Hi Robert, Might need a USB KB.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • Various iMac problems: reboot and upgrade

    Please help:
My school unearthed a old iMac, and intends on loading it with a language software, and it fell to me to make it work. From the files I could find ( I am not very familiar with the OS it was running, the only Mac I use is OSX) _it is from 2003-ish, and is running OS 9_. Here are the problems with which I need your help.
    1. It is S L O W . It took 15 minutes to bring up the hard drive and look at the file headers on it. Dragging anything to the trash freezes everything (including the clock) for about 1-2 minutes. Any good way of fixing this? Will rebooting the hard drive to factory settings work? *How would I do that?*
    2. The software the school ordered needs OS X. What is the (cheapest) and best way to upgrade, and which version should I look for?
Thank you very much for your help,

You can find out lots of information in Mac OS 9 System Profiler:
    Apple > Apple System Profiler
    Click on the System tab
Look in the Memory Overview & Machine speed. The machine speed will give us the exact iMac model.
    Checking the firmware.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have.
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Also, why would I replace a battery? It works fine, and is a desktop, so it has a power chord.
Some of the iMac machines do not boot without a working battery, and you get the wrong time. If you have the machine open, you might as well replace it.
You can replace the batter by going through the memory slot. It's tricky.

  • Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the start up screen saying I need to restart my computer but it won't restart.  I just keep getting the same message every time.

Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the light gray start up screen with a message that I need to restart my computer and to hold the power button until it powers off and then press the power button again to restart.  It just does this over and over again and won't restart.

Yeah, as necronym stated, it is a hardware issue and more than likely a RAM problem. Disconnect everything from the computer except keyboard and mouse and try again. If it still happens try removing one and/or swapping your RAM sticks over. Keep trying until you have eliminated all possible combinations. Just put a mark on one RAM stick so you know what have tried. If it still fails to boot properly you should probably replace your RAM, but that is no guarantee of success. Have a look at this link for more info on a Kernel Panic.

Does the display look like this?

  • What is this? iMac i7 reboots on its own.

Can someone tell me if this is a memory issue? iMac i7 reboots on it own...

which is basically disconnecting ALL cables and power, and reconnecting following a precise procedure. When you reconnect it, initially try running the iMac with just your keyboard/mouse connected (nothing else). Check to see if this problem recurs.
If it does not, reconnect your other peripheral devices one by one, and keep checking if the problem recurs. If it does a some point, backtrack to identify the device added last. It may be faulty or interfering with the iMac.
If the problem recurs, even after the SMC reset with just the keyboard/mouse connected, please post back.
So far so good with wired keyboard and BT Magic Mouse

i downloaded carbon copy. transferred entire internal hd  to new replacement HD  thru USB adapter kit.  computer booted from replacement hrdrive. then i erased the internal hardrive and reloaded the operating system.( i needed to find out if the hard drive was bad or virus/worm was the cause). then installed replacement hard drive into iMac. when rebooting, imac did not recognized new replacement hd. i also upgraded memory at the same time.  ok what did i do wrong. do i have to remove the new replacement hardrive to extract the data.

It should not matter. CCC will "clone" the recovery partition as well, but not knowing exactly what operation you had CCC perform it is difficult to know what may have gone wrong - it has many customizable options and you have to choose the correct one.
I have performed the same transplant as you described and didn't have a problem, but if your Mac is not recognizing the internal HD you really have no choice other than to reinitialize it as suggested. After that, install OS X, upgrade to Mountain Lion if required, and migrate your old account(s) from your backup.
    my backups have backups.
I assume you didn't mean that literally. Have redundant backups - don't "back up your backups".

  • First big iMac problem. Help very much appreciated.

