IMac randomly goes to sleep / Previous Sleep Cause: -100

iMac (24 inch Early 2009, 2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo, Lion 10.7.3) randomly goes sleep.
No hot corners, never sleep setting.
It seems it goes to sleep more often when CPU is busy and graphic intensive jobs running (videos, gaming).
I cleaned up air ways by vaccume, but it did not help.
Temp monitor showed
  CPU 55C
  power supply 95C
  northbridge 89C
graphic processer goes up to 86C
when it went to sleep for no apparent reason. Are those causing issue? If so what can I do?
/private/var/log/kernel.log says
   "Previous Sleep Cause: -100"
Any idea what this is?
Thanks!

I took the iMac to nearest AppleStore and they opened it and cleaned up inside.
After that, it has not yet gone to random sleep yet while I've been trying to reproduce heavy CPU/GPU load for ~1h (while I could make it happen in 15min this morning).
So far highest temp went down to:
  CPU 55C             => 44C
  power supply 95C => 72C
  northbridge 89C     => 82C
  graphic processer 86C => 70C
Tech at AppleStore bar didn't know what Sleep Cause: -100 is.

My IMAC G5 will randomly go into sleep mode while I am in the middle of using it. Typically the fan noise increases and than it auto goes into a sleep mode. It also has issues starting. I have to press and hold the power button for it to kick on while also hitting keys on the keyboard to trigger it. Help!?

Here is the system log it looks like its over heating?

  • I upgraded to Mavericks and my iMac monitor goes black randomly, but my attached cinema monitor stays active. I can fix it by putting it to sleep and waking it up again. But often it happens immediately after.

I have a 30in cinema display attached to my iMac and the iMac screen randomly goes black while the cinema stays active. I can put it to sleep and log back in which fixes it, but often it happens again immediately after. Sometimes it happens so quickly I can't even finishing logging in! I'd like to know if this is a Mavericks issue and I will roll my machine back. Thank you!

    RocknOats
Wanted to update you on my situation with this.
So far 8 hours have gone by and I have not had a screen blackout.
FIRST I did the Hardware Test. TWICE on the extended test, the instructions on the KB Article explain. It took almost 3 hours, but while the test was running, both times, my computer screen did not go black.
I did get an error message, both times. Different each time. I looked up both of the error messages on discussion boards. Lots of conflicting info
One good thread said my first error was that my hard drive was bad and would probably fail.
The next error message I researched said that a fan was bad or needed replacement.
(information comes from other folks on discussion boards, not from Apple or technician)
Not sure what exactly those 2 error messages indicate but I followed a thread where someone found a solution by doing the following. So far it's worked.
After Hardware Test I did a shutdown and an SMC resest. Unplugged computer power source from wall and computer for about 10 minutes.
Finally after a restart  I downloaded "SMC Fan Control" (CNET Downloads has a nice safe copy you can download)
There is a temperature monitor and from what I've read so far, keeping the CPU temperature under 50˚C is ideal. Making sure your fans and computer is in a well ventilated area/room too of course.
The SMC Fan Control helps you set your own speeds on the fans and so far everything has been going normal.

  • IMac7.1 (10.7.5) Random Sleep Cause:-100

I have an iMac 7.1 (2007) The OS is (10.7.5). It has taken to going to sleep periodically. When I click the mouse, it will wake back up. Of course whatever was processing is halted and the wireless connection is dropped.
Whenever this happens, if I check the console logs, I get a log statement such as:
                       kernel: Previous Sleep Cause: -100
This is not the power management settings, the computer is set to never sleep and to not dim the display for hours. The sleep will happen when using the system. I had thought it was related to graphics as it had happened more with the videos. It has since proven to happen even if just listening to music on iTunes. (I think I have noticed it happens more frequently when synching an iPhone/iPod but not all of the time.)
I haven taken into the geniuses twice and left it overnight. The issue could not be replicated at the store. The system diagnostic scan shows the components as healthy. I was encouraged to look for something environmental. There was some thought that it may be a power supply but this was just a guess and the power supply does not fail diagnostics.
    Virus scanning turns up nothing.
I have taken all accessorries off the system other than the USB keyboard and mouse and a single USB cable for iPhone/iPod. This includes disabling and unplugging the time machine.
I have put a UPS between the system and the wall with no other components on the UPS to rule out poor power input or low quality power. This shows the output remains between 121 and 125 V and 0.105 Kw at 60 Hz.
Using istat pro from bjango, i see no particular pattern on the system operating conditions when the failure occurs.
After the above, the problem has become less frequent but still occurs.
    output from pmset -g is:

The memory, disks, etc, have not changed. The only changes have been periodic S/W updates and time. Powersupply was replaced by Apple 25 months ago.
    Any suggestions?

After reading other threads, I decided to run memtest to verify the memory in single user mode. The system passed.
I also upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and applied any subsequent updates. I also re-enabled the timemachine.
I noticed this changes the type of messages in the logs. I have had one failure after the update:

No I didn't do anything like that, but...
    I've found a pattern/cause!
It's every time I open the app store. Why on earth would that be?

