IMac operating really slow

Hi, I have a G5 iMac, which for the last couple of weeks has been operating really slow. I've tried re-starting it, re-setting my Airport, in case it is internet related but it still keeps operating slowly. I get the spinning beach ball while it is thinking and then finally it functions, only to happen again. Occasionally, I get normal operating speed but then it happens again. I'm just going through a software update to see if there's anything I've missed out but is there anyone who is having the same problem, and is there anything anyone can recommend?

Not sure if this is related, Brett, but Apple have just released a new KB page detailing a problem which can occur when using some 3rd party VPN software under OSX 10.4.8:
Issue or symptom
After updating to Mac OS X 10.4.8, if some third-party VPN client software is installed, Activity Monitor may show the AirPort process taking 90% or more of the CPU time, and the computer may seem "slow".
Products affected
Mac OS X 10.4.8
Airport
Solution
Make sure your third-party VPN client software is up-to-date. Contact your network administrator or the manufacturer of your VPN client software.
This document will be updated as more information becomes available.
(from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304798 )
Not sure if this applies to you, but worth considering.
Regardless, you might want to start up Activity Monitor (in your utility folder), open the "Activity Monitor" window, and then choose "active processes" to see if this, or some other software, is hogging your processor.
Cheers
Rod

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let me refer you to an excellent website about maintaining Mac OS X. It also has great troubleshooting tips and ideas. The site is maintained by a regular contributor to the Apple Discussions, Dr. Smoke. The site is the X Lab.
Some of the things that you might try are Repairing Permissions from Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility. Resetting the PRAM. Also making sure that the Cron Scripts have actually been running on your Mac. The X Lab can instruct you in all of these ideas and more.

  • IMac running really slow

I have recently purchased an iMac (6 months old) and I am running 5 applications most of the time: three browsers (safari, chrome and firefox), MS Word and MS Excel. I do run a lot tabs open on the browsers and leave them on for days (about 12 tabs on each browswer). I have to use word and excel for work and need to leave them open with several documents at a time.
here are my problems... after a while, even when I restart, sites wont load, word wont respond and need to forcequit it, sites are slow and a lot of other problems where the computer will not respond for a few minutes and I am stranded looking at the rainbow wheel. I have a colleague sharing the same space with the same imac doing the same tasks plus using photoshop and illustrator but his imac is working fine. Is it something I should consult with Apple? is it a hardware failure? I also have time machine and from time to time it will give me errors that time machine can't connect to the drive or several other different errors.
    I appreciate your input.
Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 8GB
    OS: 10.7.4

It really sounds like you're really taxing both the CPU and RAM.
With the description of the way you work with your iMac, it sounds as of you really need a lot more than 8 GBs of RAM.
OS X, alone, needs to a have a working minimum of 3-4 GBs of RAM to function smoothly and efficiently.
Your iMac can take up to 32 GBs of RAM.
I would advise installing another 4-8 GBs of RAM.
Also, is Spotlight still indexing your drives? This can slow things down, also.
Maybe your friend is running his iMac with more RAM?
As a designer, myself, I would put in as much RAM as I can afford in order to get Adobe Creative Suite to run as fast as I can get it to run.
Photoshop, alone can eat up lots up CPU,GPU, RAM and HD resources.

  • My iMac is really slow and I need advice based on EtreCheck report. Please help?

    Problem description:
Have recently found endless errors, crashes and general slowdown on my recently bought iMac Late 2013. I upgraded to Yosemite which seems to kick this off so took it to a local shop to have Mavericks re-installed as Time Machine Backup would not work. I also installed CleanmyMac to adios the trash and Memory Clean to monitor the Mac State. After running Memory Clean my memory drops continuously until about 1Gb and then Memory Clean kicks in again. The Activity Monitor shows a Kernel Task at the top of the list which, when clicked on, lists a Fault Figure which also is ever increasing. Please help?

The main cause of slow system is due to certain heavy applications running in the background
    We agree on that.
or because of duplicate and hidden files.
Files visible, hidden, the same as other files, do not do anything, unless they happen to cause the disk to be completely or nearly full.  Otherwise they are just 1's and 0's.  They are passive (speaking as a paid file system developer).
These files can't be easily removed.
If they can't be removed, then they are essential to the proper operation of the operating system (such as /private/var/vm/swapfie(s)).  And if you have huge swapfile(s), then it is an indication of running too many RAM hungry apps concurrently, or a Mac that could use more RAM.
So I think using speed up Mac software is the best solution.
Hang around these forums long enough and you will see that in many cases those speed up, clean up, anti-malware apps "ARE" the "certain heavy applications running in the background" to use your own words.  It has been the experience of the long time forum contributors that once these 3rd party utilities are removed, most performance issues and system panics go away.