    Hi folks,
I've just come onto these forums today, for the first time, largely prompted by a major iMac problem i've encountered over the last couple of days. Please excuse me if any answers to my problem have previously been posted, but i'm typing on a borrowed laptop, which I have use of for today only.
Basically, I have a 20" iMac G5 RevB (my first Apple machine), which has been a pretty solid workhorse since I got it just after the release. However, having completely crashed 2 days ago, I can't access anything upon reboot. All I get is a loud and repeated clicking at the back (top right corner if you're eyeing up the back panel). I get a grey screen and no Apple logo. Eventually the clicking stops and the fans kick into overdrive. I get no further, aside from occasionally a blue screen with a folder with a question mark on it - nothing more.
I have no ethernet cables (or any other peripherals) connected, but this still doesn't remedy anything. I did manage to run 2 hardware tests, via the OSX DVD but nothing was flagged. However, upon trying to do a dummy run of an installation of OSX off the disk, it failed to recognise ANY hard drive within the computer onto which to install the operating system.
Can anyone offer any pointers, please? It'd be much appreciated.

don't have Apple Care, but I am still well within the one year standard warranty period.
Without AppleCare, you cannot get on-site / in-home repair.
Also, you will need to take the computer into your local shop for inspection / servicing.
With AppleCare, they will come to your home for diagnosis and repair.
If you were within your first 90-days, you would be able to call Apple to request phone service and possibly have them send the part to you for installation.
But, after the 90-days, they are not very inclined to talk to you on the phone. So, they send you to the local service center for inspection and repair.
One option is the online support system. You can chat with a tech online, and they can assign a case number to you, and send you to a website to order the replacement part.
I went through this chat method recently, and it seemed to work fine.
    Go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/
then click on the link that says:
    "Chat with a support agent"
One additional option, is to try the online wizard. It is on the same website, but has a link that says:
"Try the iMac G5 assistant now!"
This wizard allows you to browse through a navigational menu, and select the replacement part you need.
I had a sticky mouse button, so my problem wasn't in the menu. They had mouse related issues, but not my problem. So, I went through the online chat.
If you are able to find your symptom in the menu, then you might be able to order your part right there without chatting with a support agent.
Otherwise, try the support agent chat.
This might be more convenient than taking it in for inspection.
    Hope this helps.

  • I am having problems rebooting my mid 2009 macbook pro (grey screen other issues), need help!

I am having problems rebooting, I have experienced the same problem as others with the grey screen but my case is a little different, It started with my mid 2009 macbook pro acting a little slower than normal, the screen would freeze, mouse wouldnt move and i'd be forced to "force reboot" this went on for a couple of days until i was tinkering with the wifi connection and it froze again. I had to reboot and this time i noticed that it took a long time to get to the login screen. i put in my password and it went into infinite load (i also tried the guest account and other accounts with same result). i tried rebooting again and the same thing would happen. after several reboots, the screen just stayed grey, sometimes with the apple logo and gear sometimes without it. Since its a 2009, (and for the most part, still works like a champ) i decided test the ram, i took one stick of ram out at a time to see if i could notice anything wrong with them. when i stuck just one in, the mac was still having the same problem rebooting. i pulled that ram and and stuck in the other and i noticed that this time the apple logo never appeard and a big crossed out circle appeared. figuring that the ram must be the problem, i ordered new ram and installed it. i noticed that when i rebooted for the first time with the new ram it was rather quick and took me straight to the login screen and i was able to log in with no problem. at this point i thought the problem was solved, but i noticed the macbook still acting funny. at first, none of my files appeared on my desktop or in the finder window. after about 20 minutes, everything magically popped up. i also noticed long pauses/freezes with the colored pin wheel spinnig. i closed the laptop and opened it again and the screen just stayed black. i tried rebooting again, and again i got the grey screen with no signs of being able to log in... i waited about 20 minutes and tried to reboot again and again i was able to log in, however the macbook is still acting slow and will freeze with no signs of unfreezing without a reboot.
my macbook is 5 years old and has plenty of miles on it, so i understand if the thing needs to be replaced alltogether but does anyone know what could be the issue? could the bad ram have corrupted the hard drive in anyway? would re-installing the OS fix it?? and if so, how would i do that if i downloaded mavericks from the app store? are there any other solutions to this problem?
all my files and what not are backed up on an external HD so theres nothing on it that i'd miss desperately if i had to whipe the hard drive but id really like to get her working again without any whiping of the HD. if anyone can help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated

It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?

  • 56 day Time Machine backups. and 27" iMac problems.

