IMac ram compatability

I have an imac with 1.5 GB RAM, and today i bought 2x2GB ram sticks, but they are PC2 - 5300. Since my iMac is a Early 2008 model it says that i need PC2-6400 RAM, is it still possible to upgrade??

The +Early 2008+ iMac uses +PC2-6400 DDR2+. You need RAM that matches that specifications. The ones you bought are for earlier Intel iMac models, and will not work.
Although you are in Australia so you may not order from them, OWC has a great Mac-oriented web site that will give you the exact specifications of the RAM for your iMac model.

Just use their web store as a references to ensure you buy the correct RAM.

Hey guys, i am going to buy MSI Gaming 3 (Z97) and there is in specifications this
    Memory DDR3: 1066/1333/1600/1866*/2000*/2133*/2200*/2400*/2600*/2666*/2800*/3000*/3100*/3200*/3300*(*OC) MHz
i wonder if i could mount following memmory in this board without any problems in compatibility or bottlenecking
Memmory: Corsair 8GB KIT DDR3 1866MHz CL9 Red Vengeance Low Profile
    Thanks for help

    Hi,
Should be no problem with this RAM. Though as mentioned by the spec, anything above 1600MHz is OC which is not guaranteed by MSI it will work (it's CPU memory controller and RAM compatibility debate rather than motherboard)
Though I am happy owner of Corsair RAM that is apparently 1600MHz (on the box) but runs flawlessly at 2133MHz

  • Intel iMac RAM: Different from normal 200-Pin SO-DIMM PC2 5300?

    I've got two questions here:
    1. According to this KB doc, "mid-2006" iMac memory should be upgraded in pairs "for best performance." That much I get; however, it also says that "The iMac (Mid 2006) ships from the factory with at least 512 MB of DDR2 SDRAM, in two 256 MB DIMMs; one in each of the memory slots." But according to the Apple Store, current iMacs still ship with one stick. We are in mid-2006, aren't we? So is the article wrong, or the spec page? My brother just ordered a 17" iMac, and we need to know what the RAM makeup really is before ordering more.
    2. While researching RAM upgrades for that machine, I found that NewEgg has two identical-spec Kingston RAM modules that are $30 different in price: Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - $88.99 vs. Kingston 1GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Notebook Memory - $119.99. They've got identical specs, except the more expensive one specifically states Apple compatibility, and is the one recommended for the iMac on the Kingston site. (However, it recommends it for "early 2006" iMacs, and doesn't have a "mid-2006" recommendation, which gives me pause.)
So I'm curious about the price difference -- shouldn't either one work fine in the iMac? -- and the inconsistency between the KB doc and the spec page. Does anyone who very recently ordered a 17" iMac know if it shipped with 1/512MB module or 2/256 modules?
    Thanks, all.

The mid-2006 iMac refers to the education only iMac released in mid-2006, not as far as I can tell the one that was released in January which is the current spec'ed one. The education iMac has very different specs as you can see here:

Being you are in France go to http://www.crucial.com/ or http://www.macsales.com/ where they will make sure you get RAM for the right model.

  • IMac Ram is constantly being eaten up. Advice...

    Hi,
I have a late 2012 iMac with 8gb ram,  1tb HD.    Recently installed Memory Clean and I find there is barely any ram memory available and is often in the 15-100MB range and am connately having to clean it to get back about 2 gb of ram.  Seems odd that the Mac would use 6 GB constantly.  Looked into Activity Monitor but don't know much about what I am looking at.  Here is my report from EtreCheck:
Anyone have expertise or advice on how to fix the problems below?  Thanks so much.

    After
    Problem description:
8 gig ram but always very low availability…using Memory Clean but never gets more than 2.5 gigs available…and quickly goes down to 20 megs avail….

