Imac OS9.2.2 to OS10.4

I have slot loading iMac(vintage 2000 or thereabouts) OS 9.2.2 with 576MB of built in memory and would like to intall OS 10.4. I recently bought an eMac. Is it possible for me to install OS10.4 on my iMac from my eMac install discs? I tried and got a NO answer on my iMac. Just wondering if I am missing an update on the iMac or something else. Thanks.
iMac PowerPC G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

Hi, Michael -
You may have more than one issue at work -
• Firmware. Before installing OSX, or even trying to boot to it, make sure the firmware on your iMac is current. This Apple KBase article lists the current firmware versions for Mac models, and provides links to download any of those needed -
Article #86117 - Firmware Updates
• It is probable that the disks from the eMac are DVDs, and not CDs. If the optical drive in your iMac can not use DVDs (those models came with either a CD or a CD/DVD drive), then the eMac disks will not be usable.
• The original disks that come with a Mac are usually model-specific to that Mac, and will not work (satisfactorily, if at all) on a different model. In particular, such disks may not have the proper software to address different hardware on a model other than the one they came with.
You should probably make sure your firmware is up to date, then acquire the retail package for OSX 10.4.x (Tiger). If your optical drive is not DVD-capable, you can exchange the DVDs in the Tiger package for a set of CDs for a nominal fee. There is a link to arrange that in the upper part of this page -
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html
Edit - -
One other item of concern - hard drive space.
Drives tend to become flakey when they get more than about 85% full.
OSX will require at least 3GB of drive space, and needs about 5GB free space in addition to that for use as swap space, VM, and other things.
If you do not have 8GB or so free space on the drive, without encroaching into the 15% reserve buffer, you might consider replacing that drive with a larger one.

  • How can I transfer photos from my Imac OS9 to a Macbook Pro OS 10 ? 10

How can I transfer photos from my Imac OS9 to a Macbook Pro OS 10 ?

The easiest way is probably to use a USB flash drive (you may have to test whether it is compatible with the Mac OS 9 iMac).
Somewhat more complicated would be to connect the two computers via Ethernet to (the built-in switch of) a broadband router, and then transfer files over the Internet (or a local network).
There are other methods as well (FireWire, CD-R, et cetera), depending upon the exact computer models involved.

  • IMac OS9 to OS10.3.5

I have the disk to do this. I just purchased the iMac today, and the people I got it from were trying to delete personal files and it looks like they pretty much deleted part of the 9.2.2 operating system, the other thing is it logs on as a guest and when I try to upgrade it, it tells me I do not have enough access privileges. I have tried logging of so I can log in as something else.. but it hasnt worked. Any suggestions?

    Hi, senaloyd -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Assuming the problem is with booting to OS 9 -
Boot the machine to a CD - an OS 9 Install CD is best, but any will do. Note - if you do not know for sure whether the machine has had its firmware updated to the current version for that model, do not use a CD which boots to OSX.
Once you are booted to the CD, go into the Preferences folder in the System Folder on the hard drive; locate the file Multi-User Prefs. Throw that file away and empty the Trash. Then do a normal restart.

  • Problem updating imac OS9.2 to OSX 10.3

    Hi Everyone,
this is probably old hat, but I can't seem to find the info on the net anywhere so hopefully a know-it-all will stumble across my q.
I have OS9.2 running on an iMac DV(graphite) 500Mhz (I got it about 12mths before OSX came out but never updated). I need to update coz I just can't get software for OS9 anymore. OK, so I updated my firmware to 4.1.2(?), tried to open the installer in OS9 - couldn't open it - so i restarted and held 'c'. Window pops up saying preparing for install of OSX. Asks what language, whirs away then says something along the lines of 'can't install' then quickly flicks to a blue screen with a little clock logo which spins for hrs with nothing happening. Any ideas. Thanks a million.

  • Missing menu items, iMac OS9 anyone?

