IMac randomly shutdown

I now have OS X 10.6.8 installed.
I switched my iMac on today and logged in, loaded to desktop.  I clicked the apple symbol in the top left corner of the screen and BAMN, it shutdown before the drop down menu even appeared.
I copied out the system log, from console.  I'm hoping someone understands what happened?  I'd love to know.  Many thanks.  Check my profile for more system specs.

I have done the in depth analysis.  No problems found.  I guess that's a good thing!  Yet, I still don't know what the problem was.  Maybe it's due to the latest snow-leapord patch?  Or just a freak glitch?

  • Imac random shutdowns

    Imac G3 500mhz
It will power up and run fine and then will shutdown and the power light pulses slightly, can hear a slight buzz from the power supply/monitor part of the Imac, changed motherboards and downconverter and still the same problem. Possible bad power supply? Can unplug system and let it sit and then plug back in and it will start up and then shutdown again. Any help would be nice, Thanks

It is most likely (and obviously) a hardware problem. It sounds like a problem with the monitor. It sounds like the fan is faulty. This is probably the buzzing noise. And if the fan doesn't work, it will oftenly cause the computer to act strangely. The monitor is turning off from the heat that has collected in the caseing. Try to turn it on again (the way you do when you try to get it to work) and then check to see that the fan is spinning and it is spinning freely. (nothing is stuck in the fan blades, slowing it down.) Hope this helps! -TWA

  • Imac random shutdown prugatory... please lend an ear!

what a terribly frustrating situation. here is my scenario:
bought a new intel core2 duo imac in september of 2006 and after a year i was forced to upgrade to leopard and install windows xp using bootcamp in order to do work on the machine (to pay bills which is why i say "forced")
in hindsight it seems as though the computer may have been randomly shutting down as i was using windows however if it was, the computer was restarting to a fresh boot of windows.
so after a year and a bit i can finally replace the imac and buy a real windows only pc for work, which means i can use my mac again (yay!)
first problem i have to solve is the fact that it overheats the ati video card and i installed smcfancontrol to stop the overheating...
but now the computer restarts... aaaaalllll the time.
i dont have any third party things running other than:
    -smcfancontrol
    -google notifier
-connect 360 (xbox 360 media extender for mac
i went ahead and unplugged all the cables and let the computer sit OFF for 30 minutes (15 minutes is what apple says is the minimum) which is supposed to reset the PMU and this does not help either.
One thing that is curious is that the power management is set to NEVER turn off the monitor however it always turns it off.
The computer is set to never hibernate and it doesn't... but the screen always goes off.
i had screen saver set to OFF and it always went on. Now i dont see the screen saver anymore so i guess that is working.
Seems to me this is a hardware issue?
The machine is way out of warranty and there is no apple care... so what could this be?
Apple's repetitive response of "replace the logic board" is what the genius bar guy told me when i was getting my iphone replaced and that just scares me.
it is always the logic board.
and so i ask here for HELP...
    thanks.

If you haven't tried this, reset the System Management Controller. Instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
*"Seems to me this is a hardware issue?"*
Run the Apple Hardware Test from the restore disk(s) that came with your iMac. Go here for instructions.
    http://www.tuaw.com/2008/08/01/mac-101-running-the-apple-hardware-test-software/
Have you checked the boot disk for errors? Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. While you are running Disk Utility, at the bottom of the window where you see: S.M.A.R.T make certain it says: Verified. When Disk Utility you are finished with the Disk Utility application, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
The S.M.A.R.T is a monitoring system to detect possible hard disk failures.

  • IMac random shutdown w/10.6.7 update

I'm also noticing some weirdness today after installing 6.7 yesterday.
My 2006 iMac would not wake up from sleeping last night - requiring a hard reboot. I held the restart button in back down for an unusually long time before the white light in front lower right flickered many times for about 1/2 a second before giving me many beeps (I couldn't count) then shut down. Then a few minutes later, after clicking a window (browser I think) the iMac restarted. I THINK it beeped again (not positive).
Another thing is that the Parental Controls on one user is not working.
Scrolling is jerky: Mighty Mouse, Tracking 2nd to last bar on right, Scrolling all the way to right, DC 3rd from right, Scroll without inertia. I did notice bursting and stopping with scrolling.

After being convinvced that the motherboard may be bad, I saw a YouTube video of the mo/bo harness being replaced. According to this person, technicians informed him that they would replace this part before the mo/bo or power supply. *Apparently the harness was problematic for the 1st generation iMacs. Can anybody confirm this?* Or are my symptoms pointing to the mo/bo like the Apple Store person said?

Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems

    /Library/LaunchDaemons
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • Are the replacement Heatsinks fixing people's Random Shutdown problems?

Is the replacement heatsink (the shorter one) still the method of choice from Apple for fixing Random Shutdown problems?
Is it working for people who've had it done recently?

Does this max out the CPU?
Yes. People who advocate this are testing to see if it's possible to induce a "random" shut down.
Why would anyone want to do that?
Good question. I've seen two reasons put forward: (a) It's better to make it happen now yourself rather let it strike out of the blue at some later date (and if running this test doesn't induce RSDs you can feel confident that your computer is probably immune); (b) If you take your MacBook to an Apple Store it could be useful for demonstrating to an Apple "genius" that your computer has the problem, especially if your shutdowns are infrequent.
    (personally, I don't agree with (a))

  • 21-inch / 21" iMac Random Shut down

Ok, I have a refub imac, mid 2011 model. I have random shutdowns, not often but they do happen. I have swapped out and replaced ram by three different OEM's chips. I am trying to get 12gb installed. I have been dealing with applecare support from the start of the problems. No solution. Any suggestions. I am wanting to them to replace the new imac now. Apple had replaced the logic board and power supply too. Frustrated.

What makes you think it's the RAM causing the shutdowns? If you keep taking it back to Apple you may get a different unit if they can't fix it to your satisfaction. Three or four failed repairs and they repalce it, I thnk.

  • IMac Random Shut Down Problem

I having a problem where my iMac will randomly shut down without warning. Doesn't matter what app I'm using. The weird thing is that it ONLY happens after it has gone through a sleep/wake cycle. It doesn't happen after doing a cold start. The random shutdown happens anywhere from 30 secs to 30 mins after waking. I've tried the SMC reset, didn't help.
It is really starting to be a pain because I prefer to put it to sleep instead of shutting it off. Please help.

I'm having same problem. Random shut downs are truly random with shut down interval changing from 2 seconds to 20 minutes or more. I've tried everything, including reset SMU, PRAM, disk diagnostics. Disk checks out. I also deleted the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, then reset SMU again. No go!
From what I have read seems like a power supply issue. I guess I've got a good run since buying this iMac in Aug 2005. I read on another thread that www.synaptech.com has reliable replacements.
If anyone has any other ideas, then please share!
    thanks and good luck!

  • IMac randomly shuts down

My IMac randomly shuts down. I have the energy saver set for computer to sleep after 1 hour. I have not installed any new software. This problem began about a month ago. I have to use the restart button and always get an error, that the computer shut down unexpectedly. I copied one of the Panic Reports if that will help resolve the problem. I have checked the "maximum temperature" in Console and get no messages and many messagfor "shutdown".

    Hi Raydream ,
Try another outlet in another part of the house
Do you use a surge protector? do you have another surge protector to try? Just in case some thing is wrong with the surge protector your using. Also dose any thing else turn off or just the computer.
    things you can try:
Make sure your software is up to date:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1338
Verify your firmware is up to date:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237
    reset the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    reset NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
if your still having the issues I would back every thing up and then book an appointment for the closest apple store genius bar.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
if there is no apple store near you i'd locate an authorized repair center:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1434 , for the US it's http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
you can also call apple care (1 800 APL CARE)

  • IMac Randomly Shuts Down -Overheating Problem?

I've posted in these forums once before about my iMac randomly shutting down. I believed I had solved the problem by following another users instructions which were as follows:
"Machines that are just randomly shutting down are usually caused by defective hardware. The only thing that can be done about that is to call Apple and have it replaced or serviced. There is probably not any one particular solution as it could be any number of the internal components failing and the resulting symptoms could be the same.
If you'd like to do some hardware tests yourself before calling Apple that can be done. First try resetting the SMC: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Next insert the original gray install disk, restart your iMac, then hold down the "d" key until it boots up into the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended test.
Also if you have Apple Care install TechTool Deluxe from the cd provided. Then run TechTool on your system."
I also removed and replaced of a defective external HD that I thought my be causing problems. But after all these steps, the machine kept turning itself off.
I had read in some forums that it was due to the internal temperature of the iMac. So I downloaded smcfancontrol 2.1 and increased the fan speed on the internal fans. This did bring down the temperature as revealed by the iStat Pro widget. However, I still had another shutdown.
So I turned off the machine, went to bed, and this morning when I turned it on iStat Pro said these were the internal temperatures of the iMac:
    CPU A 77 degrees F
    GPU 85
    GPU Diode 88
    GPU Heatsink 85
    Ambient 61
    Memory Cont. 74
    Airport Card 112
    HD Bay 1 76
I find these numbers to be unbelievable. Especially the airport card. When the whole system seemed to be running hot, the Airport Card said it was 122. It always says something above 100 degrees. The other temperatures also seem out of whack. How can the CPU be 77 degrees after 10 hours of being completely powered down in an office environment that is only 55 degrees?
Has anyone else run into a similar problem?
Has anyone else found the problem to be a faulty temperature sensor (and is there a way to reset it, or does it have to be replaced)?
    Overheated? in Oregon...

