IMac randomly freezes. Spinning pinwheel

My late 2009 iMac running OS X 10.6.3 and now 10.6.4 has had a problem randomly freezing. The problem is easily remedied by manually shutting down with the power button and then powering the machine back on. However, I am tired of having to do this and am wondering if there is anything that can be done to stop this from happening. There is no rhyme or reason to these occurrences. Sometimes it will happen when waking up from sleep mode. Sometimes it occurs when you are actively using the computer. I never overload the ram with to many programs or processes at one time. Also, I have tried various resets with no luck. Please help!

You people are overly cautious. As long as the drive isn't being written to at the time, you're not likely to do any harm to the system shutting it down by holding in the power button. Things were a bit different in the days before journaled filesystems, but like so many bits of sage IT wisdom floating about, it's based on severely outdated information. Look at the number of people still giving advice for ni-cad batteries to people with Li-Ion batteries for example. Telling them all about memory effects, and how you should let the battery completely discharge before charging it again. Hasn't been valid advice for probably 10+ years, which is probably just about how long it takes for it to filter down to the general populace. You've got to just love it when someone tries to pass off someone else's bit of advice/wisdom as their own in an attempt to seem like some kind of IT sage, and then because they don't really understand any of the background info, invariably screw it up or keep repeating the same bit of advice for years, long after it stopped being relevant.
Anyway, journaled filesystems, like HFS+, should be able to recover from just about anything short of a HDD failure. Granted the goal is to let everything shut down in an orderly fashion, but I got to tell you. Mac OS X tends to shut down way too fast, so behind the scenes it's probably just kill -9ing everything. Which is to say it's about the same as if you just shut the system off via the power switch.

  • Mid-2010 iMac randomly freezing after last Windows 7 update.  Help!  I am a teacher and have 50 computers all behaving the same way.

I am a teacher and have 50 mid-2010 iMacs running Windows 7 in my classroom.  The computers did a Windows 7 automatic update on or around April 15, 2014.  After that, each computer randomly freezes.  Some are worse than others.  Most of the computers freeze when a USB drive is plugged in and also when a pop-up shows up on the screen - especially the Java update.  I have installed the most current Bootcamp drivers and run several anti-virus program searches.  I've also tried the Microsoft Fix-it program and almost everything.  Uninstalling the updates did not help.  Can anyone help me out?

based on what you wrote this  doesn't make sense
use system restore to rollback the machine prior to this update

  • Imac randomly freezes   fan runs loud

    Hello,
My imac g5 randomly freezes. When it does freeze the fan kicks in and is very loud. This is a stock g5 Imac with no new software loaded. The only applications run on this machine so far are safari, and Mail. Does anyone have a clue as to what could be wrong? I've had the machine for 2 months and it has run fine untill the last week of random freezes. Also does anyone know apples policy regarding replacement or repair? I do have applecare. any advice would be appreciated, thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem. I've had it for a couple of months now. My iMac G5 (iSight) is only a couple of months old - I got one of the last ones just after the intel came out. The freeze occured loads with 10.4.6. I've just had it again with 10.4.7 - my first time since I updated with the full combined installer a few days back.
I regularly repair permissions. I have run fsck from single user mode. I have run apple hardware test - no faults. I have checked/repaired the disk from the install disk - no faults. I have removed all external devices - I previously suspected it might be a USB hub causing the problem but no. I have not removed additional ram as yet - that is my next step though it pains me to be doing such things when I bought the computer from Apple and you would think they would have installed Apple approved/top quality ram.
It is very weird behaviour. Never experienced it in all my mac owning days - and I've got/had a few. I had hoped it was a combination of 10.4.6 and the iMac G5 (iSight)... but the latest update has not fixed the problem. And I find it hard to believe it may be the RAM. Because surely RAM just doesn't fail that often?!? And like this?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  • IMac - Random freezes

My iMac G3 just freezes randomly for no reason. It has frozen trying to go to certain websites, and it has frozen opening diffrent folders, menus, and control panels. The same thing happens with it on OS 8 as it does on OS 9. Im guessing this is a hardware issue??
    Specs:
    Tray loading iMac G3
    160mb Ram
333mhz cpu (upgraded cpu board from 266mhz)
Please reply with your diagnoses. Thanks.