You need to get rid of MemoryClean as that is one of the very bad programs to run...that takes a lot of memory itself and actually does nothing the Mac OS X does itself.
The Mac OS X versions from Lion to Mavericks grab most of the memory in the system, and then allocate the memory as needed.  That makes programs like MemoryClean and CleanMyMac THINK there is not free memory when there actually is.
It is more productive to look at Activity Monitor, Memory and see what is shown at the bottom of the pane...the Memory Pressure is the most important part.  As long as that is green you are fine.  If yellow you are pushing things.
For a system running Yosemite, which has a better memory allocation algorithm than Mavericks:

  • Early 2008 24" imac ram upgrade issues

Hi everyone.  Hope you guys can help diagnose a problem I have with my imac.
It's an early 2008 24" imac with 3.06 Ghz processor and an NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GS 512 graphics card.
After buying Empire: Total War I thought it best to upgrade the 2GB RAM to 4GB, and purchased 2x2GB sticks 800 Mhz 6400 DDR2 SDRAM.
When they arrived I put them in and the system booted up normally.  I could surf the net ok, but when it came to watching a video on youtube full screen, or playing a game, it would cope for 30secs-1min and then the spinning coloured wheel would show.  I'd then hear noises that sound like a cd trying to eject then the system would hang.  One of three things would then happen:
    - it would automatically reboot showing the multi-lingual startup message that the system was not shut down properly
    - a grey blank screen would appear and not change
    - the grey start up screen would appear with the Apple logo and spinning circle, which would then stop spinning and not change.
If I manually rebooted I just get a black screen and can only hear the fans softly spinning.
I've tried swapping the ram sticks but get the same as above.  It will boot and work normally with either one of the 2GB ram sticks installed on it's own.  It will also work normally with the original 2x1GB sticks installed again.
I don't get the 3 beep warning at startup.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening?  Would the graphics card be the reason for this issue?
I'm not sure if these are related but a few weeks ago I noticed that the brightness would randomly change from normal to half-brightness then back to normal.  These would change every few minutes or so and isn't dependent on what programmes I have running.
I've also recently noticed that the top and back of the imac is getting quite warm to the touch and no don't leave the system running when not in use.

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    iStat Menus...
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
EDIT: you won't find iStat Pro at BDAqua's link any longer. (No longer supported by the developer, and not completely compatible with Mountain Lion, but most of its features should still be working.) It's here
    https://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Do you have a link to the exact RAM you bought?
That grapics card is known to be a problem, but the brightness issue seems more like the Backlight or Inverter.

  • IMac RAM upgrade: 2+2+8+0 Is it possible?

    Hi all,
I would like to upgrade my iMac mid 2011 (21.5" - iMac 12,1), adding a module of 8GB of RAM to the original configuration (2+2).
I've been searching for a similar case here but I had no luck. All the questions I found were about adding a couple of modules, but my intention is to leave a free slot just in case I need it in the future for 8 GB more. Otherwise I would have to remove the original 2+2 modules, loosing them in the final configuration (4+4+4+4 instead of 2+2+8+8).
Is that possible? Theoretically, reading this Apple support entry memory modules should be of the nonparity type, so leaving one empty slot, we will lose the dual channel feature, but it should work fine, right?
Furthermore, if I install a 1600MHz memory module instead of the 1333MHz type that Apple specifies, would there be any problem? (I asume that, if I finally instal another 8GB module, it should be exactly the same type, so both should be 1600MHz modules)
Thank you so much in advance,
    JC

You have an iMac. There are no modules with heat sinks for your computer. That would be for Mac Pros.
The performance issue is dependent upon what you are doing. When a task involves the use of memory, predominantly, then dual-channel can bring a substantial increase in memory performance. But not for everything.
As for the speed. There are substantial differences in 1600 and 1333 MHz modules that can affect whether they will even work.
Your iMac uses the same type of DIMM as laptops use. They are 204 pin SO-DIMMS, DDR3.
Look for the proper product at:

  • Mini to iMac ram compatible?

Hello! So long story short, I purchased a mini and some ram and had to return the mini and couldn't get it replaced (they were out of them), so i upgraded to an iMac. I'm wanting to return the ram i bought for the mini but If i could slap it in the imac to make it 8 gigs that would be kewl. I know the imac has 1333mhz ram vs the 1066 for the mini but last i checked the ram was the same in terms of everything else. will the imac slow down the 1333 if i install the slower ram or will anything work, or should i just keep my 4 gigs and return the other 4 from the mini?
    Thanks!

