IMac purchased in July 2010 freezes on startup

iMac goes to blue screen the to an apple screensaver. Starts up in safe mode and from backup. Have repaired permissions and hard drive repair found no problems.
27" iMac running OS X 10.6.7 with a 2.8GHz intel core i7.
It worked until my wife hit restart. I think it was the first time since an update.
Any ideas? We need it running very soon to get a program don for the local HS.
Thanks,
Jim

Ran the extended test twice after the short one and it didn't find any problems. Had to get some rest to come here for my early morning chemo so I haven't had time to see if anything is working. Will try this afternoon.
My wife said that this started when a game froze the computer and she held the power button down to stop it and then restarted it. She thinks she got the bong, spinning wheel with Apple logo, blue screen for a long time, then the purple night sky. If we just let it sit the screen still goes to sleep.

  • My 2007 iMac runs slow and occasionally freezes on startup

    Hello,
    iMac overview:
    iMac (20-inch, Mid 2007)
Processor:  GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB
    OS: OS X Yosemite, 10.10.2
250 GB SATA Disk shows 154.58 GB free of 249.2 GB
I have been having the following issues with my iMac since upgrading to Mavericks, and they've persisted through to Yosemite...
    Issues:
intermittent "data crunching" sound that will last for up to 10 minutes, causing active applications to stall
if I drag the cursor over the dock early during startup, the computer will freeze
if I launch an application early during startup, the computer will freeze
Mail occasionally "re-counts" and reloads the messages in my inboxes, causing Mail to stall or freeze
Any ideas? (If it's recommended that I provide more information gathered from Terminal, I'll need clear instructions.)
    Thank you

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Your model has upgradable memory. Install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.

  • Imac 21.5 mid 2010 freezes is very slow enable to select anything.

    Hi,
Could anyone help with a problem I think I've overloaded my memory on my mac because ever since I transferred my iPhoto library to desktop it copied 18000 photos disk utility says I have 150gb of 1tb free, would like a method so I don't have to lose all files.
    Thank
    Rich

    Hi!
First of all, thanks for the compliment.
I totally forgot about the RAM upgrade...
It was done half a year (a bit more) after I bought the iMac. I think I can safely say that the freezes began four or five months after the upgrade.
I see discrepances between the required specs and my RAM specs that I didn't see years ago...
    My RAM specs:
    204-Pin DDR3
    1333Mhz
    PC3-10664
    Unbuffered
    Non-ECC
    1.5V
    4GB Module
Could this be causing the freezes? I can just pull out the RAM module and see if it no longer freezes, but like I said, It happens very randomly, and not a lot of times. Unfortunately, I need that 4GB module, but if you think that it could be the problem, I can easily buy another one (this time with the right specs), luckily they are not very expensive.
I'll be waiting your feedback. Thanks!

  • Imac freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans

My Imac G5 non intel 20" freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans start and it won't boot. just have the logo on the grey screen.
I've tried resetting Pram - think that was the right thing to do?
I've tried disk utility, but it won't settle for me to choose the hard drive, it kind of sticks and keeps rotating the wheel.
    any ideas anyone?
    please help.

Lots of things you can try - first, try resetting the SMU. Next, boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and try to verify and repair your hard drive. If that doesn't work, try running the Apple Hardware Test on one of your install discs.
Also, depending on which model you have, you may be eligible for Apple's power supply or video and power issues.
    Please post back with results,
    Miriam

  • IMac A 1200 freezes on startup

iMac A 1200 freezes on startup and screen gets multiple lines on it.
Cannot start up even from Snow Leopard DVD or external backup drive.

Check the Repair extension programs and look for your number. Whether you qualify also depends on how old your computer is. The extension cuts off three years after the original purchase date, but they have been known to make exceptions.

Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • Can i install 64 bit Windows 7 on my iMac? It was purchased in July 2011

I need to purchase a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate to install on my iMac using bootcamp. Can someone confirm if 64 bit version of Microsoft's OS will install on my iMac. The machine was purchased in July 2011.

