IMac PowerPC G4 (OS X 10.4.11) migration to new iMac Intel Core i5 (OS X 10.7)

I have a iMac PowerPC G4 (OS X 10.4.11) and want to migrate my files over to my new iMac Intel Core i5 (OS X 10.7). I have a FireWire 800/400 cable. Is this the correct cable? Migration assistant doesn't seem to p/u old HD but it shows on desktop of new computer. Am I doing this correctly? I can't get past where the migration assistant is looking for computer.

You have the correct cable, use Target Disk Mode and bring all your data over to the new machine.

  • How do I use a Verizon PC Wireless card with my iMAC Intel Core desktop?

Help! Bought a Kyocera KPC650 Wireless PC Card for Verizon wireless internet. Works fine w/ laptop because it has a slot. How do I configure my iMAC desktop to accept this card? Is there an external USB adapter? Or do I have to get one installed internally? Which adapter works with OX 10.4?
I've seen the Quatech U132 online. Will that work? Its $192!! As is the Sewell adapter too. ($209)

What protocol is Verizon using that is not compatible with the Airport Extreme built into your iMac? I have used Apple's Airport Extreme with a lot of different wireless routers with zero problems as all conform to either 802.11b or 802.11g standard both of which are supported by the built in Airport Extreme.

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

  • Updates from Mountain Lion 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 on my iMac Intel Core i7 are giving me problems.

I recently updated my Mountain Lion 10.8.3 to 10.8.4 on my iMac Intel Core i7. Now I am experiencing all sorts of problems.
    1. It won't recognize my phone: Under the last OS I used to just plug in my phone and it would automatically recognize it and give me a desk icon. Now, nothing. I am forced to use bluetooth, which is so time consuming, to off load my photos. I even tried lauching iPhoto first and then plugging in my smart phone, and it would not recognize it.
    2. Clicking on files or folders on the desktop acts as if I have the shift or command key engaged and highlights all the ones I clicked on, instead of just releasing the last file I clicked on when I click on the next file.
    3. My mouse keeps disappearing all of a sudden. So I have to keep moving my mouse around until the cursor finally becomes visable.
    4. Some applications, when clicked on in the dock, open a new window as if the computer has lost the path as where to find the original except I don't get an error message saying the alias needs to be fixed. It just opens Applications.
These are the most annoying things that are happening since I have upgraded my iMac. Number 1 is the most important thing now as my videos are taking hours to off load.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Eric... I restarted my iMac in Safe Mode. It gave me the option of Me or Guest. I chose Me. It started up. I ran Disk Utility and I noticed that the repairs of permissions were focused on my scanner and printer. Nothing else. Restarted. Noticed that the mouse issue is fixed. Yay! Folder issue is fixed. Yay! Application/path finding also seems to be back to normal. Yay!
My Smartphone will still not mount. Disk Utility did not recognize the phone. Going into About This Mac showed me that it can recognize the phone via Bluetooth. Under About This Mac>Hardware>USB, it also sees the phone. So why is it not mounting like before? Or what is the next step? I read those articles you attached in your initial response.

  • 20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo Display problems.

It was hard trying to sum up my problem for the thread title... so let me try and describe what I am experiencing a bit more clearly.
I have recently acquired a 20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo,2 GHz(aluminum body black plastic back)-with display issues...
The problem is basically that there appears to be no happy middle ground in regards to contrast- it is either WAY too white or WAY too black... I would have to say it is more of an issue with CONTRAST than brightness, it appears that nothing I can do in calibrating the screen really matters.
I have calibrated displays before and never had this sort of issue. It is pretty bad (for example): a royal blue appears as black or gray mac highlight color choice appears as black.... white and medium grays appear indistinguishable.
all this in addition to the fact that there appears to be a gradient to the screen when you display a solid color neutral back ground, not too mention that it is VERY hard to look at this screen for very long and for what I do( 3D model making and texture creation) the display is pretty useless.
I have read about similar issues with this model's screen at other sites, but most of the threads ended without being resolved and were more than a year old.
This machine belonged to my in-laws and according to them, it always looked this way and when they took to back to the Apple store few weeks after purchasing it( brand new), they were told there was "nothing wrong with the display, it's supposed to look that way"... the machine was hardly used(just for iChating with our infant daughters), so I don't really think it is an issue with age or anything.
Now here is the really weird part:
I just upgraded the OS from 10.4 to 10.5 and when the machine first displayed the default 10.5 background(the Nebula one... blueish-pink with stars)... as it was going though the start up IT LOOKED RIGHT.
Once everything was done and all my icons appeared- Boom! Back to ugly.
I have noticed the same thing occur if I shut down the machine.
Startup screen, the default (nebula)background(my choice of background) comes up... it looks fine, the icons start to show up... everything still looks good and then when everything is done... BAM! UGLY!
I'm not sure what to make of this... any suggestions
One last thing- I am VERY familiar with the default background for OS 10.5, I have used it on my iMac G5 for over 2 years. When I say the displayed "looked right" I mean, it looked like what I was used to and how it appears on other machines.
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

