IMac Photo Booth freeze

Our new iMac is about two months old. In the past two weeks(?) Photo Booth has begun freezing the entire iMac. We open Photo Booth, and it comes up with the halo (?) effect. After a few seconds the image freezes and the entire iMac becomes unresponsive. The mouse moves but click doesn't work. The Dock won't respond. Hard reset has been our only solution.
Help?

What model iMac do you have?
Your post is in the area for G3 CRT models. 'Sounds like you have a newer machine.
It's confusing.

  • PHOTO BOOTH FREEZES WHEN OPENING ANY OTHER APP

I am a fairly new Mac user after using Windows PCs for many decades so please bear with me on this. I purchased a new unibody MacBook Pro a few months ago and everything works as advertised except for one thing. If I am looking at myself in photo booth the video is fine. However, if I open any other application---browser, iwork, iphoto, anything----my picture on photo booth freezes. The picture unfreezes and returns to normal video as soon as I close the other application. I bought a MacBook Pro for my 14 year old last Summer and it has the same problem which leads me to believe there must be some tweak or some fairly obvious fix that I am overlooking. Because of this issue neither laptop can be used for video chat--just won't work. I would appreciate any suggestions that anyone might be able to offer. Both MacBook Pros are fully updated and both are 15" screens. If I change user accounts the same problem occurs. Spoke on the phone with one of the "geniuses" at the local Apple Store and he said he had never heard of this issue which seems strange since it occurs on both of our Macs---unlikely coincidence. Hope there is some "genius" on this forum that can save the day here. Thanks in advance for any assistance or advice.

I have solved my issue after several attempts and guidance from the Apple Community. I found a posting that that stated to reinstall OS X 10.8.2.
    1. I backup my mac to me Time Capsule.
    2. I reinstalled OS X 10.8.2
    3. I deleted from preference file "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" (Open "Finder". Click "Go" menu. Then press "Option" key. The "Go" menu will display "Library" which you should click. Then go to "Preferences" folder. The file you should delete is under that folder.)
    I then opened iPhoto.
Whala it opened with no issues at this point....
Happy camper now. Hopefully this may help others as I spent all weekend working on this fix.

  • Photo Booth freezing/crashing Mavericks OS. How can I fix this?

I downloaded Mavericks via Apple on November 5.  Before installing it I made sure my Mac system was totally functional: ran disk repairs, checked if I had installed apps that wouldn't run in Mavericks, etc. Everything went well during installation, and I was able to use my laptop for two days UP UNTIL I tried to use Photo Booth! I got a message that Photo Booth was gathering my images (presumably to move it to a new location based on new configuration of Mavericks), and there was also a progress bar. Suddenly I realized that the progress bar would not advance and that my MacBook Pro (mid 2007) had frozen. I restarted it, only to have it freeze upon startup.  I tried resetting the PRAM, and that only allowed me to make it to the desktop, but with no visible hard drive on my desktop, no dock at all, and I couldn't access any of the menus in the Finder window, not even to restart or shut down. Then I tried several options:
Hard reset and tried to boot in safe mode. NOTHING. It was just impossible to safe boot it. At times I'd get up to half of the progress bar and then it'd freeze. Hard reset Command + S
    Hard reset Command + V
Hard reset and reset the PRAM again, etc.
Eventually I'd  make it to the desktop, the dock would show up, also the files on my desktop, but it'd not take longer to freeze again. It was all very odd because there was always a point when it'll would just freeze.
Then I decided to try Command + R to repair disks. I Verified and repaired the discs. Then I restarted, and it froze. I decided to reinstall the OS through the Recovery mode screen. I did it. No success the problem persisted. I redid all this last steps again: Command + R, verify/repair disks, reinstall OS X. Once completed: MBP froze. The whole process was so time consuming that I gave up and just turned off my computer. The next day I was able to turn my computer on with success. Some of the folders that were open before the Photo Booth crash were on open. I closed everything and turned my MPB off using the Finder menu. Then I turned it on again, and once I got to the desktop and found no folders open, and I reopen Safari because I remember I was using it before opening Photo Booth. To my surprise it opened and all the pages I was visiting before the crash were there as if Safari resumed just how it was before the crash. I turned it all off again using the Finder menu. I was wondering if those Safari and the folders that were left open were for some reason conflicting with the system's start up. Then I turned it on again and this time I proceed to work with my computer but not before verifying/repairing the disks through the System Preferences menu.
Everything went well. Later that day I decided to open Photo Booth to see if it'd work smoothly. It didn't open very smoothly but I was able to play around with it for a while. I turned it off and everything was great. The system was a little slower than what I was used to but I guessed it's because Mavericks demands a more advanced hardware. Then the next day the problem restarted!!! I was able to get to my desktop normally and decided to open Photo Booth to complete the task I wanted it to use it on the day of the first freeze/crash. And it froze my computer and it all restarted. This time, even redoing all the steps and even after reinstalling the system 3 times, I still can't get my computer to work. But at least one thing I know: this problems is being caused by Photo Booth! I'm desperate and I don't want to format and do a clean install because I will lose some important files. Does any of you have ANY idea of what's going on and what can I do to fix this? It's unnerving to have it fixed once (not knowing how) and suddenly find myself dealing with the same problem again!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Photo booth freezes and closes