56 day Time Machine backups. and 27” iMac problems.
I have a problem and its driving me to mad. I wish to backup my iMac to a separate hard drive, When I start TimeMachine backup there is a window that appears ,I switch on Time Machine , select my Verbatim separate hard drive which I have partitioned into three section , one called time machine backups, and click ‘backup now’ the process starts by stating ‘436GB of 500GB available’, Preparing Backup’ and this stays there for ages and then when it does start to backup states backing up 234 byts of 28.3 GB . I left my IMac on for fifteen hours and it still read the same , 234 byts of 28.3 GB also at one time showed ‘time remaining’ as 56 Days. It will not allow me to reformat the Verbatim and will not allow me to eject the backup hard drive. On disc repair it says things are OK, disk partitions are OK. Could I have damaged the Verbatim Hard drive when I previously forced a shut down as it was taking so long and would not eject theVerbatim hard drive. Also Just recently it has been impossible to shut down the iMac as ‘Messages’  is working and won't even force quit. I switch of at the mains.     Please help.
    Equipment.
iMac 27” 3.2 GHz intel core i5 [four months old]
    Running OS X Yosemite
    Verbatim [SamsungHD]  [three years old]
Partitioned in Three , Formatted as Mac OS Extended [Journaled]
    connected by USB 2 Cable
    Thanks.

First you should NEVER EVER partition a Time Machine or any other backup drive for anythings else but backup. This is likely why you are having issues, buy yourself a high quality EHD such as an OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro, format it correctly and make that  your Time Machine backup HD.

  • Can't get imac to reboot after it locked up

    hello,
did a hard shut down and  can't  get  imac to reboot,  all i get is the spinning wheel.
the computer is about 6 years old and i recently upgraded to leopard.
the system seems to be running more slow in recent months.
is there a way  i can reboot it using the leoplard disc? if so how?
    thanks, Owen

    Try this to start:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Problem reboot after download

i just upgraded to Yosemite  on my MacBook Pro.  It's having problems rebooting. the reload page goes halfway and seems to stop Or so slow I can't see progress . It's been over an hour since download.

After returning to the Apple store and reviwing the purchase, I saw that the Mountain Lion dowload had been stopped. I clicked on resume and everything proceeded according to plan. Yes, it did take about an hour and a half for the complete install.
    Thanks again.

  • IMac froze, rebooted but finder stuck in crash loop...

I have an iMac 2007 running Mavericks. Recently it has started occasionally freezing where my mouse still moves around the screen but everything on the desktop is completely frozen. After holding the on/off switch to reboot it usually comes back on and opens the folders/programs that were already in use and all is well.
However, today was different....it froze while I was using Safari....so I held the on/off switch as usual to reboot and the usual pop-ups appeared, asking me to re-open programs etc. However, since then I can't get finder to open...I have a constant flashing message saying "Last time you opened finder, it unexpectedly quit while re-opening windows. do you want to try to re-open windows again. - It gives 2 options 'don't reopen and re-open'....but the box is continually flashing very second as though it is stuck in a loop....doesn't matter what I try to press, it does the same thing over and over. It means I can access anything on my dock but cannot see my desktop files or any other files on the hard drive. I haven't done a time machine backup for a long time so wary of my next move. Ironically, I just bought a new drive for time machine and this happened before I got the chance to do the backup!!! Typical.
Other useful info may be that I think I only have around 3gb of free memory space on my hard drive right now.
I am on version 10.9.4 of Mavericks and there is a software update available.....should I try to do the software update to see if it irons this problem out or is there anyway I can backup my hard drive first or any other way of accessing my hard drive/desktop files before I do anything?
I have seen this problem related to Google Drive before but I don't use that...unless it is installed somewhere on my system without me knowing and still causing the problem?
    Any help greatly appreciated....
    Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste topost the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

