IMac noisy 30 mins after startup

Hi all, I have a 27" Imac, model no A1317. 30 mins after startup, it becomes constantly noisy and is very warm on the left upper back.
Any suggestions would be much appreciasted.

I would recommend doing 2-3 SMC resets back to back. Also if your machine is older than 2-3 years you may have a lot of dust buildup in the air intake. You can remove the RAM cover and vacuum out any dust buildup. DO NOT blow air in, only vacuum out.

  • Please Help: iMac black screens after startup logo + spinning wheel no cursor).

    Hi, guys.
I'm in a fair bit of a desperate situation; my iMac's screen seems to shut down every time after the white startup screen. The Apple logo appears, & the progress wheel begins spinning, then after a while - when it would usually then go to the gray login screen - it would, instead, go black. I can tell that the machine is still on (I can still hear it clicking as it does during processing) but I'm unable to determine anything else. Nothing is visible on the screen - not even the cursor - it's as if the display had turned off completely. I'm not sure if the login screen sits beneath that black screen (I have tried to log on by typing my login details in blindly, but even if it does log in, it's hard to determine what state the computer is in without seeing the screen.
I have tried the PRAM reset (holding CMD+OPT+P+R) during both the white startup screen, & the black screen to no avail. It seems unresponsive because I don't hear any additional chimes that I've been told should be heard during a PRAM reset attempt. I can't even be sure that the command is being inputted correctly because the light on my wireless keyboard remains off during the process.
I've tried rebooting over & over again; the results are the same.
The steps that led to the problem occurred thusly:
1 - I was trying to clear some memory from my current session, so I scanned through my active processes, quitting anything which seemed to be eating up considerable amounts of memory.
2 - One particular process I quit was 'launchd' which was functioning under my profile username.
3 - After quitting launchd, all opened apps seemed to close, & it looked like I was forcibly logged off the machine. The screen froze during this point, & I decided to do a hard reboot to log back in.
4 - The problem began after this hard reboot; startup seemed to occur as per usual; white screen > apple logo > progress wheel > and then suddenly, a black screen where the login screen should be.
I've shown a flashlight into the screen while it's black & it seems well & truly like the display has shut down while the iMac continues in the background. I have had issues relating to my screen going black before, but they were random & intermittent; they didn't occur without fail during the exact same time immediately after startup, & could be remedied by using the CTRL+OPT+EJT keys.
I am on an iMac 2010, 27", using I believe Lion OSX. I am unable to recall additional specifications while the problem persists.
Could anybody please help me? I'm quite desperate; I was in the middle of some urgent work that I need to get back to as soon as possible.
Thank you I'm advance to anyone with advice on how I can go about fixing this.
    ,c.

  • WINDOWS 7 takes 7 to 10 mins after startup to become usable

I purchased a brand new T400 with windows 7 x64 bit.  since I purchased it it takes windows 7 to 10 mins to become usable after entering my password at the windows 7 login screen.  Can someone please advise if this is a problem with faulty hardware or windows 7.  I am afraid that the login will become worse over time.  This laptop is pretty much stacked with 4gb of RAM and 160 GB 7200 RPM HD.   What could be the problem?

Do you have turbomemory?  If you do make sure you have the latest matrix and turbo memory drivers installed.   The other thing I would at is what applications you have starting on boot.  Some antivirus applications will slow down the boot process as well.
Make sure you have the latest video drivers installed as well, since video drives can adversely effect the boot process.   I am running a T500 with Windows 7 64 bit as well as Vista 32bit.   It takes about 40seconds to boot (this is with a hitachi 7200rpm 320gb drive, turbomemory and 4gb ram).  After boot it takes about 20seconds to become usable, this is with most of the lenovo utilities installed, and antivar antivirus and windows defender installed.
I don't see why you wouldn't be capable of a similar startup time.

  • Dial-Up Service, iMac is connecting after StartUp

    Hello,
All of a sudden, my iMac 9.2.2 has started to dial a connection (by it's self)right after Start-Up. Normally, after Start-Up, I click on a Browser (IE,Netscape,iCab)or Outlook Express and the iMac starts dial for a connection.
I have tried dumping the following Prefferances:
    Start-Up Prefferances
    Remote Access Preferrances
And then Restarting, but this problem continues.
    Any ideas or suggestions appreciated

    Hi, Steve -
There are several possibilites of things that can auto dial a connection to the net.
    In Apple software -
    • the Software Update control panel has an automatic check for updates setting
    • the Date & Time control panel - Use a Network Time Server function
    • the QuickTime Settings control panel - Update Check page, at the bottom
In addition, some non-Apple software have automatic check for updates functions. This can include Symantec's Live Update; some graphics apps, MacTracker; etc.
Also, check in the Startup Items folder (in System Folder) for an item, such as an alias to a registration utility, which may be the cause.
And, a remote possibility - check in the Servers folder in System Folder for an alias to a web-based server.

