IMac RAM upgrade - Problem with PC2-6400S-666?

Hi, everyone -
I updgraded my iMac5,1 (according to specs found here) to 3GB RAM. Ordered the modules from Other World Computing. After installing the RAM (and reseating it numerous times) I received repeated kernel panics. (The Mac would "see" the memory as 3GB, and would run fine for a few hours, then kernel panic.)g
I have isolated the problem to the 1GB module that OWC sent me: If I replace the OEM memory that came with the Mac, it runs fine. If I run it with just the 2GB module from OWC, it runs fine. Whenever I install the 1GB module, I run into trouble.
During this process, I noticed that OWC had shipped me a 2GB module (OWC-branded, PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin, which matches the Apple-recommended spec), but the 1GB module is (Samsung) 2Rx16 PC2-6400S-666-12-A3.
OWC is trying to tell me that this Samsung module - which they substituted because they were apparently out of stock on the 1GB OWC PC5300 modules like I ordered - has firmware that will enable it to work with my machine, but obviously for whatever reason it does not. Perhaps it is simply defective, but I am trying to get them to send me a 1GB module that matches the 2GB module (OWC, PC5300, etc) just because I am more comfortable having the modules be the same spec. (Plus, that's what I ordered; a 3GB kit that was supposed to include all one type of memory.)
Has anyone experienced problems running PC2-6400S memory in their iMac? And do you think I am being reasonable to try and insist that they send me a 1GB module that is exactly the same type as the 2GB module? (Doesn't that theoretically minimize potential problems?)
I have usually had pretty good experiences with OWC, but this has been frustrating (they have also been slow in responding to me, which is disappointing.)
Thank you for any advice or insights!
Christina

I would absolutely insist that they exchange the incorrect stick and ship what you ordered. They are usually very good, but maybe you just got a rep who was not in the best mood? In any case, at this point, having a trail in writing would be good, so send them an email and politely but firmly insist on the correct module.

  • Graphic Upgrade Problem with K430 desktop - Unresolved!

    Hi,
Xmas 2012 I purchased a Lenovo IdeaCentre K430 Desktop from PC world.
PC World said it would be upgradable if I need to upgrade it.
    The system is:
    Intel Core i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
    16.0 GB DDR3
    1.8 TB Hardrive
    Windows 8
    Geforce GT 640
I recently purchased Crysis 3 and its not running very well, so I brought a Geforce GTX 660.
However when I installed and rebooted the PC, I was greated with a blank flashing screen?
other people have simular problems on the GeForce forums.
I have since took the card back PLUS 3 MORE for a refund, and very dissapointed that I can't upgrade this PC.
CAN SOMEONE AT LENOVO PLEASE REPLY WITH A LIST OF 'MODERN/LATEST GRAPHIC CARDS, THAT ARE COMPATIBLE WITH THIS MODEL STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX?
CHANGING THE BIOS SETTINGS DOES NOT WORK FOR ME!
It's been almost 2 years and I've still not found a compatible card, so much for the Ultimate Upgradable PC!
    Cheers.

  • IMac 27" Juli 2010 Model, i7 2,93 RAm Upgrade Problem

    Hi,
after running my brand new iMac 27 for a few days without any problems, I wanted to upgraded the RAM to 12 GB total, having purchased two 4 GB Samsung Mac certified RAMs from a dealer already.
I opened the thing and put the 4 GB banks into the two free slots closest to the display. After rebooting, I had to realise that the Mac only recognized 6 GB of RAM total! One 4 GB piece and one of the original 2 GB Apple ones, indicating that the other two banks were empty?¿ I took out the RAM again and was back to 4 GB of original RAM.
Now I took out all the RAM and stuck the two 4 GB pieces into the banks that the original RAMs were in. Rebootet the machine and voila, I had 8 GB of RAM. Opened the machine up one more time and stuck the original Apple RAM in the two remaining slots and after rebooting, I had the full 12 GB of RAM.
Now...is that the way it is supposed to be? And if, why would there be no mentioning of that behaviour in the manual? I have bought lots of Apple certified RAM from that dealer in the last ten years and stuck that into my other Macs and never had such a problem.
I just want to get some feedback, that if it works now, I am fine. Otherwise I could return the RAM and have them send me some in exchange.
The iMac so far is running just fine with the 12 GB of RAM.
    Some input would beappreciated, thanks!
    Peter
PS: I would call Apple support to ask, but my experience with them is, that they will just refer my to the RAm dealer, since it was not bought at the Apple store.

