Imac os x 10.6.8. no sound through speakers

Hello All,
I have a imac os x 10.6.8.  Just last night the sound stop coming through my external speakers (2.0 Altect Lansing)
I have been using this speakers since July 2009. The speaker work because i plugged them in my ipod and cell phone.
The internal speaker work fine, but i just prefer a louder sound through external speakers or headphones.
I tried gently wiggling the jack in the port, nothing, no sound through ex. speakers or headphones.
fyi: just upgraded to 10.6 from 10.5 a month ago
thx in advc

  • New headset, but certain programs are transmitting sound through speakers and not headphones.

    Spoiler (Highlight to read)
    Hello,
    Hello,
I just recently purchased a new headset for gaming but have been having some issues with it and the system sound. One major issue is when I call someone on skype, the sound from Skype or the call will go through the headphones, but any other audio comes out of the speakers. I have also notices that iTunes also does not function when I am in a call as well. Some examples would be if I were to want to watch a YouTube video while in a call, the sound would come through the speakers and not the headphones. However, I did find a fix for it. All I had to do was disable the main speakers and the audio was transmitted to the headphones. Another example would be if I wanted to run games via Steam (Garry's Mod, TF2, ect.), I wouldn't get any sound whatsoever from the game. Not through my speakers or headphones. With one exception, Garry's Mod volume I can hear through the speakers while in a Skype call, but I want the sound to come through the headphones. But with TF2, I get no sound whatsoever. If you need any more information about my issue, please feel free to ask. Thank you.

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I have read your post on how certain programs are transmitting sound through speakers and not the headphones, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To ensure that your headphones are utilized when plugged into your notebook, I recommend following the steps below:
    1. Click the Start button
    2. Click Control Panel
    3. Click on Hardware and Sound (sorting the control panel icons by "category"), and then click on Sound
    4. Under Playback, you should see one or two speaker icons. One of them should already have a green checkmark next to it (which will be your notebook's main speakers). If the second Speakers icon is not visible, right-click in the list of devices and select Show Disabled Devices
    5. A second, disabled icon of "speakers" should appear. Right-click this icon and click Enable
    6. Select the newly enabled speaker device, right-click it, and select "Set as Default Device".
    7. Click Apply.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Can't play sounds through speakers but only through earphones

I got my new iPad2 yesterday and for a while I was able to play sounds through the speakers. Today speaker did not work anymore and I suspect it is related to the upgrade to the new iOS 4.3.3 that I did just before putting it to sleep. Can anybody help?

Have you got notifications muted ? Only notifications (including games) get muted, so the iPod and Videos apps, and headphones, still get sound. Depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can mute notifications by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and its the icon; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085

  • IPhone 4S loss of sound through speakers

Here's an oldie with a twist! My iPhone 4S has lost sound through the speakers. Strangely 90% of the time keyboard clicks work when entering the pass key but nothing after that. I have 'restored' it, cleaned every orifice and 'upgraded' to IOS7. Has anyone got the same problem but more importantly an answer.
    Thanks

Thank you. Trouble is, you clearly live in Apple Land! Across the Pond it's not quite so easy!
I'll make enquiries as to wether we have such Bars.
    Thanks again

  • Hear Crackling+Beeping Sound Through Speakers (intermittently frequent)

When my Powerbook is on, I hear this crackling/beeping sound through my sound output (same through headphones as well). It just started acting up a couple days ago and hasn't stopped. It's rather annoying when I am trying to listen to music or even if no sound is coming through at all.
I don't know if you have recognised this, but if you are in a car or near some type of radio and a mobile phone is being used near it, the radio usually emits a little static-beeping sound because of the interference it is receiving from the telephone waves. That's the sound I am getting from my laptop. This has never happened before.
Is this a sound card malfunction that can be fixed by resetting it or removing and reinserting? Is there anything I can do? Maybe run some sound tests, I dunno. How?
    Thanks.

Hi, ljosh. If anyone who had seen your post knew exactly what to do, I doubt that they'd be keeping it a secret from you. I don't know what to do about your problem, but I can tell you that there's no sound card in a Powerbook for you to fiddle with: the audio circuitry is all on the main logic board. There's no room in there for a separate sound card.
All I can suggest is that you start up from a bootable CD and see whether the crackling continues when none of the software (including the OS) on your hard drive is in use. If it does, your Powerbook needs a hardware repair.

  • No sound through speakers X-Fi Fatal

Hi just got my shiny new fatalty kit yesterday. I installed it last night selecting minimum installation (recommended for gaming). im not getting any sound through my speakers but i plug my heaphones into the fatalty front bay and i get sound through them. I have just installed the web update drivers but still no sound. I have tried all the jack plugs in the card but still nothing.
So please if anyone has any advice i would be very grateful.
Oh and i have disabled my motherboard sound device (AC97)
    Many thanks

Ok the speakers im using are 2 2. speakers with sub woofer and i had the setting on 2/2. . After a bit of playing around i have found that i can hear music/sounds when i select any of the other settings such as 4.,5.,6.,7. but i hear nothing when i select the correct setting of 2/2.
Please can someone get back to me and let me know cause this is mashing my brain.
My 2 speakers run through my subwoofer and the woofer is them plugged into the speaker jack on the rear of the sound card.

