IMac not working

I surfing the web when all of a sudden my iMac froze. I waited a bit since this has happened before. When nothing happened i restarted my computer. When I restarted, I'm not able to open any apps on the Mac. I can't select anything on my apple menu. Nothing I do makes it work? Any suggestions as to what the problem might be or how to get my Mac working normally again?

After starting Disk Utility you will want to select your startup volume in the list of volumes (it will have the same name as the hard drive on your desktop) and then click *Repair Disk*. Do not repair permissions.

  • Second monitor on iMac not working with Lion

I have a mid-2011 Thunderbolt 21.5" iMac. A secondary monitor is connected to the iMac with a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable (a single cable, not an adaptor and cable).
When I was running Snow Leopard, the monitor worked just fine. After upgrading to Lion, the second monitor just has a black screen, and quickly goes into power save mode.
I have already tried resetting the NVRAM (as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379) and resetting the SMC (as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964).
Has anyone seen this problem? Any other suggestions for solutions?

same here, just performed the upgrade to Lion and my secondary Samsung screen (direct HDMI cable) do not work anymore (I have a mid 2011 iMac 21.5'').
I have tried the tricks mentioned on the following discussion:
No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade
    ie open terminal
    cd /System/Library/Displays/Overrides/DisplayVendorID-410c/
    sudo mv DisplayProductID-0  DisplayProductID-0.old
    Reboot after entering the commands
But it is not working, the developper clearly messed up the video output in Lion OS!!!
Let me know if you have a solution, I am reduced  to single screen use in the meantime... and regret the upgrade...
    Thanks

  • WLan connected, iPad and iPhone internet ok, iMac not working after trying everything (manual ip etc...)

I am quite new with a mac computer. But i think i nearly tried everything, i have no idea what else could help...
My iPhone and iPad are working perfektly in the wlan. My iMac works very rarely. Yes it worked once by manual ip, but later it did not work again.
Wlan always works (sometmes it takes a few seconds until thesymbol is fat, mostly it starts with "no internet")
    I tried so many things...
    - manual ip found out by my windows pc
    - $ in front of the password
    - the apple faqs on the websites
Very strange, but i hope someone solved an comparable problem already ;)
    Thx!

I had a surfstick before, does that influence the whole thing?
And another thing: in other wlans the iMac worked perfectly... Without any manual settings etc.
    Anyone an idea?

  • TS4185 Facetime on new IMAC not working

My apple id doesn't work at all (says network issues).  I looked at the troubleshooting guide and everything is set as it should.  I tried going to Facetime
"preferences" but I can't even select it.  Operating on 10.7.4.  I bought this computer today and facetime has not worked at all or ever had the preferences option able to be selected.  Help.

    Same thing happens to me.
I purchased OS X 10.8.2 and am trying to use Facetime on my Intel Based iMac .  I have repeatedly done all of the following:
    #1 -
Verify your Mac meets the FaceTime system requirements
      Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac9,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2.93 GHz
    #2
Verify that you are using a valid Apple ID at appleid.apple.com.
    #3
Check that your email address is verified in  FaceTime > Preferences.   This info. from Apple is wrong.  My FaceTime Preferences are grayed out!
I can't believe that Apple has gotten so bad!  As my User Name shows, this iMac is my 18th Mac.  I began with an Apple IIe.  For heaven's sake if anyone knows why FaceTime doesn't work given all I've tried please give me a clue as to what I need to do.

  • Imac not working properly in wifi connection

Even after 10.7.3 upgrade the wifi connection is still not working properlly.Every the IMAC switch to idle the wifi disconnect and never reconnect automaticly

    same problem here !

  • USB ports on my iMac not working

I tried to connect a battery from something else through a USB port on my iMac and there was a prompt that "the device was drawing too much power and that the USB port will be shut down". I, being foolish enough, plugged it in the other USB port and the same thing happened and this time the computer automatically shut down. I turned it on and neither of the 2 USB ports (out of the total 4) have been working since then.
I tried shutting the the computer down and restarting after an hour but they're still not working. Does anyone know how to fix this!!!

Sounds like the port overload protection for those ports has tripped.
    Reset the SMC >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    4. Release the power button.
    5. Attach the computers power cable.
    6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Then if that does not reset them, disconnect everything and let the iMac sit disconnected for 10 or 15 minutes.

