IMac not booting up - getting stuck on blue screen

Hello, first post here.
I have an iMac which I powered down last night and came this morning to boot it back up. Unfortunately it was having troubles booting up. It got stuck on the blue screen, kinda switching back and forth between two shades of blue and occasionally displaying the mouse and spinning load icon.
I tried restarting it, and curiously there was no startup sound. I tried unplugging the power cable and plugging it back in holding the power button and turned it on with the fan going full blast. I rebooted again, the fan was silent, but the startup sound finally chimed. I then proceeded to try the following:
•Reset the PRAM - no luck
•Tried booting in safe mode - stuck on gray screen with apple icon
•Tried booting into target mode - drive was recognized on my macbook fine
•Tried using disk utility on my macbook with the imac in target mode - repaired the disk, but still wouldn't boot
•Tried restarting it in single-user mode, worked, repaired the disk through that, rebooted and still no luck
•Couldn't boot into CD mode, I believe my DVD drive is broken
Whats interesting is that the hard drive isn't making the usual mechanism sound that I usually hear when its powering up (assuming that's what makes the sound)
So any help is much appreciated. I use this computer in my recording studio and have lots of data I wish not to loose, so any solutions needing a reinstallion/erasing the drive is fine, just keep in mind I need to do a good backup first.
Thanks

  • My imac will not boot- it gets stuck on blue screen and will not go any further

Since the last update to Snow Leopard- My computer seems to perform fine, but when I restart the computer or shut it down and then turn it back on- it gets hung. SOmetimes I get the You need to restart screen. But, most times, it goes to the blue screen. The mouse shows up and the dissappears. It shows back up and the dissappears again. Then the system working spiral comes on and off every few seconds. But- it never gets to the sign in screen. ANyone know how to fix? What am I doing wrong?

Does your iMac fail to boot every time or only some of the time?  Here are some things to try:
    - Boot into "safe mode", which will run the equivalent of Disk Utility's "repair disk" operation.
    - Boot from the system install disc that came with that Mac with the "D" key held down to run the diagnostics.  Run them several times to see if any hardware problems are reported.
    - If you can't identify the problem or fix it any other way, download and install the OS X 10.6.7 "combo" updater.
    - If that still doesn't help, try reinstalling OS X 10.6 over the top of what's on the disk.

  • My touchsmart will not boot allI get is a blue screen with f key to do different things

My Touch smart desk top will not boot when I turn it on all I get is a blue screen with HP in the center and f key functions

    Hello charleshobby:
Your computers start up has been corrupted. No big deal. Turn on your computer hold down on F-8 key as you turn it on. This should put you in safe mode. If f-8 key fails then just disconnect the power cord at the power adapter and plug it back in and turn on your computer (This is called a fource start up) automatically puts your computer into safe mode. Use your arrow kek select safe mode with net work. Top one I belive. In safe mode close out Help and Support window displayed. Open up Recovery Manger and select Microsoft System Restore. Click next then click next again now a list of dates will appair choose a date before this event occured. Click next and let your computer complete the sytem restore. My guess Microsft up dates caused this issue. After this is finished now go back and change all your update setting to down load up dates but let me choose witch ones to install. Only install three at a time. To a void future occurances and black screen or blue screen issues. Follow these steps for blue screen or black screen. Please click on Kudos if this has resolved your issue. Thank you frrw.

  • Os 10.4 not booting... stuck at blue screen

As the topic suggests, my iMac G5 isn't booting properly, and is getting stuck after the grey apple screen,at a blue screen, with the mouse visible. It will start up in safe mode, but not in normal mode.
I've tried clearing the PRAM, resetting the SMU, I've succesfully completed a disc repair with no issues, and I've also done an erase/reinstall of the 10.4 OS.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

Welcome to Discussions - You may have a problem with corrupted preferences, try using Preferential Treatment and also, remove all log-in items from your start-up account.

  • My Mac pro will not boot. it gets stuck on the grey screen.

My Mac pro will not boot. it gets stuck on the grey screen. What can I do?

Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
If using 10.7 or later, the Installer/Utilities DVD has been replaced with a special emergency partition on the Hard drive called "Recovery_HD"

  • Downloading software update 10.6.8 causes computer to get stuck at blue screen

All of a sudden my Macbook Pro would not load past the white apple loading screen; so I ran disk utility, verified and repaired my HD, and still nothing. I then re downloaded the OS X 10.6.3 on my laptop, and got it to boot up and sign me in; when I signed in, the computer was behaving VERY slowly, and none of my applications would open.
So I browsed the suggestions on the support pages, and tried ALL of them to no avail.
I did an erase and re-install of my hard drive; I completely wiped it, then just re installed the original OS from the disk it came with, 10.6.3. I then downloaded the software updates, and upon restarting my computer, it was stuck on the blue screen. Apparently this is a startup disk problem I've heard?
After two more times of wiping the HD and reinstalling the operating system again (several times of which the installation failed), I'm now running on 10.6.3, and terrified to update my software for fear of having it get my computer stuck AGAIN.
Is there something wrong with my startup disk? My hard drive? the software update?

Probably the logic board, maybe a drive problem, but you did a verify (did it  come up with errors in red font?)and disk repair using the disk utility on the install disk and ran it till it came up with this drive appears ok in green font?
Did you run a permissions repair as well?
You can bring it to an Apple store genius bar (make an appointment) and they will diagnose it for free.

  • G4 iBook works in Safe Mode, but not in regular mode (stuck on blue screen)

    14" iBook G4 1.2GHz with 1 gig of RAM.
I recently had an issue with this machine in that the image on the screen would freeze but the cursor would be able to move around. This was narrowed down to an issue with the logic board. I wanted something a little more permanent than a shim, so I sent the board in to have it reballed.
After installing the maching back into my iBook, it seemed to work fine until I applied a software update to the machine.
It was then that I got to experience the first of many kernel panics.
Restarting at different times always brought me to the dialog box which states that the machine needed to be restarted in multiple languages.
Running the Apple Hardware Test off my install disks yielded this error code: 2ATI/2/4:113-xxxxx-125
I have no idea what that means. I do know that just before I got the results of the test, the screen changed to all kinds of colors. It was only for a few seconds and then the results (with the error code) were displayed.
Still, not sure what to do next, I tried resetting the PRAM. I also tried resetting the NVRAM.
I also tried booting up into Safe Mode which actually worked. There were no issues with the machine and everything seemed to be working fine.
When I tried to restart the machine in regular mode, I'm taken to the infamous blue screen and the machine just stays there. When I let the machine stay off overnight, it booted up normal, but after applying the software update, the machine was in kernel panic again.
I've tried running fsck, but nothing changes.
I'm still not sure why it seems to work in Safe Mode but not in regular mode.
I'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas.

    Hi,
A couple of the things that are disabled in safe mode are AirPort and non Apple startup items. The easiest thing for you to test is the AirPort card. Shut down and remove the AE card under the keyboard. See if it starts. If it does your AE card is bad. If not, start in safe mode and go to System Preferences>Accounts>youraccount and disable all non Apple startup (LOgin) items by clicking on them and then the minus sign. Restart normally and see if it will start.

  • Boot-up fails, stuck on blue screen

My powerbook g4 won't boot. It makes the startup sound, displays the apple logo, then the blue line climbs up slowly and it then sticks on a blank blue screen with only the arrow cursor.
Have read I should try PRAM and SMC resets, but it's very important I know if these will cause loss of files saved on the hard drive. There are some very important files on my HD, so can anybody suggest what it's possible to do without deleting anything, or a way to recover these before reinstalling everything?
    Many thanks,
    Peggy

Resetting PRAM and SMC shouldn't cause anything to go missing, though any time your Mac won't boot there's SOME risk right there.
Can you boot the Mac OS X Install CD/DVD? Running Disk Utility and checking/fixing permissions and the HD would be a good thing to try.
You could also try a "safe boot" by holding down the Shift key right after the "chime".

  • My 2011 iMac wont boot up and stuck on white screen with flashing folder and question mark ???

