IMac or Power Mac G5?  Moving from PC to Mac

I'm a PC user now and am fed up with Windows. I just recently went to a Mac store and am now a changed man. Here's my delemma. I am an amature photographer and love to use Photoshop Elements. I also do a lot of multitasking for my day job and need power. I will be needing to run a proprietary PC program on the Mac since it is what I use every day. I'm hoping it will work. But once I make the decision to move to the Mac, I'm not sure whether I should go with the iMac or the Power Mac G5. If I max out the iMac with the 2 gb of memory, upgrade the HD to max and the graphics card, it's still cheaper than if I start doing upgrades on the Power Mac. I don't need ridiculous power, but I want to make sure that if I max out the options on the iMac that it will handle heavy duty work. I'm leaning more towards the iMac because of it's compact footprint. I would love, however, one day to have a high definition monitor to do my photos on.
Love to hear some feedback.
Thanks.
Mark

Well, I considered the iMac G5 but was told that the new Intel ones are faster. I'm also concerned that the one PC program I'd like to run on it may be more compatible if I use the iMac Intel. I was also told that Photoshop Elements will be coming out with a version for this Intel chip. If they do, wouldn't the iMac Intel be a better choice?

MARK.......
You could buy a new iMac G5!
That's what I did 2 weeks ago. I went to my Apple
store and tested out
both the Intel iMac and the G5 iSight iMac 20' 2.1.
The G5 iMac is really fast and will definitely do
everything you want it to
do and more. Also, current apps will run natively on
it via PPC. This means
that there is NO EMULATION PROCESS whatsoever so you
don't have Rosetta slowing anything down.
My iMac G5 is by far faster than my Mac Mini and
faster at running apps until they become universal
some time this year or next.
I'm a professional photographer and my G5 iMac is
awesome! The ONLY real reason you would by a PowerMac
is for professional video editing. A PowerMac is
faster at rendering videos and burning them to DVD
and stuff.
I decided to stay with a PPC G5 iMac and might
upgrade next year sometime if really necessary. But
this G5 will definitely work for me and all I need to
do for at least a year if not 2 years.
If you max out a G5 iMac, you'll be more than happy!

I have moved from windows to mac and had to reset my airport express. After the reset I enter the name of the existing network, name the base unit, enter its password twicw and select additional options as join the existing network. It comes back with a screen asking for the name of the base unit and password. Aftre which it starts cycling between "waiting for airport express", "connecting to 'network name'" and ends with an error message. When I try to set up using ethernet cable evrything works but I need wireless (it worked OK just hours ago). Any advice?

    Hello, vgafromva.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Sometimes a simple power cycle of the AirPort can resolve this issue.  However, here is an article I would recommend going through when experiencing issues connecting to Wi-Fi.

Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

I am so glad to hear about your success. As you are new to the Mac environment, I will be glad to help you more.
You said: "I can't change the setup yet but i have access". I don't understand what you mean about changing the setup! Please let me know more about that.
I also recommend to use Boot Camp, which allows you to install windows on a partition of your internal hard drive. This has many benefits. First, you can restart your computer and start up in windows. This makes your Mac device a complete windows machine and you gain the most from your hardware when working in Windows. Second, if a problem occures to your Mac OS X, you can restart your machine in Windows and prevent your data from getting lost. Third, you can import the Windows installed on the boot camp partition in to the Mac OS X using VMWare Fusion and work with it as a virtual machine. In this situation, VMWare enables you to work directly with your Windows in the boot camp partition. So it does not create a file package for the virtual machine in OS X.
Regarding the data safety and reliablity, I strongly recommend using Time Machine. You can also set it up to back up your virtual machines or not. This is possible to set up in the Virtual Machine Preferences Page in VMWare Fusion, or in the Time Machine preferences page in the System Preferences app of OS X.
Please don't hesitate to ask any other question. I will be glad to help you.

  • Moving from PC to Mac

I bought an iMac, but I have a PC full of pictures with 3 External HDD. Now I need transfer all my information like catalogs, license, etc to iMac. I know that 2 of my externals HD isn't compatible with Mac and Mac always ask for format the HD before do anything. How can I proceed?
    Thanks!