    I have a 21.5" Mid 2010 iMac with 16 GB RAM, running 10.8.5.
    Problem #1
It's recently started doing some odd behavior when waking up from sleep. I have the screen saver set to come on after 5 minutes of inactivity and then the display and computer both sleep at 15 minutes.
When I try to wake the computer up by moving the mouse, it takes anywhere between 5-10 seconds for the password prompt to pop up and then it's another 2-5 seconds before it will let me type in the box. It also seems that when the computer sleeps, the wifi is disconnecting, because the computer won't have received any new email and all my mailboxes have the little exclamation symbol next to them.
After about 5 seconds or so once the computer fully wakes up, it reconnects and pulls all my new mail.
    Problem #2
This usually happens when I just browsing facebook or youtube or something like that, but when I switch over to another application and come back to Safari, I will get the beach ball for a few seconds and then the computer will freeze.  The mouse cursor turns into the little "I" symbol like when you go to type or highlight text.  The only thing I can do at this point is a restart.
    Problem #3
I have spaces set up with Safari, Mail, iCal, and iTunes in spaces 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Most of the time I'm in Safari, but if I move to another space either with the mouse or the keyboard shortcut, to check for new mail, for instance, and go immediately back to Safari, it will on it's own jump back to the space I just left.  It happens with any space no matter what.  I use the option + arrow keys to go between spaces a lot.
Does anyone have any idea why this happens?   Thanks for your help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • IMac Hard Reboot - Questions

    Here are my system details:
    - Late 2006 edition - 2.0ghz, 1gb RAM, 160gb HDD, 17"
    - originally had Tiger, but now running Snow Leopard
I am looking to try to "clean up" the computer for resale as I am looking to purchase a new iMac (either the current version or new one in June/July), but I have some programs where I don't have actual disks to reinstall them.  Some of the programs are:  Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint (all 2008 version), iBank.
    Here are my questions:
    1.  If I want to continue to run Snow Leopard, do I need to reinstall Tiger, then upgrade to Snow Leopard?
    2.  If I do this, will I "lose" my other programs?
    3.  Is there a better way?
    4.  Is the best way to get all of my documents off of my External HDD to use Migration Assistant?
    5.  What specific steps do I need to take to do a full reboot?  I've looked on forums for this, but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for.
    Any help is appreciated.

Chances are you will NOT be able to run Snow Leopard on the new Mac. You will need to run the OS that it ships with which is currently Lion. This should be OK unless  you have some legacy PPC (Power PC) based apps. You can check your app inventory by opening System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler), click Applications on the left and then look in the Kind column. Apps that are Intel & Universal will work fine, PPC apps will not run on Lion at all.
Not sure what you mean but your best bet is to run Lion.
    Nope
Yes use Migration Assistant. My suggestion would be to use an external HD and create a bootable clone of your internal HD. The most  popular apps for creating a bootable clone are Carbon Copy Cloner & SuperDuper, you can then migrate from the clone. This also gives you a backup of the old system just in case there is a problem and you can re-use the external HD any way you like, for example for a Time Machine backup drive or to continue using it to create a bootable clone of the new system.
I'm not sure what you're referring to by a re-boot however I think you are asking "How do I prepare my Mac for resale." If I'm correct please read these two articles:

  • IMac G5 Reboots spontaneously after adding USB drive

I bought a western digital My Book hard drive a couple of weeks ago and it seems that when it is hooked up my iMac will occasionally reboot. I reformatted the drive to mac format and have done a couple of backups. It appeared to be related to sleep so I turned sleep for drives off. It seemed to lock up when an operation was complete. Has anyone seen this problem and are there any ideas for a fix. Could it be a problem with the drive? The drive appears to work fine whenever I use it.

It completely died on Saturday evening while my wife and I were out to dinner. One of the discussions over wine & pasta was getting another mac (A macbook). My wife was tired of waiting to use the mac, she never wanted to use my pc. I came home to a dead iMac. It has the dreaded bulged capacitors and had given up the ghost. Luckily I'm covered so I'm hoping to get it back within the next few days. We went ahead and got a macbook so it isn't all bad. I'm loving this tiny little mac..

