IMac not starting fully... going to full fans + HD not mounting

Hi. I'm using (or was using) a Rev. A iMac G5 17" 1.8Ghz with 1GB memory (of which 512 is third-party), running OSX 10.4.8
Recently I've been getting a fair few kernel panics, and I think (though I'm not entirely sure on this - it might just be me being forgetful) that the computer may have shut itself down when I wasn't in the room.
Very recently, I've noticed it having trouble playing certain DVDs either in DVD player or VLC - though it can do normal video files fine - and it's been taking at least 1 minute to shut down, when it only takes 30 secs to start up.
Additionally, I've been unplugging my Voyager 105 USB modem every time I shut down or restart, because this would cause it to get tothe point of shutting down the screen, then hanging for about 30 seconds before going to full fan speed.
A couple of days ago, when my brother switched on his computer next door (which is connected via ethernet), my computer froze completely (no force-quitting or anything worked), so I had to shut down with the power button. When I tried to restart it, it got to the grey apple logo stage, then hung for about 1 min before going to full fan speed and staying there.
I've run Disk utility from the DVD, and it has told me that the HD will not mount, and Apple Hardware check told me '2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus 0-Master'.
I've reset the PRAM, and whilt trying to remember the key combo, I managed to bring up a console which showed a load of code and stuff about Kernel panics and ended ominously: "We are hanging here..."
I've heard about the recall programme for Rev. As with power and video problems, but this seems to be a problem with the HD bus.. might it be related?
I'd really appreciate any help as there are one or two irreplacable files on my HD that are not backed up and are of great value to me. That being said, I also don't have the applecare protection plan and I'm a student, so I really can't afford to get it seen to (along with the fact that I live about 4 hours away from the nearest Apple store)
Thank you!
iMac G5 17" - Rev. A   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB Ram

You would be considered lucky if your Mac fell in the repair program here: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/ - you can find your Mac's serial number by using System Profiler...
If you machine does appear on the list, I suggest you call Apple, say your having power issues and take it from there. If your Mac does not fall within the serial numbers, I would still call apple and explain that you're just a poor student in need of help...
Good luck, Rick

I am getting an error that my start up disk is full and I need to delete some files.  I may be an idiot but where do I find this disk/place  on here or is it just I need to move some photos/possibly videos to an external drive to free up space overall?

just I need to move some photos/possibly videos to an external drive to free up space overall?
Depends on how much space you need to free up. Rule of thumb, never allow the free space to fall below 15% of the capacity of the hard drive.
    Help here.

To view free space go to Applications / Utilities. Launch Disk Utility. Select the startup disk on the left then click the FirstAid tab.

You can also right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click Get Info. Capacity & Available info from the Get Info panel.

  • Intel iMac not mounting disc

    Friends...
I am sore from banging my head on my desk. I have a 18 month old Intel 20" iMac with 4Gb of RAM. After upgrading to 10.5.6 I can no longer mount CDs or DVDs.
I load a discs and the drive thinks about it then nothing happens. I then CANNOT eject the disc without rebooting. Sounds like busted hardware, no?
Here's the kicker... when I boot from a leopard DVD, works fine OR if I boot option off I can then see CDs and DVDs.
I am at a loss, since it's obviously not hardware flaw. Any help before I suck it up and pay for a repair?
    TIA
    M

Eric, when you start/restart the computer, just after the start-up noise, press and hold the mouse left click. Make sure is a USB cable mouse. The iMac should eject the CD/DVD stuck inside.
Also, if it's just a software problem, you should be able to start from the Installation Disk without any problems. Insert the Installtion Disk and press C at start-up.
If you have another Mac with a DVD drive, put that one in Target Disk Mode (press T after the start-up sound) and connect it to the iMac using a Firewire cable. Start the iMac and press Option key. You should see the Installation Disk from the other computer.

  • My iMac does not start up as usual. Start up disk is full message and I do not get normal desk top. Please can you help? Thanks

My iMac does not start up as usual. I now get a ' start up disk is full. You need to make space available on your start up disk by deleting files' message.
I am able to key my log on password however I just get the purple galaxy screen with no desktop.
If I try to use the keyboard I get a tone when pressing the keys.
Has worked perfectly well up until I got this dusk full message.
    Can anyone help please. Thanks

Your going to have to follow the Data Recovery Efforts page here to be able to access your drive and remove files without booting the computer.
You can't open the iMac so you will need OS X booted from a external drive or via Firewire Target Disk Mode using another Mac.

I would concentrate on Movies as this is a big source of large files to free up room.

If you not handy with computers, your going to have to hire a local service or provide the info above to someone you know who can, it's not easy.

  • Imac intel start up problems and fan runs constantly on high

I got my Imac 17 Intel Duo Core on March 16th and 10 minutes after I started it the screen went black and a little light started flashing on the lower right. After holding the power button it finally turned off but would not boot up, just that black screen and blinking light. I was told by tech to unplug everything for a few minutes then put the plug in just the Imac, then hold the power button down while plugging it in. Well it started after that but the fan was on high constantly. This was remedied by unplugging everything for a few minutes and then starting back up normally. Now it runs in stealth mode being virtually silent. If your Imac intel is making noise it's not normal. Check out this site for noise problems.