Guessing all your hard drives are NTFS? there are many options to make a mac read and write to NFTS Some are free, some cost $20. that will solve that issue
    Google NTFS + MAC
Google Paragon + MAC + NTFS
and all those options are solved
    alternatively
reformat each drive as FAT 32...
    All the rest is easy
I've been running 1 Tb FAT 32's with all the images and the library and accessing that from my PCtop and iMac and with no problems
Lately I've got 2 TB on firewire 800 as main drive,  4TB ( RAID 5) on a server with back up  of all the images, a 2TB USB 2 as backup of the entire process and all is synched with Super Duper and daily back ups and all is working fine
The transition from PC to mac is like waking from a dream, there are some issues, but its only a progressive move to simplicity even at a large cost as you will be told by Jay Lee and others, but welcome to the lighter side and enjoy your mac
I moved over after VISTA...... I now have a brand new mac book pro that  just rocks. It is a different interface, press SPACE to view 90% of any files.....
All the best to your enlightenment

  • First sync after moving from windows to mac

    Hi,
I just decided that I'm fed up with reinstalling and bought a new iMac (OS X). I've found a lot of posts about moving iTunes and music. But Im still afraid to do the first sync.
What I want to know is what will happen with my contacts and callender?
On the old comp I used to sync the iPhone with outlook.
If I sync now with the new library on the mac, will all my contacts and callender be deleted? Or will they be copied from iPhone to mac?
I also have the old iTunes library on an external hard drive. Is that any help?

If you haven't transferred contacts and calendar events from Outlook on your PC to the Address Book and iCal on your Mac and you don't plan on doing so, before syncing this data on your Mac, enter one unique contact in the Address Book and one unique calendar event in iCal on your Mac. Make this up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync of this data, which you want to select.

  • Moving from PC to MAC - Existing external hard drive

I purchased a new iMac yesterday.  This is a change from always using PCs.  I have three external hard drives - one connected via USB and two connected to my internal network.  All three are NTFS partitioned drives.  From what I've read, it looks like I can read the contents of the drives, but not write to them from the new Mac.  Is this correct?  It sounds like I will need to move the contents off of the drives and then reformat them from the new iMac.  Is that correct?  Any better suggestions on how to work with these drives and the new Mac?
    Thanks
    Bill

yeah you are correct if they are in fat32 both osx and windows can read and write
if they are in ntfs osx can only read
if they are in apple file system only osx can read and write

  • Moving from PC to MAc, but want to keep all the old iTunes settings! Help!

I did this just fine, from PC to MacBook. But one problem I'm having is that my new iTunes library on the Mac is completely devoid of my old iTunes settings on my pc - my song ratings, my playlists, all the songs I've had checked and unchecked, date added, etc. Is there any way to migrate (I went from pc to mac, all the music files came over no problem) but to keep your iTunes information so you don't have to sort through all the songs all over again!!! Help!
    Thanks,
    Marty

    Hi Martyputz,
This happened, because iTunes on a Windows doesn't really work like iTunes for Mac. Read this [article|http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itu nes-library-from-a-pc-to-mac-and-back-242468.php] and follow carefully the instructions...
    Hope this helps!

  • Moving from an external mac drive to a pc hd

    Good evening,
Have been reading different posts and different articles from Apple and have a fairly good idea about this situation..but just have a couple of questions.
I have copied these folders and files from my mac to an external drive:
    iTunes Library
    iTunes Music Library.xml
I am currently using itunes on my pc just to listen to a collection of mp3s that I have collected over time..but nothing that I want to sync to my ipod..would like to keep them..but not at the expense of having them jumbled with what I want on my ipod.
Can I copy over the folders and files from my mac external drive and replace the ones already on my pc or do I need to copy them somewhere else on my pc and then have itunes find it? What about the updating the location of each song? Will that be done automatically or is there something I need to do manually?
Have been reading this article about consolidating my library:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
But am not following what to do if I want to get them off of an external drive onto my pc's hard drive. Am concerend about losing playlists and ratings.
Would greatly appreciate any advice or input.
    Thanks
    Tom
    Powrbook G4 12 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

No idea, since I don't have a mac!
Do macs have paths like C:\Program Files? I kinda doubt it.
The only directions I've seen are going from pc to mac in the switch101 pages.
    http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/
You could try it, plop the itl and xml files into the C:\Documents and Settings...... folder I typed above.
And move all the music files.
Either it will work, or worst case, you will have to clear your library and Recreate iTunes Library
edit: that recreate article might be the place to start, instead of consolidate?

  • Moving from PC to MAC - need advice on mass music storage

    Hi all,
I am moving my PC music from an external drive to my iMAC.
I Work as a full time DJ also and have 2 x 1TB external hard drives with nearly 2,500 albums. Now some of these albums are specialist DJ albums which I have tagged myself (with album name - ie, DJ 80s collection 1 - and the name of the songs)
    These work well for me.
    Now my question is this:
When i transfered 1 of the specialist DJ albums over, into iTunes on my iMac it started to break them into separate albums which I don't want.
ok - so what I want to do is this. Keep all my DJ music either on a separate external hard drive and keep them 100% away from iTunes and only drag my proper albums ie, ColdPlay CD etc over where they stay in there proper album form.
I want iTunes on my iMac to stay clean looking with all songs in there proper albums with artwork etc and all my DJ music separate and NOT in iTunes.
If anyone can help the best way of doing this - Brilliant!
ps, is there a separate music player that I can use for my DJ music?
Also is Nero available for Mac - or any FREE software you can recommend?
    Ade

iTunes does allow you to create multiple music libraries -- just hold down the Option key when starting the program. This way you could create one normal, clean library, and have another with your DJ-related songs.
For those DJ-related songs, you might consider replicating the CDs in the form of playlists -- like your DJ 80s Collection.
And for DJ software, you should take a look at DJay (which also runs on the iPhone and the iPad). While not free, it works remarkably well. A demo version is available.
    Good luck.