Certainly sounds like a case of the left hand not knowing from the right, huh
Well, I have my call in, and I am getting onsite service to replace the logic board, as per Apple's recommendation.
I'm reading the other longer thread (171 replies), and it's disheartening to hear how some of the "geniuses" are handling this problem. They can't replicate it by leaving the mac running overnight, so "the problem doesn't exist". Hello! It's *random*! As in, not easy to replicate!
I'm also a bit disillusioned that the popular Mac sites (TUAW, etc) haven't picked up on this story yet. I emailed TUAW the link to the long thread, and they ignore it. Usually when this gets more "mainstream" press, then Apple finally steps up, acknowledges a problem, and serious fixes are made. Right now, it's a bunch of complainers (me included) in some threads on the Apple site.
I took a huge leap last November, and went from PCs to the Mac platform, after working on my personal migration plans for a month prior - how to move from my photo editing on the PC to the Mac (I wasn't about to buy another full copy of Photoshop, for eg, but I did find out I could upgrade from Win PS to Mac PS), if all the programs I use for photography and design were available on the Mac, learning the ins and outs of shortcut keys, how things are done, etc etc, and was so happy initially when I got the Mac and said goodbye to the PC.
Now I'm literally afraid to do any serious work on the Mac for fear of the "pulled plug" syndrome losing the last 20, 30 minutes of work I've been doing because I didn't save every 2 minutes. And iLife's Pages doesn't autosave (much to my chagrin), so I've lost some long correspondence and articles typed because I didn't save it before the pulled plug o' death.
Not a very nice computing experience.
As a suggestion, maybe everyone reading this and the other thread can flood TUAW.com with a news suggestion to cover this problem. Engadget, Gizmodo too while you're at it. I think once these million-viewers a day blogs cover it, we'll see some real action from Apple.
    Just a thought....

  • Overheating or random shutdown?

Last night I while I was using my iMac it randomly shutdown twice, one right after another.
I have had the random shutdown problem in the past but have not experienced one for quite some time. (I had taken several steps to fix, including running the disk utilities and deleting some power management file. Whatever I did seemed to be working.)
I had also been using iMovie, exporting movies, all day. I had also been heavily using iPhoto and Firefox, moving photos out and onto Facebook. The case was hot to the touch and iStatpro said that the power supply was around 159 degrees F and the CPU was around 135 degrees F. Is it possible I triggered some sort of safety cutoff?
Please help me out here. I love this computer but the random shutdowns are totally killing it. Thanks in advance.

    Hello All,
Here's my experience with unexpected shutdowns...
My 20" Intel iMac is 6 months old - August 08.
    - After shutting it down one evening as per normal, it just wouldn't turn on the next morning. Nothing I did worked: different power socket, changed the fuse (UK plug) etc. When I had just about given up carrying it around the house, it suddenly came back to life. Went to the shop to buy milk, got back and off it was again. Weird. So I spoke to Apple Care who suggested I take it down to the Apple Store in central London, UK. I laboriously did so (try taking the underground with an iMac... not fun) and dropped it off mid afternoon.
    - Got a call the same evening from Apple Store: my iMac turned on fine first time (typical), tests were being run on it (basically stress testing the processor with multiple processes), and it was fine. No fault was found, I could go and pick it up.
    - So I take it back home the next day, again battling with London commuters with my heavy, bulky iMac box and plug it in. All fine. Work all day on it as per normal (nothing intensive). Then at about 10pm, it just turns off. No warning, nothing. Just off, and this time its staying off. I let it cool down, nothing. Diffent plugs, nothing. Change the plug fuse, nothing. Next morning, nothing. Its dead.
    - So I head off directly to the Apple Store again, iMac in hand, and battle it out again with London commuters on the underground. I explain the situation, am promised this will be a priority repair...
    - Eventually, after 10 days (Christmas got in the way), I get a call that it is ready. Two items of hardware were changed, namely 1) power supply and 2) Cable/DC Power/SATA/Inverter. Though none of them were actually faulty, they are the items that can cause sudden shutdowns...
    - I pick it up, and it seems fine since. But upon switching it on, I noticed the whole bottom half of my dispay was dim. Bright at the top, grey at the bottom... Another chat with Apple Care (by then am on first name terms with the whole team), we do various hardware resets to no avail. Am advised to drop it off at Apple. So off I go to the Apple Store again.
And I just got it back again.. with a new LCD display...
So the cost of all repairs to my 6 months old iMac is now more than half of the overall cost of the machine. Still, credit to Apple for not quibbling on any of the above issues, and fixing them (relatively) quickly and efficiently.