Any help would be really appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Hello - I am new here.  My 2011 imac is really slow and keeps showing the spinning ball in all applications.  Is there a way to diagnose what is wrong?  I have lots of space left.  Thank you

Hello.  I am new here and have suddenly developed problems with my 2011 imac.  Mac osx 10.7.5

Thank you so much.  I will do that in the morning before I take any further steps.  I really appreciate your help.
    J
If you try to access Spotlight in the morning and it is still indexing, reindex it by following these steps.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409
Sometimes the index is corrupted, or something it is trying to index is, and it hangs up like that.
Re-indexing may free that up and let it work correctly.

  • My Imac got REALLY SLOW.....and the Dock got none of my stuff in it!!!

Starting a few days ago my Imac started to take forever to boot................I checked the startup items and there was nothing there!
I didn't install anything new....and yet the whole system got slower and slower....
This morning I turned it on and guess what..........none of my Dock items were there anymore...the Dock was as if I had just bought the computer with all the defaults and none of the programs I had there!!! and ever since it finished booting up which took about 15 minutes....I tryed to go online and every time I click on something it takes forever to load, it took 8 minutes to open Safari!!!!!
Its like nothing works..I have a 1GB of RAM in it plus the 512MB of Ram that came with it which for some reason it is not reading...I saw...when I added that new Ram.....
But...why in the world my Dock got screwd up.....and why am I so **** slow? I don't get it!
    HELP PLEASE!!!
    Thank you,
    L.
    Imac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi L,
First thing, if it were me, if Mac is not reading the extra Ram, take it out and see how your machine performs. If it works significantly better, try reinstalling Ram by carefully but firmly seating it. Reboot machine and see how it performs. If it sees extra Ram but is still performing poorly, I think you have bad Ram and need it replaced. If your machine does not see Ram, just remove it, this is important. Bad Ram can cause many many things that you would think could not happen.
Booting up 15 minutes or Safari 8 minutes is not nearly normal. If you have an intel Mac you can also try reset SMC or if you have iMac G5 you can reset SMU, read articles thouroghly and understand...
Let us know what happens, Good luck, Rick

  • Imac runs really slow

    imac doesn't run that well

As you can see, i have nothing running and still the memory usage is over 4 gigs on Mavericks.
Yesterdag i upgraded my mac to 12gb of RAM memory.
Before my update and upgrade my Mac was running on ML and it was just running fine on 4 gb RAM.
And i had a lot of apps open. After the update, my Mac went to freeze all the time and the coloured ball was all the time on my screen.
I also have a MBA and this one is also going slow after installing Mavericks.
I hope that Apple finds its way back, because now im not amused of it.
I called AppleCare because of the 90 days help they give because of the update. And they also couldn't help me out. The employer who helped me, told me that he didn't heared it before and that my complain was the first.
After he saying this, i told him to look at those forums Apple supports. Maybe he could learn something of it.
If they don't solve these problems im going to downgrade my iMac and MBA to ML.
Hope that someone has got an solution or finds it pretty soon.
    Kind Regards

  • Does anyones iMac/macbook seem slower since upgrade to ios5 on the iphone/ipod.

When I upgraded my iphone to IOS5 my imac seemed REALLY slow.  It even locked up several times.  I upgraded the RAM to 4GB but that didn't hlep much.  I did my kids Ipod and the same thing happened.  Could it be a issue with the processes during the upgrade?  How do I take care of it?

same problem here except that I can download other podcasts - have you found any solutions?

  • My iMac is running REALLY slow - could my hard disc be dying?