  • Mac Pro randomly goes into sleep mode

My (mid 2010) Mac Pro, OS X.6.8, randomly goes into sleep mode and I can't wake it, have to power it off and reboot. Just started to the best of my knowledge Friday (Jan 6, 2012) I've had it happen surfing the web in Safari, while working on an illustration in Adobe Illustrator, while running Apple Hardware Test, using 23" LCD connected by HDMI and DVI-D, Disconnected monitor and connected 12" Cintiq (LCD Tablet).
The monitor goes black, says "there's no signal coming from your computer", none of the keys will wake it. I have to hold down the power button until it turns off then power it back up. The time between the sleeps varies, 38min, 1hr 34min, 5min, 2hr 17min, 12min, etc. I disconnected everything (except keyboard, mouse, monitor) still the same. Opened and removed the ATI Radeon HD 5870, and noticed the PRAM battery, replaced it with a new one, thought that fixed it, worked for a long time then it happened again.
Tried Apple Hardware Tester again, it said everything is fine, ran it again an error popped up: 4SNS/1/40000000:Te1S-99.364, wrote it down then it slept.

The next time this happens open your mac and see if there is still a fan running.  If so you are not sleeping, you are in a thermal cutoff.  Keep you mac cover off.
Now reboot as you always do.  Take a look at the fan in your 5870.  Is it spinning?  If so, try to keep an eye on it and see if you can "catch" it not spinning.
When the fan doesn't start, or if it does then stops, the card will overheat and the machine will go into thermal cutoff.  The amount of time is variable.
I speak from experience.  I am currently on my third 5870 video card.  Both the previous two had this fan problem.  The only wrinkle in my theory for you is that I wouldn't expect more that, say, 15 minutes of up time at the most, not hours like you got.  But it may be that your card is starting ok, but stops sometime later.   I chalk it up to the lousy fans Nvidia uses in the 5x70 cards.
FWIW, if you happen to catch the fan stopped before the machine goes into thermal cutoff you can give it a little nudge with your finger to get it going again.
I recommend one of the various temperature monitors.  I use iStat Menus and display some key temps in my menu bar.  Of course after going through two of these cards I am a bit paranoid!
    Some other temperature monitors:
    iStat Pro
    Temperature Monitor
    Hardware Monitor
Note, after typing all this I also realized you got a AHT 4SNS error. I would run AHT again to see if you get that error again.  If so that means "Check Main Logic Board" and you may have a more serious hardware problem than just a video card!  So my other recommendation is that when you machine fails again look inside for any lit diagnostic leds.  There's some near the dimms but there are others on the board as well.

  • Computer randomly goes to sleep and not waking up

My computer randomly goes to sleep-while I'm using it, and it won't wake up. Any suggestions? Is it something I'm doing?

Check temperatures by using Temperature Monitor -application. Atleast Macbook did this when there was problem with temps, cleaning heat sink and reapplying thermal solved the problem. G5 -based iMacs are known for running very hot temperatures and there was all kinds of motherboard failures as well as power supplies going bad.

  • How do I stop iMac from going to sleep automatically after 15minutes of inactivity

How do I stop imac from shutting down automatically after 15minutes of inactivity, trying to play music but the imac keeps going to sleep, tried changing power saving preferences to never shut down, never go to sleep, unticked put the hard disks to sleep, automatically reduce brightness, but still goes to sleep.

    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • My iMac goes into a deep sleep and can not be woken up; it needs to be shut down and restarted.

My Intel iMac goes into a deep sleep and can not be awakened; I need to hold the start button in to force it to shut down and then restart it.
    What might be wrong?

Try a very quick momentary press of the power button.

  • Kernel - "Previous Sleep Cause: -60"  - WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Occasionally my macbook will simply 'black screen' itself, putting itself to sleep while im using it....
waiting a while and closing/opening the screen wakes it but i cant figure out whats causing it...
the console gives me(i think) the following reasoning...but i cant find a 'sleep cause' list of the error codes...
    one of these was:
    "5/12/08 6:06:54 PM kernel Previous Sleep Cause: -60 "
what does this mean? it seems to only happen on battery but its annoying me ....
    any help?

My Macbook Air also has sporadic narcolepsy. Mostly it's with the same previous sleep cause (-60), but this morning it had mysterious cause #5.
I'm posting not in hope of a cure, but so that the folks at Apple will have two different models reported with the same problem. Should narrow it to firmware/software/shared-component issue.

  • My PB G4 keeps randomly going to sleep!!

