IMac not picking up external hardwares

Recently, probably started a week ago when I started using MobileMe sync, my iMac stop picking up external hardwares even if they are connected. For example, my iPod and external hard drives are plugged in to iMac via firewire but they don't show on the screen.
The bizarre thing is, if I restarted my computer or shut down then restart, the hardwares appeared. When I disconnect them and reconnect, they wouldn't show up the second time. I called tech support and they said it may be a software issue.
Is there a command I can use to actively search for connected wares or is it a glitch?

Same thing here with my maxtor after using it for 3 years with no problems. Started with a error message of "improper device removal". Went on for a few days. Then it wouldn't mount. I go to "about this computer"/ more info / devices/ firewire and it says unknown device. Attached to an emac on my network and same results. Attached it to my old manapua mac at home, and it works great. Brought in another Maxtor from home and back to square 1, unknown device. Is my Intel based imac eating up my external hard drives?? It also destroyed 2 different iomegas, said I had to reformat. is there a drive reader program that will fix this issue?

  • Finder not picking up external HD

I have an external HD that have connected to the mac before in fact I believe it is in OX forma, but regardless when I connect the drive I can see if it disk utility but I can select it. It doesn't show up in finder but I do get a message saying that it can't be read because it is in a unreadable format. The HD has been setting and was last connected to a PS3, because I was viewing some videos on it. But I would like to access said videos. Is there a way, perhaps in terminal, to access this sucker or at least if it is lost to the tech-gremlins, can I at least access it to reformat. I tried connected it to a PC, and the drive does show up but when I click it, it freezes up windows and I have to do a force reboot to get out of it.

    Hi Deepu,
PKMC is checking whether or not the material used within the control Cycle (CC) is foreseen at the storage location assigned to the PSA for MRP planning or not.
This is controlled via a setting within the material master data.
Please check the MRP indicator on the MRP4 tab (choose the storage location assigned to the PSA) of the material master.
Is the MRP indicator set to 1 --> the material can be used for Kanban without MRP forecast planning (PO, scheduling lines, transport order or source list)
Is the MRP indicator set to blank --> the material can be used for Kanban with MRP forecast planning (Kanban Jit Calls, container control MRP)
When you set up a CC PKMC is checking this MRP indicator and just the replenishment strategies alligned to the MRP indicator are shown.
    Best regards
    Hans
P.S.: I looks like you are actually working in a Kanban project. Please have a look at SAP's standard Kanban training --> SCM350 to get a comprehensive view of the SAP eKanban processes and who to set up these processes within SAP ERP

  • External Microphone Not Picking Up Sound

    Hello,
I recently bought a product that works better with an external micorphone headset. This was my first time ever using one with my laptop. When I went through the set up process, the microphone was not picking up any sound and I could not hear anything through the external headset.  I tried using both the microphone and headset port as well as different headsets with the same result. The headsets work fine on other devices.
When I use just a plain headset connected through the headset port, I can hear just fine.
I went to Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Sound>Manage Audio Devices to troubleshoot, but nothing worked. I tryed updating the latest drivers and was told the latest are already installed.
The Product Name is : HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC
The Product # (NOT serial number) is : B5R46UA#ABA
The External Mic is called: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

    Hi @chriscinthed ,
You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. It will also fix the sound.
When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices and the headset. Disconnect all non-essential devices as they can cause issues.
In talking to Rosetta Stone says the headsets for use with there software is for USB connected headphones Plug and Play technology. The other computers you have tried do they have Beats Audio.  To enable or disable Beats Audio, press the fn key in combination with the b key. The Jack does have influence on the Beats Audio which might need to be turned off. Then try the Mic.
Did you ensure that you are plugging the Mic headset into the selection for headsets on the Notebook.
    Thanks.

  • External hard drive not picked up

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook Air 2012, I have been using a ADATA Nobility external HD with it from the start. Now out of the blue my mac does not want to detect it.
I have looked for it under disk utility etc etc. but still can't find it. I have returned the HD to ADATA and they reported back to me that there was a software issue that they solved, and it has passed all their tests. Now that I just got it back, the mac still does not pick it up. I have tried my other external HD and that works fine on the mac and windows.
    Please help.

You can call ADATA back and ask their help in setting the external HD up.
If they cannot help, you should return it promptly.
    Best.

  • External Hardware not Recognized

Prior to installing Leopard, I could plug in or turn on external hardware devices (e.g. cameras, USB Duo Audio preamp, printer/scanner) AFTER booting the computer and the machine would immediately recognize them. With Leopard, I now must restart the machine any time I turn on or plug in external devices.
Anyone else experienced this, and/or is there a solution?

