IMac physical security options

The campus where I work has recently experienced a rash of iMac thefts from our labs. These computers were locked down with security cables, but the thieves clearly have a good pair of bolt cutters, and the cables failed to deter them.
As a result, we've been looking at non-cable-based physical security options for iMacs, of which we've found only two:
- The Noble Security Plate for iMac, http://store.apple.com/us/product/H4848LL/A
- the Anchorpad iMac Plate System, http://www.anchorpad.com/products/security-for-mac-computers/lockdown-plates/ima c-plate-system
We've also tried the Cavalier Lockdown Plate, which is not specifically for the iMac: http://www.computersecurity.com/lockdown/plates.htm
The problem is this: in our testing, all three of these were easily defeated with a small crowbar. I can't really call this a design failure on the manufacturer's part; I understand that any security kits are deterrents and not guarantees against theft. However, it seems reasonable that thieves equipped with bolt cutters would probably also have crowbars.
So my question is this: are there any iMac security solutions that could deter thieves of this caliber? I'm thinking of perhaps going with a home-grown solution: drilling through the iMac's foot and the table that it's on, and securing it with bolts large enough to deter bolt cutters.
Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Drill two quarter-inch holes in the base of the iMac's stand. Drill two corresponding holes in the desk top where you want the iMac to be positioned. Insert two quarter-inch hex head hardened bolts through the holes in the iMac's base and the desk top. Use bolts that are long enough to extend about an inch below the underside of the desktop.
From the underside of the desk, install a quarter-inch "body" washer (ask at your local hardware store) and then a conventional washer and a fiber-core security nut. Before tightening the fiber-core nut, apply a drop of Lock-Tite Thread and Bearing Mount to the threads of the bolts. The Thread and Bearing Mount will require the application of heat to remove it. (Ask me how I know.)
Once the fiber-core nuts are tight, use a pair of Vise-Grip locking pliers to destroy the exposed threads on the bolts by crushing them between the jaws of the Vise-Grips. That will  make the nuts impossible to remove.
When it's time to upgrade to new iMacs, sell the old ones and the desks they're attached to together as a package deal.

  • Can't access security options while attemting to erase iMac and iBook G4

    Hello all,
I am attempting to erase the hard drives on an iMac G4 and an iBook G4, both with 10.3 I've found the instructions, rebooted from the system install disks, and selected Disk Utility from the Installer menu. In each case, when I've selected the "Erase" tab, I've been able to select the "Erase" button for the hard drive, but the "Options" button has been grayed out.
I would like to be able to perform a secure erase, but seem unable to do so. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Bradley:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Security Option should be available when you select the HDD (Manufacturer ID) in the sidebar without formatting. However, reformatting the HDD is a good option as it replaces the directory with a new one. So, following Tom's suggestions is a better option for you. However, if after doing that the Security Options are still dimmed, please post back.

  • In Apex 4.0.1 Security Option Missing Under Manage Services

In Apex 4.0.1, I am trying to edit session timeouts and password policies. The online docs say to login as as an Administrator and navigate to:
    home->administration->manage services-> security
I am unable to see the "security" option anywhere.
Does anyone know how to get to this option?
    Thank you.

Sorry. I just realized that I was logged-in as a "developer" not as the APEX Admin which, of course, is why I couldn't find the "security" option. I had too many windows open at once.

  • WiFi Security Option No Longer There in 1.0.1 Update??

Is the Security Option under the WiFi/Settings no longer there in 1.0.1 Update??
Without it there, it is no longer allowing me to get on 128BIT HEX WEP encrypted WiFi Networks.
    Thanks, Scott K.

No, it is no longer there...
But, I HAVE found a solution...
For a 128BIT HEX password, if you place a 0x before the password, it will then take.
I noticed these two characters before other 128BIT HEX passwords in the Keychain application on my MacBook, and tried it on the iPhone, and it works!!
    Thanks, Scott K.

    Is this possible?
    Hope so!

  • Unable to secure erase: "Security Options" in Disk Utility greyed out.

Ancient eMac running Leopard. I have moved data to new Mac and am ready to erase old computer and sell/give away.
Went to "Erase" tab in Disk Utilities and both the "Volume Format" option and "Security Options" fields/buttons are greyed out and uneditable. According to instructions, to erase the data I need to select "Security Options" to proceed to erase all the data on my hard drive.
How do I "ungrey" that button? Is there a lock somewhere to unlock? Something to disable first?

You cannot erase the hard drive of the eMac when it is in use. You have to insert the Mac OS X install disk, boot up from there and then erase the disk from the Disk Utility software included.

  • DV7-2022TX shows 'failure security options' on black screen

My computer starts up and looks like its working but when i go to start using it it's frozen. So I press ctrl+alt+del and then it brings up the message "failure security options" on a black screen and all i can do is a forced shut down. It doesn't do it all the time, but often enough. It also tries to do a system restore itself but that never fixes it.
I hope someone can help me, i'm definitely not a computer expert so it would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks

A hard drive if it has failed will sometimes allow you to boot into windows but may not work completely (Eg: In a scenario, where system partition ;where windows is installed works fine but logical partition of hard drive has gone bad).
On certain conditions, if the hard drive is on verge of failure may/may not respond completely. I would suggest you to run a diagnostics using Seagate Seatools which works on any hard drive irrespective of manufacturer to actually confirm if your hard drive has failed.
Also, any hard drive can fail in spite of it been 1yr old or 1day old as its all manufactured in bulk and most of it comes from China

  • How much deep I have to erase my disk after malaware infection? (security option)

    Hello,
I got a Malaware from a website and I want to be sure that i will completely remove from my Mac.
Is it relevant how much, sorry for the incorrect term, "deep" I will erase the disk?
Does it need the maximum security option or a quick erase will solve my problem?
    Thanks for the patience

  • Is it possible to perform network data encryption between Oracle 11g databases without the advance security option?

Is it possible to perform network data encryption between Oracle 11g databases without the advance security option?
We are not licensed for the Oracle Advanced Security Option and I have been tasked to use Oracle Network Data Encryption in order to encryption network traffic between Oracle instances that reside on remote servers. From what I have read and my prior understanding this is not possible without ASO. Can someone confirm or disprove my research, thanks.

    Hi, Srini Chavali-Oracle
As for http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/options/advanced-security/advanced-security-ds-12c-1898873.pdf?ssSourceSiteId… ASO is mentioned as TDE and Redacting Sensitive Data to Display. Network encryption is excluded.
As for Network Encryption - Oracle FAQ (of course this is not Oracle official) "Since June 2013, Net Encryption is now licensed with Oracle Enterprise Edition and doesn't require Oracle Advanced Security Option." Could you clarify this? Thanks.

  • Setting Security Options with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)

    Hi there,
I want to print a PDF out of Excel via choosing the Adobe PDF-printer at the print-options-menu and like to apply a password to the PDF-files.
Is there a possibily to set the security options via VBA? I can choose the Adobe-PDF as a Printer, so I hope there is the chance to set the password like i can choose other print-options in VBA.
    Thank You in advance!