First of all, my apologies if this topic has already been discussed...due to the issue I'm having, I have no idea when my computer will decide to go to sleep!
I've had my PowerBook G4 since 2005. For the past few days, it randomly goes to sleep. I can be in the middle of doing anything (like typing this) and it will go to sleep (it just did twice while typing the above sentence). When the battery is in, it does is every few minutes. When just hooked up to power (no battery), it does it every 20-30 minutes, but, in both instances, will rarely do it once or twice in a few minutes. When the battery is in and it goes to sleep, the battery does not feel too hot, so I don't think it is overheating.
When it goes to sleep, I can just hit a few random keys and it will wake up. Once or twice, I have had to unplug it and remove the battery to restart it.
    Other (possibly) pertinent information:
-I always have it plugged in while using it-very, very, rarely use it with just the battery. No specific reason, just habit, I guess.
-I have never replaced the battery or the charger.
I will admit that I haven't always kept up to date on updates, and I am sort of technologically clueless. Because of my lack of knowledge, this freaks me out a bit that my computer is doing this. I love it and have never had any problems before! I know I can take it to Apple, but, I don't want to take it if it is an issue easily resolved. There is only one Apple store in my area and you typically have to wait a few days for an appointment.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!!

    Welcome!
I'm suspecting you 5-year old battery might have something to do with it. The clue to this is:
Once or twice, I have had to unplug it and remove the battery to restart it.
That sounds like you're short on power. Mine did that when the battery was dying, although not while the A/C adaptor was connected. Still, a very heavy-duty program can draw power from both the battery and the A/C adaptor in newer Mac notebooks, so that's a possibility in older ones.
To check your battery's condition, do "About this Mac..." from the Apple menu and click "More Info..." in the resulting window. You're now looking at the very informative utility, System Profiler. In the left-hand pane, find and select "Power." Then look at the info in the main pane for "Battery Information." You don't say what version of the Mac OS you have, and Profiler can show slightly different info from Panther to Tiger to Leopard.
Anyway, you need to look for the section under Battery Information that has items like "Charge remaining (mah)," "Full charge capacity (mah)," and "Cycles" or "Cycle count." The last two are the most important in determining the condition of your battery. Copy and paste that section into a reply to your own thread and we will have a good start on figuring out what to do.
Please add your version of OSX to your equipment line where it now says PowerBook G4. It's also useful to show the processor speed. I assume you don't need to post the screen size as you've posted in the forum for PowerBooks with 17" displays.
Had I only my trusty old PowerBook in my equipment line, it would read:
    PowerBook G4 17"; 1Ghz processor; OS 10.4.11; 1G RAM
That doesn't make a difference for the question you posted today but is helpful to others should you wish to post another question. Saves a responder having to burn a post asking for the basics. BTW, all that info is available from "About this Mac..." or from the opening pave of System Profiler.
I'm glad you found us--I'm sure you will get some useful help here.

  • HT1776 Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops?

Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops? You can hear it running all night.
Appreciate any advice.I'm using Lion. Many problems started since using Lion!

The temps are a bit higher than I'd expect under normal circumstances, and too high while playing games, but what is the room temp where it is?
I def. think its a temp thing now. but why does it only raise when im playing games or watching videos online?
Games tipically press the CPU, Video Card, RAM, and everything else much harder than most apps.
It may be a Fan not working properly, or just dust buildup.
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    Report any errors it finds.

  • My G5 iMac only goes to sleep when ADSL modem is switched-off

My iMac will only put istslf to sleep if I switch-off the ADSL modem. I had the same problem with my G4 eMac. If I switch the modem off, the computer will quite happily nod-off. If I leave the modem switched-on and I return several hours later my computer will still be running. Can anyone make any suggestions on how to overcome this?

    Hi Mike,
    Do you mean a D-Link 302G?
I know that many of the Optus supplied D-Link modems actually have "Optus -customised" firmware installed, which even D-Link refuse to provide support for. Was the modem part of an Optus "package" or was it purchased separately?
If it is an Optus one you have problems, because D-Link won't provide support for the Optus firmware versions of their product, and at present Optus won't provide support for them either if they are connected to a Mac.
I have a suspicion that the firmware may actually be related to the problem, given that the same issue seems to have occured with two different computers. Optus aren't exactly renowned for their Mac support these days, I'm afraid, though there are suggestions that this may improve in the near future - see http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=531367
It would be interesting to see if a different modem behaved better. With the revised firmware the regular D-Link info probably doesn't apply. No chance of borrowing a different one?
(For what its worth Netspace are an Australian ISP who generally seem to provide good Mac support - they started off as a Mac focussed service called "MacInsanity" , in fact . I've been using them myself for many years.)
    Cheers
    Rod

Same problem, my brand new iMac (27inch 2011 SSD OS X 10.6.8) comes out of sleep and after a few seconds it looks like it cannot write to disk anymore. Programs that are open can still be accessed, however once they need to log or write something to disk the system freezes.
    Tried the following:
    Thunderbolt 27/06 firmware upgrade
    SMC and PRAM reset
Extended hardware test -> everything OK
Created new user to see if it is a cache issue that coming from my Time Machine restore from my old iMac
Keyboard and Magic mouse from my old iMac
Nothing helped, so I'm becoming desperate. I suspect an SSD drive issue however cannot find any error in the logs.
    Rgds,
    Zwiri