64-bit Windows will run on all Intel Core 2 Duo or later Macs. But here's what you want:

I have an iMac that I purchased back in 2010 and over the past 9 month or less my computer just started shutting down while someone was in the process or working on it.  What could this come from?  Is there a simple solutions to this problem?

Which model iMac do you have?  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1758 How to identify iMac models
    Which OS is currently installed?
Check out KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379 Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
If not of the above works and you have AC, call them.  Let them deal w/it.  Otherwise, take your iMac down to your local AS or an AASP.  Diagnostic testing is FREE!
You can also research for a solution on YouTube's "How To" website and iFixit.

  • My iMac 24" freezes on startup and then works

Hi! My iMac has a startup problem: It freezes on startup around 5-10min and then works again. Sometime the desktop is loaded and sometime it only shows the blue screen. I can move the mouse cursor but the click doesn't work. I backup files with the time machine and reinstall the OS but the problem still exists. I run AHT (extend) and the result is OK, no Hardware problem. Anyone knows how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance. TW

More issues since I last posted:
It's running, very poorly, but am trying to upload an MP3 to soundcloud.com and the upload keeps freezing. It's nothing to do with my Internet connection either.
Quite honestly I think my iMac is on its last legs
I really need this running as smoothly as quickly as possible as my partner has recently been made redundant and needs the mac so she can look for jobs. This is very inconvenient :/

  • Imac freezes during startup stops @ blue screen & have tried everything

My imac freezes during startup, it gets to blue screen and just sits. I have tried to boot from the Leopard 10.5 install disk, and just sits, can't get to log in screen. Have run the disk utility and it says disk appears to be ok, Won't startup up in safe boot, blue screen just sit. Have tried 'fsck' fix, just sits at blue screen. Have reset PRAM, I don't know want else to try. Disk utility & "fsck" says 'disk appears to be ok'. When exiting fsck, it will start the process then stops. Does anyone have any suggestions, I have not tried to reinstall 10.5 yet.
    Thanks in advance
    Paula

After reading resolutions TS1541 & other threads, I decided to try to archive & reinstall 10.5 from install disc. Well that made things worse, sometime during reinstall, system locked up, I looked at the log during install & it had been locked up about 3 hours and now I have nothing. no systems files, using Target( firewire cable) disc with my macbook, I can see I have previous system folder & a folder that say system. but Install disc does not see OS.
Do I need to take it to an apple store for repair or what. It's only 3 years old.
    please help

  • Trying to install app disc on my New 2nd hand iMac july 2010 MC511B/A

When trying to install app disc on my new 2nd hand july 2010 MC511B/A get a message box showing OS X utilities, when choosing reinstall OS X get T&C's and then 2 options Recovery&Old Mac, Recovery option says locked, Old Mac option asks me to sign in on my @Apple ID, I do then nothing! tried just loading the 'Install discs (Applications & OS X) but no joy, though not sure if uninstall done correctly:(any idea's?

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

  • Look for my invoice from July 2010, bought in Washington DC

I bought IPAD 1 , in Washington DC on July 2010,
I need to look for the invoice, I paid around 650 US$ .

You are not communicating with Apple when you post in these forums; we are all just fellow users. You will need to call the store from which you purchased the iPad and ask if they can provide a duplicate receipt. Whether they can provide a duplicate receipt three years after you made the purchase is doubtful, but you can ask.
    Regards.

  • 17-inch, Mid 2009 mac book pro freezes on startup

My MBP occasionally freezes on startup.
it is a 17-inch, Mid 2009 model details as follows
Processor  2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
The problem first occured before upgrading to Lion, but does seem to be getting progressively worse.
I start the mbp, get the login screen, enter login and password succefully, and get the opening screen appropriate for my login...
BUT am unable to select anything or perform any actions except using the on/off button to turn the mbp off, when its turned on it usually logs me in succesfully and then behaves as normal until the next login or the one after that ...
Anyone have any ideas what might cause this or if there are any known cures?
    Thanks

    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
