,
Several days ago I upgraded to Tiger and then 2 days ago, through "software update" I upgraded to 10.4.3 and also upgraded to DVD Player 4.6
I just discovered that my computer no longer sees the DVD player and an inserted DVD doesn't show up anywhere (when I check under "Hardware" and then "Disc Burning" under "About This Mac" it says "No burning device was found."
I tried reinstalling the upgrade (DVD Player 4.6) but it says it can't because there's no valid DVD player in the system (my computer has a Superdrive and I've played and burned DVD's a plenty in the past several months).
Any help/info will be GREATLY appreciated!!

My external Western Digital MyBook hard drive can no longer be mounted. This problem seems to have started occurring after I upgraded my OS to 10.5.8 (my best guess). Have had the drive for 2 years and no problems up until now. I connect the drive via Firewire. Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Western Digital electronics aren't known for their longevity (hard drives themselves are fine). Can you attach the drive to another computer? You've tried all ports on your iMac?

IMac no Longer Recognizes External Hard Lacie Hard Drive via Firewire 800

It worked for 1 year. Time machine backed up fine. Over the past month it has gone in and out of recognizing the external Lacie d2 quadra via the Firewire800 port. I've tried turning off botht the iMac and the hard drive. unplugging both for 30 minutes. i can't get the external hard drive to connect in teh finder window anymore. should i buy a new firewire cable? is that the simple answer. Can these go bad?

You should try a new or different FireWire cable.
If the drive also has a USB 2.0, try connecting it with a USB cable. Does it work that way?
Also, try running Disk Utility (assuming the drive is seen the sidebar and able to be selected) and running +Repair Disk+ on the +First Aid+ tab. This procedure can take a long time on the drive that is used for the Time Machine archive.

My iMac no longer recognizes external firewire WD drives.

This has occured twice in the past few months. The first drive was a WD My Book Studio 2TB configured as Raid 1. The more recent occurance on a WD My Book 4TB configured as Raid 1 and housing iTunes :-( The later occurred after loading the latest Lion Update after the iMac rebooted. Error messages say neither of the drives are recognized. Based on my thought that the issue might have been generated by the drives not properly being dismounted on a shutdown, I swithed the drives over to a PC, successfully mounted them, and then dismounted them. They are still not recognized by the iMac. The Disk Utility gives me an error regardless if I try to mount or dismount the drives despite it indicating the drives are not mounted. The iTunes drive is backed up as well as the Mac; but, I do not know what to do to fix the WD drives and I am especially leary of connecting anymore firewire drives since this appears to be hapening way too often and I do not know why. Any help from a great sage would be greatly appreciated, especially if I can recover the two drives.

Try resetting the SMC.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Trying to make a clone backup of my internal HD but my iMac no longer recognizes my external HD.

Short story: I am trying to make a clone of my internal drive using Super Duper! but the 3 TB La Cie external hard drive I want to copy to isn't being recognized by finder or in disk utility. The external hard drive is powered and attached to the desktop via firewire cable. It was properly formatted and made one seemingly successful backup prior to this attempt.
Specs: I have a 27 in iMac with 2 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, purchased in late 2009. Running Mac OS 10.6.8 with 8GB RAM. I have a 2 TB internal HD with only 80 GB available.
Background: I've had few if any problems with this computer but I'm running out of disc space. It's getting a little sluggish and I find that I am force quitting iPhoto more often than I used to. I was getting ready to put a long overdue (less labor intensive) backup plan in place. I had been using DVDs to back up photos and some documents. My computer crashed last week while working in iPhoto. The screen was speckled and banded and I could not restart. I was able to boot in safe mode and run disk utility. The verification stopped (corrupted files found) and disk utility recommended repair. I did a safe mode back up with time machine to the 3 TB ext HD. I tried unsuccessfully to run safe mode with networking to attempt online backup with Crashplan. I read something about installing mac os x on ext HD and then dragging files over to it, but DVD player not functional in safe mode. Then I called Apple support to run what I had done by them and to ask for advice before running disk repair. We tried a PRAM reset but still couldn't restart in normal mode. He said my safe mode backup should be good and to run the repair, restore if necessary and if that doesn't work bring it to Apple for hardware testing. I read somewhere that PRAM resets need to be done with a USB (not wireless) keyboard so I tried again doing a few PRAM/NVRAM resets. No change. Later, maybe even the next day, the screen which had been banded and speckled looked normal again. Not sure why but happy. I restarted successfully. I ran a time machine backup in normal mode to a 5 TB external HD and wanted to make a bootable clone of my mac HD to the 3 TB ext HD (in place of the safe mode backup). The computer crashed again for a little while and I was eventually able to restart. I downloaded Super Duper! but my mac no longer sees the 3 TB external drive. Maybe I did something wrong when I changed drives in time machine for the last backup? I'm guessing I could crash again at any moment and would love to get this clone made.

Yes. Formatted correctly. It' s new ext HD and I made a the first back up on it a few days ago using time machine while my computer was in safe mode. When I was able to restart my computer normally I quickly set up a time machine backup to my larger 5 TB ext drive. Also new and formatted for my mac. I was in a rush to get it going before I left for work so maybe I did something wrong. IDK. I can't remember but it did ask me about switching drives vs setting up. Although I don't see why the computer wouldn't see the drive.
I did try another firewire cable and no change. Checked connections again. The HD turns on and the blue light comes on (it's a La Cie d2 quadra deskdrive)
Is the SMC reset where you detach devices and restart? My printer, keyboard and mouse are all wireless and right now I don't have anything else connected.
I'll try another PRAM reset too.
* Question:
When I connect the 3 TB drive it starts up but I don't see it on my desktop, finder sidebar or in disk utility. If a hard drive starts up but doesn't show up on your computer how do you safely shut it down before disconnecting? I've been clicking on the desktop and then pressing the eject button on my keyboard just in case.

Intel iMac no longer recognizes SuperDrive

I have an Intel iMac and I use a wireless keyboard and mouse. I've tried restarting and holding the mouse button, etc., but the blank disc inside won't eject.
The problem, I think, is that the drive is no longer recognized. iTunes says "Disc burner or software not found". System Profiler doesn't seem to think there is a disc drive either.
I've tried to Repair Permissions, it did nothing.
I tried resetting the SMU and now the fan is super loud. Still nothing works. Please help!!!

Use the instructions below for resetting the Intel iMac's SMC (don't push the button) it's different than earlier Mac's that use the SMU reset.

Car Stereo No Longer Recognizes iPhone after iOS 7.1 Update

I connect my iPhone to my car stereo with via USB (the stereo doesn't have bluetooth) and now after the iOS 7.1 update, it no longers works in my car. My stereo displays an error message of 'iPod err' when I connect it. I've used this same car stereo and USB cable to connect my iPhone for years without any issues, until the 7.1 update a couple days ago.
Anyone else having this issue? This is real frustrating.

His suggestion worked for me: turn off your car, completely shut-off your phone and let it sit a few minutes. Then reboot phone and start car and try again.