  • Do the newer macbooks also suffer random shutdowns?

Hi there, I'm considering buying a Mac, and I'm stumped for choice. I'm choosing between an iMac 17 inch to replace my PC, or a Macbook for portability. If I am going to be buying a Macbook, I want to know if Apple tested them for random shutdowns first, just so I know that I won't be buying a machine that I'll have to send out within the first week of recieving it. If the new macbooks (as in the ones with Core 2 Duo processors) still suffer random shutdowns I'll probably go for an iMac instead.

You're claim that everyone who owns 1 (22 out of 25 people) has a problem is total hogwash. Geez, why would you say such a thing? I recently sold my Core Duo BlackBook, one of the first 500 off the assembly line), and never once had a problem with it - ever! I really didn't want to sell it because it was such a fine workhorse but I wanted 801.n on my home network and needed a C2D to get that. I carried it around on all my hospital rounds and it contained every one of my patient's health records. If MacBooks were as you claimed then Jobs must of personally touched my BlackBook with the luck of the Gods!
Before it was even sold I bought another C2D BlackBook, loaded it with 3Gig of RAM (yes, you CAN upgrade to 3Gig) and the thing is a most excellent machine. Faster, sleeker, and works like a champ. I transferred all my patient's records within 20 minutes.
My advice: don't believe the naysayers. Especially here. These forums were established to assist MacBook users with all issues, including problems. But the number of problems is miniscule and those you read here come from less than 1% of the MacBook owners.
The Core Duo BlackBook sold for just $200 less then what I paid for it and it was fully loaded with everything I could put on it when I originally purchased it. I used it a full year (May to May) and figured the $200 was a year's worth of cheap rental.
BTW, I got a better BlackBook for less money this time around. Faster CPU, larger hard drive, more RAM and a superior laptop to those of my colleagues - what more could a geek physician ask for?

  • Possible Random Shutdowns

    Greetings to All,
I have been reading all these posts regarding random shutdowns on the MacBooks, and although I have never had it happen on either of my MacBooks (Week 27 and 29), I have had to troubleshoot a few that were having some issues, at our campus, with what was thought to be random shutdowns. These are Faculty/Staff machines.
Since time was at a premium, for me, I only spot-checked the batch of 7 and took peoples word for it. They have been following the discussions, after someone enlightened them to the discussion pages. I had one shut down on me after about 15 minutes of run time and it had hung up on a printer issue. I tried it again after letting it cool down, and it did the same thing after 30 minutes this time, and it was only when I went to do a test print – it hung again. There could have been others with this problem, but I didn’t have time to play around, and the others that I did test were a matter of fixing the user more than anything else.
I wiped them all clean, and reinstalled the OS X 10.4.7 from scratch, as well as Office 2004, and all of the Adobe software. The machine in question was used here for almost a week putting it through its paces without a single issue. I gave it and the others back to the users and everything was fine until a couple of days ago – she had had it for a week, and the shutdown trouble started again.
It turns out that some unauthorized software was installed; some printer drivers were installed for use at home, and some strange off the wall open source games. I blew it all away, again, and reinstalled as I did before and it’s working OK again. I did the same thing on another one that came back with more unauthorized stuff installed and other changes. It’s clean and working as normal, and all the other units are reporting OK, as I check on the folks every day.
I did do one other thing, I reseated the memory chips in all of them - and we bought the additional memory from Apple. They all have 1.256 Gig of Ram.
These were all bought in late July, but I didn’t look at the week they were built.
I do not work for Apple, I’m the Network Manager/Engineer for a large community college, and one of the few Mac users that have a fairly high level of hardware experience with regards to the Macs, as well as PeeCees, Solaris, HP-UX and so on and so forth.
It appears that bad software; drivers, programs, etc can kill the machine as well as hardware. My personal MacBooks have been working fine, so far and they have been hard at work every day for many hours a day with Parallels loaded so I can manage my Microsoft Active Directory – works great, too. I also have PeeCee notebooks and am perfectly happy with them, but I prefer a Mac and I don't want to lug around more than one notebook at a time. My other MacBook stays home for use there.
    Cheers……. ☺