  • No sound through speakers or headphones in 3rd Gen iPod touch

Sound worked perfectly on the iPod until it was plugged into a speaker set through the headphone jack. Ever since then the ipod gets really warm and whenever a sound should be heard, there's a faint sound kind of like white noise. When you try to play something through the music app, the play button changes to a pause button and you hear the white noise, but the scrubbing bar doesn't change position, then the pause button changes back to play after a few seconds. The iPod is also slow in every app now, and it gets really warm at the bottom when it's charging or when it's being used. The iPod is no longer under warrenty and I've tried restarting, soft and hard resets, and restoring but nothing has changed. Is there anything else I can do? Or does anyone know if this is a common problem with this iPod?

If you restored to factory defaults/new iPod that indicates a hardware problem. I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and hear what they have to say. It is free.

  • Sound through speakers & headphones with Mac Pro & Vista?

    Hi,
Not sure where to post this but here goes:
I have a current model Mac pro and a set of Harmon Kardon soundsticks plugged in. All is well in OS X but when in Vista i can't get sound just through the headphones? It comes through both the headphones & speakers at the same time.
How can i get round this?
    Thanks.

I am having the same issue. Did you ever find a resolution? Sound worked for me for about a month, then it just stopped working one day. I have tried driver un-installation/installation/updates with Winders XP and Vista, resetting PRAM, etc... nothing works.
Is there a good USB/Firewire sound device that would work for the MacPro running Winders?
    Thanks,
    B

  • No sound through speakers in Windows 8

Yes I am aware that there are threads with this questions and none of them have any solutions apart from
reinstalling drivers, reformat the HDD, reinstall the OS blah blah.
My laptop model is E420 and none of the above work, the Lenovo drivers are all out of date, buggy pieces of crap for Windows 8 PREVIEW not 8 or 8.1 or anything.
There are also a whole host of problems mostly buggy drivers.
So here's what I have done so far:
    1. uninstall and reinstall the sound driver from Lenovo website - didn't work
    2. Repeated 1. - didn't work either
    3. Checked the sound control panel - the sound device is default and enabled
    4. Checked the device manager - sound device is working correctly
    5. Reformatted my computer - completely empty, no drivers or anything - let windows do everything; still no sound
    6. Installed the driver from Lenovo - didn't work, repeated 1. - still didn't work
    7. Updated the BIOS - didn't work.
    8. Uninstalled the driver and let windows update try and fix it - didn't work.(probably just found the same driver)
    9. Wiggled and rattled the audio jack to check if the switch inside was stuck - didn't work, the audio jack was fine
    10. Unplugged everything from the laptop and rebooted (no USB devices, projectors, only power and LAN) - didn't work
I think I have tried every option I have and still can't get the sound to work. I have a work around but it is very annoying to do:
    - Unplug everything (USB, HDMI, VGA)
    - Pull out the AC power
    - Take out the battery
    - press and hold the power button for 30 sec or so
Then put everything back and tada! I got sound!
What annoys me is that everything was working in Windows 7 but not 8
So what is this? Windows 8 problem? Or is it driver issues? Hardware issues?!?!
This laptop isn't ancient, the hardware inside is good enough for an ultrabook!
Any advice? I don't what to have to do the work around everytime I want to have the sound working.
PS - Any Lenovo software engineers out there please update your drivers, they are woefully outdated

I just bought a carbon X1 laptop i cant believe I'm having issues with it already, I use skype for work and i'm in sales need to make 100 sales calls a day, and the last 3 days i'm having nightmares about this laptop.
Everytime i try to make a call it says "failed to play test sound error" i try to open up youtube and nothing seems to have sound. I reboot the sound comes back on the laptop for about one hr. It goes again.
Has anyone at all gone through the same thing and does anyone have any solutions. Really urgent
    thanks

I have a lenovo u310 ideapad touch and had lots of sound issues after updating to 8.1. When trying to test sound i kept getting the "failed to play test sound error". I would uninstall and reinstall and nothing.
Solution for me: So i went into control panel/sound. Double click on sound, and then go to the recording tab "the second tab from left". If there is nothing showing in the window, that means that all devices are disabled. Right click inside that window and choose to show disabled devices. Then enable the stereo mix, which is the default device.
That worked for me. I had tons of issues and was fed up of having no sound watching things on my ideapad.
Let me know if it worked for you!!!

  • No sound through speakers

Okay, so I'm getting sound when I'm using headphones but when they're out the red light inside the headphone jack lights up and sound doesn't come through. When I press any of the volume buttons on the keyboard a little white ø is displayed underneath the volume status bar, and I'm unable to adjust the volume anywhere in the system. I've checked the sound app in the pref pane and nothing's muted. Perhaps I'm just missing something really easy (which I assume is the case), but I haven't been able to pinpoint it yet. Any ideas? Thanks...

This is a well known and well documented problem. There is a "micro-switch" in the TOP of the headphone jack. Use a toothpick, wooden match, q-tip stripped of cotton, or even better, the plastic refill tube to a CHEAP (Bic type) ball point pen. Apply reasonable pressure(but not extreme, don't break the toothpick or match)to the top of the jack to free the stuck switch. I have had best luck tilting the "tool" upwards with pressure and then drawing it out. (Yes I've done several of these.)The problem can be recurring. You just have to work it. The red LED in the jack port will go out when you are successful. Apple will want big-$$ to replace the board. Not worth taking to them unless you absolutely can't get it fixed yourself. Patience. It takes several attempts but it works.

  • No sound through speakers after rebooting

2011 MacBook Pro running Mavericks.  While working I typically listen to music in iTunes via an external amp and speakers connected to the audio out port.  Twice recently I've had to restart the MacBook and both times when I hit play in iTunes following the restart there was no sound.  I tried restarting iTunes to no avail.  Removing and reinserting the audio cable miniplug from the MacBook audio out port is the only way I could get the sound to come back on.  Surely this isn't by design?