  • Wi-fi on iMac not working, but works on other laptops

    Hi there,
I've recently moved back home with my new iMac, and when I went to try to set up wi-fi on it for the first time, it didn't work. I received a message that "Wi-fi has the self-assigned IP address ____ and will not be able to connect to the internet.". I don't understand why it's not working when I'm currently typing this from my macbook pro which connects perfectly fine, as well as my iPhone, and my parents laptops as well. The wi-fi worked perfectly fine at my old placres
I've tried resetting my modem and router, restarting my computer, turning wi-fi on and off, deleting the keychain access for the network, and tons of other suggested solutions but to no avail. I also just tried manually imputting my IP and that told me it connected, but the network icon still showed an exclamation mark, and I wasn't able to load any websites.
Needless to say, I'm extremely frustrated about this, and nothing seems to work. Are there any other solutions I can try? I really don't know what would be causing this.

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.

  • Password for imessage on my imac not working

I went on vacation for a week. The imac was turned off. I turned it one today. Everything works except for imessage and facetime. I was asked for the appleID passwords for both and entered them in but they failed. The AppleID password worked fine for iTunes. I changed it anyway. Message and Facetime still do not work. Nor does the new password work on my ipads anymore. ***?

  • Wired Keyboard on 2014 iMac not working

    Hi there,
I have a lab containing 25 x 27" 2014 imacs. During a morning start up roughly 6 out of the 25 (and usually different ones each time) will be unable to detect the wired apple keyboard that is attached. All USB ports on every machine are working correctly. To resolve this issue, sometimes it works by just swapping the ports, sometimes a full reboot will do it, other times it comes down to swapping the keyboard with its neighbouring iMac (even if both are not detected) and miraculously they both are now detected.
Resetting SMC and PRAM does not fix the issue.
What is going on? All these keyboards work fine when attached to a 2011 iMac running the same OS (Mavericks.)
    Thanks,
    Dudley

Reset the SMC and PRAM 2-3 times back to back using the following instructions:
    iMac SMC and PRAM reset
If that does not work, try using another wired keyboard.

  • PLEASE HELP!! iMac not working

    Help required!!!
    I'll start from the beginning,
Last Friday I had an issue with accessing my wireless network from my iMac, I called my ISP (Virgin Media) who asked me to hard wire the mac to the router, I had to move the mac from its desk to next to the router, so shut down and moved it to where the router was in another room. Virgin made some changes to the router, and I still couldn't access the router wirelessly, virgin asked me to shut the mac down and restart, on rebooting I got the white screen with the apple logo and then it shut it self down I tried this a couple of times with virgin on the phone, after a couple of attempts they said it was obviously a problem with the mac and not with them and said I should call them if I get the mac working and the wireless still doesn't work. I was left very worried as the mac was now worse than when I called them, luckily I have an iPad so was able to get online to diagnose the problem with the mac.
I moved the mac to back to its original place on the desk and started to try and fix it!! thankfully I have my files backed up. the following is a list of things I have tried over the last 4 days and my results.
    1. Reset the SMC, no use same problem.
    2. Restarted the mac using the leopard installation discs, first of all the disc said that os installed wasn't correct, so went to disc utility to view problems with the hard disc, the verify disc diagnosed a invalid node structure. Looked this up online and the majority of forums were recommending a erase and install, so I erased the HDD, and as I had seen somewhere else online partitioned the drive into a start-up disc and another for storing files etc... (not sure if this was needed, but I did it anyway, and it wasn't the first time I had seen this advice). After the erase, I re-checked the disc using verify disc, hooray no problems!! So I thought!!
    3. re-installed leopard, seemed to install ok, once in, I did another disc check all ok, so I started to re-install my software iLife '09, iWorks '09, all working ok. Updated iTunes to the latest version, started to import over from backup, my music, videos etc.. and iTunes stated that it need Safari 3, so updated quite a bit, leopard 10.5.8 combo update, security updates, iLife updates etc... including Safari 3.
    4. Installed updates and restarted the mac, on reboot the computer went to a blue screen and stuck there, tried rebooting a couple of times, reset the PRAM as suggested on a forum, No Joy!!
    5. followed item C on the following page http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1545, didn't work!! So Restarted using the installation disc, and carried out an archive and install, all seemed to be ok until I started up and logged on now Spotlight keeps crashing, to the point it doesn't actually load anything!!!
I know there is a lot here to get you head around, and believe me I've tried to keep this as concise as possible.
I would appreciate any help, as I'm getting quite frustrated... I'm snowed in can't take it to a Genius Bar...
MAny Thanks in advance James Lyall

Hi - Well, you've certainly had a good go at trying to fix things. Bad luck that you still have problems.
Just to throw in a couple of other things you could try, have you tried a Safe Boot
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
Also 'repair permissions'? If you manage to boot from the Macintosh HD: Utilities>Disk Utility and select Macintosh HD on the left and click 'repair permissions'.
Not sure about the merits of partitioning the HD as you describe. If you need to re-install again maybe worth reverting to a single partition so that the drive is like they leave the factory, as it were.
    Good luck.

