IMac will not boot from Snow Leopard DVD or original Leopard disc!

I am going mad! I am trying to update my iMac (with original Leopard installed) to Snow Leopard. Here is what I have tried:
Using the Snow Leopard DVD:
- A standard install: the disc ejects after about 15 minutes.
- Put another working DVD in and verified it in Disk Utility, all ok.
- Verified the internal hard drive in Disk Utility, all ok.
- Verfied the SL DVD, all ok.
- Decided to try a clean install, so backed up everything.
- Tried to boot from SL DVD by using the Utilities option, it ejects the disc at restart.
- Tried to force it to boot to the DVD by restarting and holding the C key, it ejects.
- Restart holding the Option key, it ejects.
- Restart holding the Ctrl, Alt and Option keys, ejects.
- Everytime it ejects and starts up normally.
- So I cleaned the disc, updated all the firmware, reset the NVRAM/PRAM via holding keys when restarting, and repaired disc permissions.
- Tried to force it to boot again, ejects.
- Tried to put the disc back in straight after it ejects with all the steps, still starts up normally.
- Changed the start up disc in System Preferences to the SL DVD, restart, it ejects.
By now I am readying the noose...
- Dug out the original Leopard installation CDs.
- Repeated all the forced boot restarts (C key, Option key, Ctrl, Alt, Option keys), same story.
- Repeated changing the start up disc in System Prefs, same story again.
- Call Apple Support, they told me to try everything I have tried and that the DVD drive is dodgy, well it works with everyhting else! Burning and reading! I really don't want to have to go to an Apple Store- it's miles away (a costly journey) and I just do not have the time for all of this.
RAWR! Does anyone know what to do? Please? S.O.S.?

Possible scenarios:
1: The 10.6.3 SL retail disk is bad, it happens.
2: Your not using the 10.6.3 SL retail disk but one from another machine which doesn't have the drivers for that machine.
3: Your optical drive is funky or some other hardware issues.
4: Your trying to install 10.6 onto a PowerPC based Mac, no can do.
5: Your not using a wired keyboard for boot key commands, have some other hardware conflicts.
Possible solutions.
1: Copy the SL 10.6.3 disk using Disk Utility to another DVD, the error checking may resolve the original disk's issue.

3: Call Apple for a new 10.6.3 disk (and make copies for backup before Apple discontinues selling it)
If your upgrading to 10.6 to get to 10.6.8 to upgrade to 10.7, be warned of this:
1: Your 10.5 software will not work in 10.7, no more Rosetta or PPC based code.
2: Your hardware will not qualify if it's a 32 bit Intel Core Duo, also you may experience slowdowns in performance over 10.6 (10.6 is the fastest OS X version for Intel Macs) in older Intel hardware (I suggest Early 2011 Mac's and later only for Lion)
3: Mountain Lion 10.8 is reportingly coming out this summer and will not run on a lot of older Intel based Mac's because of heftier graphics requirements.
4: 10.6 has the widest range of current avaialble software and drivers for third party hardware.
My advice, stick with 10.6.8 and stay there, buy a new Mountain Lion machine after this summer. Skip Lion completely.

IMac not booting from Leopard Disk

I have been given the task of helping out a friend who has recently inherited a 20" Aluminium iMac from some late family members. The machine has a password to get in which he doesn't know but other than that it boots as far as the login screen fine. I tried to get it to boot from my Leopard disk and it just reboots instead of launching OS X from the DVD. I've run a hardware check and everything is reported as running fine (although I did leave it doing a full one last night, so i'll post any updates if there are any). Does anyone know what might be the problem?
I've tried holding down alt and selecting the DVD, reboots as before.
I've tried holding down C, which it just reboots to after spinning up the DVD
I've tried holding down cmd,alt,shift,del but it seems to just ignore this key combination
I'm using an old white keyboard and a USB mouse as the ones that came with it are wireless.

It's quite possible that your retail Leopard DVD predates the release of the iMac and so lacks the necessary drivers for the newer hardware. Ask your friend if he got the disks that came with the iMac and if so use that disk set. If he didn't get them, identify the exact iMac model:

and see what version of Leopard came with the iMac. If your retail disk is earlier than the version that came with the iMac, it won't work. You'll need a later version of the retail disk (if available) or your friend will need to contact Apple tech support and see if he can order a replacement disk set for the iMac.

Can only boot into Windows 7. Can't even boot from Snow Leopard DVD.

