IMac OS X won't load

Recently while running OS X the iMac began to run extremely slow. I tried restarting and the computer just froze on the grey apple screen. I had windows XP dual booted on the same hard drive and I was able to log onto that with no problems at all. As this exact same situation occurred to me 10 weeks ago I tried inserting the OS X install DVD and use disk utility to do a repair but the computer wouldn't detect the DVD on start up. This was really weird because if i loaded windows it detected the dvd with out a problem. I called apple and ordered replacement DVD's. Using these It detected the DVD (after ejecting and reinserting the DVD multiple times) and I was able to access disk utility, however it was unable to preform a repair. I then decided to erase the Mac partition and do a clean instal. This didn't work as I just kept getting the message "Mac os x cannot be installed on this computer" I then decided to completely erase the hard drive (which still contained a fully working and functional windows XP install). Tried multiple times to get the instal to work but it never went through. The hard drive format was GUID enabled. Now the iMac won't detect the DVD and I just get a grey folder with a question mark.  I contacted apple care earlier today before I got it to initially detect the DVD and they said bring it in and they can help me reinstall Mac os x but I feel like there has to be a bigger issue here. This is the second time is has happened in 10 weeks ( first time reformatting the HD and reinstalling os x fixed the problem) as a student this is extremely frustrating as it has managed to occur ring at the beginning of finals both times. Also there isn't an apple store any where near my campus so if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this from home it would be greatly appreciated!

Dont Bother with the hardware test if XP is ok. If you are going to run it make sure you choose extended test and loop it by pressing L before starting the test. Run it for 4 hours.
To rule out the DVD, run it in xp. it should have boot camp drivers.
Try burning in xp too to rule out the optical drive as the AHT Might not find errors.
I would check you have the correct discs, if they are good the partition may be damaged. If you haven't tried this already its worth a shot.
Restore the disk to 1 partition . This will erase everything including XP.
Boot to DVD > Disk utility > Partition TAB > Change current to 1 Partition, make sure its MAc osx extended journaled then click apply

  • IMac 24" Applications Won't Load...

I have an Intel iMac 24" running 10.6.2 which I bought just before the new models launched. When I boot up the computer everything is just fine, all the apps load and work as they should however as I work throughout the day suddenly apps will just refuse to load. Anything from iTunes to Toast and even I'll problems with Safari.
It almost seems that if I boot up these apps when I start the Mac it might well be fine it's just if I want to start the app later in the day after the computer has been running for some time. Web pages will load in Safari but later on there will be issues with video and Flash sites. The only solution I can see is to force quit then restart the computer and choose the offending app as soon as it boots into the Finder. It's really frustrating if I want to burn a CD in Toast and it won't load and then I have to reboot to get the job done. All the Adobe CS4 apps seem to function fine although I have them set to Open at Login.
I thought I would make a new user and see if that would fix it but the System Preferences app hung when I tried and I had to force quit, I've not tried yet on restart, it might just solve it.
I'm sure others must have had this problem and I'm sorry if I am duplicating a post but I had a look and couldn't find a solution. I have Repaired Permissions and updated to 10.6.2 with the Combo Updater with no joy, it's looking like a reinstall of the OS might be the only resolve. I am using the pre-installed OS and I thought I read somewhere that could have been a problem for some owners.
    Please help.
    David

Good idea to create a new admin user account to see if the problem recurs there. If it does not, there is something in your normal account that is conflicting. You might open System Preferences Account pane +Login Items+ tab, to check the list of processes that start up automatically at login. If there is anything there you no longer need or that looks suspicious, take it off the list, restart, and see if the problem still recurs. About the only item that is on that list by default is iTunes Helper.

  • IMac 17 won't load discs

Hello. Just noticed a bug with my 2-year old iMac 17. It won't load DVDs or data CDs. It just makes noise and then spits them out. Music CDs work, however. Tried a few of the tricks suggested here on this board but to no avail. I don't use the drive a lot and just noticed it. The only significant change to my machine is I upgraded Mac OS to 10.5.7. Not sure if it could be related. Any ideas?

  • Adobe Reader won't load on my iMac.

I can't get Reader to open on my my iMac. I am using system 10.5.8, and every time I download what I think is a newer version of Reader, I get a tiny splash screen that says, “an internal error has occurred.” What version of  Reader should I be using?

Hi,  and thanks for your very prompt reply to my cry for help.
Yes,  I have used Reader for ages. But about the last couple of upgrades
have proven totally unopenable on my Mac.
I get the error message when Reader is trying to open. After I dismiss the
error message, I then get the message that Reader has unaccountably quit.
How do I go about using repair disk utility?

