IMac operates at snail's pace

My iMac speed has dropped to a crawl. It is also slow when booted from external backup disk. Help please?

Our power was out for ten hours, but we have a whole house generator, so not too bad.
I suppose the time comes whan a computer just plain wears out, and if your problem is hardware, it may be time to replace it.  However, try one more thing, start up in Safe Mode:
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
   1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
   2. Press the power button.
   3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
   4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.
See if that makes things a bit snappier...

I have upgraded my MAC OS to 10.6.8.
Final Cut Pro 5.0 still runs great, but Soundtrack Pro 1.01 opens, but operates at a glacial pace.  It does not functionally operate.
What can be done to remedy this?

Depending on the configuration of the computer hardware and software
you may need to consider upgrade the RAM by installing more capacity.
Also, in the same vane, choose to consider upgrade the hard drive to
one of faster transfer, such as SSD, hybrid, or fusion; if not already at
least 7200-RPM and not too full of saved content.
Since no information is given about the model build configuration of Mac
there may be other suggestions to make it work better. Usually an OS X
upgrade requires one to look at the hardware resources available to it.
The OS X works best with more memory: new higher capacity chips.
This may be possible, and they should be high quality from reputable
vender who has tested them on Apple in OS X, such as OWC or Crucial.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT1430 how do i log off icloud on my mac book air? It's slowed the MBA to snail's pace

how do i log off icloud on my mac book air? It's slowed the MBA to snail's pace. I have no reason to use icloud on MBA. I have an iphone that's functional & MBA's only a wordprocessor network'd to other machines & server. iclould serves NO FUNCTION on MBA. I have tried to remove it but have been unable to "log out".

Icloud is a web based service.  If you are not actively using it, then it has no effect on your MBA.

  • Snail's Pace Processor

My 21/2 year Intel iMAC is running at a snails pace. No unusual processes running, system memory running fine with plenty of room...almost 20GB left on the 320GB main drive, ran Onyx, ran the fix persmissions and other utilities...but the processor slows down doing anything. What can I do?

Sir, I appreciate your quick response. I had assumed that too and have had the HARDEST time clearing space. However the system has been running with this much drive space used for a long time and run fabulously well...no recent downloads of anything.
When I try to move my Logic or Amazon Music folders over to an external drive, it seemd that it grinds a way for an hour, only to tell me some file could not be moved. Is this the time machine formatting on the external drive causing this? Can I unformat one of my 1T external drives and just move a copy of the whole HD over for starters?
Also...I download most of my music from Amazon, then import it into iTunes. Is it sitting in duplicate in the Amazon Folder and the iTunes folder and I can get rid of the Amazon music files if they are in iTunes (they seem to be duplicates in the folders)?
For the most part, this all started when I attempted to start uploading my music (107GB) to the Amazon Cloud (unlimited storage) and the Google Cloud. I have tried clearing out the uplaoders but the Google Music Manager keeps popping back up, though they are not attempting to do anything. I got a little uploaded from to each (not at the same time) and now they just freeze up.

  • Imac operates slowly with 4 active users

if all 4 users have apps open (mostly Chrome), free virtual memory becomes minimal. imac is 2.7GHz intel core i5 with 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory.  In order to avoid the color wheel/freezing, we have to close chrome or similar in some of the users.

This is normal. The more users you have logged on and the more programs you have open, the slower your computer gets.
    I hope I helped.

  • Message "itunes has stopped working". Itunes opens and can read an audio cd but as soon as the "get information" option is selected the message "itunes has stopped working" and the computer freezes or at least slows to a snail's pace.

    Hi,
I have a PC running Windows 7 - 64bit OS. I have had iTunes installed since the beginning of the year on this computer and have not had any trouble with it except actually using iTunes but that is a different issue. The other day I inadvertently downloaded "Tuneup" which I don't want or need. I firstly want to say I have no concrete evidence that Tuneup has led to my problems. It may be coincidental that Tuneup and my problems appeared together.
Tonight when I started iTunes, Tuneup took over a quarter of the screen on the right side. I closed this program. When the list of tracks was ready to be loaded from the CD and I went to" file" - "get info" option the message "iTunes has stopped working" would appear. Closing this message resulted in iTunes shutting down. I should say that before I closed the message the computer had essentially ground to a halt. The other curious thing was the behavour of the mouse pointer on the screen - the only place where it was visible was in the "iTunes has stopped working" box. Moving it out of the message box resulted in it disappearing. It would reappear if it were caused to wander into the message box.
I subsequently removed Tuneup (control panel, programs and features, etc...) iTunes had not improved. I then deleted iTunes, firstly saving the library to a file on the desktop. Then I did a fresh(?) install of ITunes but there seems to be no change. A curious thing was even though I had deleted iTunes through the control panel the library was still there as if I had done nothing. The whole thing is a complete mystery and extremely galling.
If someone has had a similar problem I would really like to know what the fixes were.
    Thanks for "listening".
    Cheers,
    Grant Andrews.