I have no idea what prompted this. I don't recall installing any OS updates recently, other than some Windows Live apps in Windows 7.
I have an early 2009 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard, and have Windows 7 64-bit installed in a Boot Camp partition. When I installed Windows 7, I couldn't get the Boot Camp utility to install within Windows (I guess because it's 64-bit) so to switch back and forth between OSes, I just shut down the Mac and restart it with the Option key pressed, and select Mac OS X when I want to return to Mac. This has worked for about a month and a half now (ever since I got Windows 7). Suddenly I have problems.
I first had problems booting into Windows or Mac. I got to the grey screen with the Apple logo, with that spinning "progress" thing going for a while, then it would freeze up and get stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo. I zapped the PRAM. No help. Then, after disconnecting all external drives (I have several) and extra USB devices, I was able to boot from the DVD install disk and reinstall Snow Leopard on my internal drive. Joy, or so I thought. Then I booted into Windows 7, and after some weirdness getting it to start, it did successfully start and ran just peachy.
Then I turned off the Mac and held down the option key (as usual) to return to Mac OS. But now all that happens is that I get a grey screen for a few seconds, then the Mac boots back into Windows 7, which seems to work fine. (I'm in Windows 7 right now.) I turned on one my external drives (Snow Leopard installed, connected via Firewire 800) in hopes that the Mac would boot into that, but same thing. Ignored and back to Windows 7.
Then I thought I'd boot from the install DVD again by putting it in the drive and holding down the C key as I restart, but the same thing--a grey screen for a few seconds, and then booting right into Windows 7. I can't seem to escape Windows 7! It's a bit disturbing when it won't even recognize the install DVD.
I tried to call Apple Care since I'm within my 90 day support window, but of course they are closed. I'm figuring that I'm going to have to take this into an Apple Store, but thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

According to Apple, Win 7 64bit is supported with Bootcamp 3.0. If bootcamp 3.0 is available; I could not find it anywhere on Apple's website. It appears the most recent version is 2.2. The only place I could find 3.0 is not on Apples website and it's a questionable source so I won't post it here.
It may just be a matter of time before Apple makes it available. I'm not suggesting you wait, however if the install disk can't be used, I'm not too sure where u could go from there. Calling Applecare might work.
If you do a simple google search using the terms 'download bootcamp drivers windows 7' u will see what I was referring too.

IMac not booting from HD, cannot repair disc in Disk Utility

First the problem:
I've had the imac G5 for nearly two years and its been running without a problem, now it suddenly wouldn't start up. Firstly I get two or three grey screens in succession looking as if being drawn from top to bottom very quickly, then the apple logo and timer, after a minute or so the fans start up to full power and it stays that way.
What I've tried:
Reading around discussions I tried rebooting from DVD installer and using disk utility. Result: error message: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
Because I want to sell the imac I had backed up all of my important data so I zero-wrote the hard drive in preferrence to buying a third party repair package. Reinstalled from DVD. Shut down and restarted. Everything worked except those banding grey screens appeared that were never there before. Something looks wrong. Then when i tried to reinstall microsoft office (as a test) the OS seemed to freeze and I had to shut it down again. Now it won't boot up as before. This looks like a very serious problem.
I hesitate to buy tech tool pro in case that doesn't solve it either.
Can't think if I did something to cause this. All I've been doing is transferring some data via ethernet to a newer mac. There was also a Lacie firewire drive linked to both computers as i was backing up stuff. One night I shut the iMac down and the next day it started with this problem.

By the way, the memory in the mac was purchsed from a third party and installed ages ago by myself. Never been a problem with it and have been running Final Cut Studio no trouble.

Long story short, I had the same problem last week, just after installing the latest software updates. I went through all the resets and disk utility verification (multiple times with phone support -- Apple Care), then took it to the local Apple store b/c nothing worked. They couldn't figure it out either and recommended that I try to backup my data on my bootable external drive before they started messing with my hard drive, since Apple stopped providing this service. I brought it home, could not boot from my external drive, so booted from the disk again, just for kicks I ran the same verification process (this was the 3rd or 4th time). This time something happened but it still failed. So I ran it three more times (each time something new happened and then it failed, until the third time when everything worked. The only problem now is that I seem to have lost all sound???? I did immediately make a duplicate of the Imac hard drive. Any thoughts on how to get my sound back? hope this helps....

T500 will not boot from bootable CDs/DVDs, but will read and open files on them

System: 2 T500s, both manufactured early April 2009, win XP, ATI Radeon 3650 graphics,4GB RAM, latest Lenovo drivers installed..
Problem:- Our 2 T500s cannot boot from any windows coded recovery CD -except Lenovo's rescue/recovery discs. Some -but not all- Linux code recovery CDs do boot the T500. Every other kind of CD and DVD such as audio and video works fine in windows XP.
Here an example of our 2 T500s' failure to recognise bootable CD/DVD discs. All the files and folders on a Paragon Partition Mgr v8.5 Recovery CD can be viewed in windows explorer and files such as jpg, txt and zip can be opened. This CD will not boot the T500, however, it will boot our other -non-Lenovo- computers. The same applies when the media are DVDs with identical content.
We have tried several different kinds of CD and DVD media to no avail. Burning the media on other computers and using several kinds of burning software does not help, ourT500s refuse to boot from them too.
The problem seems clear enough, on starup our T500s fail to distinguish between windows coded bootable and ordinary CDs/DVDs -unless they are Lenovo recovery/restore discs.
A solution would be gratefully received.