    I have a 27" iMac with a Core i7 chip and 8GB of RAM.
It has always worked really fast with absolutely everything I have tried with it.
It worked fast in Snow Leopard. I upgraded it to Lion in September and it still worked fast (though a tiny bit slower perhaps than Snow Leopard).
In the last week, the machine's speed has slowed to an absolute crawl and I am almost constantly getting the spinning beach ball.
By a crawl, I mean that opening iTunes can take five minutes. Opening the Applications folder inside Finder can take five minutes. During times of this slowness, the spinning beach ball animates and I can move the mouse cursor, but I cannot get any response from the machine.
The machine is so slow that it is basically unuseable - I cannot wait five minutes to open a document!
What is really odd is that the computer will be really slow for 4-5 minutes, and then for perhaps 40 seconds or so I will get maybe one minute where things work at normal speed, before the speed drops back to a crawl.
Even restarting the computer takes an age.
My theory is that something in the computer has malfunctioned - either the motherboard or the hard disc.
I have run a few disc utilities (Disk Utility, Apple Hardware Diagnostic, TechTool 5), and the SMART status of the hard disc appears to be good and all reports check back successfully - although they all take longer than I'd expect. Whether that means the hard disc is really fine or not, I'm not clear.
I had one other hard disc die on me once, and that just died and was gone, but if my hard disc is dying then the problem it is showing is intermittent, i.e. it is only working part of the time.
At present I am making a backup of the iMac hard disc by having booted the iMac in Firewire Target Disk mode and manually copying files across. However, so far it has only managed 1GB of about 432GB and is estimating that it will take 2 days to complete the task.
Has anybody got any advice - is the hard disc or the motherboard a likely culprit?
The machine is under warranty at least, but I can't figure out whether to drag the machine into an Apple Store, or to phone AppleCare and get them to pick it up. If the machine would be repaired while I waited at the Apple Store then that would be great but I doubt this would happen.
    Any advice?
P.S. I checked for runaway processes... nothing to find in Activity Monitor. CPU is about 5% max. Lots of free RAM. Hard disc is only half full.

    mccltd wrote:
How do you load lion onto an exteranl disk and boot from it as I would like to give that a try.
I presume its an external usb drive?
    thanks
    Hi,
I used an external hard disc - Western Digital MyBook 500GB drive.
All you do is run the Lion installer, which you can redownload from the Mac App Store if you've bought it. As part of the Lion installer it asks which drive you want to install to.
To save having to redownload the Lion installer every time, once the download has completed from the Mac App Store, but before you have run the installation process, you can extract the disc image and retain it for future use (if you don't extract the disc image, then it gets deleted at the end of the installation process and you'd have to redownload it again next time).

  • Finder is really slow ( 15 sec.) after mavericks update on brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive...

When looking up files it's fine, but when trying to save or open anything through ANY program, i.e. Adobe CS6 programs, Microsoft Word, but also Apple software, finder is really slow (15 sec. or more of the same spinning beach ball) after the OSX Mavericks update on my brand new iMac 27" WITH fusion drive... This ***** really bad because it totally disturbs the smooth workflow I bought the iMac for in the first place...
    Any suggestions?
Already tried 'clearing the plist file' through terminal; didn't work... Rebooting (obviously), didn't work.
Will there be a fix soon?
It's costing me way to much time waiting for the finder to show it's content when working.
Any official word from Apple on this?

I had a similar problem.  Tried repairing disk permissions, tried cleaning up with onyx and applejack with no luck.  Finally what did work was simply starting up in safe mode (hold shift key down after restart) and it sorted itself out
    Hope this works for you

It shows a staggering number of errors on your hard drive. Back up everything now, then boot from your recovery partition and see if Disk Utility can repair your internal hard drive. IF it can;t you may be looking at a new drive.
There was an Apple repair extension program for the 1TB Seagate hard drives in 2009 27-inch iMacs but it has now expired. If you did not take advantage of that program, a failing HD could be the issues.
Adding RAM might help too, but you must get the hard drive issues sorted first.

  • Apps are really slow opening on my brand new iMac any ideas ?

Apps are really slow on my new iMac just got it out of the box and set it up and it seems to take an age to open them compared to my iPad, which is 1st generation. Any ideas ?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you also have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • IMac connects to network but internet connection really slow.

    HI all
I have a Belkin F5D9630-4 router and have WPA security on it. The mac can connect to the network but when i try and surf the web the connection is really slow and most of the time just times out.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem would be great.

    Hi macman3000!
Try using WPA2-Personal instead of WAP. You must access your router through it's main web page in order to make this changes. Make sure you change your security parameters in your Mac also to WPA2-Personal.
I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 and after a long way making it able to connect wireless to my iMac, I had to change the security parameter to WPA2-Personal because of the same problem you have.