  • Help - Sharing media between different accounts on single iMac not working

So, we have an iMac with 2 user accounts.  We wanted to simply share the media between accounts and I read these instructions from Apple Support which are very straightforward and easy enough to follow.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
Basically, the article states you move the "iTunes Media" folder into the Public or other Shared file location and then you point each user account's copy of iTunes to that specific location for the iTunes media folder in preferences/advanced menu.
All of that was very simple and worked great, but the only problem is on the 2nd user account when I re-open iTunes, none of that media is there.  I checked again inside the 2nd user iTunes preferences/advanced and it is definitely pointing to the right place.  Per the specific instructions in the article, I tried both ~/Public as well as the Users/Shared too - both times I can see it fine from the main account but nothing from the 2nd user account.
Does anyone have any suggestions??  Thanks!

    Adam,
iPhoto was not designed to be a multi-user application. While you can let other accounts view your photo collection by sharing, it gets messy when more than one owner has add and delete capabilities.
Having said that, you could probably do a similar thing with the iPhoto Library folder as what you've described with iTunes. Refer to the iPhoto Help topic "Moving the iPhoto Library to a new location".

    Hello Everyone,
Ok here is the problem my HP LaserJet 1020 has been working fine up until i upgraded to Snow Leopard i am currently running (10.6.2) and i have had heaps of issues with Snow Leopard i just don't know whats wrong with it i thought it was supposed to be Finely Tuned. Anyways guys if there is anyone that can help me get my HP LaserJet 1020 to work it would be much appreciated because i havent had much errors or issues with Mac in the past until now this sudden upgrade to Snow Leopard.
    Current Operating System:
    Mac OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.2
    iMac 4 Inch/ 500GB HDD/ 4GB RAM /2.93 GHz
Thanks Your Help Would Be Very Much Appreciated

    Hi maxskingsley,
If you are still unable to print from your iMac, the first thing to check wouId be that the printer and the iMac are on the same network.
Now if both devices are on the same network, next I would suggest an uninstall, and reinstall of the software for the printer. To start, I have included the document 'Uninstalling the Printer Software' http://bit.ly/1amRotF. Please click on your operating system, and follow through the steps.
When the software is uninstalled, you will need to reset the printing system of your Mac. I have included the document 'OS X Mavericks: Reset the printing system' http://bit.ly/1bS2qrh. At this point you do not have to re-add the printer. After resetting the print system on the Mac, the next step will be to complete a verify and repair of the disk permissions. I have included the document 'Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions' http://bit.ly/1bjFnnP. For step 3, the disk that you do want to select is the hard drive. One the repair of the disk permissions is complete, please restart your Mac.
At this point you will need to reinstall the software for your printer. I have included a link to download the 'HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers - OS X 10.9 Mavericks' http://bit.ly/1lC0Orf. After the download has completed, please open the software, and follow through the on screen instruction for installing the printer.
The last step will be to make sure that you have all the latest updates from Apple. Please click on the Apple icon, and then Software Update. Please install all available updates.
Now please try to print from the iMac. Are you able to print successfully?
    Regards.

  • New imac not working properlyHELP

Hi I have had a new imac for a week. I cannot get on to an apple site at all, had to get here with my Sony laptop. It just hangs when I try to load an apple website, and if I get it to load, I cannot get to support pages WHY
Also today iphoto stopped working, it says it needs to be upgraded, and just closes. What gives
    Help please

So far, what you describe does not sound like a hardware problem. Try creating a new user admin user account
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
It may just be you current user account is corrupted in some way, and therefore "broke."
Log out of your usual account (from the bottom of the Apple menu). You will get to the login screen, where you should see that new account you created. Select it and log in to the new account. Your iMac will be using fresh user preference files in the new account. Try the same things that do no work in your usual account.