A. Yes, many times from a USB CD/DVD drive, it failed too. We burned on that drive too, but the T500s will not boot from those CDs either.

A. We have used the Paragon internal ISO creator/burner, the Roxio burner that was preinstalled wth the T500, BartPE internal ISO/burner ,InfraRecorder and others too. Made ISOs and burned from them, burned CDs directly on the fly etc, all to no avail..
For some reason, our two T500s' CD/DVD drive controllers or some intermediate software act as if the CD's boot sector is not present. Clearly, something (BIOS, software, unstable hardware, or ? ) is blocking the read or write of the data necessary to boot these CDs. Whatever that 'something' is, it has no effect on burning and booting Lenovo recovery CDs.
The bizarre part of all this is that a`Lenovo recovery CD burned on the T500 drive WILL BOOT the T500. A Paragon v8.5 recovery CD or BartPE CD burned in one of our non-Lenovo computers will boot ithat and every other computer we have except our T500s.

Imac Not Booting From CD

I've tried just about everything at this stage, so I'm here asking for help. I have an Imac, of which I can log into the root account and has no openfirmware password. The Macos ISO is seen from within Macosx, though I cannot get it to boot from cd, whether holding down the "c" key or setting that device to boot up first from the startup disk menu. I have tried resetting the pram and nvram and reset-all within openfirmware, and the "boot-device" command within openfirmware shows exactly the same as another machine which does boot from cd. I know that both the drive and (multiple) CD's I've tried are functional.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as I am at a loss at the moment and have no further idea's of my own.

Is the Optical drive known good? can you read other disks?
If not do you have another Mac you could use Target Disk Mode on and hence use that Mac's optical drive rather than the iMac's internal...
Does Apple Hardware Test CD report any faults or will it not boot from that either?

Satellite P840/016 does not boot from CD or DVD

Using F2 enabled the BIOS to boot from optical drive, saved and re-started. Finds the bootable CD created from the same laptop using the repair disc from Windows 7 recovery but does not boot.
Tried Ubuntu DVD which works as boot disk on all other laptops - still does not boot.
Changed the setting in BIOS to non-secure - same problem.

Thanks - tried this pressing F12. Message appears on the screen to press any key to boot from DVD. Key pressed, the DVD is read and then delay with blank screen. The laptop goes back to start screen and than goes to boot from the HDD. Also tried making USB as bootable. Pressed F12 and selected USB as boot device. Reads the USB and after a period of time boots from HDD.
Checked DVD driver - it is the latest.
Operating system is Windows 8 pro.
RAM is 8GB, processor is I7 and HDD is 1 TB. Laptop is only 3 weeks old

Absolutely will not boot from cd or dvd

Someone has given me a Sun Ultra 10 workstation ... problem is that no matter what I do this machine will not boot from the optical drive. Extremely fustrating. The errors I am getting are "Bad magic number in disk label" and "Can't open disk label package" and "can't open boot device".
I have tried three seperate drives, three seperate IDE ribbons, and three different disks. I have tried on both IDE channels, master and slave. The cdrom alias seems to be hard set and does not change when I change its position on the bus. A combination of devalias, probe-ide and show-disks helps. What happens when I try and boot from the correct device is that the disk spins up, I get the error(s) and thats it.
I am aware that there has been a lot of discussion about this in the past and have spent absolutely ages reading pages from google results but none of it seems to help me.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me? It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :-)

Just checking that you are trying to boot from a Sparc version.
I checked what happend with boot cdrom -s on a Sun Ultra 10 from a X86 Solaris DVD and got the errors:
Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package
Can't open boot device

Cant boot from snow leopard dvd and install crashes computer

Folks, hi, newbie to this forum but at wits end.
I have a MacBook Pro 17inch mid 2010 model. I added the OMG disk doubler and ditched the internal dvd, so I now have 2 X 500GB hard drives, one of which has the OSX. This disk in trouble and Disk Utility says that it needs repairing, but i need to repair after booting from an different disk.
So, I added a usb dvd drive and put in snow leopard. It would not boot via holding down 'c' and the option key only saw the current drive. No problems I thought, I will install onto the second hard drive and boot from that. The process got a fair way though (20 mins) and the computer crashed. I checked that it is GUID, tried again, and ditto. So, I made a new partition that was nice and clean -- and ditto. Stuck about now, I tried to format a usb hard drive -- ditto. Hmm, didnt want to, but out came the second drive and in went the old dvd drive -- same issue -- could not boot using c button and the option key did not recognise the snow leopard install. Out came the drive and I went to the apple store -- they told me that the Snow Leopard I had brought was an upgrade and that I needed a Box Set. $169 later and - you guessed it -- the dvd is the same, no start on c, not recognised on option, and the computer crashes if I try and install to the second hard drive or an external drive.
Help anyone??