Has Reader ever worked on your machine? You can run the newest version which
    is 9.3.
At what point do you get the error? During the download, the install or when
you try and open it after installing it?
Have you ran the repair disk utility?

  • My iMac won't load email email until after I have been on it 10 minutes or more.  The carrier says it is not them it it my computer.  Help please.

My iMac computer won't load my email from the local carrier until I have been on the computer at least 10 minutes.  They say it is not them.  It is Apple.  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

First of all, rule out a network problem:
Run a speed test via Safari. You can use http://www.speedtest.net
In order for your emails to load within a few seconds, you'll need an internet connection of 1MB p/s or faster. Anything slower than that may cause the connection to the email server to time out.
If your connection checks out, try setting up your email address in a new user account. Sign out, and then sign into Guest. Set up your email there. If it's still slow, then you'll need to test on another computer.
Testing on a Phone or Tablet won't give accurate results, as they use different methods of accessing your email server.
If after tesitng on another computer, the connection is slow, make a back up of your emails and as your provider to clear your inbox on the server end. This will remove emails from your inbox if it's an IMAP account, or they won't be downloadable if it's a POP account.
After they've confirmed that's been done, try sending yourself a test email. Monitor the reaction time.
If all else fails, yell at your ISP

  • IMac makes a loud beep on start up, won't load past the blue screen and the black ticking dial appears every few seconds in centre of screen.

    Urgent help!
Out of the blue my mac lost the mouse cursor even though it had connection so I rebooted only for the mac to make a loud beep on start up then get stuck at the blue loading screen. It won't load past the blue screen. I've tried to reboot holding down the shift key but no change. I've also shut down, unplugged the main for 15 seconds, re plug and wait 5 seconds before starting up again but no change. Does anyone have any suggestions?
PS: I'm not too sure which systems I am running without being able to check in about this mac. I bought my imac in January or February 2011 if that helps.

The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

  • Imac G3 Won't Load Login Screen

I have an Imac G3 with 10.3.9 and it won't load the login screen. It all happened when one day I opened Microsoft Word and it froze. I then rebooted and it boots until it says login window starting and it just sits there. Is there a way I can get it to boot without having to reinstall the Os. I have also tried safe boot, but it will try to load then it will restart itself.

"Keys out of order" is some serious directory damage that can only be repaired by the following, if it isn't too far gone.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
If you have a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install will also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Cheers! DALE
    p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.

  • IMac won't load some web pages

I just got wireless internet out on my farm and hooked up my fairly new IMac G5 to it. When I connect it directly to the antennae (not through a router) everything works great. When I hook it through a router ( I have used linksys wireless g and a netgear wgr613 v6) the Imac will only load certain web pages. e.g. It will load Apple.com, but won't play the Macworld keynote address. It won't load Ebay at all. It will load cnn.com and others just fine. When I bypass the router, everything loads and works. I have also taken the IMac to work and hooked up to our office ethernet through a router, multiple wireless access points, and hubs, and the IMac works great all of the time. I tried the linksys first and it works for a little while and then fizzles away to nothing working. I then upgraded firmware and it worked a little while longer before dying. The netgear works all of the time for some, but not everything. When I hookup my Windows XP notebook, it works all of the time on either router. I have tried both routers either wireless, or wired, with the same results. Thanks....

Yes, that did it. I put in the two DNS numbers for my ISP and that solved the problem. Still don't understand why that caused it, but yet worked sometimes. Oh well.....Thank you

  • Yahoo/Flickr just WON'T LOAD on my iMac. Help!

    Hey folks,
I'm the very proud owner of a new iMac. But I'm just getting my bookmarks sorted etc using Firefox - my Yahoo mail just won't load up. In fact, the site keeps crashing and half loading. And when I did get through to the mail, the main panel was missing so I couldn't see any messages.
I have re-started, tried using Safari... nothing. I am really baffled and getting a little angry about this!
Every other website is loading perfectly. So as Flickr is connected, maybe it's a problem on their side, but I'm not sure.
    Anybody have any tips?

And, I used my housemate's PC - it worked fine on there.

  • Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar, etc. Malware?