    Gavin -
At what point did you try installing OS X? Did you update your Firmware first?
You were always in for a bumpy ride using X with 160MB RAM, but if you do try going back to the original 32MB chip on its own as Strider wisely suggests, don't even try booting into X.
Since you have so many OS versions, is it just my nasty suspicious mind, or is it fair to assume the discs were 'borrowed' from other machines, rather than being full retail versions?
If so, I think you've nailed your problem.

  • IMac randomly freezing - any ideas?

My computer started freezing out of the blue a couple days ago. Yesterday it happened 4-5 times in the morning and then didn't happen again until just now it froze once. I checked the system log and see this error ::
    Sep 15 13:36:45 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 3
Any idea what that means?? I tried unplugging all my stuff, removing third-party ram....but I have no idea what that error means.
    Thanks.

I just started getting lots of kernel panics in the last week. Took it to the Apple Store and they are replacing the logic board due to blown capacitors. I've had it for 2 years and it just went nutty on me. Take the back off your computer and look at the capacitors. If they are bulging or leaking, then take your iMac to have it repaired. There is a repair extension program for Rev A G5 iMacs....

  • Macbook Air 2011 11" - random freezes.  Roaming wifi causing it?

I have MacBook Air 11" Mid-2011 (4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, i5).  Ever since getting the machine I've experienced random freezes - spinning beachball, screen becomes unresponsive, holding the power button to force it to close being the only thing I can do.  The console logs don't show anything that indicates a problem. They just stop logging anything until I restart.  I took it to an Apple store Genius while still under warranty and they kept it in for a few days and ran a suite of tests and found nothing.
The problem was completely random and unreproducable.  Sometimes it would happen a few times in a row, then nothing for weeks. Also, it was only happening when I was staying in a particular hotel during the week for work.  It was Hilton hotel with the wifi being provided by BT Openzone.  It would only happen there, never at home, family members house, Starbucks (which also use BT Openzone here in the UK, airports).
I recently made some changes to my home wifi setup and the problem has reappeared, but this time at home.  Where previously I just had an Airport Extreme, I have now extended the network over ethernet powerline to a second wifi access point.  The second wifi access point has the same SSID as the main network.
All my wireless devices should seamlessly switch between access points as I move them around the house.  Our iPhones, iPads and Dell laptop seem to have no problem doing this.  When I move away from one access point, once the signal strength drops to certain point, the device connects to the second access point.  The MacBook Air also does this, but it seems to freeze if I am in an area where the signals are overlapping.  This also describes the situation in the hotel.  The BT Openzone hotspots were spread across the hotel.  If my room was in an area where the signals from access points were overlapping I would be more likely to experience the freeze.
If I look in the Wifi logs I can see messages stating that some sort of threshold has been reached and the wifi is starting roaming.  These messages are always present at the time of the freezes.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Is it something Apple would fix eventhough I'm now out of warranty?  If it could be a hardware problem, would replacing the wifi card myself help?
    cheers.

  • Random freezes/crash - help please!

my macpro randomly freezes (spinning beachball) it happens using FireFox, iTunes etc. I'm unable to force quit the apps and I have to "crash" the computer. I ran "memtest" - checked out ok. I ran AHT - ok too.
I've read that usb devices can cause this problem (I have a Mbox2 for ProTools) but I need my usb devices (who doesn't?) I've found older posts with this problem - but I can't find a solution. Does 10.4.9 address this problem? (I haven't upgraded yet - awaiting ProTools qualification) any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks in advance
MacPro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   3 gig of ram

If you are old like me, that is a high probability :>). But, it could be that Apple, when they shipped you your Mac Pro, used the delta update to get you to 10.4.8 and not the combo update. Several that post here are adamant that one use the Combo, so much so, that I have adopted that methodology. The download is not that much larger, and after the rush ceases, I install over the delta I got from Software update. It seems that issues are resolved from doing things that aren't related. But that seems to be a life constant..... for me anyway. The Combos can't hurt and are worth a try :>)

  • IMac randomly frozen at grey Apple logo screen.