Im running Lion OS and I made update after it asks me to restart the iMac when i pressed restart it never boots again :S please help and how i can get my data back

Try starting the it by holding down the shift key (safe mode) if it starts then check your hard drive with disk utility. Also repair your disk permissions.  If you are unable to start the computer try Lion recovery mode.

Saying that it can't find the last boot volume and that you need to use control panel to set startup disk or repair/restore and that your boot drive volume has a bad directory. Try booting from OS X DVD (use c on startup or option key) and go to Utility menu and then Disk Utility.

  • Macbook doesnt startup, gets stuck at blue screen after langauges deleted

    Hi,
Got a mackbook pro running Snow Leapard. I was trying to clean up some space by deleting some language files using monolingual. It started deleting english so i cancelled, and when i restarted it has the grey screen with the apple logo then goes to blue with nothing..
Checking on the net it seems to be the font files. I dont want to just 'reinstall the os'. Surely i can replace the system fonts.
    How can i do so?

  • Stuck at blue screen

It will load up after restart, passing the grey apple logo. When it looks like it's about to finish loading up Mac OSX it gets stuck at blue screen. Tried using Diskwarrior on it but it gets stuck in repair.

First thing to do in this situation is load the MacOS install disk, and reboot the system holding the C key down when you hear the chime until MacOS shows it is loading. This will not on;y show whether the system is basically sound and capable of booting, but also then give you the opportunity to run Disk Utility (in the Utilities menu of the installer) to check the hard drive for errors, and if any are found, attempt to repair them.
You'll need a wired USB keyboard (almost any will do, but NOT the Apple aluminium model) to boot to the installer.
When Disk Utility had finished the Repair Disk task, it if shows no faults, then you have a MacOS problem and likely need to perform an archive and install to set up a new copy of MacOS while preserving your files and applications. If Disk Utility shows errors it cannot repair, particularly reporting 'error on exit', it generally means the drive has suffered a problem. In those situations DiskWarrior is sometimes successful at recovery, though often a reformat is needed. In a small proportion of cases this problem is indicative of hardware failure - usually the hard drive itself, in which case a reformat would generally be expected to fail.
Be aware of course that reformatting the drive will wipe any and all data, so should not be done unless and until you have secured essential data.

  • HP w1907 : Powering-up gets stuck at blue "HP invent" Boot Screen

    Hello all,
I've HP w1907 desktop... I am using it since 2008.
Last month I've format it to have new windows 7 Ultimate in it... Previously also I was using win7 Ultimate.
But it was keep restarting after the use of 4-5 minutes and so I've installed the OS all over again.
It was working fine... after 3-4 weeks, when I started it, it gets stuck at blue "HP invent" Boot Screen.
This screen has the instructions for entering the "Boot Menu", "Setup", and "System Recovery" by pressing the "Esc", "F10", aor "F11" key.  It just sits there forever.
If I try to enter the "Boot Menu"by pressing the "Esc" key, I get a message "Loading Boot Menu.....", but then it just hangs there forever.  If I try to enter the  "Setup Menu" I get a similar result - it says "Entering Setup...", and just hangs there.  Pressing the "F11" key doesn't seem to do anything.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
By searching forums I've tried resetting the BIOS - which I've got from here :

After doing this also, the result is zero
    Please help me...

    Hello Sir,
    You was right...
    The CMOS Battery was discharged!
I've replaced it ... and the date and time problem has been solved...
And you was right again by saying that it should not cause the problem while start up...
So the second problem (Major Problem) was CD Writer !!!
(I've changed the location of the PC last 3-4 weeks ago!!)
may be the it has grabbed the hardware of CD Writer..
And as the hardware of CD Writer was not working as per the expectation the BIOS may have got stuck...
And so it was unable to enter in Boot or Setup menu !!
I've removed the data and supply cord of CD Writer... PC is working good now...
I am thankful to you sir.. for your thourough help..
Without you it may not happened
Now I am going to repair the CD Writer by opening it tomorrow..
Any help from you will be great help to me and its really appriciable..
    God Bless You...
    Thanks for your valuable time.