  • Moving from PowerMac to Mac Mini

I currently have a PowerMac G5 1.8 Ghz, thinking of upgrading and getting a Mac Mini 2.53 Ghz.
I would get a Mac Pro but they are too expensive, they don't offer a lower cost Mac Pro like they did the G5 when I bought mine. My question is how big of a speed increase would I expect? I know the difference is under 1Ghz in speed plus faster memory and bus etc. but I haven't been able to find a comparison online.
My other question is if my Cinema Display will work out of the box. It's the model before they introduced DisplayPort so I guess it connects via DVI and can use the included adapter?
The other thing I would have to get is a FireWire 800 to 400 adapter to hook to the Cinema Display and my MiniStack. I would consider getting an iMac if I didn't already have a monitor and I can't have a glossy screen.

    $2499 isn't very cheap

yes, geekbench numbers! PM G5 (1 core): 1078 & the new Mini 2.53 (2 cores): 3563 which is almost a 3.5x boost in power.
this only test the memory & CPU performance, not the graphics.

if your ministack doesn't have an 800 port, yes, the adapters are available from OWC.

  • Permission when moving from my two Macs to a NAS

    Hello,
My problem is when I move/copy a file or a whole folder from my MBP (OSX10.9) or my iMac (OS10.6.8) to a NAS. If I don't change the file permissions to RW-everyone before I move the folder, then when it lands on the NAS I can't modify the folders (can't write, rename, add anything to the folder), even though I am connecting to it from one of the two computers mentioned above. I understand that it is a file permission issue and how it works, but how can I correct this? I mean in the past I made some mistakes (by not minding the permission before I moved something to the NAS), but how can I change the permissions on the NAS? I tried with terminal, but it doesn't allow me to change the permissions on the folders on the NAS. Not to mention that Get Info at the Finder level is uselss in this case.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    MM

    Thanks Allan,
Here are the details about the NAS:
    Brand: EMC IOmega (now Lenovo)
Model: PX4-300D with 4x2TB SATA drives
NAS connects to Netgear router (Ethernet & WiFi)
Macs connect to NAS via WiFi
Both Macs connect to the NAS via SMB. I also tried CIFS, but the result from the POV of the described problem is the same: negative.

  • Moving from PC to Mac Pro

    Dear All,
Having switched my wife’s laptop for an Imac last year I am now considering switching my desktop to a mac pro. I love using the imac and have just finished my first dvd using imovie and idvd (family video for grandparents). The process was so smooth and convinced me to go down the mac route for myself.
However I have some concerns and would be very grateful if someone could help answer them. I will put them in bullet points for ease:-
    1. I have a cable modem from Virgin (UK) connected to a linksys wireless router and from there by cable to my PC by Ethernet cable. Will I be able to have the same set up with the mac pro?
    2. I have a 24inch display from HP. It has DVI, VGA and HDMI inputs. Will I be able to use this with the mac pro?
    3. I am a photographer and the above screen is calibrated for colour using an eye one. Will I be able to calibrate the screen when connected to a mac pro?
    4. As I said I am a photographer and currently have 4 external hard drives (3 usb2 and 1 Fire wire) connected to my PC. Will I be able to just unplug from the PC and replug into the mac pro and see my files?
    5. I have an iphone and extensive itunes library. Is it possible to switch these across to the mac pro without problems and loss of data?
    6. Finally, My pc has 4gb ram and a dual core 2.66mhz processor running vista. I assume there will be a dramatic speed increase with the mac pro?
I think that is all my major questions and concerns for now. As I said any help appreciated.
    Best regards
    Josh

    Hi Josh,
    1. should be no problem. I have a similar setup (with a Netgear instead of the Linksys) and since in Germany another provider.
    2. Should work quite fine using the DVI-connection since both the GT120 and the 4870 come with a DVI-port.
    3. To my knowledge the Eye One includes a OSX-compatible version of their calibration software and the hardware is compatible.
    4. Mac OSX can read and write to/from harddisk that use the FAT32 file system. Also OSX can read from harddisks that use the NTFS file system, but can only write to them with additional software like NTFS-3G or Paragons NTFS for MAc.
    5. Should be no problem, although I am not that knowledgeable with it. I always had my iTunes library with Mac and besides only have self-made mp3s from my CD-library.
    6. Very likely. The Mac Pro is what they say "Beauty outside. Beast inside."
    Hope it helps
    Stefan