    Specs:
    iMac 10.8.5
    3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, security software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar and are randomly corrupted, when I entered something in the Youtube searchbar (when it was still working) it send me to a site with sexadds.
I tried restart my iMac and when I was logged back in, my dock preferences were reset.
Also tried to download some security software to check my Mac for malware, but when I did, I tried several, I got a notification that said something like 'dumpfiles (don't know if this is the right translation...) damaged'.
I'm taking screenshots from all the weird notifications I get and even three quarters off the screenshots I took in the last three hours are already unreadable.
It started this morning when I tried opening a Premiere Pro file on which I worked the night before.
When I tried opening it, it said the file was damaged and could not be openend.
I tried opening it with AE or importing the file in a new project but nothing helped.
When I tried looking for autosaves, this is the really weird part, there were none.
Even though there are autosaves from my other projects, this one was completely gone.
It looked like the day before never happened on my computer.
Also when I openend Premiere all the recent projects had been wiped.
So at first I thought it was a Premiere Pro failure.
But than, later on the day, I tried loading some RAW files from my compact flash card.
This is where I would get an error (error -36) which said some data cannot be read or written.
I tried importing the files with a view different technics, from dragging to importing via Lightroom and I succeeded with Image Browser.
But when I tried moving the files to an other folder the same error occurred.
While dealing with this issue I wanted to put on some soothing music on youtube.
This is when the next weird thing occurred: youtube wasn't completely loading in Chrome. I refreshed a view times, checked the internet connection and still no difference.
When I tried in Safari it did work but when I clicked enter on the searchbar in Youtube, a page with sexadds appeared (I didn't install AdBlock in Safari...).
I read about this 'phishing' where you are redirected to a site were a possible malware installment can take place...
I don't know if it's connected to any of the problems I've been having but I just never experienced this on a mac, I have been a Mac user for 10 years now.
On top of it all, internet started working worse and worse and now it's not even working at all. I had to fill in the password over and over, normally it remembers.
Just like my system preferences, all the preferences I had with Chrome where also reset.
Also somewhere in between I got this notification: Mac OS X must restore library to run programs. Type your password to allow.
To me this is all very weird and suspicious. I have clearly no idea what's going on. Could this be another sort of trojan horse or malware?
Some background info which could be helpful for solving this mystery:
two months ago the one year old Fusion Drive in my iMac just broke out of nowhere.
I got it replaced by a qualified apple repair store.
When I got my computer back, all the files where gone.
I got on the internet without AdBlock installed yet.
A game or whatever it was, can't clearly remember, got installed by accident.
    I deleted it immediately.
Only two weeks later, I couldn't log in to my account. It didn't recognize my password and username.
So I brought my mac back to the store.
Here the repair guy said it was a minor thing and he just needed to reconnect my account. He also mentioned he found a downloaded game name Sparta and it probably had something to do with the error.
I asked him; could it be a virus? He replied no way.
I don't know why I couldn't be a virus, just because it's a mac doesn't mean it cannot be done.
So today I tried installing anti virus software (such as avast- was in a weird language looked like slovenian, clamxav - was in slovenian) but I couldn't install them.
PLEASE help me! I don't know what to do anymore, I work fulltime and I need my computer, I have no time to bring it in for repair, are there other perhaps easier ways?
Could this be the work of a virus or a malware? Or is it a disk permissions issue?

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Can't log in - desktop won't load

Hi, and thanks for reading this. I hope someone here can help me.
I have a G4 flat-panel iMac, running 10.2.8. Bought brand new in 2002 and have had no problems, with the exception of the hard drive going out a few months later and replaced under warranty. (Apparently a few of the dual-boot machines had this problem.) They also upgraded the OS to 10.2.8 and the computer has run beautifully ever since. Until the other night.
I was online and the modem disconnected but Internet Connect kept displaying "Disconnecting". This happens on occasion and the only way out of it is to shut down the computer and restart. So I did, and when the computer restarted I could not log in. The computer started as usual and seemed fine, the log-in screen appeared, I entered my password, the computer said "logging in", a blue screen appeared briefly... and then kicked back to the login screen. The desktop never appeared.
After several tries of that, I decided to reset my password (with the system CD). It let me reset my password and the computer recognized the fact I had changed my password. (You know how the log-in screen "shakes" to signal a wrong password - that never happened.) I tried to log in again and it said "logging in"... and returned to the log-in screen. The same thing happened when I tried the root user account.
I was able to start up from my Norton CD and changed the startup disk to 9.2. In 9.2, I can see the contents of my hard drive including my User folder in OS X and everything that had been on my desktop in OS X is right there in the "desktop" folder for my user name. I can move, copy, and delete things there. It's all there; the desktop just won't load when I start in OS X.
I don't know if it helps, but in 9.2, the computer recognizes my ZIP drive, CDs, and my Wacom tablet and mouse.
I have gone through the discussion boards and articles here and cannot find where anyone else has had the exact same problem. I have tried the possible solutions below, and none of them have changed anything:
    * Norton Utilities (Disk Doctor) - fixed some minor errors, then ran it again and no problems were found.
    * Safe Boot - I couldn't get the mouse to work, and when I figured out the keyboard "shortcuts" to log in, I got the same thing as before... "logging in" and then getting kicked back to the log-in screen.
    * Disk Utility (from the Mac OS X install CD) - it fixed a couple things then said that my hard drive appeared to be okay.
    * fsck (single-user mode) - it said that "Macintosh HD appears to be OK". So at least the hardware seems okay.
    * Rebuilding desktop - a long shot but I figured it was worth a try; nothing changed.
    * Reset privileges (single-user mode) - as far as I can see, nothing changed even after doing this.
    * Startup items (folder) - nothing seems out of place.
    * Disable log-in items - I still couldn't log in
    * In single-user mode: when trying one of the suggestions from an article here, I typed "cd/Users/{my user name}/Library, then mv Preferences Preferences_old, and received a message stating "no such file or directory."
Looking through the contents of my hard drive, I can see that there is a Desktop icon for OS 9, but not anything for OS X. In theory, shouldn't there also be a desktop icon for OS X? Has my computer somehow lost its "connection" or "map" to my OS X desktop? I ran fsck again today so that I could look at logs/parse failed/plist/etc (an article I found here on apple.com) and following those steps, I noticed there was a line that said "root device is mounted read-only." So I can only assume that has to do with the fact my OS X desktop doesn't load.
So, with all that being said (it's a lot, I know, and I hope it all makes sense) ... Is this problem something simple that I can fix myself, or do I need to take it into the shop and have a technician look at it? As you can imagine, this is all getting very frustrating, with limited access to an old version of Photoshop, SimpleText, and a very old web browser that only works on a few sites (and thankfully Apple.com is one of them). I miss my OS X.
Thanks again for reading this, and for any advice/assistance you may be able to provide.