    Hi beamermt25
Mac's are very finicky, it is best to stick to the proper speed and spec's.

  • First Imac - RAM question

Hi Ive just bought my first ever Imac, its on its way at the mo, and meanwhile Ive bought 2Gb of RAM to install myself - am I safe to install the RAM as soon as I get the Imac - before having switched it on and set it up?
Also I opted for the wireless keyboard and mouse but Im sure somewhere on the website I read that you need a normal USB keyboard and mouse to set up your Mac before you can switch to the wireless, is that right?
    Cheers

As for the keyboard, as far as I know, yes, you do need a normal keyboard and mouse to setup your Mac the first time as the Bluetooth Pairing doesn't take place until after the machine is booted into Finder.
Nope - you can use the wireless mouse/keyboard to setup your Mac for the very first time. How do I know? Because I did just that. With both a 20" AluMac and later, when I traded that in, with a 24" AluMac. I've only used the wireless keyboard/mouse on my Macs and had no problem pairing up then setting up. The iMac will detect there isn't a USB keyboard/mouse and put a little graphic on screen instructing you to turn on the wireless mouse then the wireless keyboard.

  • 24" IMAC RAM MAXED OUT...

I have the previous Imac 3.06 24" duo and have 4g of ram on board. Is there any third party work around for the 4g maximum ram on this machine? I'm finding some of the newer adobe apps running a bit sluggish.
I think I know the answer to this but I couldn't resist the question...

Check in your user manual for the specs required for your model. You can then buy any memory module meeting those specs. I believe they are 200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMMs.
You might try macsales.com or datamem.com.

  • Aluminum iMacs RAM question

    Hello all!
I currently have a Core Duo iMac, one the first Intel ones. My RAM is 667 MHz, I have 2 GB installed. I am using my iMac for working with large sound and image files, so memory and CPU speed are important to me.
I would like to get a 20" iMac when Leopard comes out, but one thing I am concerned about is that it's memory is still 667 MHz. Please tell me, is it worth waiting for when they switch to faster memory bus? Or do you know if the 800 MHz frontside bus helps somehow?
    Thanks,
    Artemiy.

    Thanks for your reply!
Yes of course I know it's Intel, and I'd have to wait for their new platform. The thing is I plan to keep that iMac until they release the next OS X version, I am afraid in 1-1.5 years, with my slowly-but-surely growing demands, 667 MHz memory won't suffice. Well, anyway, 667 MHz is about 80 MB per second, still very fast, maybe I am wrong here and increased front side bus and CPU speed would do much more to me!
    Thanks again,
    Artemiy.

  • IMAC RAM issues

I have a Mid-2010 iMAC 3.06 GHz machine.  It came with 4 GB of RAM (2x2 GB Hynix brand).  I bought 2x4 GB Corsair RAM from Bestbuy.com yesterday and it was recognized as having 12 GB or RAM.  However, it would crash every 5 to 10 mins. and reboot.  I tried switching the larger RAM to the slot the originals were in and moving the originals to the bottom.  Same problem.  I ran the hardware test from the DVD that came with the MAC and it said memory error - so I exchanged it.
This time I tried PNY RAM that said it is Mac Compatible and is the right specs.  Same issue.  It sees all 12, but crashes every 5 to 10 mins.  I did a bunch of testing this time around and found that one of the PNY chips is fine.  If I put it only in and run with 8 GB it works great.  The DVD hardware check does not report issues.  If I put the other one in by itself with the original - it sees the 8, but start acting up again.  The hardware test reports the issue.  I can even run the MAC with just the on good 4 GB PNY and it works fine.  If I put only the other one in, it won't boot.
Could I have seriously gotten two bad batches of RAM?  Could that MAC have done something to short them out?  I will probably return these for a refund... feel bad about it though.  I won't try any other RAM from Best Buy.  Where should I get an upgrade from?  Thanks for any info.

Was the RAM spec as shown below?
    Maximum Memory
32 GB (Core i5 or Core i7 Actual) 16 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    4 - 204-pin PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
Please note that PNY brand RAM seems to show up on the forum as quite often causing the issues you quote on many models of Mac.