I have an old 333MHz iMac, I just installed OS9.2.1 on it but there are some strange problems:
1# There are some missing menu items, like 'Restart', 'Select all' and 'Get info', the keyboard shorcuts don't work for these either.
2# There is a modem in the computer but this does not show up under the 'Apple System Profiler'.
I have reset the PRAM and the System seemed to install OK. All extensions are on.
    Anyone any ideas?
    G4 DP 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hi, Mike -
    You're quite welcome.
When you open the Modem control panel and attempt to connect to the modem, do you get any message indicating the port is already in use? If so, it is probably AppleTalk interfereing - it can do that even if AppleTalk has been turned off. To fix that, in the AppleTalk control panel reset AppleTalk to use a different port - if you need it for the printer, select that; otherwise, select an unused port such as Remote or Ethernet.
It may also help to trash the file ASLM Preferences and restart.

  • Network Imac OS9 to G4 OS X

Can anybody tell me how to network my two macs. 1st mac G4 Da running OSX 10.4.8. 2nd mac iMac G3 running OS9.2. I need the iMac to print to a Iris printer through the G4, as the G4 has the scsi connection for the printer. Or does anyone know how Ican connect the iMac directly to the scsi port of the Iris?

    I
need the iMac to print to a Iris printer through the
G4, as the G4 has the scsi connection for the
    printer.
There is nothing built into OS X to make that
    possible.
OS X's printer sharing is NOT
compatible with OS 9's printer sharing therefore the
iMac running OS 9 will not be able to use the printer
    connected to the G4.
    Does OS X's printer
    sharing support printers connected via
    SCSI?
    Or
does anyone know how Ican connect the iMac directly
to the scsi port of the Iris?
Not directly. I don't know of any, but there may be a
USB/SCSI adapter. In order for it to work, it would
need the appropriate OS 9 drivers.
Thanks Duane, at the moment every time I need to use the Iris I have to reboot the G4 in OS9. So I am looking for any way to get the Imac to talk to the iris printer, either directly (preferred) via some sort of connection to the printers scsi port or by networking through the G4. The latter as you said is not possible.

  • Internet on my imac os9

I would like to basicly take the the wifi that my macbook osx is getting and share it with my os9 imac via a ether net cable basicly making my macbook a wifi card for my imac

Hook them up and turn on Internet sharing from the Sharing pane of System Preferences on the MacBook. You may also need to make changes to the firewall in the Security pane.

  • Reinstalling OS9 in G4 with OS10

Friends, I have a G4 that I bought to run a couple of pro photo scanners. One runs on OS9 and the other on OS10. The CPU which I bought used came with OS 9 installed (no disc). I got the OS 10 from a buddy. We installed OS 10, and in the process, apparently wiped out the OS 9. So I bought the original installation disc (the one that can run from boot) and want to reinstall OS 9 without wiping out the OS 10 in the process, or all the apps that are already loaded. A little help? Thanks much. D1

Deliberate1, welcome to the Apple user-to-user forums!
Exactly which G4 you have makes a huge difference here. The later ones could not boot from a commercial OS 9 CD at all.
What model Mac? What CPU speed?
We installed OS 10, and in the process, apparently wiped out the OS 9.
How did you decide that? have you tried firing up System Preferences > Classic and using it to search for the OS 9 files?

  • Safari Download Available for IMAC OS9.0.x?

I have an older version of Internet Explorer. When attempting to download a new version of the Browser, it referred me to Safari as of Jan 06. Is Safari download available for my IMAC 0S 9.0.4?

    Hello iMac Lady,
No, I'm afraid the earliest version of Safari was only available for OS 10.2.x.
This macslash article mentions a few alternatives that are available for OS9 however:

  • DVD burner for iMac - OS9.2

I have been looking all over the Internet, and local computer stores trying to find an external DVD burner the will work with my iMac, 350Mhz, Power PC with OS 9.2. I can't find one anywhere. all of the new ones are for OS X. My model iMac does not have firewall
Can anyone give me a way to find one?

...find an external DVD burner the will work with my iMac, 350Mhz, Power PC with OS 9.2.
I doubt that you will have any luck. Your iMac has USB 1 which will make DVD burning extremely slow. Since your iMac has a G3 processor, making video DVDs will be agonizingly slow and you will have to use Toast or some other 3rd party tool to do it. You should be able to use one to make data DVDs but it will be slow.
My model iMac does not have firewall
    You mean Firewire not firewall.

  • Cannot connect to iMac (OS9) via ethernet while connected to internet

I readily connect my eMac (OS X) to my iMac (OS 9) via ethernet using TCP/IP except when my internal modem is connected to the internet. In Network Port Configurations, I have ethernet at the top of the list, followed by fire wire and then the modem. It appears to search the internet.
    Any suggestions?