    Hi Roger,
well, my problem ist, that inserting the new 2x4 GB RAM modules in the two remaining slots of the iMac should have worked just fine and given me 12 GB of RAM. But it only showed 6 Gb of RAM and two empty slots, which weren't empty!
Swapping the original Apple RAM into the other two slots and using the Apple RAM slots for the new 2x4 GB RAM modules was the only way to get the iMac to give me the expected 12 GB of RAM.
So, I am still wondering, if there is a problem with the new RAM modules? It does not state in the manual, that 4 GB modules would have to be inserted in a particular slot for them to be recognized fully. It just says to stick them in the empty slots.
I knnow, it maybe a no brainer, since all seems to work fine now, but that Mac wasn't all that cheap and I don't want to risk anything.
    Cheers
    Peter

  • IMac RAM upgrade questions

I have Intel iMac bought in 2008. 2GB RAM. Looking to add to it. I watched a few video's on YouTube and it looks easy enough. The video says two 1GB cards are $110 and I see them on eBay for $30 so wondering if anyone knows the best place to buy this and can confirm what type I need to buy.
Any info on this would help make me doing this myself much easier. Thanks! - Nick

Check out Other World Computing or Crucial.com or NewEgg for reliable memory sticks at excellent prices. These sites also have specific instructional videos on how to replace the memory sticks. If you take your time and are very careful, it might take all of 20 minutes. I upgraded mine with no problems at all. It involved unscrewing a plate on the bottom of your iMac, pulling a couple of tabs to remove the old memory and then inserting the new ones.
Just make sure to check with the vendor on the match of the memory to your specific iMac.

  • Sore thumbs from iMac RAM upgrade

iMac 27" i7 Ram upgrade from 4GB to 16GB, boy, these ram upgrade really gave my thumbs a hard workout! I've had at least a dozen Ram upgrades across PCs and laptops, never had to push the Rams in as hard as I did today. Still sore thumbs after 3 hours!

    Try hard they pop up.
I just insert a 2x$GB in the free slots and it come with 2x2GB so like 12Gb.
Do you know the plastic tabs to remobe the modules?
I saw that one of them is like the paper in the photo,i see you have some experience upgrading ram so because none answer my post i decide asking you directly.
The 2011 imac is working for almost three months and it recognize the new memory modules but now i know that one of the tabs is touching a ram module,is that big problem?I mean no just because the static energy more because if the module become too hot(I even know if they become hot by use) the tab can burn,is something to worry about or just ignore it?
    Thank you very much.

  • 10.6.8 Upgrade Problems with Google Display Error post install

Hi -- I just upgraded my IMac to 10.6.8 in anctipation of migrating to Mountain Lion later this week.   While the installation went very smoothly, it seems I am having a problem with the Google display.    When I open Google, the search box has no lines around it and when I enter the box, it jumps to the Google search in the menu bar, and I can't read what I'm typing.
I've tried a multitude of other sites where there are search boxes, log in boxes, etc, but I am only having problems with Google.   Any thoughts?

boy these forums really help you out.  having similar issue and no one seems to have a clue why 10.6.8 screws everything up.  I did notice the active directory plugin version changed from 6.5 to 6.5.1.  They did something.

  • Imac late 2012 problems with motu ultralite mkIII through thunderbolt to firewire

first - hi @all users here in the forum.
i have a really curious problem with my audio configuration. at first i must say the audio-config. with my macbook pro (mid 2010) and my imac (early 2008) works fine without problems by using firewire.
but not on my imac (late 2012). there is a static, high frequently noise on my monitors. and i don't find the reason for that problem. i have delete alle the audio drivers and make a fresh install. reset the nvram and pram with holding the power key and so on. two weeks ago i have contacted apple care and send the imac to the next service provider. first i think for a defect power-supply. but the provider located only a defect ram. they change it and send me the imac back.  but nothing has changed. if i heard about the defect ram from the provider i know this couldn't never ever the reason for that problem.
i hope anyone can help a little bit by this problem...thank you.
    here is my hardware setup:

the static, high frequently noise on the right is stronger than on the left.

