IMac power draw while sleeping?

My macbook used to draw 1-2 watts while asleep. My iMac us drawing 11-17. This seems a bit high. Even an older PC desktop I had would only draw 3-4 (dual core, beefy vid card, multiple HDD's, etc).
I'm wondering what others experience when their iMac is sleeping. Even though mine is a 24", I'd be happy to hear from anyone with an alu iMac. I'd also like to hear any suggestions for things to look at as possible energy draws while sleeping.
Thanks

Very strange.
If you go to this page: http://www.apple.com/environment/resources/specs.html
and then click on Environmental attributes listing you will see that specified power draw whilst asleep is approximately 2.4 watts.
If you have MEASURED the power draw at 11-17 watts during sleep mode, I would take it into your local Apple Store.

  • Firewire ports and power draw while sleeping

After plugging in a power meter, I noticed my iMac was puling approximately 13W while sleeping. A bit of unplugging narrowed it down to the firewire ports. Each one was pulling about 6W, even while sleeping.
Will the firewire ports still draw power if the device is turned off? I'm specifically interested in an external drive that has a hard power-off feature (as opposed to simply sleeping). I'd like to keep it plugged in (I had been unplugging the cable except when needed).
I now I can check this myself, but I'm using the power meter for another project right now and don't want to unplug it and start over, but would like an answer "now."
    Thanks in advance.

An open cable connected to any port draws no power. Think of it as kind of a cable to nowhere. Now...connect it to some external object such as a printer or external hard drive and the current draw of the device determines how much power is drawn. Most devices in standby draw about 5-15W depending on their complexity.

  • Connecting power source while sleep causes issue

My macbook pro often lags when I connect or disconnect the power source while the lid is closed (sleeping).
In other words, when I oppen it after a sleep, the screen stays black but I can hear the fans turn and see the little activity light in front.
Is it normal, and if not, how can it be solved ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
After cleaning coolers my problem is still same. But when I disabled Lenovo / ThinkPad PM driver I think my problem is gone... I had random sleep problems or hibernation without reasons and temperatures are ok..
Clean install of windows didn't help, updated drivers of any kind didn't help....
First I assumed that is hardware problem but after driver update T400 started to goes into sleep mode when dvd is inside and I open lid goes into system and suddenly when there is notification near clock about founded new hardware in this case DVD he goes into sleep mode again...
once agian disabled tpm driver I think fixed this problem... Now I m confused laptop worked half or year without any changes and suddenly this problem comes out of nothing...
Is this problem of any kind of hardware or just some problem with lenovo drivers?

or is there an alternative way regarding the x300a speakers.

sudo pmset -a hibernate mode 25  , did the trick, usb powers down in hibernation mode, still able te awake the mini with bluetooth mice and keybord.

  • Imac 27 Buzzing while sleeping or shutdown...

Hi evreybody and first of all sorry for my English...
Here's my problem : When my Imac 27 ( 2011 version ) is shutdown or sleeping there a buzzing "electrical" sound ( like an high tension cable ) behind the screen.
I've read a lot of posts abour this problem and even found some video with the same sound.
Do you think I have to return my Imac to the Apple center near me?
Do you think it's a power supply issue?
    Thanks for your precious help!!!

Hello & welcome to the forums... your english great by the way, better than many that only speak English!
Do you have any USB or Firewire devices attached?
Could you have a Ground loop somewhere?

  • IMac turns off while sleeping

My iMac sometimes turns off during sleep mode, I did call apple care and went through utilities and the tech support said that issue should be resolved, but it happen again today. Has anyone else had the same issues? Is this also the start of some bigger issues down the line?
    Thanks,
    BC

    HI BC,
Check System Preferences/Energy Saver. Click the Schedule button bottom right in that pane and make sure it's not set to turn off at a certain time.