when i go to system prefs- startup, the dvd does not show up in the list of startup drives. The apple salesman said that the OSX install disk I purchased was not a start up disk / full install but rather an upgrade only disk. That is why he said to use the box set as a 'full install' - but both appear to not start up or be able to do a clean install. I just end up with a set of files call Mac OSX install files.

G5 will not boot from HD or DVD

I am attempting to startup a Mac G5 (Dual 1.8), but can only get a far as the gray screen with a flashing ?/Finder Icon. Machine will power up and fans will spin at max. Have tried to boot in various modes (safe mode, single user mode) with no success. Have tried to boot from G5 software install dvd (10.3) with no success. Any advice would be appreciated ;-)

PIoneer DVR-112D will not boot to retail Tiger DVD

I recently replaced the original Sony CRX155E CD-R/RW drive with a new Pioneer DVR-112D DVD +/- RW drive so that I could install Tiger and purchase an iPhone. I installed the drive, downloaded and ran Patchburn, and have used the drive for several days.
The drive plays and burns DVDs within OS 10.3.9 perfectly. It also recognizes the Tiger disc and all files within the Finder. However, when I attempt to install / upgrade Tiger, the Mac freezes upon startup. The Grey Apple screen appears with the Logo and spinning wheel at roughly 3x normal size and stays. I have let it sit in that state for up to 12 hours. There is no change.
To get back into OS X, I have to put my Panther disc in and boot into the installer. I then must change the boot drive back to my hard drive and reboot.
I have sifted pioneer's support site for a Mac driver and ran two superdrive firmware upgrades I found on Apple to no avail. Can anyone help?

You really don't need any additional drivers or firmware updates for the 112D or for the QS G4 to enable the installation of Tiger. The 112D burner should work (and apparently does) with a simple swap with your old optical drive, followed by a PMU reset for good measure. The only significant thing you may be missing in your Panther OS is the DVD Player application, if your old optical drive was not DVD capable back when you installed Panther. However, this shouldn't affect your ability to do a Tiger install.
Boot to Safe Mode, which will run FSCK (file system check) for you, then use Disk Utility to run Repair Permissions, then shut down.
Check the Tiger disc to insure it's clean and unscratched.
You might boot Panther from your startup drive, load the Tiger disc, and copy it to your hard drive if you have the space available. If it copies over properly, the disc and the drive are likely okay. You can then trash/empty trash the copied data.
Take Japamac's advice, disconnect your peripherals and do a PMU reset to clear your startup memory, setting it back to its defaults. Insure that you indeed are using a Retail version of the Tiger install DVD, which is a black disc with a large "X" on it. Using an upgrade version or a gray OEM version of the Tiger disc will likely present problems on your Mac, during or after an install.

Mid 2007 Macbook Pro will not boot from windows 7 DVD

I'm trying to install Windows 7 64 bit on to my mid 2007 MBP. The DVD is valid, boots on a PC and I was able to load WIndows 7 into a VMWare fusion virtual machine on the very same system. I am convinced from those actions I have a good DVD and a good DVD drive.
What happens is the screen goes black and "1. 2. and Choose type of DVD boot:" appear. ( I may have the phrase slightly wrong) No matter what I type nothing happens. I've gone into the boot selecter and same thing happens if I select the DVD.

so you did not burn the DVD from ISO? that is what this usually is.
the error and yours being 2007 says you are trying 64-bit and your Mac does not support 64-bit versions it has 32-bit ROM (and likely cannot upgrade past Lion when 10.8 Mountain Lion comes out).

If you have a 13" MBP, then it is still under warranty. Either go to an Apple Store or AASP, or contact them by phone to set up an appointment.

Can not Boot from Windows 7 DVD

I am trying to install Windows 7 with Boot Camp. As soon as the Windows 7 Installation should start, I only see a blank blank screen. The SuperDrive is working, but nothing appears on the screen.

I already have bootable USB (windows) plus Windows support drivers and both were created by Boot Camp Assistance. The first time I loaded windows on BCA, it is installed with no problems at all. I had to remove windows and recover Mac which install Lion10.7.4 and since then I started to face the dead-end black screen .