  • Intel iMac RAM install problems

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a new 17" intel iMac with the standard 512MB memory. Looking to add more RAM, I bought a third party 512MB chip and put it into my computer. It worked fine for as long as I had it on. After I shut it down and booted the next day, my iMac did not recognize the new RAM. I took the RAM out and put it back in and it worked until i shut it down again. Since then, I have had to take the door off for the computer to see the RAM. Anyway, my question is has anyone else had this problem, and is there a solution, other than buy expensive Apple RAM.
iMac intel Core Duo 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What brand RAM is it and who did you buy it from?
There is no such thing as "Apple RAM" as Apple gets it from a variety of sources. I use Patriot RAM in both my first gen G5 iMac and my BlackBook with no problems at all. Others have used Crucial, G.SKILL, Mushkin, Corsair, Samsung, OWC as well as a ton of others with similar success.

  • Leopard Upgrade Problem with Mail

I'm trying to upgrade an iMac G5 to Leopard, but am having problems with the mail installation. Leopard is running fine on the machine, but is getting hung up on the initial opening of the Mail application. A window pops up saying "preparing to import messages." I've tried fixing permissions using the utility application, to no effect. I seem to remember this being a problem when Leopard was first released, but I can't find any info addressing the issue.
    Thanks,
    S.

  • Upgrade problems with vista

Just loaded Itunes newest version to my vista system and now when I play songs they become choppy. It may play great for about 5 minutes then it will become choppy for about 5 to 10 seconds then play fine.
My other laptop with xp plays perfect with the same exact library. Wondering if any else has similiar issues.

I think because the upgrade that was just created for vista is so new maybe the bugs havent all been worked out yet. I plan on waiting a while before downloading it to my new vista laptop. I'm a little paranoid because I don't want to have any problems with it so soon.

  • BI 7 Upgrade - Problem with Authorisation Variable on Compounded Char

    Dear All,
We have just upgraded our DEV environment from 3.5 to BI7 and have encountered a weird problem with 1 of our authorization variables.
Our authorization check variable checks the values from a table that the users are allowed to use (which includes the selection screen).  There are 2 variables 1 for the uncompounded char and 1 for the compounded char, the uncompounded variable is working just fine but not the other.  When the user tries to pick a value, they are presented with not just their restricted list but ALL the values.
Can anyone explain this?  Has BI 7 changes the way authorizations work with Compounded Characteristics ?
Before anyone asks, these variables work just fine on 3.5 and are working just fine in our QA and PRD environments.
    Help required urgently.
    Thanks
    Craig

    Hi,
Yes authorisations in BI 7.0 are a bit different from the ones in BW 3.5. Here is the link which will help you know every thing in BI 7.0

  • Lenovo G40 ~ 70 ram upgrade problem

I bought a lenovo G40 ~ 70 laptop and I wanted to upgrade my ram.It contains 4gb ram and I wanted to upgrade it to 8gb .What type of ram card should I buy and after the upgrade will my computer have problems? thank you.

    Hi Ayato,
    Welcome to the Forums
As per the query we understood that you are looking for RAM upgrade for your Lenovo G40-70 laptop.
As per the specification of this model , the maximum memory supported by this model is upto 16GB DDR3L 1600Mhz.Hence I would suggest you to look into DDR3L RAM as the RAM slots in the laptop will only support the same. And "L" in DDR3L refers to low voltage.
Click here for the model specification.
Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists.
    Best regards,

  • Imac 20 Alu, problem with display

    Hi,
I noticed a problem with my display, but I searched ont
he forum, and other people had the same problem.
My display is darker on top and lighter on the bottom...I went to the system prefs and tried to calibrate, different ways, then I also tried with my pantone Huey calibrator...The gradient is still there...so everything on the bottom is more washed out.
As I am a graphic designer I think I will have to exchange my 20' imac for a 24" imac since it seems the 24 don't have this problem...
Anyone else has the same problem with the 20'?
    I bought this online and
I have this for less than 14 days,
I wonder if there is going to be restocking fee.
    Thanks

Hi, apparently the grading is more pronounced on the 20" less on the 24"
as for the restocking fee, ask the vendor. ..L