  • Black screen upon wake from sleep when I change power state while in sleep

    Hi,
I'm having this problem where my MacbookPro won't always wake from sleep.
OSX is 10.6.3 and fully updated.
I've done a lot of troubleshooting, and I can now replicate the issue 100%:
1 - Put the MacbookPro to sleep by closing lid
2 - Change power source (from plugged-in to battery or vice versa)
3 - open lid - MacbookPro will wake, but stays at black screen and is unresponsive.
Only if I change power state while sleeping will this issue show. Anyone else experincing this issue, and anygot got a clue on what to do?
    regards,
    Lasse

I've seen the same issue after upgrading to 10.6.3. I have a one year old MacBook Pro. I would have the screen be black after coming back from sleep or hibernate (tried both).
The workaround I found is to close the lid -almost- all the way and then immediately open it back up again, like I am catching the Mac going back to sleep and then changing my mind. For whatever reason, this has been reliably solving my issue for the last couple weeks reliably.
Only other oddity I noticed is that immediately after upgrading OS X told me that my one year old battery needed to go in for servicing...
Anyway, now all looks right with the world assuming you don't mind a quick close/open cycle.. Lovely...

  • Power usage while in sleep

Would anyone have any idea how much power a Mac Pro, for instance a standard 2.66GHz with 4GB RAM, consumes while it's both sleeping and deep sleeping?
The reason I ask is that Apple don't seem to provide any figures on it and I'm wondering whether it's more energy efficient to shutdown instead of sleep. My logic goes like this… if the MP consumes 40W while sleeping and it consumes 800W/min when booting then it would only require 20 minutes of sleep time to make shutting down more environmentally friendly (my wallet won't complain either) as it takes only a minute or so to boot.

Hey Stefan, thanks for looking it up. I ended up finding out via the Energy Saver 3.0 spec where it needs to be ≤7 (+ 0.7 for Wake On LAN) to comply.
    Again, thanks.

  • My IMAC screen went to sleep and I have it set to enter a password upon waking it up. However, my bluetooth keyboard died while it was asleep and I replaced the batteries and tried to enter my password and it is not picking up my keyboard. What can I do?

My IMAC screen went to sleep and I have it set to enter a password upon waking it up. However, my bluetooth keyboard died while it was asleep and I replaced the batteries and tried to enter my password and it is not picking up my keyboard. What can I do? I will not let me enter my password to get in and trouble shoot the keyboard. Please Help!!

I pushed in the button on the top right corner. It turns a green light on and then it goes off. I held it in until it started blinking. It blinks for a bit and then the green light turns off. I am still not able to type my password. What should I do now?

  • There was a power outage while I was asleep and my Imac was on. Now it is comatose, no sign of life no matter what I do. Help anyone?

There was a power outage while I was asleep and my Imac was on. Now it is comatose, no sign of life no matter what I do. I pressed the power on button for over a minute and nothing happened. I unplugged the cable and changed the wall socket too but nothing happens. I hope My hard disc is not damaged and the data is not lost. How do I determine this with no technical knowledge?

I'm very far from being expert at reading crash reports, but I don't think this is a kernel panic. I'm not seeing any signs of a KP in the logs. The following is basically some guesswork on my part and I might be completely wrong, but it may be worth thinking about.
In your crash report I'm seeing the process which seems to be responsible for the crash is BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Process: CFD 196
    Path: /Users/judybarnett/Library/Application Support/BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Identifier: CFD
    Version: ??? (34766848)
    Code Type: PPC (Translated)
Here is what I've found from searching BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD.
+5. BROADJUMP CLIENT FOUNDATION: During your use or installation of+
+the overall Licensed Software, the BroadJump Client Foundation+
+("CFD.exe") may be installed on your computer. The BroadJump Client+
+Foundation is a small application that facilitates communications+
+between the client software on your computer and your IAP's servers+
+that manage these applications. The BroadJump Client Foundation+
+periodically queries BroadJump or your IAP's servers for one or more+
+of the following reasons (a) to upload the subscriber registration+
+information that is collected at installation, or (b) to check for+
+available updates to your broadband access and support software or+
+messages from your IAP, or (c) for authentication to your IAP's servers for certain application communications.+
This is apparently some kind of software installed -- or which was possibly installed at some time in the past -- by your ISP (or possibly a former ISP.)
    Path: /Users/judybarnett/Library/Application Support/BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
The above means this is caused by "the thread trying to write to read only memory," and is always caused by an attempt to access some data. I'm also seeing that it was running under Rosetta, which is a translator for PPC Applications so they can be run under Intel, which is what your computer is now. My hypothesis, then, is that BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD might be something you migrated from another PPC Mac when you got your current one, and it, or running it under Rosetta, may be making things unstable. You said this has been happening off and on since you got the new Mac. So, the question is did you use Migration Assistant to move things over from another computer and was that a PPC Mac? If not, that probably blows my theory completely out of the water. However, I would still want to understand what BroadJump is doing on your computer and why it is running under Rosetta.
If yes, my first instinct would be to uninstall BroadJump. But first, I would contact your ISP and ask them if it is a necessary part of the functioning of your Internet service. If so, there may be an Intel version they can supply or they can recommend a proper course of action.