  • RAM Compatibility Issue

    Hi all,
I tried to purchase a RAM upgrade from Crucial.com for my Mac and was told they do not sell RAM upgrades for my model due to compatibility issues. I am lost and don't know where I should go for a quality product or if it's even worth upgrading at this point.
    This is what I need:
    1.0GB (1024MB) PC4200 DDR2 SODIMM 200 Pin Memory Module 128x64 533MHz for *NEW October-2005* PowerBook G4 'Aluminum' 15" & 17" 1.67GHz Models using DDR2
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Yes, very much so. They specialize exclusively in Mac-related products, they stand firmly behind what they sell, and I and many other regulars here have bought a lot of stuff from them and recommend them highly.

  • Imac Ram replacement in aluminum duo core now with three beeps!!

Ok, I had a 2 gig stick in a bought a 1 gig stick to put in the other slot. As it turns out both sticks are made by the same manufacturer (Hynix) and both are pc2-5300s-555-12. I put in the 1 gig and got the three beeps with both sticks in. I took out the 1 gig and still with the beeps. I take the 2 gig out and put the 1 gig in it's place and it boots up. I put the 2 gig in the other slot...beeps. I don't understand what happened or why the 2 gig won't work in it's original slot anymore.

    Hi Cothirteen
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Perhaps the original module was not fully seated in the slot or popped out when you were adding the second module. Likewise it takes quite a bit of force to fully seat a module in a slot that has never had ram installed in it.
Following the instructions in the link below, it may require a second person to steady the iMac so that you can press real hard on each module with both thumbs.

  • IMac RAM - Apple Store Won't Sell, Order or Install

I have the iMac G4 800Mhz with 512 MB ram (256 MB original factory installed internal; 256 upgraded in the external at time of purchase).
I want to upgrade to 1 Gig ram. I was willing to take it to the Apple Store (Tampa) to get both chips replaced (the internal, non-owner replaceable is different from the external, user replaceable chip).
After a long run-around and much on-hold time, the store rep informed me that the internal ram chip (PC133, 168 pin SO DIMM) is not available from Apple, and further, the store cannot order it. He did suggest Crucial.com as a source, but said I'm on my own as far as installation goes. The store will not install 3rd party products.
I was willing to pay the premium and stay with Apple, to replace both chips ($300 total including installation).
I'm very disappointed that Apple will not support the upgrade of their product, even with all-Apple parts & labor.
Can anyone point me to an online tutorial that describes replacing the internal RAM chip? I'm mechanically inclined, and accustomed to handling electronics assemblies and tools. I was able to find tutorials on the external ram replacement.
My system has been somewhat slow since I installed Tiger. Also, I'm considering purchasing Virtual PC so that I can VPN via Cisco into work (my employer's IS only supports windoze (won't even support Unix)).
Any help on upgrading the internal ram slot, where to reliably purchase online, and any other comments on Tiger or VPN are appreciated.

  • Imac G5 compatability?

I have a one year old imac G5 that has the gforce 5200 card in it that is not supported for aperture. I read that the new update fixed that but when I talked to Apple the other day for something unrelated he said that it was still an issue. Does anyone know what is going on? Is it is supported or not? And if it is, how do I install it when the machine kicks the disk out saying it is not supported? Thank you all for any support you can give and have a nice day. Jeff

Personally I have a lot of trouble whith the term "supported," since many "supported" boxes preety much suck for use with Aperture. Only Apple can answer relative to "supported," whatever that means. Some unsupported boxes have been made to run Aperture and many supported boxes are virtually unusable.
However I will strongly opine that Apple is a heavy pro graphics app that demands pro hardware and RAM. Even if you can get it to run on a G5 iMac w/5200 it will be extremely limited. IMO use Lightroom until you can get a MacIntel computer, preferably a pro box (maxxed out MacBook Pro or a Mac Pro).
That said, at least one person has said "runs ok on my iMac." But scores of folks with boxes stronger than a G5 iMac with 5200 card (e.g. G5 Quad owners with 6200 card) have said Aperture performance is totally unacceptable.