  • ThinkPad X100e Shuts down a few mins after startup.

I received a Lenovo ThinkPad X100e laptop from my friend to keep. He said everything works fine and that there aren't any issues. I actually have a major issue with it. Everything works fine except for the fact that when I try to install Windows 7 or just sit at the BIOS screen, it shuts down with the fan at full blast throughout the whole time. I can even feel that the system is warm from the underside, and I'm not sure what to do. I have tried running it from the AC adapter only, battery only (after charging it for a while) and battery and charger both attached. Everything except for the SSD is original because I used my own drive for safety reasons. It randomly shuts down at different intervals too. What I mean by that is if I leave it without doing anything at just the BIOS, it stays on for about 20 mins (or so) and if I try and install windows, it stays on for about the same time, If not a little shorter. Also, just to clarify, the fan spins freely and everything works fine, so I have no idea what to do. Help!
PS. This is the single core model.

    Hello,
    Perhaps the unit is overheating?
You can download the ThinkPad X100e Hardware Maintenance Manual and use that as a guide to disassemble the unit, thoroughly clean the inside out, including cleaning a re-applying thermal paste to the heat sink, and it should perform much better.

  • Installed ok but now my iMac freezes right after startup

Leopard installed (updated from 10.4) ok, I had to restart once during it but it went ok. Once it was installed it froze once, so I rebooted and it seemed to be fine. I ran the software updates and since then when I start it up it gives me the black tinted screen that says I need to restart so hold down my power button.
I looked in the support section and tried to do the first solution listed under 'blue screen' (I assume that's the same as tinted black overlay screen) which was to boot it as a HD onto my laptop and erase a certain file but I didn't have that file. From this posting:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306857
To make matters worse it seems as though my external HD has broken. I'm scared to try option B in the thread above without backing up my files. Has this happen to anyone else out there? I'm a graphic designer and I'm going crazy without my main workstation. I feel like a race car driver without a car.
Any help, any, would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
The screen that tells you to restart in multiple languages, is that what you're referring to? That suggests a kernel panic, see if anything at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html is helpful.

  • G5 randomly ejecting second internal harddrive 5 mins after startup?

I recently upgraded my G5 from tiger to leapoard to make it compatible with my iphone4. For some reason it has now started ejecting my second internal harddrive containing movies and pictures 5 minuts or so aftr start up. Before that time the drive works perfectly.
The computer is fully updated to 10.5.8.

Do a little at a time and keep your fingers crossed.  You may have to remount and retry several times.  Of course, with it not staying mounted very long, larger files may be problematic.  I would hook up an external drive, copy from the failing drive to the other internal for maximum speed, then copy from the other internal to the external until I got everything off.  Best to get a FireWire external (most useful, but USB is OK) SATA enclosure or drive dock, put a bare drive into it so that when you are done, you can drop the bare drive into the machine in place of the failing drive.
Oh, and one other thing I might try at some point is to shut down, remove and replace the SATA connectors to the failing drive to clean them up and then reboot.  I would not, however, do this until I had gotten the most important files off the failing drive.
Then, once you have done that, you might want to get another couple of bare drives and use something like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner (sorry, no handy link in my bad-o-tricks) to clone and keep current backups of the internal drives.  A SATA dock (toaster) might be just the thing, rather than a plain enclosure, certainly faster to deal with when you are swapping multiple drives around.  The linked example is a Quad interface that has actually come down in price the past couple of months.

  • Noisy display on Startup (iMac Intel 20")

    Hello to all,

    Ciao, Italia!
I experienced the same problem as you for the very first time tonight. I've had my computer for nearly a month now and I'm wondering if something's gone wrong. I came here looking for an explanation.
Everything on my machine appears to be functioning normally. Did you ever solve the problem on your machine?
I'm using an iMac iSight and I just ran some new system updates tonight.