I had a similar problem. I'm using 64bit Windows7. The following solution worked for me:
    COPY    QTMovieWin.dll
    FROM    c:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\
    INTO     c:\program files (x86)/iTunes
Also, reinstalling Quicktime has worked for others having this same issue.

  • MBP running at a snail's pace, and a myriad of other interrelated issues, please help :'-(

Hello, my MBP is running very slowly, MS Office for Mac constantly freezing, Safari constantly freezing, various little issues are arising with many different functions/programs when I try to use them; i.e., the enter key will just stop working in Excel or my Adobe Acrobat will shut itself down out of nowhere, Finder freezes and/or won't relaunch; these are just a few examples, but the overall theme is that I am experiencing problems in usability and functionality with my MBP across the board. There is no rhyme or reason to any of it, and all programs and apps seem to be affected. I first began noticing the problems upon installation of the Yosemite upgrade so initially thought that was the issue, but I have since found that malware items have added themselves to my Safari extensions. I found instructions to remove them entirely, but could not find them anywhere on my computer other than the Safari extensions when I followed the steps provided. I tried clicking "uninstall", but had no luck, which is not surprising since I am pretty sure the "uninstall" option listed with the extension is just part of the malware. I have "disabled" the extensions, but that didn't do anything. I'm sure that they have implanted themselves elsewhere and are lurking in the shadows of my operating system and wreaking havoc throughout my computer.
The whole situation is making it extremely difficult to get anything done, and if I don't fix it soon it is going to be the major contributing factor to my complete mental collapse.
    PLEASE HELP!!!
I tried to find suggestions in other areas of the Apple Support Community, and found the EtreCheck tool in one of the discussion threads. I ran the report on my system, and it looks like my MPB is riddled with problems. I don't even know where to begin in order to correct them. I am not sure if the malware has just taken over and is behind all of these, or if I am dealing with several different sources of trouble.
Any help with this would be much appreciated, the EtreCheck report is as follows:
    Problem description:
MBP usability decreased significantly after installing Yosemite. Computer constantly freezing and completing any task in any program/using any function of MBP takes 5-10x as long as it used to.

I primarily buy from Crucial, Other World Computing, or MemoryTen. As long as they have a "configurator" where you pick you exact Mac from a list and it lists all the compatible memory for that Mac, AND it has a lifetime warranty on the RAM, it should be ok.  Macs are very picky about the RAM because they use it to its full capacity. If there are any faults in the modules, it will crash.
There are suggestions for sites in other parts of the world on the EveryMac website. Look down in the Section for RAM where you'll find links to their sponsors (OWC is the US-based one).
In Apple's world, there is a difference between and "Upgrade" and an "Update." Updates should generally be installed as they patch vulnerabilities and fix bugs.
Upgrades on the other hand are an entirely new Operating System (OS). A change in the OS can cause many problems with your installed software as it may not be compatible with the changes. It may rely on programming interfaces that have been removed. They should know that they will be removed as Apple publishes those facts many years prior to removing the features.
An Upgrade takes you to a major, new version of software whereas and Update just makes changes to the same major version of the software.
Yosemite was an Upgrade, not an Update.

  • HELP: My mail program is running at a snail's pace...

My Mail program has slowed to a crawl. Everything else on my computer is running fine, but even with nothing else running, every single function takes forever. Things that should be instantaneous (selecting text, positioning the cursor, changing font, etc.) takes several minutes. It's almost unusable.
I've looked online, and followed the instructions:
    (from: http://danwarne.com/is-apple-mail-running-slow-speed-it-up/)
"You can check your current 'envelope archive' size by entering this in the terminal:
    ls -lah ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index
Then to optimise it (cleans out stuff that has been marked for deletion but not actually deleted, defragments the structure, etc):
    sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum;
Then check your envelope archive size again to see the results…
    ls -lah ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index
It compacted my envelope archive down from 55MB to 50MB — not a huge increase, but the speed difference was dramatic.
In particular, my 'sent mail' folder which had been taking 10 – 15 seconds to open (8,000 items) now only takes two or three seconds."
That didn't work, so I tried this:
    (from: http://www.macworld.com/article/56673/2007/03/mailfix.html)
    "The Brute Force solution
This solution forces Mail to build a completely new Envelope Index from scratch. It’s not my preferred solution, but it will ensure that you’re starting with a completely clean index file.
Quit Mail, and in the Finder, navigate to your user’s Libary -> Mail folder, and then move the file named Envelope Index out to the desktop. When you relaunch Mail, it will tell you it needs to import your messages. Click Continue and then just wait—it took about a minute to import 9,900 messages on my MacBook Pro. When the import is done, you should be looking at Mail just as it was before—but with any luck it will be running more quickly, and any odd message-related issues you were having should be resolved."
    That didn't work either.
I check my Activity Monitor and have at least 80% of my cpu idle, and about 960 mb free system memory, so there doesn't seem to be anything hogging up the processors.
My livelihood is dependent upon access to email. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know ASAP.
    Thanks very much!