I agree that it may be to soon to tell if the issue has gone away, and I hope it has. At the current time all of those MacBooks are up and running - I just called two of users that had the most trouble and they are happy campers, as they use them everyday for their classes, overhead projectors, Key Note presentations, email, and all the usual stuff.
On another note, and your timing is perfect, the Macbook that has been giving us the most trouble is back, with the same unauthorized software back on it. It was doing the random shut down thing until I removed all that software. As soon as I did that and turned it on, it started working again, and as of this point in time I'm writing this on it. I have been using the thing all morning for my daily routines without a glitch. I even installed Parallels on it and will install Win XP later.
I don't think heat is the issue, because when it's not behaving correctly, it shutdown within a minute or two. I have felt underneath and it is at room temperature. It is a lot warmer when I have it working, like right now writing this and burning a CD.
Am I satisfied that it's fixed for good - not a chance, I need to test further and pass this notebook around to my staff for a week. The Faculty member won't take it back as she is not happy, has no confidence in it and has decided that she wanted her desktop back.
What I have may not be the same thing as the other postings have eluded to, or maybe it is - who knows. I have 40 of these things, with 30 of them in a lab situation, and so far so good - not a glitch. We have Freeze-X on them so they can't install anything on them in the labs, so each time they reboot, they revert back to the way they were configured - works cool. I can't do that to the Faculty/Staff, much to my chagrin.
All of these machines are from the same time frame - bought at the same time, in otherwords.
I'll keep watching the saga unfold, and post if anything for sure comes along in the way of a fix, that I may get directly from Apple. They don't seem to know much about this issue, right now.
    Cheers ...............

  • Random Shutdown/Thermal Runaway

Unfortunately, the AppleCare Plan on my iMac G5 (iSight) expired a month ago. Or, to be a little more clear on the irony, a month before I started getting a repeat of a random shutdown issue that I had the machine in for about a year ago. These typically happen when my son is playing WoW or we are watching YouTube vids, movie previews, etc. or just plain using a lot of processing power.

Your power supply is failing, take it in and have it replaced, your symptoms are classic and point to thermal overload caused by the power supply failing.
You might try calling Apple Customer Relations at 800-767-2775 and see if you can talk them into paying for the repair. Be polite but firm and ask to be escalated to the next level.

  • Random Shutdowns and Logs

Like some others, I have started having random shutdowns and some high fan activity. So I can probably guess that it is the power supply.
However, in previous posts on this topic, some have suggested checking a couple of different acitivity logs that exist somewhere on everyone's Mac.
My question is...what logs might they be, and how does one find them?
    Thanks for any assistance....

    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Chuck--
But is there a log that would show me why the
    computer randomly shutdown?
Shutdowns and going to sleep are two different things. If your power supply is starting to fail, your computer will periodically just shutdown completely. Sometimes, the fans will run faster, but often, they won't. If this happens, you can find it out by looking at the system log right after you reboot, or by typing a command in the Terminal application. Terminal is found in your Utilities folder. You would just open it and type the following command, followed by the "enter" key:
<pre class="command">sudo dmesg | grep shutdown</pre>Unfortunately, those codes are not published anywhere. However, my iMac G5 has shut off a couple of times due to the UPS inexplicably draining its battery. The last time was Sunday night, and here's the code I get from that command (you'll have to type in your password when it asks):
<pre class="command">AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110</pre>I've also seen -118 and -122 as the error codes. I think the latter came when I had the same random shutdown problem. You can also find the same information in your system log, using the Console application. However, it's mixed in with a whole bunch of other stuff, so it's harder to find. You can use the little search window at the top right of the Console app to help you narrow it down. If your system has been on overnight since it last shut down, you may need to look at an older log, so look at the one marked system.log.0.gz for yesterday, and so on, where the larger the number in the name, the older it is.
The second problem is that the computer overheats and puts itself to sleep. This is, fortunately, easier to find in the logs. Once it cools down a bit and you can get it running again, use the Console application and see if you see lines much like this:
<pre class="command">May 28 10:49:08 localhost kernel: Thermal Manager: max temperature exceeded for 30 seconds, forcing system sleep
May 28 10:49:08 localhost kernel: SMUNeo2PlatformPlugin core dump:

If you see this error, the fans can't get enough cool air flowing through the interior of the computer. Some people have reported that they've had success in fixing it by carefully cleaning out the vent holes at the bottom of the iMac, so air flows freely again. They've reported that pet hair or dust can get in there and clog it up.
On the other hand, this log is from a replacement logic board on that iMac. When I showed the techs that log, they didn't even bother with any tests, other than look to see if the interior of the computer was dirty (it wasn't) before they decided to replace the logic board as a defective.