    mcgyver,
If start up and shut down look correct then something is set or corrupt in the user options. To test this, add a new user and signon as them.
    Regards
Edit: I don't use 10.5.8 anymore so the following suggestions are for 10.6.5.
The things that may affect your display are:
System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing Tab. Display: Make sure Enhance contrast slider is set to normal. Use grayscale is unchecked.
System Preferences > Displays > Color tab > Display profile set to display or iMac. Whatever the default is on your system.

  • PowerMac G5 vs iMac Intel Core Duo

Hello, I currently have a PowerMac G5 Dual Core and am thinking of getting another computer. I have a question. In terms of performance, what is faster, the G5 (Dual) on the PowerMac or the Intel Core Duo on the iMac (running at the same speed).
And at the bottomline, what would be the machine that I want for gaming, publishing, and video editing? The PowerMac G5 (Dual) or the iMac with Intel.
Thanks for the assistance!! Have a good one.
P.S. Are there any plans of releasing a PowerMac with an Intel processor.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

(Oh...right...sorry for mentioning that) Thanks for hte response!
Anyways, I just want a computer that will not be outdated for a while. I don't want to purchase the G5, and then months down the road, not see the G5 in production anymore.
One thing about the iMac I'm not too fond of is the lack of upgradibility (or so it seems so). Due to it's size, it would be very difficult for someone to upgrade it's internal components.
I will be purchasing either today evening of tommorow, and I want to know what will be my best choice for the future, the iMac Intel Core Duo or the PowerMac G5.
I always thought of the PowerMac G5 as a beast, and I still do, but some of the latest reviews and benchmark tests I have seen have said that the iMac (with Intel Core Duo) has performed very close to the PowerMac.

  • Generation 4 iPod Connection to new iMac intel core 2 duo

Okay, first of all heres all my technical information:
-new iMac Intel Core 2 Duo
-Gen 4 iPod, non color diplay
    -running iTunes 7.0.2
-sadly, no iPod power brick(although i think i need it to solve the problem)
Okay, now to the problem, I tried to connect the iPod to my new iMac, and it worked after leaving it alone for 15 minutes. It is formated to windows and i wanted the music to stay on it, so i disconnected it. Afterward i just thought, screw it, and connected it hoping to restore it, but it never showed up in iTunes or the finder. I thought this was odd, then i looked at the iPod and it displayed a image of a iPod power brick going into an outlet. i havent been able to get to the apple store and thought there must be an easier way to do this, so i went to get the old install disc for my iPod that came with it. Hoping this would finally work, i tried to run the package installer for the iPod to install the drivers, and it displayed(after it evaluated my comp) "Cannot be installed on this computer, missing Mac OSX Networking Update" I've looked all over the Downloads area of the Apple site and havent been able to find it. Can someone please help me!?!

I have the new 24" flat screen imac and a new IPOD video. I was using the ipod on an old mac with 10.4 and it was working ok with a few sync issues. But when I tried it with the new mac I get very bad results. Itunes hangs and I need to do a hard power reset. Then the ipod once hung up and I had to do a restore on my old mac. Still have not successfully used the ipod with the new mac.
    my system is the following

This happens approx 10 mins or so after restarting the machine.
The IP i'm pinging is the router on my network. All other machines that ping to this IP are returning around <5ms pings so I know it's not the router.
When I connect via ethernet I get <5ms as well so I know it's not another program on my mac causing issues.
I've tried connecting wirelessly to an Airport Extreme, Airport Express and directly to the Netgear DG384 wireless box, they all have the same issue.
    Any help out there!?
    Thanks

Update- I deleted HP via Hp uninstall and also did a search on HD and deleted anything that siad HP. Reinstalled HP prpgram via original CD, then downloaded and installed OS 10.6 drivers and software from HP website then ran Apple software update and it updated 2 files and restarted the computer. The HP photosmart studio still did the same thing running very slow and not responding to clicking on any command. I called HP and they don't have Apple support on Sundays. Not sure if they will ever help me b/c I don't have extended service plan or they want to charge me. Apparently fro do google searches, they have been problems with the software and OS X 6-Snow Leopard. It's funny, I can print but just not use the photosmart software anymore. The problem seams to have worsened after I made a picture DVD using iDVD.- Where does iDVD get installed from? It's not part of iLife. I may uninstall iDVD and reinstall if I know where I got it from and see if that helps. I did run iPhoto yesterday and except for taking a long time to import my photos (hours for 1,600 picutres), it seems to run fine, so I can use that as long as I can use the printer to print and scan. I uninstalled HP again and was going to try reinstalling and only doing the Apple software update after and see if that chances anything. I will try calling HP after I have the software back on my computer. If I do decide to buy a new printer=- any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Michele

my imac (intel core i5, OS 10.10.1) shuts down every night and will not "wake up" next morning -- it never used to do that -- if I hold down the start button more than twice for many seconds, then it will finally boot up and works fine all day – I’ve tried shutting it down and unplugging it, and that does not work -- I’ve run disk utilities checked permissions, and run anti-virus and get no adverse results – I cannot figure out what is different that causes this problem