On the iMac, the AppleTalk Control Panel (CP) is set to connect via ethernet. The TCP/IP CP is set to connect via Ethernet, Configure manually with an IP and Router address of 192.168.168.1 and a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 The IP address shows up in the File Sharing CP which is set to use TCP/IP.
On the eMac, PPPoE is disabled and Appletalk is active. Connecting from eMac to iMac works fine when the eMac's internal modem is idle but not when it is connected to the internet.
When I try to connect from iMac to eMac while eMac is connected to internet, I see the eMac in the Chooser and can attempt to connect as either registered user or guest but then immediately get "The connection to this server has been unexpectedly broken". If the eMac is not connected to the internet, I can connect as a guest and see items in my Public folder.
I tried creating a new Location and immediately lost my internet connection.
The IP address of the iMac never changes. I do enter the IP address of the eMac's ethernet into the chooser dialogue on the iMac when attempting to connect from iMac.

  • G4 OS9.2 to OS10.4

    Can you upgrade a G4, it's an OS9.2,to an OS10?

    HI, Madry -
If you know for sure that you have no use for OS 9, yes, you can remove it.
It's easy to do so - just drag the folder named System Folder to the Trash. There are also two standard folders used by OS 9 which you may wish to trash - these are named Documents and Applications (Mac OS 9). Be certain you do not need anythig in those folders before disposing of them.
The preceding presupposes that your machine also has OSX on it, and that you just wish to get rid of OS 9 and its related things.
If your machine has just OS 9 on it, and you want to install OSX, and need nothing at all that is currently on the hard drive, then you can simply erase the hard drive. You can do that while booted to your OSX Install disk - use the utility named Disk Utility to do that.
Suggestion - although you may feel that you will have no need for OS 9, it is a good idea when reformatting (erasing and initializing) a hard drive on a machine such as yours to select the option to install OS 9 drivers on the hard drive, just in case. If those are not installed, then OS 9 can not be installed on the hard drive at a later date.

  • FileMakerPro shut/slow down on G5/Tiger network with G3 server OS9

We have recently upgraded (insurance co. mandated) our medical office from a happily running system to one that's driving us insane. We were running 6 older iMacs, OS9.2 with a G3 server running OS9.2.1 over a TCP/IP network. Our office software is a FilemakerPro based system uses FMPServer on the server. We now have workstations iMac 1.8 GH G5s running OS10.4. Software company told us we could continue using the G3 server running OS9.2.1 with the upgraded Filemaker Pro software. (Same network) They had recommended that we not go to dual core Intel due to incompatibilities they knew existed. Since the install we have had numerous problems with sudden drastic slowdowns that can only be fixed by a reboot of everyone on the network and the server. Also individual computers get thrown out of the software with "the application FileMakerPro quit unexpectedly" message. This can occur during work or while sitting idle. Software co. suggested upgrade of software to 10.4.6 to the G5's, (they do not recommend .7 or .8) to stop problem. Have verified permissions-nothing much there. Upgraded one workstation to 10.4.6 with no difference in performance. Am questioning that the system software on the server needs to come up to OS10.4 even though they have told me no. Would have to buy CD's for the G3. We're looking for any suggestions before all employees quit.

Hey Bee-Had to pack it in last night-too many hours at the office this week. Thanks for looking at this. When I did the verify on each of the workstations very little came up-I apologize for not remembering message at this point but maybe only two or three lines on each of the G5's-same message on each with statement "verified and repaired" at the end. I don't remember if I ran permissions on the server. My employee Kevin-the best-may have done it. He's a PC user but trying very hard to help on this. I'm giving him one of the old red imacs to take home-maybe convert him. It occurs to me that since the software company did the data transfer, it's possible that an AFP connection may be hanging around on something. Not quite sure how to track that down. Thank goodness I spent time on the forum-I was going to try intalling Tiger on the G3 server this weekend-would have slowed us down to a crawl. Am heading over there soon after Acme delivers groceries-Acme online has changed my life. Have to install new version of Timbuktu so they can get in to fix some other problems-so many glitches. Had Timbuktu on the server-buuutt-after Verizon guy put DSL connect on server, workstations would not see the server-disabled internet connect on the server-then they see it. So in order for network to function, have to keep the server off the DSL ine for now and load Timbuktu on a G5. Someone suggested a faster drive-my Dad-Mac guy since the beginning-thinks that would be useful.By the way we have two drives for the server and copy back and forth in case one goes down. Patient data base has over 9000 patients plus insurances/providers/billing going back to '98. We do our own billing. I know TMI but I'm trying to knock these problems down one at a time. We are being mandated-both federal and insurance company to go all electronic for referrals, claims submissions, etc. Next immediate need is to get data out for an e-prescribing pilot program-husband is one of 150 BC of DE docs to RX from a loaded PDA. Sorry for the length-Yikes DEW