  • Imac problems and Apple Genius

    Hi All,
I posted a thread about my new iMac freezing and not responding and many of the people from the Apple discussion gave me great advice and support. Unfortunately, even though we repaired the permissions the computer froze up again and a call to Apple support had me doing a reinstall and archive to try and resolve the problem.
After talking to the Apple care tech, he said that it was not normal for the iMac to be freezing the way it was, I requested to I take the computer back to the Apple store that I bought it from. The tech connected me to the store and I made an appointment for Tue. at 10am.
After explaning to the Apple Genius what was going on he ran some diagnostics and told me that the hardware passed all the tests and as far as he could tell. When I questioned him as to why we were having so many problems and all the Mac owners I talked to on the discussion forum said this was very unusual and Macs are extremely reliable.
His reply was that the people on the forum didn't know what they were talking about because they are not Apple employees and didn't have any training. I was amazed by his comment and when I asked him if he was suggesting that it's common for Macs to freeze up and not work properly he started back peddling and said it was uncommon.
I left the computer for more extensive testing but I'm not at all impressed with the Apple Genius that I met and I'm even less confident that my iMac will be fixed properly. I've never had a computer that crapped out when it wasn't even two months old and after dealing with the Mac genius I'm less than pleased with my foray into the Apple computer experience.

    Hi Boece,
Here are the specs 20" iMac, Core 2 Dou proc 2.16 GHZ, 1 gig ram, 250 gig HDD, 8X Superdrive, Airport wireless, wireless keyboard and mouse, and I'm not sure what videocard is in it.
It has OS X 10.4.9, standard programs that are installed iLife, iWorks, Toast 8, and Mac Office, plus I just re-downloaded software updates from Apple due to the reinstall and archive.
As for how the computer was dealt with during the freezes and lockups my wife called Applecare and they walked her through powering down the computer via the on and off switch no other method would work.
As the computer was rebooting they had her hold down a key combination that included R and P and she verified and repaired the disk permissions. My wife asked if having to many programs opened could cause this because the computer was running very sluggish if she was working in word and opened Safari, he said no.
After repairing the permissions and checking the HDD my wife asked what permissions were and why they would do that he told her what they were, she still doesn't understand exactly what they are, he said he didn't know why but that it was uncommon on such a new Mac and said if it continued we might have to reinstall OS X.
The following two weeks we had occasional freezes ups and a reboot or force quit would normally resolve the issue but then this past Saturday the Mac locked up and again we could not login in shutdown, or restarted. She waited until I got home and then we again called Applecare and they had me put the OS install disk #1 and power down the system with the on off switch unplug the power cord plug it back in and then turn the system on holding down the C key. After the mouse and keyboard were recognized we walked through a couple of setup screens and then went to options and did a install and archive keeping the network settings.
While doing this I explained to the Applecare tech that we had been experiencing problems from the beginning and they were getting progressively worse and asked him if it would be possible to bring it in to the store for a full checkup I felt that something was definitely wrong with the Mac and wanted to resolve it quickly and get our Mac back up and running.
If you check my other posts you'll find another one about the Mac freezing and locking up which I posted after the first major problem. Dealing with and building Windows PC's I've found many times that forums and discussion groups are great places to research a problem because many times someone else has experienced the same or similar problems and a fix or work around can be found.
What I learned from this was that this is not a common problem and other users felt it "could be" a hardware or software issue but was most definitely not a normal thing for any Mac. I've also found that people in these forums are more inclined to give an unbiased and honest opinion based on "their real world use of the product" than someone who is involved in the business.
Being new Mac users we have very little "real world" experience with a Mac but according to the few people we know and those that responded on this forum our problems were not something that is to be expected from any Mac let alone a brand new one and as far as I'm concerned it is something that should be resolved swiftly and to our satisfaction. A brand new product that is not functioning properly is unacceptable no matter who makes it or what it is and the company should fix or replace it without question.
I have only been on this forum for a very short while but so far all the users have been helpful and encouraging and I'm hoping to learn from those who have much more experience than me with OS X and Apple computers in general. Unfortunately, my experience so far hasn't been quite what I'd hoped for with my iMac and my wife and I are concerned that this matter isn't being handled the way it should be so far and this is very disappointing to us given the excellent reputation that Apple has with many others.
    Thank You, Roger