    Hi Guys,
    I need your help.
My iMac randomly freezes at startup, at the grey Apple logo screen... some vertical black bars appears, the image is unclear and doubled. The round icon showing that the system is loading freezes. Some times, a black screen appears asking for the computer to be restarted.
I need to power off the iMac for 7-8 times and then it comes to normal till the next boot.
One time, a month ago, the same happened when I was already in leopard, but since then nothing. Now, in the last week, it's happening in 80% of the startups.
    Any idea?
    Thanks !!!
    Andrei

    1. Have you installed any third party RAM? If so try removing the third party RAM and install the Apple original RAM for testing.
    2. Disconnect all external devices during testing. This means hard drives, ipods, printers, scanners, and hubs.
    3. Boot to your install disk. Insert the install disk and hold down the "c" key at startup. Once it boots up select your language but instead of going through the install process go to the Utilities menu at the top select Disk Utility. Select your hard drive/Mac volume on the left then under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk. If that passes/repairs successfully Repair the Disk Permissions. Once this is finished go back to the Utilities menu, select Startup disk, choose your Mac OS X volume and click restart.
    4. If you are still having issues insert your original gray iMac install disk, restart and hold down the "d" key. This will boot you to the Apple Hardware Test. Run the Extended test.

  • 1 week old 27" 3.4 I7 freezing and rainbow spinning pinwheel

Hello,   I bought a new 27" imac 3.4 I7 a few weeks ago and started having issues with it.  Returned that one and now I am having the same issues with the new one.  When I wake the computer from sleep I get the SPOD (spinning pinwheel of death)  you know that rainbow colored spinning wheel that says that some program isn't responding.  It spins for a few seconds after the computer wakes up and then goes away and then about every 10 or 15 minutes I get the SPOD while surfing the net and the computer freezes for a few seconds and then the SPOD goes away but now I am a bit more frustrated because the SPOD came and never went away and the computer froze and had to restart.  So bottom line should I return this computer also and get a new one since I am still within the 2 week return window?   I am wondering if this is a hardware issue or software issue.  If its hardware than the computer is bad but if its a software issue every computer I get will have the same problem.  What should I do?  Absolutely way to much money spent to have issues right out of the box!!!!!!  Very very dissapointed with this product!!!

Why haven't you called AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support. The number is in your owners manual, I suggest you use it. I'd also recommend keeping Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) open and when your get the SBBOD navigate to AM check if you have any runaway Apps by checking the %CPU column.  Also while you're in AM click the System Memory tab and see how much Free RAM it has. As a general rule of thumb if your have 500MB or less of RAM then the system is starved for RAM and needs an upgrade. It should look similar to:

  • Help me troubleshoot my iMac | random SPOD and freezes

ok, I am 1 step away from literally throwing this iMac out the window, but maybe someone has got an advice before I do so.
In the beginning of 2009, my iMac's harddrive went bad.
I was able to rescue everything via target mode so no big deal. I went and bought a new harddrive for it and replaced it myself. I found a very good guide for the whole procedure and after that I installed a fresh copy of OSX 10.4 on it.
Since then the system would start to do random freezes, sometimes for all running applications, and sometimes for just one or two simultaneously.
The freezes normally lasts between 10 seconds to 4 minutes and I have so far (1 year later) not been able to discover any kind of logic/pattern in these freezes.
Sometimes I can run a plethora of programs at the same time (iMovie, Photoshop, Quicktime, Safari, Pages etc) and everything goes fine for hours. Some times it will take me minutes to just launch Safari or Textmate.
Now, it isn't as though I haven't tried doing anything about it, it just that so far nothing have worked out.
Here is a list of things I have tried since it started in 2009
    - Running Repair Permissions (Disk Utility or holding down SHIFT when booting)
    - Running maintenance programs like Onyx, MacJanitor, Maintenance, iTools
    - Fixing font issues using FontBook, LinoType and FontNuke
    - Replacing/Upgrading RAM (I went from 1gb to 3gb)
    - Testing RAM with memtest
    - Running Disk Warrior
    - Disabling various processes/services (spotlight/mds etc.)
    - Uninstalling/upgrading/downgrading programs (mostly programs that I use alot like Firefox and Safari)
    - Upgrading the OS (first to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard)
    - Re-installing OS X (I have tried different combinations like re-installing to Tiger, then upgrading to Leopard and SL, re-installing to Leopard without upgrading etc.)
There might be more but I really cannot remember.
Of course my focus has been mainly on the harddrive itself since this was the piece that got replaced, but everytime I run Disk Warrior or Onyx or any other diagnostics app I have come across, I am told that the harddrive is doing fine.
In the middle of 2009 I then created a 50gb partition on which I installed Win XP. This was because of some work related software that I needed to run. Now, on Win XP I have yet to experience any problems relating to the one I have on OSX. (Of course there are problems with Win XP, but none of them were relating to my specific issue here).
So as it is right now, and have been for too long, I'm better off running Win XP than I am running SL, and that just ****** me off..!
Does anyone here have an idea about what to do next?
I have thought about buying a new harddrive to replace the initial replacement drive, but if that is the only choice I have left, I would rather save up for a new iMac instead.
I have already spent more than enough trying to fix this one.
Here are some details about the system:
    Model-id: iMac5,1
Processor name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor speed: 2.16 GHz
    Processors: 1
    Cores: 2
    L2-buffer: 4 MB
    Memory: 3 GB
    Bus speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM-version: IM51.0090.B09
    SMC Version: 1.9f4
    OS Version: 10.6.2
Some of these are roughly translated by me from Danish.
Thanks to the people still reading this.