  • After Downloading Mountain Lion IMAC is having bluetooth sleep issues.

After downloading Mountain Lion my 21" IMAC is fine untill it goes into sleep mode for an extended period of time.  When I try to wake the IMAC with the Bluetooth keyboard or mouse it will not wake up.  I have to hold the power button down for 5 seconds.  This does not happen untill the IMAC has been in sleep mode for a wihile (I don't know the amount of time) but if I am at the IMAC and it goes into sleep I and wake it with know problem it has to sleep for a while for the issue to kick in.
    Thanks

Open Disk Utilities (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) and run Repair Disk Permissions and then restart the computer and retest.

  • IMac- does the Big Sleep

Much like the other posting in this forum, our iMac goes into Sleep Mode or Shuts completely Off whenever it wants. (Sleep settings are disabled in System Settings, etc... of course...)
We've had 4 (count them) Apple Authorized Power Supply replacements , 4 Logic Board replacements and 1 Back Panel replacement (in case the switch was bad...)
So...any thoughts on why this keeps happening?
We have the Computer in a UPS - so it's not a power issue. And we've had it simply plugged into another outlet -- so it's not a bad UPS.
    regards

Try this it worked for me, got this article from a Mac Genius
iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor), iMac G5 (iSight): How to Reset the SMU
The SMU (System Management Unit) is a microcontroller chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any power issue, resetting the SMU may resolve it. The SMU controls several functions, including:
Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so on.
Handling system resets from various commands.
    Controlling the fans.
Note that resetting the SMU does not reset the PRAM. Resetting the SMU will not resolve issues in which your computer is unresponsive—in these situations, restarting your computer will generally suffice. If your computer isn't responding, perform these steps one at a time, in this order, until the issue has been resolved:
    Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape).
    Restart (Control-Command-Power).
Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds).
Resetting the SMU can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so on. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues even after you've restarted the computer, try resetting the SMU. To reset the SMU on one of these iMacs:
Turn off the computer by choosing Shut Down from the Apple menu, or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    Wait 10 seconds.
Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
Let go of the power button.
Press the power button once more to start up your iMac.
Unlike earlier iMac G5 computer models, the iMac G5 (Ambient Light Sensor) and iMac G5 (iSight) computers do not have a button on the main logic board for resetting the SMU. This eliminates the need to remove the computer's back cover to reset the SMU.

  • My MacBook Pro Retina (late 2013) is daring LOTS of battery while sleeping

    Hello
So my macbook's battery started to drain like 30~70% overnight when it was sleeping.
My bluetooth is off, so is power nap.
Programs like 'caffeine' are also off.
I really don't understand why it taking so much battery.
    PLEASE HELP ME
(i can't go to a genius because i'm not in the states currently)

    Hi there joonkang98,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.
    Mac notebooks: All about batteries
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1446
There are several common causes battery drain that you can minimize.
Take steps to optimize your battery life per the Optimizing Battery Life section earlier in this article.
A common cause of decreased battery life is a "runaway process." Make sure to check Activity Monitorfor any runaway processes, especially after installing software updates or a new operating system. Installing updates is important to ensure optimal performance for all applications.
If you are still having battery runtime issues after optimizing your computer's performance and checking for runaway processes, test in Safe Mode. Safe Mode limits the active items on the system and allows testing in a more minimal environment. If the battery life is better in Safe Mode, you may need to do further software isolation for the items disabled by Safe Mode to determine what the power draw is while not operating in Safe Mode.

  • USB port powered while sleeping?

Does anyone know if any of the USB ports on an Intel 24" iMac are powered while my Mac is sleeping? So something like my phone will continue to charge while the Mac is asleep?