  • Last ditch attempt to save art on imac dv se

    Hi there
I someone can help me solve a problem
I have an imac dv se (snow) "running" (crawling) OS9.
The internal CD drive still reads discs (just about) but is mechanically out of order and can't eject. ( i more or less have to take the machine apart to get a disc in or out. My external CD drive is also a goner - it was Iomega Hotburn and never worked well anyway but the data input port or whatever it's called - where you plug in the cable from the computer - is broken.
I have loads and loads of precious artwork and family photos on the machine which I want to save. I think the machine needs zeroing and then re-initializing with 0s10 as it is generally cronky all round. But I don't want to lose my work. In fact I desperately don't want to lose my work - it's actually more important to me than the machine. I can't afford a new mac and living on an island in Greece means there's no chance of getting a second hand one. What I really want is all these files on CD, preferably in a form that I can read on my Windows pc with a view to buying anew mac in the future or perhaps rescuing this one.
So, first question, can you recommend a cd burner that will work comfortably with this poor old machine as I think i am right in saying i will need to get everything off the machine in order to get it to a nice os 10 state where i can easily buy compatible thingies for it. Unless you think I can get away with partitioning it (I am talking thru my backside here - i haven't a clue what that involves, i've just heard of it and wonder if it is a solution which would then mean that I could install os 10, buy something straightforward and contemporary to deal with cd burning and gradually bring the pics over from the os9 side to the os10 side and pull them off that way.)
Bearing in mind that the machine is possibly in a fragile state anyway and crashes a lot (I can't get it online in its present state either btw or i'd sit up for days on end emailing the files from the machine to another location)
I've also considered an external hard drive purchase as a place of safety whilst i upgrade. Funds are limited.
    What do you think?
I do hope this pathetic attempt at describing the problem is comprehensible. I would like to save the imac which I loved dearly in its day as well as the pics and maybe it is possible. After the iomega hotburn debacle i am very nervous about making any purchase though.
    Any help appreciated,
    Kind regards
    Gina

Well, the stuff I need to know like the reverse workingness etc is probably so obvious to yer more proficient mac users they wouldn't even think to tell me!
I did think of one thing re another post. I had a lot of trouble for ages with Disk First Aid and de=fragging and so on because for ages the date on the machine was wrong = it had reset to 1904. It was only when I reset that that things get going. It still resets back there ( I think the internal battery might be the problem) but now I take care to set it correctly for the session before I try to do anything much. I think it's a problem common to imacs when they are getting on in years a bit. I've tipped off a few friends because you can see from their emails that their date is out. It's ok at first it's just over time things start going wrong.
Some of my problems are also to do with the local power supply being a bit lame so I have to make sure I've got a dedicated power supply or it gets very unhappy. The monitor display starts resizing itself and so on. Very alarming. In another sense it's amazing the computer has survived the life it's led to be honest. It's been moved from the UK to Greece and survived loads of bad power outages (one lost all my music) and it's taken ages to separate out the various problems to the point where I can start formulating a rescue plan. I have a feeling it will survive though I know my next set of questions once I get the stuff off is whether going all the way to OSx is the best thing. I think I've read somewhere that you have to go up from 9.0 via another upgrade.
Am not looking forward to all of that. It gives me a big headache and takes a lot of time. At least now I don't have to contemplate articide which was a bit depressing to say the least. If I can upgrade it I might even be able to get it to talk to my printer again.
Anyway, thanks a lot. Will get myself a flash thing next time I get paid.
    Bye now (late here!)