Every time i open photo booth it just freezes, it doesn't do nothing for 3-4 seconds. Then it force quits.
Is there any way to fix it? :/
The camera is responsive because it works with Skype and iChat.

Repair permissions & restart. If that does not work, then I suggest that you cross-post over in the iSight Forums where the Photo Booth users hang out.
Which OS version do you have? Your first post states 10.5.4 but, your second post shows 10.5.1!

  • HT1338 My iMac Photo Booth isn't working

I've had my iMac computer for maybe a month now so it's still brand new. My photo booth was working just fine until the other day. Now, every time I try to use it, it opens normally and i can see my other pictures and everything but it either just stays black or stays black and the loading wheel keeps going. the green light turns on though. PLEASE HELP i can't take any pictures. My iMovie has been doing this too.

  • Photo Booth Freezes aftr one pic

    Hi,
PB is giving me problems: I open it, it takes one picture, does nothing with the picture - can't find it anywhere, and I've done a finder search for them. The picture does not appear in the lower bar, and it says there are no photos. I cannot then take another picture and have to quit.
I also do not have the new backgrounds at all.
    Thanks for the helpt --
    Michael

You couldn't find the plist file because you probably spelled PhotoBooth incorrectly. Note the caps for the letters P & B. The file you are looking for: com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist

If I were in your shoes, I would call Apple before my 90 days of free phone tech support expired. You should not any issues with a 1 day old machine that you need to "troubleshoot' a pre-installed app.

  • Photo booth freezing after taking photos or videos...

so almost every time i use my iSight and photobooth to take a photo or record a video my mac freezes and i cant force quit or even click on anything. i end up having to manually shut down my mac and then reboot it. it still saves the photos/videos most of the time but its very obnoxious that it freezes after each time i try to take a photo, especially since i just got this MacBookPro a week ago.
has anyone experienced similar problems and know any solutions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, UnadmirableActs
so such problems can be caused by software issues you can fix.
Mac OS X is a robust operating system, but it does require some simple occasional maintenance for best performance. It sounds to me like your Mac may need some maintenance now.
First, you should Safe Boot your Mac. Safe Boot forces an automated OS X disk check and repair routine. If your disk needs significant work, Safe Boot may take several minutes to finish. Do NOT try to use your Mac while in Safe Mode. When your desktop appears in Safe Mode, immediately restart your Mac normally. Use the Safe Boot procedure the first time you start your OS X Mac after any hard shutdown (whenever you "manually shut down my mac".)
When your Mac restarts normally after a Safe Boot, you should repair your startup disk's permissions. Depending upon how much repair is needed, permissions repair may take many minutes or even a few hours the first time you do it. Subsequent runs should take only a few minutes.
For normal maintenance (other than after a hard shutdown,) you can also use Disk Utility rather than a Safe Boot to verify your startup disk.
As soon you have performed your OS X maintenance, try the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight to test your iSight's function. If you encounter problems after having performed OS X maintenance, try the reset process suggested in the Troubleshooting suggestions. The reset usually restores proper function of the built-in iSight.

  • Photo Booth crashes for one user, not another.

Just upgraded to Lion, 10.7.1. On a 2007 iMac, Photo Booth works fine with one user. But switch to another account and it crashes every time after asking to create a new photo library. Any suggestions?

