IMac on Snow Leopard crashes after uploading photos from camera

I helped my father's boss transfer over files from his old iMac to his new iMac using Migration Assistant over ethernet cable last week. All was well and running fine when I left (I also ran Software Update, and rebooted to make sure everything was REALLY ok).
Tonight his wife uploaded some photos directly from her camera into iPhoto, the machine completely froze up, she cold booted it, and when it came back up again, the desktop photo had changed, all the dock icons were different, and the photos she had uploaded were gone. Has anyone had this happen to them? I have a REALLY hard time believing the computer did anything on its own. My guesses right now (it's late here, I'm heading over in the morning) are:
--she logged into a wrong user account on reboot (though there should only be one on there)
--something got corrupted during the migration that I didn't notice the first time around
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! (I'm not sure if it's 10.6.1 or 2, but it's BRAND new and therefore definitely on 10.6)

Check the camera manufacture's site to make sure it's Mac 10.6 compatible and if it is, download and install Mac OS X compatible drivers.
Then repair disk permisisons.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Doubt this. If the camera isn't compatible or is missing the software this would have happened on any user account.

If the old iMac is a PowePC (not Intel), it's possible files that were migrated would need Rosetta installed. Rosetta enables applications compiled for the PowerPC family of processors to run on Apple systems that use Intel processors.
Rosetta can be installed from the new iMac install disc. "optional installs.pkg"

  • 8.2 update - unable to upload photos from Camera app

I downloaded the 8.2 update, and now I can't seem to upload photos from the Camera app to Facebook when I check-in. It only brings up my videos from the Camera app, not the photos. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    You're welcome.
It is needed by the FaceBook app in order to upload photos with the app. You need it on for the apps that require location services in order to use the app or to use the location services function included with the app. You don't necessarily need it on for every app - that is up to you.
The arrow in the menu bar means location services is being actively used by an app.
The arrow next to an app at Settings > Location Services means the app has requested your location within the last 24 hours.

  • Organizer 9 crashes after uploading images from my phone?

    Hello all,
I have about 150 photos on my cell phone stored on a MicroSD card, which I just uploaded to the Organizer.  After the upload was complete, a box popped up that said there was a problem and the program needed to close.  Now, every time I open the Organizer, after about 10 seconds it does the same thing.  I can't get the program to run at all.  Any thoughts on this?
Also, when I try to add photos from my old folders on my computer to the Organizer, it will begin the transfer and then stop abruptly and say there is a problem and the files can't be imported.  None of the photos that it had already processed are added to the Organizer, and I can't figure out what is causing it to crash.  Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Jennifer

  • Since installing snow leopard I cannot import photos from Kodak camera anymore..

I recently upgraded from 10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6.3. Previously I had no problems importing photos from my old Kodak Easyshare camera into i-photo, but I now get an "unreadable files" message when I try to import photos. Is there any way to solve this please?

This could be your SD card in the camera.  Often, if the SD cards needs to be reformatted, this can occure.
You can try importing the images in Image Capture.  If this works, I would suggest reformatting the SD card, or replacing the SD card.
Try opening the application "Image Capture"
    - you should see the camera in the left hand column - select it
    - the images should load on the screen
    - in the bottom middle menu / "import to" , change to "iPhoto", then click "import" or "import all" or "download some" or "download all"
    - iPhoto will bounce, and display what is being imported

  • Can't upload photos from camera

Have 12 pix to upload from camera (Canon Eos 50 D) to my IMac.   Been doing this for over 5 years with no problem till now.  Battery is good,  even tried the plug in battery just in case.   Cable plugs into camera,  then to my keyboard,  turn camera on but nothing happens.   Even turned off my back up,  just in case.   Camera gives no indication that battery is no good,  since all systems work:  menu, slideshow, etc.
    Thanks.

    Hello mingdurga,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you are unable to import photos from your Canon camera to your Mac because the Mac doesn’t recognize that the camera is connected. There are two different articles that I would suggest reading over in this situation. The first article has information, that you may already be familiar with, explains importing photos from a camera to your Mac.

The next article is one that I would suggest reading over for troubleshooting. Please review the Top troubleshooting tips section of this article for assistance.

  • How do I upload photos from camera to computer

Hi, I have a Macbook with MAC OS X 10.5.2 software, a Sanyo/Sprint phone, and a data cable. I want to transfer photos from my phone onto my computer. I managed to plug the data cable into the phone, and into the USB port on the computer, but I don't know what to do next. There isn't an option on my phone camera to upload or export, so can I do this through the computer somehow? I'm sorta' desperate, it's for an important project.

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
Don't you need some special Sanyo software? Check their website.
What does the Sanyo manual say about tranferring data between the phone and a Mac?

