Imac power button just blinks

imac power button just blinks.
I have an slot loading iMac that was given to me recently, when you press the power button the button blinks green and the screen does not turn on.
Apparently the iMac in question had OS 9.2.1 on it.
Ideally I'd like to 'erase & install ' the hard drive and install OS X Tiger, keeping none of the previous (OS 9) data.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
THANKS

The iMac in questions is:
iMac DV Special Edition
(Slot Loading)
Graphite
400 MHz
Slot loading DVD-ROM drive, 13 GB hard drive
I have tried to boot up off the install disc OS X Tiger and even OS 9.2 with no change.
Again, my goal is to completely wipe the system and install OS X Tiger saving non of the previous data.
Please help!

  • Dual G4 won't turn on. Power button just blinks

Hi everyone, first off I'd like to say that I know there are a number of similar posts to this but I read many of them and I think mine is a little different.
Earlier today my Dual 1.42 G4 powermac was on and was in the screen saver. I pressed the sleep button on my Apple 23" display and nothing happened. I waited about ten seconds and, needing to leave, pressed it again and left. Well, I returned now and found the computer was off. I pressed the power button on the display and nothing happened. It just blinked. I then pressed the power button the computer and it did the same, just blinked for a second.
I just followed Texas Mac Man's directions from other post by unplugging the power cable and removing the battery. Waited ten mins and tried power it up and nothing happened. Same issue. There are no start up chimes/beeps and the fans do not spin up.
I also found a link that showed how some powermac's power button go bad and that a usb keyboard with a power button can start it up. My display has a power button and it couldn't turn the computer on so this isn't my issue, right?
Some info about the comp: Dual 1.42, OS 10.5, everything stock except a ram stick I added three years ago. Thanks for your help in advance and can't wait to get this old champ running again.

I debated starting yet another "my G4 won't start" thread since my problem is more similar to Tammy in MO's.
My Dual 1 Ghz G4 (Mirrored Door) won't start up when I press the power button. The power button usually does not light up upon touch. The computer does not shut down on me when I am working on it.
The only way to get it to start up again is to unplug the power cord from the back of the computer for a minute or two (not long at all) and then plug it back in again. If I do this, I can run the computer all day without any problems. Once it goes to sleep or shuts down, then I have to unplug it again and start over.
    I have done the following:
    Replaced the battery.
    Reset the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    Reset the PMU:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1939?viewlocale=en_US
as well as done the PSU test:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9301520&#9301520
This last test yielded no voltage results, best I can tell.
Truth be told, I don't think I did the PSU test properly since the ends of my voltage tester are probably a bit too large to properly test the pins.
    http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/4280/fw800pinout.png
I even tried to discharge the power from the logic board:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=582223#582223
BTW: The red led on the logic board does come on and stay on when the unit is powered up and running.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if anyone knew how to solve the problem.
At this point since this machine is relegated to my wife and kids so for me it's more annoying than anything else. Any other suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • HT3988 imac power button pulses but imac will not turn on

imac power button will  turn on

    Hi and Welcome,
On my old G5 when I saw the red light through the front grill it meant that the machine was not going to boot. I just turned it off in the front, a hard shutdown, when I saw it. For me, I was able to wait for for a while and usually it would start up with no trouble again. But that Mac also had heat issues and sometimes running a small fan through the grill would allow me to start up sooner.
One thing that might be adding to your problem might be the amount of RAM you have, it's a very small amount.
Is your Hard Drive almost full? That can be a problem.
Can you start from one of the OS disks and use the app Disk Utility?
If you have the Discs that came with the Mac (originally), on one should be The Apple Hardware Test. That might help you diagnose the issue.
A PMU reset might get you started again. It's a bit model specific, for some it's just pulling the cord out (sound familiar?) and that resets the NVRAM. For other models this is a good reference: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1436
Quicktime likes RAM, so does your Mac in general, the amount you have is just sliding by.
Take a look inside your Mac to see if it's very dusty inside. That can cause a host of problems.
    Good luck.

    Hello Zpower,
It sounds like you have forgotten the passcode lock on your phone. The following article will help you get that reset named:

I have a copy of Final Cut Pro 3, but after installation, every time I type in the registration number, the ok button just blinks and won't let me click it.  What am I doing wrong?

Click here for information; if the computer beeps three or fewer times, remove and reinsert the computer's RAM. If it beeps four or more times, it needs to be repaired. If it's a G5, it will ignore RAM modules that aren't part of a matching pair.

  • My laptop won't turn on when I push the power button, just light on the caps lock key blinking

my laptop hp mini 311-1002TU suddenly hang, and can't to respon anyting from user, then I shut it down by force by pressing the power button, but when I tried to turn it on again, my laptop does not turn on, just the lights in his caps lock blinking, please help to resolve this problem, thanks.

I would suggest keep trying to turn it on and get the blue screen error code to maybe a get clue of precisely what the issue is. Ultimately, the processor likely needs to be replaced in most of these 1-blink situations.
If you have experience taking a laptop apart, here is a link to the Maintenance and Service Guide for your model. Removal and replacement procedures begin in Section 4.
Otherwise, I would recommend taking it to a local repair shop because they may have processors and/or other parts that they can swap in and out to determine if the processor is actually bad or not.

  • Estimated cost of repair for 2006 iMac power button fix?

Bought a used 2006 iMac, worked first day, next day no response to pushing power button. Tried all the standard stuff.
Any ballpark idea of how much I might have to pay at the genius bar IF it's just a broken power button issue? Under $100? Under $50?

It's not quite that simple, you will need to contact your Local Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider and ask them. Apple - Store Locator

  • 3 day old iMac power button spongy.