Friday's http://www.macfixit.com had a note about USB drives and about LaCie.
Also, even FirmTek's SeriTek controllers for eSATA have an issue with sleep and having to unmount drives first.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com
I'd say there was some major changes under the hood affecting how all disk drives are now handled.
In some cases you probably will need to or consider reformatting to get a drive to work.
IN most OS releases, there had to be firmware updates for FireWire (Oxford, Lacie, etc) devices.
So... quite common in some ways.
Odd that this is affecting consumer electronics now though

  • My Macbook Air does not pick up wifi from Airport but iMac, iPad and iPhone do. Help please.

My Macbook Air does not pick up wifi from Airport but iMac, iPad and iPhone do. Help please.

Are you testing in the same room as the TC?
Power cycle the TC.. does it show up now?
Has it ever showed up .. ie is this a problem that just started from an existing setup, or has never worked?
Is the TC new? If old how old?
If you continue to have issues.. setup the TC from iMac and preferably using ethernet.
Change the wireless names to SMB compatible ones, short no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Use WPA2 Personal security only.
Then set the wireless channels manually.. try 11, 6, 1 for 2.4ghz and try 36 or 40 at 5ghz.
    Tell us how that goes.

  • Setting up a WiFi network from iMac... works on "old" iMac, not "new"

    Hello,
I hope I'm not crazy, or even worse, stupid.
I an running two iMacs in my home office. Old one= 21" 2 Ghz PowerPC G5, purchased summer 2005 and still running like a champ.  New one=27" 2.7 Ghz Intel i5. Purchased the new one July 2011. I have a cable modem plugged into the ethernet port on the old iMac. I've been accessing internet on new iMac with wifi and the internet sharing network I set up on old one. I also use wifi on my ipad and laptop. I have never had even a single dropped wifi connection on any of these devices.
I pretty much expected the same kind of result and performance when I reset the cable modem and plugged it into the new imac and took similiar steps to set up  internet sharing/wifi network on new iMac. This has not been the case.
    What's happening is:
The cable modem plugged to new iMac is working fine; verified with ISP. I set up wifi network on new iMac and turn on internet sharing. I locate my network name on ipad, laptop, even the old iMac, and I see the name in the list, so I figure so far so good. The signal icon appears in menu bar as usual. I open a web site to verify it's working. And it's working...for about 20 seconds. Then I get alert messages that there is no internet connection.
After creating a bunch of new networks and changing channels, changing type of security, even passwords, I realized I wasn't going to figure this out by myself. I'm not a technical person; Apple spoiled me and I stopped learning how to do anything except plug stuff in 20 years ago.
I started researching online including these discussion boards and answers have ranged from "It's the iMac! It's a hardware problem they never fixed! The aluminum case gets too hot!" to, "there's no airport card and you have to buy an external router."  I gave up and called Apple, thinking surely they'd be able to give me a straight answer. Ha ha. Nope.
Of course the bottom line is I could buy applecare (haven't yet...haven't used the computer hardly and I'm still under warranty), I could buy telephone tech support, or I can take the machine to the geniuses.
I keep thinking this can't be that complicated. When I buy a new iMac--this is my 4th one--I expect things will get easier, not this complicated mess.
Oh, last I want to include I just reversed everything back to the way it was. My old iMac is connected to the cable modem and the old iMac is back to being my wifi network, sharing internet with the new imac, my ipad and laptop. Easy as pie.
I'm making an appointment with the geniuseses but hoping it's just something I'm too dumb to realize I'm doing wrong.
Thank you in advance for your patience; any help is much appreciated!