From previous experience 3 indicates a shutdown initiated by the SMC (System Management Controller) — hardware responsible for many low-level functions including power, sleep, lights, and fan activity.
    Try resetting it:
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Quark 6.5 crashes when opening existing files on iMac Intel Core Duo

I just switched from a G4 titanium laptop to an Intel iMac and Quark works fine except when I try to open a file that I created on the laptop (same Quark 6.5). It crashes. I talked to Quark and they said that I need to open the files on a PC and resave (I don't have a PC or a friend with a PC and Quark not that I'd send them all my files even if I did). I've tried resaving and renaming files with no luck. I tried reinstalling both the operating system and Quark (both 6 and 6.5) with no luck. Has anybody else had this problem and found a work around? I want to sell my laptop but I can't until I know I can access the hundreds of client files I have there.
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Sorry I have no real experience with this, just a thought. Did you use migration assistant to move the old files over from your G4 to your Intel? And did you then perform a "Repair Disk Permissions" upon the entire hard drive from within Disk Utility's "First Aid" panel? (located at Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility)
If the file move still is causing you a problem afterwards, you could try and work around it by moving the files in a different way. As a test, create a small file on the G4 and then email it to yourself from the G4. Receive that message into the Intel and see if the Intel can then open the file from inside Mail. This might avoid any "bias" created during the move from old to new Mac.

  • Imac Intel Core Duo 20' For Motion Graphics?

    Hi everyone,
Just seeing what people thought about the Imac Intel Cores for motion graphics based work. Basically I need to run the Adobe suite (After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Final Cut Pro.) Also, down the track I will be wanting to put 3D Studio Max via boot Camp.
How many of you are using this machine for motion graphics? And, is it as fast and productive as you would like etc?
    Cheers,
    James

Depends on how intensive you plan on getting with the iMac. For the most part, it should run pretty well. When the Adobe products become universal they should fly. I currently run all the same software plus Maya on my iMac G5 2.1 GHZ w/o a problem, so they should run just as well on the intel (more so when all apps become universal). I actually plan on selling the G5 and picking up the intel version so I can run boot camp and 3D Max as as well.

  • IMac Intel Core Duo Hard Drive Replacement

I may need to replace my iMac (Intel Core Duo) HD soon; I'm wondering whether the Geek Squad does work on Macs. Also, is this something a person can do themselves with good directions, or is that risky. I've put in memory, but think the HD is probably a step up. I have everything backed up and would get all my stuff back on HD myself. Has anyone had experience with Mac repair here?

    Welcome, Selia!
We certainly do work on Macintosh computers.  The criteria is: "Is the part user-serviceable?"  We would need to sendthe unit in for upgrade to our repair center if it is not something Apple has in their DIY section of their website.  This is toensure consistency and to avoid any issues if still under warranty. Typically only Mac Book laptop hard drives areserviceable in the store.
Either way, I recommend letting an Agent assist you in the store.  Let us know if you need further answers.

  • IMac Intel Core Duo: Which Install DVD disks should I be looking for?

I have an iMac Intel Core Duo (2 Ghz, 20") model. This was sent to me from Apple as a replacement for my iMac G5 when it had problems a couple years ago. I just realized today that they did not send me OS install disks for it; I still have the iMac G5 install disks though.
What iMac install disks should be looking for to purchase? Are they specific to an Intel Core Duo? Would any iMac Intel installation disk work?
    Thanks in advance.

You may be able to contact Apple and have them provide a replacement set for a nominal fee.
If it's the Core Duo white iMac from +early 2006+, it came with Tiger (10.4). Therefore, you can get install Leopard or the current Snow Leopard on it. You just need the standard retail disc.
Would any iMac Intel installation disk work?
Usually, installation discs that come with Macs (the grey ones) only work with that specific Mac model. A retail disc (the ones that are sold separately) will work with any supported Mac model.
There is another difference. The disc that is included with Macs also have additional bundled apps, such as the iLife suite. The original included disc for your iMac would have iLife '06, which is two versions old, so it may not be that much of a benefit today (iLife '09 is the current version).