    Hi Kguy,
    Thank you for the reply.
The freezes happens when opening programs and when running them. And it happens with (as far as I know) all programs on the computer (including TimeMachine, Dashboard apps, Finder, login in/logging out etc.)
As far as I know this is not related to my network, but I will try you suggestion and disconnect the computer fully before running programs on the computer.
Sometimes when the freezes happen, everything on the computer freezes, even the seconds on the clock.
And if I am watching something in Quicktime/VLC/DivX and a freeze happens. After the freeze is over Quicktime will then resume x amount of time later in the movie. Where x is equal to the amount of time the froze lasted.
    Hope this helps clarifying

  • IMac 8,1 Random Freezing

    Hey guys,
My computer has started randomly freezing in the past few months. As I'd migrated from a MacBook with a lot of crap on it, I tried a reformat, but to no avail. I also thought it might be my RAM as I ran Memtest and it came up with errors, so I replaced my 2 Gb of RAM with 4 Gb of RAM. It was fine for a while, but now the freezing has started again.
Here's a log of a period in which it crashed. I can't pin point exactly where, but I think it might be from 4:59 to 5:00.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
         Thomas.

    Hi Tom,
Unexpected EOF implies you need a Disk Repair or Reinstall.
IOSurface: buffer allocation size is zero implies a Graphics problem, haven't nailed all the causes ye, but often associated with Multiple screens.
Sorry, I don't have time to really study the log further at the moment, ut hopefully one of the other freat helpers here will pipe in.

  • Random freeze crasch an repeated warning sound on iMac OSX 10.6.8

I have a one year old iMac intel Core i5 running on Mac OSX 10.6.8
It randomly freeze, crasch an gives a repeated warning sound. Very scary!
Spoke to support and I have checked that the RAM are properly installed. Still crasch.
I've also restored the SMC. Still crasch.
Finally I spent the whole weekend reinstalling the system from scratch. Last step after restoring all content and programs I copied my Firefox data.
    Once again the systen freezed/crasched.
I'm broken. Does anyone know what the problem is?

    Hi,
Since you have reinstalled OSX have you tried a hardware test?

  • The spinning pinwheel on my Imac

The spinning pinwheel on my Imac constantly causes delays when using the machine. The hard drive has been replaced and the system scanned with MacKeeper showing no problems. Any ideas?

Remove Mackeeper at once!  As has been covered in these Forums repeatedly, Mackeeper is essentially a Malware posing as a useful utility, that when installed slows the system down and acts in a negative way on overall system performance.  And you will have to Google HOW to remove it because its Developers cunningly made it Very difficult to get rid of.  (Feel free to do a search on "Mackeeper" in this Forum for confirmation of what I'm saying by other advanced users.)
    Hope this helps

  • I can't adjust any settings in iPhoto preferences because it always freezes and i get the spinning pinwheel of death! HELP!!!

         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

  • '09 iMac now randomly stopping with pinwheel for 1/2-1 min

My trusty '09 iMac has started randomly stopping, with pinwheel, for 1/2-1 min. then continuing.  Happens from sign-on to internet to opening apps, anytime. Averages every 2-3 min.  Other computer, MacAir on network, has no problem.  Timemachine backs up to Airport Express tower.  Turning off/on has no effect.  OS X 10.9.1.

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