It never occurred to me that the wireless network/internet sharing thing wouldn't work just as well if not better on a brand new machine with the improved technologies I pretty much expect. Metal could be interfering with the signal? The machine is aluminum!! I'm no engineer but that seems kind of...flawed.  I just don't understand.
I think the WiFi antenna is near an edge of the computer to avoid being encased in metal. It should work like t did in your old computer, but as I said, the use of a Mac to share an internet signal is much less common than use of a router so even if the newer computers have a non-optimal design, it might not get widely noticed in forums like these.
Sounds like AppleCare is what you want, so I'd get it and then have them check that your Mac is transmitting thru the wireless card/antenna as strongly as it should be. The antenna clearly works as you can RECEIVE a signal, but the transmitter uses different circuitry than the receiver. By the way, I think AppleCare is a good thing to get for iMacs and for laptops as they are very compact and tend to be more prone to thermal problems than other desktop computers.
I have no idea about routers aside from, of course, the apple air port one that the phone tech support guy mentioned. Are there others that are less money and just as good? I don't feel like rewarding apple for selling me a product that doesn't do what the earlier geration machines did without a problem. Seems like they shouldn't make another $200 because of their flaw. My old iMac's wifi signal was strong enough for a 3500 square foot house, 2 laptops and an iphone.
Would getting an external router definitely solve my problem? Which one would you recommend if I go that route?
I also did not understand why the Apple routers (Airport) were so much more expensive than other brands. So I purchased a linksys n router some years ago and it has worked quite well. They are very easy to configure through an ordinary web browser (some Mac folks prefer the Airport utilities that are used to configure the Airport routers, but I find the web browser interface very easy to use for the non-Apple routers), and they are in very widespread use (linksys isn't the only brand that is good for this, there are others, but I've had good experience with both Belkin and Linksys). You can get very high performing n routers from Belkin and Linksys for under $100. I'd get a router that has dual band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), and I think most include standard features like MAC filtering (a security measure), WPA2 security, and I thiink offering Gigabit ethernet ports would be good also in case you connect something to it like a hard drive server or a printer or want a fast local network sometime in the future.
I think the router will solve your problem and do a better job of wirelessly distributing your internet signal, but if the problem is due to a faulty wireless card (that receives fine but doesn't transmit properly) in the new iMac, I'd want to get that fixed under warranty (or AppleCare) now rather than later.
One more thing: if your wireless card in the new iMac is working properly but the physical layout is such that the internet sharing isn't working well, you OUGHT to be able to eventually get it to work by moving the other devices you are sharing with around to different locations, as eventually one should end up in a spot that works. If nothing can receive the shared internet from the new iMac, even when 3 feet away, then something might well be wrong with the new iMac's transmitter.

  • Imac wont boot of external devices

    Hi,
This is a very strange problem.
I want to reinstall my windows partition and install windows again for bootcamp but cannot do so because the computer does not think that the bootable device is there, it does not like windows disks but happily accepts mac os x disks to boot from.
I am using A external dvd rom to boot the windows disk from and it does not come up when you boot up the computer and you hit the alt key when it boots, i have also tried to install windows from a external hdd that does not come up either in the boot menu ( i know it is bootable because i booted it from a PC)
Another thing I have tried is installing rEFIt and that does not pick it up.
The OS once booted into leopard finds the drive fine.
I have reset the DRAM thing and no luck.
I am seriously at my wits end with this.
Can some one help with this, it would be very much appreciated.

Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
Whereas, not everyone here with an Intel iMac has installed, tried to install or has experience with BC & Windows, everyone there has or at least has an interest. You may attract help more quickly there.
    The Forums are at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology. Here is a link;

  • How do I use iMac as monitor for external DVD player (HDMI to Mini DisplayPort)

iMac 27" (late 2009).  Internal DVD is region locked.  I would like to use an external DVD player to watch DVD's from other regions.
I can't use the new Apple SuperDrive because they say it's not compatible with iMac's before 2012. (Is it??)
My iMac doesn't have Thunderbolt.  It has mini displayport.
I have resigned to getting a generic DVD player and plugging it into the screen.
I have found this in Apple support pages...
Can I use the iMac in TDM as a display for my gaming console, DVD player, or other device?
The Mini DisplayPort port on a supported iMac can receive DisplayPort compliant video and audio signals. Converters not made by Apple may provide options to convert other electrical, video, and audio protocols to Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt compliant signals.
What is DisplayPort compliant video and audio signals?  Does HDMI fit into that signal type?
Is it possible to get an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort converter?
Will it work if I get a generic DVD player with HDMI output? (and connect it to the iMac through MiniDisplayPort)

    First try VLC.
    <http://www.videolan.org>
On many Macs, it will play DVDs even if the region codes don't match.
The Apple SuperDrive should work if you use the terminal (Utilities foldsr) command:
    sudo nvram boot-args="mbasd=1"
There are also non-Apple USB or FireWire external DVD (and Blu-ray) drives, such as:
    <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/>
Apple's DVD player may not work with external drives, but you can use VLC or Blu-ray™ Player
    <http://www.macblurayplayer.com>
There is a converter to connect HDMI to the iMac via TDM
    <http://www.kanexlive.com/xd>
but it will run at 720p (1280 x 720) and may have problems with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) on HDMI from Blu-ray or DVD players.