Thanks, Anna. Excellent work. Everything seems fine, except, of course, the booting OS X part.
    First try Resetting the PRAM
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
    • Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
    • Release the keys and immediately and allow computer to boot.
The fact that you can boot in Safe Mode suggests that you may have a Login item that conflicts with the startup process. If resetting PRAM does not work try this:
    Boot computer in Safe Mode.
If you are able to get into the Login items (Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items) make a note of all the log in items (write it down). Then delete them all by selecting each one in turn and clicking the minus sign under the list. Shut down and try booting the computer normally. If you are able to boot successfully add the Login items on your list one by one and try rebooting each time you have added one. This should help you isolate the offending item.
I hope one of these methods works. Post back and let me know.

  • Websites won't load properly

    Hi
After just fixing my wifi problem (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1345209) I am able to access the internet but I have a problems loading pages from some websites. The browser will say that I have loaded the page fully, but none of the flash, javascript, or backgrounds will load. Some pictures, but not most of them would load. The page is a white background with text and links and a couple small pictures. The text is a default font and only the links are a color other than black. Most sites will work, but a few big one's won't.
    Some sites that won't work:
youtube.com (This wasn't working and then it worked for about three days and now it's not working again. It worked on all of the other computers in the house, mac or windows.)
facebook.com (This won't load on any of the mac computers in the house, but will work on our windows laptop.)
    flickr.com
    Sites that do work:
    Google.com
    apple.com
    pretty much anything else.
This problem persists on both Firefox and Safari. I have tried restarting the computer, deleting the preference (.plist) files for both browsers, checking my firewall settings, and nothing has worked.
Does someone know what is wrong?
    Cameron

I still haven't resolved this problem. Here is some more information...
youtube is the only website that has started working, but it sometimes stops working again.
There are many other sites that don't work, cnn.com, washingtonpost.com (sometimes), and a lot of others.
I have contacted our internet service provider and they said that they had nothing to do with the problem.
Some websites will not work at all. Safari tells me that it can't find the server. Some that do this are ups.com, computerworld.com, and others.
I think that the problem is that, for some reason, our mac computers can't access certain servers where we are. (We are at a small ski resort (on the mountain) in Canada.) I think this because when a site doesn't load properly there are several errors and they are all "can't find host" errors from a couple of the same sites (ex. example.something.something).
*Also, I ran a test on speedtest.net on the laptop and one of our iMacs and the results were way faster than anything actually loads/downloads or than the activity monitor shows, even when checking the activity monitor at the same time as running the test.

  • IPod Shuffle won't load on desk top

Bought shuffle for my 6 year son for his birthday (Bringing him up a as Mac Addict, start them young). I'm running 10.2.8, loaded software, but shuffle won't load on desktop. Any suggestions as he is dying to listen to chilli peppers on the go.

What sort of an iMac are you trying to plug it into? And where?
If it's G3 with that OS, then you can't use the low-power ones on the keyboard and you physically can't plug it in far enough to the high-power ones on the side of the case. You need to get a Shuffle Dock (neat, elegant, spendy solution) or a USB extention cable (cheap, easy, not so pretty one).