  • DTM slows my laptop's internet connection to a snail's pace

I have a new Dell Latitude 6410, Intel i5, 4GB, running Win7 Ultimate.  Without DTM installed, my internet download rate is over 6 mbps.  With DTM installed, my rate drops to under 4 kbps (yes, kilobytes)!  I need my internet connection to run fast but I would also like to use DTM to sync my BB.  Any ideas?  Thanks, Mike

I thought the internet sharing via iPhone USB would do the trick but I can't seem to get it working.
Thats because what you're tyring to is not possible.  Internet sharing is for sharing the phones cellular connection over wifi, not the other way around.
which I cannot do without an internet connnection.
Is there a reason why phones standard cellular connection doesn't work for you?

    Hi, Dr.Rowlin.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you are experiencing issues downloading from the Mac App Store, here is a helpful troubleshooting article.

Also, you will have to free up space on your computer to allow the install of Yosemite.
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8, already installed
2 GB or more of memory
8 GB or more of available disk space

  • Mail in mountain lion working at a snail's pace

I've seen several posts that are somewhat similar, but not enough to see a solution. I did not have this problem in Lion, but since upgrading, it takes forever to open mail and have it download messages. Calling up the "force quit" window shows that mail is switching between "not responding" and normal modes, and sometimes just stays in not responding mode. Usually, waiting half an hour will download new mail.

Thanks for taking the time to help out. Here's the list of messages, it's quite long (there were no crash reports):

  • Indesign 2 slows down to a snail's pace after 10-15 min. Help!

I have used Indesign with Creative Suite 2 Premium for a few years with no problems. About 6 months ago I bought an external hard drive to use as a back up device for my hard drive. Not long after that I had problems with my computer and figured out that the external drive was causing a problem with startup of the hard disk. So now I leave it turned off except for times when I want to back up files. I give that history because that's the only problems I've had. A few months ago I had the same thing happen with Indesign slowing down after use. I've tried having it as the only program running. I've tried only using it after startup. Nothings seems to make a difference. I have to reboot the computer to get it to be functional for about 10-15 min. All other programs on my computer are running normally including Illustrator and Photoshop. Should I just upgrade? Uninstall & reinstall? I don't know much about changing my system settings or the super technical stuff. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

There are a lot of things that can cause slowdowns.
Disable Version Cue if you don't use it, for starters. Then look at the hard drive. How much free space do you have? Empty the recycle bin and the temp folders, and defrag.
Run virus and spyware scans. You might be surprised by what's running without your permission and using system resources.

  • Mac Pro slowing to a snail's pace and hard drive constantly active

My Mac Pro is running very slowly. Programs are slow to load, I frequently get "beach balls" for non-intensive operations, and the hard disk never seems to stop. Both Safari and Firefox are especially slow. This is without running any resource intensive programs like video editors, or Photoshop. My wife is having the same problem on her account on the same computer. I have repaired disk permissions, reset PRAM, manually run the daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance scripts, and even done a reformat and reinstall. Only about 3/8 of the primary hard drive is used. Any help would be appreciated.

    Leroy,
I did restart in Safe Mode and the computer seemed to run fine. Then went to System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and removed what I thought were the suspect programs, namely Shove Box, Butler, and Smart Reporter. I then restarted my computer normally, and left it on all night. Now the computer is back to running very slowly without the suspect programs running. To give you an example, iTunes took over 45 seconds to load completely.
The question I have is how do I tell what programs are not loaded when I boot in Safe Mode and what programs are loaded when do not boot in safe mode. That way I can try to figure out which program is causing the problems. I did review the article you linked to, and could not find anything that looked problematic except that the Caches folder in my Library folder is 905.3 M. As I write this my hard drive is whirling away for no apparent reason.
In reference to The Hatter's comment, that I could have a corrupt Spotlight index or database would that fit in with the facts that we have thus far?