  • IMac freeze after startup, works fine in safe mode

Hello, my Mid 2010 iMac is freezing  about 3 minutes after startup. Ive tried booting from the instal disk and repairing it but it didnt work. In safe mode it works completely fine. It similar to some other peoples problem but i was hoping someone could help me, my applecare literally just ran out like 3 weeks ago.

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.

  • My iMac freezes up shortly after startup.

My iMac freezes up shortly after startup. I can't move the mouse or use the keyboard. I have to manually shut down several times before it would work.

    Hi patrickbryant,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac is becoming unresponsive when you start up, I recommend trying to boot into Safe Mode as well as using Disk Utility to verify your hard disk. You can find these steps outlined at this link:

  • IMac 24" OS X 10.5.8 crashes after startup

After startup, my iMac crashes after a short while (from 10 seconds up to 10 minutes). The screen freezes and the keyboard doesn't respond. I can't click, however, i can move the cursor around. This iMac was bought 2008 and I've never had any problems like this before, and I have no idea what made it behave this way. (I noticed it had crashed when I tried to wake it up from sleep mode a couple of days ago.)
Things I tried that didn't fix the problem:
    1. Shutting down and disconnecting power cord for 30 seconds
    2. Reseting PRAM
    3. Created a new login-account
    4. Repaired disc permissions in Disc Utilities
    5. Hardware test (holding "d" during startup)
(OBS. I've tried the extended hardware test several times but sooner or later it crashes, always before the test is finished!)
In Safe Mode (holding "shift" during startup) though, it doesn't crash, but then I can't have sound etc.
What kind of problem could this be? What should I do?

You mentioned running Apple Hardware Test however I'm guessing you may not have run in Extended Mode. If you did not then you really haven't tested it. When you start AHT look for Extended Mode and follow the instructions. This test will take significantly longer to do. My guess is  you have  temp sensor or HD problem.
Another thing you can do is run Activity Monitor when operating normally and look to see if you have any processes that are using a lot of %CPU, if you do that's a sign you have a problem process. You can also look for how much FREE RAM you have (it's under the System Memory tab) however being low on RAM would not cause a crash it would cause a slowdown.

    Hello,
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • 27: iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter quits working post-firmware

I iMac Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter suddenly quit working after I installed Apple's latest iMac display firmware update. This is an Intel Core i5; the monitor is an LG Flatron 24" Wide, and when it powers up it says "no video input" and goes into power-saving mode. No amount of replugging cables helps, but the monitor works fine on other computers.
The Displays control panel just shows one monitor, and clicking Detect Displays does nothing.
I suspect Apple's Display Firmware Update. My installer log shows the following, but the problem only happened today after the latest update:
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.0
    6/1/10 9:45 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0
    6/4/10 11:47 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
    6/5/10 7:29 AM 27-inch iMac Display Update 1.0
I have automatic updates disabled, but after each update I would see more firmware updates ready, but caution leads me to never install more than one of these at a time, and then to wait a while to see if anything bad happens. The odd thing is that the Display Update 1.0 seems to have been installed three times in this course of events. Alas, there appears to be no way to uninstall a firmware update.
Here is the System Profiler Graphics/Displays output:
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 512 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x944a
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-B9110C-425
    EFI Driver Version: 01.00.383
    Displays:
    iMac:
    Resolution: 2560 x 1440
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Built-In: Yes
    Connection Type: DisplayPort
    Display Connector:
    Status: No Display Connected
It says the Mac sees no display connected, and the display gets no video signal. Since the adapter is an active device (it has powered electronics to convert DisplayPort signals to DVI signals) I suppose it could have just coincidentally died. But that seems unlikely given that the thing worked perfectly just before the last firmware update.
Does anybody have similar experience, or better yet, a fix?

Unfortunately the Apple Knowledge Base does not give much information about this update. Such has how to tell if it has been successfully installed. I suspect that because it keeps recurring in the install log that it has not been installed successfully as yet. Are you receiving this update through Software Update? Can you locate the installer for this update? It maybe located in Apps/Utilities.
Some firmware update installations can be interrupted/corrupted by attached devices. If you find the update's installer on your iMac, I suggest that you detach all external devices from the iMac, use an Apple USB keyboard & mouse if available, follow the instructions carefully and install the update manually. If you do not locate the installer I suggest downloading manually from the link below and installing it.
The Knowledge Base article mentions that your iMac should also have a Graphics Firmware Update. I suggest that you download and install that as well.
