IMac not booting/finding HDD? White screen on Boot

Hi
Upgraded to Yosemite on launch day and the iMac has been fine up until last Monday.
We had a power cut and the iMac was on at the time. Since then, any time I try to switch it on I get a white screen.
I've created a Yosemite boot drive on my memory stick and it finds it. Gone into Disk Utility and it says the drive is damaged and backup any data is can.
Are the power cut and HDD failure connected or could it be something to do with Yosemite?
Its asking me to backup the data on the HDD but is this possible if I cant boot into it?
Thanks

I reopened the imac, removed the optical drive (hdd was already out). Restarted with my USB external HDD connected, nothing happened, white screen still. I then reconnected the friend's USB HDD also and restarted and got the screen to choose a startup disk.
Computer then boots fine from my external hdd. Turn it off, reinstall my HDD and optical drive.
Turn it on again and am greeting with the same blank white screen again.
I then remove the optical drive again and am able to boot from the internal drive. BUT when I go to system preferences to change startup disk, if I check the internal drive or the external USB drive and click reset I got the error "building boot caches on boot helper partition failed". I have no idea what is going on. I repair permissions several times.
I then restart the computer several times and it seems to restart consistently from the internal drive. I then put the optical drive back in and it now appears to be working.
The original external drive I booted from was a 10.5 macbook pro cloned drive. So I don't know if that somehow corrupted my 10.8 imac drive or some firmware that made it such that it wouldn't boot.
What a hassle.
And for anyone who cares and has read this far, I am living in a remote town in Mongolia at the time and didn't have any suction cups to remove the front glass from the imac. I do have an iSesamo tool to open up ipod touches and such, and was able to use that to get the front glass off.
If anyone has an idea of what happened I'd be interested in hearing.

  • IMac will not get past chime & white screen

iMac will not get past chime & white screen. I have tried all the start up key combinations I can think of (d or c etc) with a start up disc, but no joy. The disc drives seems ok - you can hear it working & it will eject OK.
Any other start up ideas, please?

Have you tried a safe boot? If not, hears how (it's straight from Mac Help):
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
Be sure the computer is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

  • Won't boot stuck on white screen

I got an apple question for u before I schedule an appointment at the genius bar...my mid 2007 24"  2.8GHz intel core 2 duo 4 GB 1067 DDR3 iMac running 10.7.2 will not boot passed the white screen. It just keeps on spinning. I had to do a full erase and install and restored from Time Capsule backup. I can boot while holding the option key and it will allow me to boot to the Recovery HD which I ran disk utility and repaired permissions and verified disk, everything came back repaired and "Ok", I reset pram...All that is good but when I try to restart to the Macintosh HD it just spins on the white screen...any suggestions before I bring it in?
    thanx

If you can get it to boot once the first thing you should do is backup all your data using Time Machine or better yet create a Bootable Clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. What Apple says to do to trouble shoot is in Gray screen appears during startup.
I would also recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, if no errors appear the first time run the test 2-3 more times. Each Extended Mode test will take 30-60 minutes.

My iMac turns on. A white screen appears, then a apple appears, then the wheel starts to turn but my computer never boots all the way on?

Please carefully read Apple's Gray screen appears during startup advice letter for steps on how to troubleshoot the issue.

On boot up, just white screen with logo and windmill.  Forever! Can't get out.

Backup in case your disk is failing.  (Post back if you need instructions on how to do that w/o booting OS X.)
Start up in Safe Mode;  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
If it boots reliably in Safe Mode then it is probably a software issue.  Post back for more instructions.
    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?  If not the disk is failing and will need to be replaced.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with the green OK message then use Disk Utility to erase the drive and then reinstall OS X.  (Be sure you have a backup before erasing the disk.  Post back if you need instructions on how to do that.)
If it repaired all errors and is still not booting normally, reinstall OS X.
If it is still sick after all these steps then the disk probably needs to be replaced or it could be a disk cable.  You replace these inexpensively and fairly easily yourself or take it to an Apple store for them to do it for you at a higher cost.  If it is still under warranty or AppleCare have Apple do it for you for free.  You may want to have Apple check the health of the system and disk before repairing it yourself.  Post back if you need instructions on replacing the disk and/or testing the disk cable.

Try what you have not tried so far. You may have tried all and the Apple store maybe in order.
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • White screen after boot, only status bar visible

A few days ago, I had a message on my HP Veer 4G that a restart was required. I'm assuming something had been updated. After the reboot, my phone booted to a white screen with only the status bar at the top being visible. I've tried the triple toggle and the Funtion+Sym+R methods of restarting the phone, but the same thing happens every time the phone reboots. At first the SIM had a PIN set, so the status bar just said SOS only - SIM Lock. I removed the PIN with another phone, then the status bar showed the phone had registered with the AT&T network, but still the rest of the screen was white, so I couldn't do anything with it.
With the white screen, the gesture area would still respond to swipes back and forth across it, and the white screen would show response to wherever I would touch on the screen.
I don't know what I did, but by pressing a bunch of keys as the phone was rebooting, I got the option to reboot or erase entire phone contents. I chose to erase the phone and finally got to set up the phone from scratch. Can anyone explain what just happened?
Post relates to: HP Veer p160una (AT&T)

    Hello!
This usually means some software on the phone went catastrophicly wrong thus the need of partial erase.  Could you send me a private message of your palm profile email address?  Have you installed anything to the phone outside our app catalog?  Keep me posted.

  • Imac 21.5 white screen on boot up

I have the A1311 2009 21.5" iMac. The computer was running fine. I changed startup disks to boot off of a friend's external USB backup to get some files off for them (I needed to export their address book and get other various files)
When I finished getting what I needed under system preferences I changed the boot up drive back to my imac's internal drive and clicked restart.
The computer restarted gave the startup chime and stayed at a blank white screen. No spinning sprocket.
I am using a usb keyboard and usb mouse.
The only boot keyboard command that works is command+option+p+r and when I do that I get the chime and a reboot.
I've tried resetting the SMC by unpluggin it.
I've tried inserting a disk warrior cd to boot off of it, but it doesn't boot. And holding the mouse button on startup does not eject the CD.
I've tried holding c when booting to boot of the CD drive.
I've tried holding option when starting. I've connected my own bootable USB backup and held "option" when starting.
I've tried holding shift when starting. I've tried command+r when starting.
Nothing happens. I always get the chime and then a white screen.
Looking online, it looked like several macbook air/pro owners with a similiar problem disconnected their HDD and then were able to boot off an external source. So I took off the glass and LCD and disconnected the 3 hdd connectors, put the screen on and tried booting again using all the steps above and every time always the same, a chime and then white screen.
I took all the ram out and when it was turned on got a low intermitent beep and black screen. Put the ram back in and get the startup chime and white screen.
I'm at a loss as to what else to try. I can't see how booting off my friend's external usb hdd would lead to this.
    Any suggestions.

  • IMac wont boot up, only white screen, advice needed.

    Hi,
my 2008 iMac 24" got the spinning beach ball, it was spinning for 5 minutes or more, so I held down the power button and did a force quit, now when I turn on the machine I hear the chime , but I only get a blank white screen, Ive tried starting up with the Shift key pressed, also tried starting up with Command + V pressed and Option + Command + P + R keys pressed, but still the white screen, can somebody suggest something I can do to resolve this....thanks

Can you start the Mac from the Install DVD? If you can, go to Disk Utility in the Utilities Menu and check if the HDD shows in the left column. If it is not there it is damaged in some fashion. If the iMac is under warranty call Apple Care and arrange for warranty repair or replacement (Apple's choice.)