I second Dave it needs to go back to service. What I have heard happens sometime is one of the temperature sensors is either not put back on properly during reassembly or it comes of soon after. With an incorrect temperature reading that particular fan will run at full speed. You can check the fan speeds by installing iStat Pro: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27037

  • Imac not booting, Able to get to disk ulility with snow leopard disk.  Tap on had disk, not given choice to do anything.  Information list that smart is certified and partition map is us formatted.  How do I get mac to start up again?

Imac not starting up, keep getting white screen.  Using snow leopard.  Able to get to disk utilities with snow leopard installation disk.  Tap on had disk, not given choice to certified disk or anything else.  Information on disk states that smart status is certified.  Partition map I formatted.  Also tried to restore from back up, but get error:  not enough disk space.  Tried to erase disk, but unable.  What do I do next to get mac to start up?

Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.

  • Why does my Imac screen slide and I lose my screen?  It goes back to my desktop.  Then sometimes my screen goes to full screen and I don't know how to get out of it.

Why does my Imac screen slide and I lose my screen ~ It goes back to my desktop.
Then sometimes my screen goes to full screen without me doing any commands, and I don't know how to get out of it without going to force quit and starting all over.

    Hi,
When it goes full screen try moving the mouse up to top right of scren & see if there a double diagonal Arrow to click on.
On the other see if it's the silly implentation of Spaces/Mission Control/Expose in ML...

  • I keep getting a "start up disc is full" message on my iMac (running leopard)-  its a new mac so can't be full?

I keep getting a "start up disc is full" message on my iMac (OSX 10.7.3 running leopard).  It can't be full the mac is only a few months old - please help - I am not a computer whizz so treat me gently!!

Do you have any external hard drives attached that your system might be booting from? Did you create multiple partitions on your hard drive, one of which may be full? These are a couple of possibilities, and there may be others.
I suggest powering on your system then immediately hold down the option key. Your system should display the system picker screen showing all bootable volumes. Do you see just one boot volume show up?
I also suggest launching the Activity Monitor application that can be found in the Applications/Utilities folder. Click on the 'Disk Usage' option to see how much drive space is available as shown below. You may also want to use the Disk Utility application to verify the hard drive and file permissions. Both of these are options available within the application.

  • Start up disk is full in my iMac

my imac is 500GB and it says start up disk is full, so i deleted most of unwanted things in my imac. when i press Command + I on my home folder it says i used 170GB but when i press Command + I on the MAC HD icon in desktop it says 0 bytes free! My trash is empty.  i'm using MAC OS 10.8. can some one help me

Be sure you Empty the Trash after you put files into the Trash.
It's probable that your drive's directory is corrupt as a result of running out of disk space. You will need to repair the hard drive after you have freed up enough space.
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Get an external hard drive on which to store some of your files after which you can
erase the data from your internal drive to free up space.
      5. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      6. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      7. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Just downloaded FACETIME on my 4yr. olf Imac running Snow Leopard. When making a call to my friend's Imac all works correctly going both ways. When my wife calls me via Facetime from her Ipad, I cannot click on "accept"- not there? When called by the Imac (newest), the "accept" or "reject" radio button appears for me to click and connect. On my wife's Ipad the two radio buttons always appear when a call actiivates Facetime and comes on?
There is nothing I can find in "Preferences" in Facetime to turn that on or off. I suspect it has to do with having a more current operating system; that the "controls" are in the operating system? [I'm guessing] It's frustrating getting Facebook calls from several friends on Ipads! Any ideas...VFP

I suspect it has to do with not having a more current operating system
Exactly, what Apple is doing is leveraging new features only on newer OS X versions to force you to upgrade OS X to 10.7 or later.
What they don't tell you is 10.7 or later will NOT run your PowerPC based software, some of it you can't get Intel versions like for perfectly working printers, scanners and games etc. So it can be a very expensive OS X upgrade to 10.7 or later with third party software.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also they don't tell you is the risk in bricking your machine if the update goes badly, so you have to have AppleCare in case that occurs so it's on them to fix it. Else your paying money to replace the logicboard or buying a new machine prematurely.
A four year old machine can't have AppleCare, it's only good for 3 years from date of purchase new.
Your machine came with a boot hard drive, it's usually got about 4-5 years of life on it, then it needs to be replaced.
Also they don't tell you the newer OS X version has more abilities and features that causes your machine to slow down in performance, especially on older machines.
Also they implement new, idotic and extremely fustrating new user interface features in a arbitrary "you take it or leave it" manner with little or no fall back method.
So upgrading OS X is a gamble on older machines that otherwise would likely work perfectly fine for the next 5 years if one didn't need to have to mess with it.
Since Snow Leopard has slightly over 25% OS X version market share, your still good for security updates etc for the next few years if you just want to stay where your at and be happy.
OS X 10.4/10.5 need to upgrade, 10.6.8 ok still
The Lions are, well, not so welcome due to Scott Forstall retard UI issues, OS X Mavericks 10.9 is likely going to fix things a bit better.
But basically what is occuring is Apple is trying to force a faster hardware upgrade cycle with the more expensive products by leveraging features on the smaller devices that expire sooner.
Apple is a hardware company that leverages whatever it can to get you to buy more hardware, it's why they are as rich as they are.