From What I've found.. it seems 3ivx or Perian could cause this problem. A friend had this issue and deleted 3ivx and it fixed his crashes. Alternatively, some folks are reporting that turning off 32-bit mode (Get Info) for Photobooth has also fixed, although this was already turned off in my friend's case. Or if you have iGlasses installed.

  • Photo Booth Not Working

Hi there! OK. Seasoned user here, just can't quite figure this out... My Photo Booth application isn't working correctly. It is not saving the picture. After I take a picture (of myself, for example) it will freeze on the picture and not show the photo down below, its just blank. Then, I have to close the program. When I restart it the photo is not there... I tried trashing the plist file for Photo Booth to no avail. I tried restarting, repairing permissions, etc. Nothing works. I even tried reinstalling the "bundled apps" dvd and no go... Ok, can anyone help me with this? Am I going to have to reinstall Mac OS X? I would rather not since it's fully updated to 10.6.3 (and since I recently had to wipe everything out and start over already) someone please advise... Oh! Another tidbit.. I checked the Console log after Photo Booth freezes up and it keeps reporting this in Console:
"* -[NSCFArray initWithObjects:count:]: attempt to insert nil object at objects[0]"
    Help!

To all those having the same freezing issues in Photo Booth (not allowing you to save photos within program) Discussions user "maahs_k " has helped me. Here was his solution for another user that ultimately helped me! maybe it will help you too...
check your photo booth folder permissions
    macintosh hd/users/your_user/pictures/"photo booth"
I've had a number of the machines at my building have that folder's owner become blank or change to system.
once you have the folder selected in the finder go to
    File->"Get Info"
and if your user isn't listed as the owner with
    read & write
privileges then click the + to add your user and/or change your privilages then try to take a picture in photobooth.

  • Photo Booth is freezing after Maverick upgrade. Any help?

Photo Booth has been freezing since I upgraded to Maverick yesterday. On my MacBook Pro, it shut it down. On my iMac, it did the same thing. Once I did manage to get it up again on the iMac, I got a spinning ball in less than 30 seconds, and then it just crashed.
On the MacBook Pro Retina Display, it crashes immediately — and, even then, the screen in Photo Booth is completely blacked out.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Dragging and dropping to a web-based email (gmail) makes the photo appear inside the message itself, and not as an attachment, which is what I wanted.

  • Photo Booth / iSight freezes the whole machine

    I have purchased a new 20" iMac.
Photo Booth seems to work fine but, so far twice while it's on, the whole computer froze twice, under identical situation. (My daughter loves playing with it.)
It's a complete freeze but not kernel panic, and only power cycling brings the machine back. I tried to "ping" from other Mac but no response from the machine.
Is there anything I can do to avoid the freeze?
    Tai

    Hello Tai
Is there anything I can do to avoid the freeze?
Depending on the age of your daughter, you might want to be sure that your Mac is protected from her when you are not watching.
If you do not force your iMac to run all the time without letting it sleep overnight, you should perform regular Mac OS X Maintenance.
Even if you keep your Mac running overnight or manually perform OS X Maintenance, whenever you have to force-shutdown or force-restart your computer you should do a Safe Boot and then restart. Do so now if you have not done so already.
If the only problems you notice are with iSight, you can try the relevant suggestion for built-in iSight in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight. Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific". Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
If your problems continue, if you have trouble with multiple applications, or if you notice that your Mac is behaving in any other unusual way, consider the suggestions in Isolating issues in Mac OS X and let us know the particulars. We will offer other suggestions based on the details in your response.

  • ISight Freezes in Photo Booth, then dead

I have a 1st generation macbook and all has been good since except my isight stopped working. At some point, it would run 2 to 5 seconds in photo booth and then freeze. Close PB and green LED stayed on. Had to do a hard shutdown (not a restart) to get it to turn off. The first time, I erased the plist for PB and it solved the issue. A few weeks later, dead again, but tryed all proposed solutions (plis, repair permissions, ...etc - EZ Jim) and nothing work...still starts a few seconds and freezes; then all apps tell me it is in use, even under another account. Funny thing is: To run a test, I installed the drivers on XP (in parallels) and the isight works 100% in parallels. Go back to OS X, and still not working. (NB: The cam appears in the system profiler with the correct FW version). I'm running 10.4.11 and have the impression this had started since the last apple update (security update)...can't remember installing anything new except for an aftermarket battery which works 100% at the moment. Sorry for the typos and crappy writing. Best regards.
