IMac Parallels and printing

I have an iMac Intel and installed Parallels. The printer works in OS but Windows XP does not see the printer. Plug and play does not seem to be suppported. I tried using the printer CD to install the drivers and got a message to connect the machine and wait for it to be recognized.
Any suggestions
Thank you in advance
Mark

I don't have any help for you (sorry) except to say that I haven't had any problem with Parallels and Windows 2000 with my HP 2600n. It worked perfectly from the start.

  • IMac, Parallels and XP

I will be ordering an iMac (20", 2.4) in the next few weeks with parallels and XP preinstalled. Since I'm completely new to the Mac system, I have a few simple-minded questions. For instance, when running in XP, I understand that the computer will be as susceptible to malware as any Windows computer. But will the mere presence of XP make the computer as a whole susceptible. I'm guessing that when I'm running in OS-X (10.5) (which will be most of the time) I'll be OK.

running in XP, I understand that the computer will be as susceptible to malware as any Windows computer.
You can turn off access to the internet for the windows OS. This would reduce your vulnerability. Parallels has the ability to make a snapshot of your windows OS. You can revert to this snapshot at any time. Thus, if you get some malware, you can you back to your last snapshot thus ditching the malware.
But will the mere presence of XP make the computer as a whole susceptible.
No, but with this caveat... With parallels, you can share Mac OS folders with Windows xp. Files in these shared folders will be accessible to windows malware.

  • IMac Program and Printer Difficulties

I have an iMac G4, here are some details: iMac
    Machine Model: PowerMac4,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 700 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.3.5f1
Recently I got an Epson V200 scanner for it, and that worked fine, but there are
some problems with the Epson Stylus Photo R380 printer I got for it.
When I installed it, I was not able to add it to the list of printers, or
whatever the Chooser is called in OSX. I called Epson's tech support. They had
me trash and reinstall the driver, restart, and do a delete and re-add, and that didn't work. Then they had me do a Repair Disk Permission, and trash and reinstall the printer. That worked, but only for printing from Apple Mail. I still can't print from the internet, I immediately get an error message. The same thing happens in Illustrator 10, when I try to print I get a program error message. Photoshop 7, Photoshop Elements 4, and iPhoto are all messed up now. They won't even open a new file, or most existing files. When they do open a file, and I try to print it, I immediately get a program error message. Any help anyone could give me would be much appreciated. Someone suggested trashing the Preferences folder in Photoshop and the other programs, but I thought I would ask on here first. Thanks.

One other thing, before any of this happened, it was giving me a hard time about installing Dreamweaver MX into OS 10.4.11, when I tried to enter the serial number.
It did, however, allow me to install Dreamweaver 4 on OS 9. The OS 9 applications seem to be working fine.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:

    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)

Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

  • Just installed drivers for Canon mp258 but can't locate them on my imac G5 and cant print??

I have spent 2 days downloading every Canon mp258 driver I can find for mac as I am unable to find any sign of the drivers on my imac. The printer should appear in system preferences, printer & fax but it is not there! Have read all the literature from Canon and there should not be a problem using this printer with OS 10.6.8?? What am I doing wrong?
    Any ideas??
    Cheers sarah

Adding Canon printers can be a little strange at times.  You mentioned you were trying to add the printer on a Mac G5 system?  What OS is it running?  Your profile says you have an iMac with Mac OS 10.6.8 - this is confusing since 10.6.x cannot run on PPC machines.  Do you mean 10.5.8?

  • I have an iMac which I had loaded Parallels and Windows 7.  I recently uninstalled both programs. How can I delete all related files?  Is there a program that will find related files and delete them?

I have an iMac on which I had installed Parallels and Windows 7 so I could some of the creativity software I was used to. I recently uninstalled both Parallels and Windows. How can I clean up my hard drive by making sure stray files from those programs have all been deleted?

If you followed these steps to uninstall Parallels (you simply drag Parallels to the Trash), that's all. Parallels is a quite clean application that does not create a lot of files in different folders.
However, you may still have the virtual machines you created in Documents folder. If you want to remove them, open a Finder window, select Documents in the sidebar and remove the Parallels folder

iOS devices use AirPrint to connect to a supported printer. OS X will use Bonjour to locate and connect to the same printer.
With the Epson connected to your wireless router, when you open Print & Scan and click the plus button to add, does the Epson appear in a small box with a heading of Nearby Printers?
If not and a window appears showing Default, Fax, IP and Windows in the toolbar, do you see the Epson with the Default view selected?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Considering FileVault usage on an iMac with OSX 10.6.7. Wanting to know more about strengths and weaknesses of Filevault with Time Machine, Parallels and Carbon Copy Cloner. Any negatives to consider before flipping the switch?

I'm considering FileVault usage on an iMac with OSX 10.6.7. Wanting to know more about strengths and weaknesses of Filevault with Time Machine, Parallels and Carbon Copy Cloner. Any negatives to consider before flipping the switch? Any information ?
    Would specifically like to know:
Filevault impact on performance and application usability.
TIme machine impacts, and whether TIme Machine volume will also be secure?
Will a Cloned copy made with CCC be  bootable, or usable?
Any other negatives to consider before turning this thing on?
    Thanks,

Filevault impact on performance and application usability.
FileVault encrypts the user's home directory only - it is basically an encrypted disk image that is automatically opened when you log in and closed when you log out. It does cause disk accesses to be a bit slower so it isn't a good idea to use an encrypted account with sound or video or large graphics files. I have no experience with it with Parallels Desktop but suspect that you'd notice a bit of a slowdown. Note: in the User's directory you'll see a Shared Folder. Since FV only encrypts the user's directory you can put data you don't need encrypted in this shared folder which won't be encrypted.
TIme machine impacts, and whether TIme Machine volume will also be secure?
There are issues with TM and FV but how extensive they are with Snow Leopard I can't say, once I realized that TM and FV hadn't substantially changed between 10.5 and 10.6 I stopped dealing with it. When FV and TM were first introduced my testing led me to recommend using CCC or SuperDuper! for backing up.
Will a Cloned copy made with CCC be  bootable, or usable?
    Yes
Any other negatives to consider before turning this thing on?
Since FV is nothing more than a disk image - and disk images can fail - there are several problems with FV in my opinion. If an encrypted disk image fails it isn't possible to access any of that data. If you don't have a recent (undamaged) backup of the disk image and/or recent backup of the data within the disk image you are in a world of hurt. This isn't just a warning of possibility - this is a real danger that I've seen all too often at the shop where I have worked part time for a number of years.
At this time I strongly recommend that people who have sensitive data keep that sensitive data segregated from their general data and encrypt only the sensitive data or use other methods of locking it down such as saving on an external drive that is kept in a safe. Call me paranoid but I don't even keep all my sensitive data in one encrypted disk image. I use multiple disk images and keep multiple sequential backups. That way I might someday find that my up-to-date investments disk image won't mount but (a) I can go back a week to a backup and (b) that won't impact my up-to-date business records because those are in a different disk image