  • Uploading photos from cam to external hard drive with I photo

I have my computer set up to have photos on external hard drive, with I photo library. when I plug my SD card in, and I photo uploads, it puts them directly on to my computer, rather then my external HD.
    1. How do I change settings so it defaults my downloads to EHD
    2. How do I transfer those photos back onto my hard drive from one Iphoto library to the next?
    3. How do I copy photos from i photo to a separate folder?

I have my computer set up to have photos on external hard drive, with I photo library. when I plug my SD card in, and I photo uploads, it puts them directly on to my computer, rather then my external HD.
I'm not clear - do you have multiple iPhoto libraries or are you trying to use a referenced library (not recommended) with the referenced photos on the external drive?
    1. How do I change settings so it defaults my downloads to EHD
To set the default iPhoto library depress the option key and launch iPhoto - select the iPhoto library you want as the default
    2. How do I transfer those photos back onto my hard drive from one Iphoto library to the next?
The easiest way to move photos with all of their associated metadata between libraries is using iPhoto library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
    3. How do I copy photos from i photo to a separate folder?
select the photos and export (file menu ==> export) them

  • After downloading photos from camera ... having problems sorting them ...

Once I have downloaded an assortment of photos from my camera, I place them into separate folders according to the category I have named. In so doing, the photos are in the album, but remain in the import file which for some reason did not do so whenever I performed this task. What now occurs, is when I go to remove the photos in the imported file, it also removes them from the album.
I am confused with what I am doing to cause this occurrence. I used to perform this task successfully when in the import screen without losing the photos once I placed them in their respective albums.
Need help to sort myself out. I am a stickler for categorizing my photos according to the occasion. It makes it so easy to retrieve them whenever I want to send them to friends or to groups.
Hope I can resolve my confusion in what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks!

I used to be able to sort my imported photos without the aforementioned occurrence. It appears to occur using a new camera.

Thank you, Terence, for the information. I'm going to mull this over because what you have mentioned is rather abstract to my diminishing grey cells. When I returned to iPhoto, in the Photos' List, the photos I had categorized were in tact and none of the other photos were included.
Much for me to consider when importing photos and my placing them into folders but forget about 'trashing' what is in the Import file, because as you say, this is only a shortcut.
Again, thanks for shedding some light on my dimly lit understanding of iPhoto and its importing photos.

  • IPhoto crashed after uploading photos. Tried restart but crashed again. Message that library is damaged. I don't have a backup. How to restore library?

I uploaded new photos and put into albums. When I tried to open album, iPhoto shut down. Got error message and clicked on reopen. Tried again and it happened again. When I opened it again it said there was damage and offered a button to restore. I clicked it and then got this: "Your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup." Help, no backup. Is there any way to recover the library?

1 - you really must ahve a backup - without one it is just a matter of time until you lose all of your files including your photos - bad things happen, hopefully this is not the time but it will happen sooner or later - purchase a large hard drive (2 1/2 times the size of yoru main drive) that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and start runnint Time Machine so youwill have hourly backps
2 - start by rebuilding - backup  your iPhoto library, depress and hold the command and options keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild yoru database

  • HT1766 Has anyone else had a problem with their phone after using the cable to upload photos from Camera stream to computer photo program?  My phone is frozen, cannot get into use phone, cannot connect to the Internet, and even APPLE is stumped.

I only have my IPhone5 for two months and am very upset that now they may need to give me a new phone and lose anything that may not have been recently backed up by the phone.  Has anyone else had this problem?  How did you reseolve it?  Hard reboots did not help.

It pains me to hear about your experience with the Home Phone Connect.  This device usually works seamlessly and is a great alternative to a landline phone.  It sounds like we've done our fair share of work on your account here.  I'm going to go ahead and send you a Private Message so that we can access your account and review any open tickets for you.  I look forward to speaking with you.

  • Adobe Collage crashes on inserting photo from camera roll

adobe Collage on my ipad 2 repeatedly crashes without fail when I attempt to insert a photo. Any ideas. Tried restarting app and iPad, and reinstalling still crashes.

    Hi Marko,
One way that you can help us find the root of this problem is to send us the crash report that is generated when this happen.
First sync your device with iTunes, then do the following to locate the crash log:
If you are using iTunes on Mac OS X, then you can find the crash report in the following location:
    ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<your iDevice’s name>/
Look for a crash log that contains "Collage" in its file name. Pick the log that was generated at the time when you observed the camera roll crash.
On Windows XP, the location is:
         C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/<your iDevice’s name>
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, the location is:
         C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Applecomputer\Logs\CrashReporter/ MobileDevice\<your iDevice’s name>\
Send the crash log to jsbache "at" adobe.com
    Thank you for your help