    Hi all!
I noticed this on day one, but it wasn't until I got to another iMac to try the power button that I noticed just how spongy the power button was on my new iMac.  At £1,700 I would expect every aspect of the machine to be perfect!
Anyway, I think it would need to go back to the store to be replaced/fixed.  I've invested a LOT of time into setting everything up over the last few days.  My question is, if I got a replacement iMac would this all need to be done again?
    Thanks!
    Mark

I'm new to OSX, and was wondering if they could migrate everything to a new mac and I'd have that one, so that's why I would "expect"/anticipate otherwise.
Thank you for the clarification. No, they won't do that.
There are many ways of implementing a power button, and it's likely that yours is working exactly as it should. Apple sources their parts from a variety of vendors and not all power buttons have the exact same tactile feedback. If you think something is not right, by all means have them evaluate it.

  • IMac power button in Mavericks

In Mavericks, I have to press the power button significantly harder on my iMac for it to sleep. I know I am not imagining it. Is this how it is for everyone else? Does anyone know why? I'm just so curious about how that could happen.

Nevermind -- It's not the force of the press, its the duration. Mountain Lion was a quick tap. I didn't realize Mavericks requires you to hold it for half a second.

  • Windows 7 on iMac - Power Button Sleep

My friend has Windows 7 running under Boot Camp on her iMac. She'd like it so that, when she presses the power button on the back of the iMac, Windows 7 goes to Sleep rather than Shutting Down. How can she make this happen?

  • 2005 20" iMac power button doesn't work

This appears to be an age old problem with several different models. But I will be as specific as I can about the model that I'm trying to figure out.
It is the 2005 iMac with the appearance of a totally sealed 2" sreen, (20" monitor). It's the unit with the big grey Apple on the lower front panel.
The fine print on the back stats it's an A1076.
I am quite familiar with most Macs, i.e. resetting PRams, PMUs on my MBPs that I have owned for years.  This iMac is a friends that have been having a chronic issue with the appearance od the power button not working, meaning when depressed, the unit will not respond.  The iMac never turns on or off by itself.
This has been a pregressive issue for the past year.  The iMac used to eventually bootup when you attempted depressing the power button after multiple times.
It's now to the point where it won't boot up at all.  When you depress te power button, sometimes the power light will come on for a brief second, then go back off, but the unit stays unpowered.
Typically with my MBPs this would indicate a PMU issue.  Easy to reset on MBPs. But on this sealed looking iMac, I am unfamiliar with how to even attempt it.
Anyone have the answer on how to access the internal PMU reset button?  The only access seems to be on the bottom side of the screen where there is venting screens and probably speakers.
Since I'm asking questions, should I assume you can access the internal battery at the same time you can access the PMU reset?
    I appreciate any suggestions.
    Brett

If this is the G5 PPC iMac from 2005 (have one of the 17" models) the problem may actually have nothing to do with the power button.  More likely to be a power supply or logic board issue.  If you remove the back, there are three captured phillips head screws along the bottom of the iMac, and look at the logic board, see if the capacitors soldered to the board have expanded tops...they look like tiny beer cans with an X on the surface.  If they have expanded, as most eventually do, you will see all sorts of bad electrical behavior, and they are almost impossible to repair.
If that is the case, best thing to do is remove the hard drive to use with another machine.

  • IMac power button problem

I am having problems starting my iMac. The power button has to be pushed 5 or 6 times before the computer will start.

I assume because it is a 17" it has a couple of years. Sounds like the switch is breaking, but has not completely. That would require the assistance of a technician.

  • IMac power button broken.  What gives?

I purchased a 2006 intel iMac on craigslist. It worked fine the first day. Next day it wouldn't turn on.
Tried standard stuff like using different outlets, making sure cord was tight. When it's plugged in I can hear a very light high pitched whine (similar to what you'd hear when turning on old TVs) but there is zero response to the power button.
The button seems a bit odd, like it's pushed in to far, doesn't always bounce back, if I run my finger in circles the button seems to make it's way back up. I tried the unplug for 15 sec, plug in, wait 5 sec and hit power trick. No luck with anything. Any ideas?

To me it sounds like you have two choices:
    1. Ask for your money back.
    2. Work out a deal with the seller to pay for the repairs. (which most likely will, well could add up to as much as buying a new 21.5")

  • IMac power button behaviour

Having purchased an iMac for my parents and parents-in-laws, I've come across a fundamentally bad (in my opinion) approach to the power button on iMac's. I personally use a MacBook Pro and the light indicator for when the laptop is in sleep mode is a very useful thing and this is greatly missed for the iMac. My parents could come back to the computer after it has put itself into a sleep state (from inactivity of keyboard and mouse) and the computer will look as though it is off. To make matters worse, if the power button is pressed in this state, the computer doesn't wake from sleep - instead a key needs to be pressed or the mouse clicked... so my million dollar question / suggestion is why not have the power button able to wake the computer from the sleep state induced from inactivity? In my mind this would make logical sense - or is this sleep state different to the Sleep state accessed from the Apple menu?

From further tests, I think there is a difference between the sleep state that is activated from keyboard and mouse inactivity.
If you activate the sleep state using "Apple -> Sleep" then you can use the Power button to wake it up.
However, if you leave the keyboard and mouse inactive for your set time to enter Sleep, the power button alone cannot wake the computer... and I think this is because this sleep has set the display to sleep and the computer to sleep... for me, this is strange logic and could be solved if the display sleep time could be set to "never".
Telling my parents to press the space-bar before pressing the power button everytime to turn on the computer seems against the simple approach that I thought Apple stood for. This problem all comes about because the iMac in sleep mode looks exactly the same as when it's off.