  • Uploading photos from camera memory card are being duplicated

    Hi,
When loading phoots into iphoto from a memory card we are getting two images of the same photo (same identifier as well) into the iphoto event. I've looked over many previous threads and have unticked the duplicate options in preferences/advanced, but this isn't making any difference. Any further tips?
    Thanks.

provide details if you want help
The general answser is that iPhoto does not in any case duplicate photos during import - one wild guess given that you provide absoluely no information at all would be that you have a new DLSR and have set it to shoot RAW plus JPEG so you are creating two copies of each photo which iPhoto will most certainly import - if that is it the solution is to set the camera correctly to either RAW or JPEG

  • ITunes 10.5 on Snow Leopard crashes

My iTunes 10.5 on Snow Leopard crashes after several minutes from starting. I've tried to reinstall it many times, but nothing helps. What should I do to solve this problem?

Very many thanks to you, Putaro!  Your answer provided the solution. It was a buggy plug-in that turned out to be the culprit.
You're off the hook, Apple, and my apologies for stating that you let a dog run loose. You skated by this time, Apple. But I'm watching you.
But again, Putaro's reference to the plugins I had installed over the years turned out to illuminate the problem. I have several plugins in my iTunes plugins folder, pretty much all designed to add more visualizer functionality. I removed all of them, and ALL of the problems I noted in my post went away, with full iTunes functionality restored.
I began adding the plugins back to hopefully single out the culprit. Among the ones I had been using included fielder, G-Force, Timestrech, volcanokit, QuartzComposer, and Jax. I hadn't used any of them in a while - probably at least a verison or more back in iTunes updates, but iTunes continued to work with all of them installed. Currently, only QuartzComposer continues to work in iTunes 10.4. The rest no longer even show up as visualizer opitons, with one exception. Jax does show up, but does not work. AND THE PRESENCE OF JAX IS WHAT KILLED MY ITUNES.
I looked into it and went back to the developer, and it appears that they discontinued developing Jax some time ago - evidently, it was buggy and crash prone. I remember after buying it, having problems with it - having never worked to its touted potential, but I didn't pursue it, and never uninstalled it. Leaving it in there caused all iTunes functionality to cease with the iTunes 10.4 update.
If you've got Jax installed, consider removing it before updating to iTunes 10.4.
My iTunes is now working right as rain, thanks again to Putaro!

  • Snow Leopard crashes because of gdb

    Hello all,
I am debugging a binary (assembly only) using GDB 6.3.50-20050815 (Apple version gdb-1510) installed via latest XCode version and I am interested in watching $EAX for a specific value.
The problem is whenever I set a watchpoint for a register ("watch $eax", or "watch $eax == 0x12345678" i.e.) and issue "continue", the system crashes right away and I get rebooted. If I single-step it, there is no problem, until I continue the execution.
I've tried setting it to use software watchpoint (expecting a less severe error), but still Snow Leopard crashes.
On GDB 7.1 I was facing a similar problem (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4670185/snow-leopard-crashes-after-gdb-attemp ts-to-access-an-address-using-watchpoints) but I let it go since this was a too fresh gdb version. But I don't think this is the case for watching a register on 6.3.
Any ideia? I wonder is there is any log that I could look at.
    Thanks

Just before reproducing the crash I generated a debug dummy message ("sdsdsd") as a checkpoint, using "logger", and there was any log message further this one (besides the bootup ones, of course). Bootup messages don't say anything. I checked it using Console and Profiler.
I was also looking forward to see any log or gdb dump.
UPDATE: crash happens for watching a specific value and not for a general watch ("watch $eax" is fine; "watch $eax == 0x12345678" reboots).

  • HELP I can't import my photos from my Cannon to the Cannon app on my imac on Snow Leopard!

HELP - I just installed Snow Leopard & though I've uploaded photos from my Cannon Power Shot A590, since then ... But today while it opened the Cannon "Camera WIndow" & looks like the photos are being uploaded, an iMac box appears showing a: "failed to initialize program" message!!! Why
I've tried several times & can't import my latest photos from my Cannon to the Cannon app on my iMac, it doesn't recognize it? (I look at them there & often delete photos from the camera, then I import them to iPhoto.)
I've had a number of problems with Snow Leopard - in iPhoto, iWork, etc, since installing it. What gives?

I would also suggest that you check out iPhoto or Image Capture - both already in the Applications folder on your Mac - which should be heaps better than the Canon software. And, for what it's worth, you actually do not need any software to get pics onto your Mac - if you have your preferences set to display external drives on your desktop, the Canon icon should show up as soon as you plug it in. You can simply double click the icon and then look at the pics with Preview to decide if you want to keep or ditch it.
And the problems with your SL install most likely are the result of other apps not being up to date or compatible with SL - that happens every time. You need to check on compatibility of all the apps you have to you'll know what needs to be updated.
