IMac randomly wakes up to black screen

Ok, I suppose the title says it all, but here's more detail.
We have a mid-2010 iMac used as a family computer with 5 user accounts. 95% of the time there are only two users logged in (me and my wife). Over the past couple of months we've had a problem where sometimes waking the iMac up presents us with a black screen.
Now, when I say a black screen I don't mean a black screen as if it's switched off, I mean a screen where the iMac wakes up and the video card produces a 'black' screen. Sometimes you can see (and move) the mouse pointer around, but that's it - everything else is black. Nothing I try 'wakes' the computer up. Pressing keys on the keyboard does nothing, and trying to do a force quit via the Command+Option+ESC keyboard shortcut does nothing. The only way I've ever found I can wake the computer when this happens is to force a shutdown and reboot.
As for my troubleshooting, I've zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC. Neither solved the problem. I've also disconnected all Time Machine drives for a few weeks while troubleshooting (in case that was causing the problem) but to no avail. I've also ensured all software is up-to-date. There is no indication of a hard drive issue (and both Drive Utility and Scannerz report no problems). I've also replaced Keyboard and Mouse batteries, and have checked Energy Saver settings and tried different things (including having the computer set to never sleep). The screen saver is not activated. And I've checked the login items for both accounts and we each only have two items, neither of which could be the issue.
I am now 99% sure that this problem only occurs when multiple users are logged in. It does not seem to happen if I am the only one logged in. I haven't yet tested to see if it happens if only my wife is logged in, although that would be my next test.
We are running Mac OS X 10.9.5 and have 12GB of RAM installed.  40% of the space on the hard drive is still free. Also, I do have a portable USB3 hard drive connected 24/7 as my iTunes and iPhoto library disk (although I did disconnect that for a while and also only have iTunes or iPhoto running when I am using them).
This has been the setup for ages without a problem, so it seems to me that something 'new' is happening here. As far as I can tell, the only software my wife uses on the iMac which I don't is MS Outlook (although I've never had a problem with using that on my MacBook Pro, and she doesn't seem to have any issues with it herself on the iMac).
Any suggestions anyone? This is now happening regularly enough to be a nuisance!

Hi Linc
So, another week of troubleshooting hasn't got me too far, except that now I've confirmed that this can happen with only one user logged in, although it seems to take a lot longer before it does.
Anyway, I did try to follow the steps in those discussions you referred me to, but the instructions re starting my iMac in Safe Mode don't work for me. What I mean by this is that the computer starts to reboot in Safe Mode but after the progress bar finishes, I am always presented with my usual login screen. In other words, I never get a black screen with a cursor, but my menubar does have 'Safe Mode' displayed in red text on it.
I have also tried the Command-S startup combination to force a restart in single user mode and entered in the commands as described in the discussions. This works okay, but doesn't resolve my original 'black screen' problem.
So here I am seeking other suggestions?
Any help is most appreciated!
Joe.

After applying update my apple tv2 will randomly go to a black screen that lasts for a few seconds. When it gets back to normal after a few seconds it acts like the video never stopped since its farther along in the timeline. This happens with all video content wether its from Netflix or streaming from my iTunes library

You might try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for a 30 seconds. If that doesn't help try using another HDMI cable.

Try to start up in Safe Mode. It uses a "one size fits all" display mode, runs one pass of Disk Utility "Repair Disk" as it starts up, then loads with minimal extensions and presents a login screen (even if you normally auto-login). It takes five minutes or more.
If you get a picture, use System Preferences > Displays ... to change your screen resolution at least once.

  • How to fix Imac 8.1 on Windows black screen problem?

Firstly when I originally got this machine it seemed (about 4 years ago), sometimes had my Pc forget the keys shortcuts for the Mac)
Anyway over the last year I have the problem where I'd be in the middle of doing something on the Windows side then randomly go black. Strangely this doesn't effect the Mac side on my Boot Camp.
After some testing on the Windows side I noticed this screen doesn't force the black screen when I'm either watching a video using 'Media player' or playing a game like 'STO' or 'KOTOR'. Also I wouldn't mind the black screen if it was temp but the thing is it stays black until I hard-reset the Imac.
Anyway does anyone have any idea's on how to fix this? It's been a problem for the Windows side for a while, haven't had much luck trying to fix the issue so the video playing 'idea' was always a temp solution till I can find a way to fix the issue. (The problems exists on both Windows 7/8 but now using windows 8 again because had to replace my broken hard drive recently).

  • "Connection Lost" on boot + Wake from sleep black screen and racing fans

When my iMac boots, I receive a "Connection Lost" symbol indicating the Bluetooth Mouse, yet Bluetooth is not turned on. How do I get rid of this? I have been having the "wake from sleep" issue for the last few weeks (black screen, racing fans) and wonder if this is somehow related.
I have reset pram, nvram, trashed the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file, unplugged the computer, repaired permissions, etc. to no avail. I have to power down with the power button and reboot every time it goes to sleep. This is getting very annoying. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have a similar problem when I used a Kensington Turbo Mouse Pro (not wireless). The computer would wake from sleep in the wee hours on its own and in the morning it would be so hot I could fry and egg on it. The Mouse was obviously so sensitive that any slight vibration would trigger a signal to the computer and wake it up.
Also I got the connection lost message on startup even though Bluetooth was not turned on. I figured that for some reason the Turbo Mouse was not discovered in the startup process. When this happens the System gives a warning that since no mouse was connected, I would have no way to control the computer and it advised me to turn on a Bluetooth mouse. It would then search for one for a minute or two. I just unplugged the Kensington Mouse and plugged it back in and I would usually get a message informing me that a mouse had been detected and the startup process would continue.
As soon as I substituted a Mighty Mouse for the Kensington Mouse, everything has been just fine since. I also uninstalled the Kensington Mouseworks software and started using USB Overdrive which gives far more options and a far better Mouse feel than the Apple Mouse settings.

  • On wake from screensaver, black screen, but functional swipe?

Recently, when I return to my computer after the display has gone to sleep (or the screensaver has activated), my screen goes black. Sometimes I have the spinny beachball, but sometimes it's just a pointer. I do not suspect any high CPU usage since I do not hear my fan. The strange thing is, if I use my 4-finger gesture to switch between spaces and full-screen apps, I can see my applications until the sliding animation finishes, at which point it returns to black. Once, when I caught it just right (during/after the animation), I got a dialog box to appear ("are you sure you want to close all tabs" or something similar) at which point I could use my computer again, until I clicked the "OK" button, which made it go back to the black screen. The only way I've been able to make it go away permanently is to hold down the power button to force a shut-down and reboot.
Recent updates that I can think of:
osx system update (I have 10.7.3 now)
Canon printer driver update (MP620B, driver version 10.51.2.0)
    Google Chrome 17.0.963.56
Non-obvious software that I frequently use (If you have the same problem, do you see any patterns?):
    PandoraJam Version 2.0 (579)
    Cyberduck 4.2.1 (9350)
    Textwrangler 3.5.3 (2890)
    Parallels Desktop 7.0.14922
    Adium 1.4.4
    Skype 2.8.0.866
Any help or things to try would be appreciated, I lose work every time I have to force-restart...
    Thanks,

    Update
I thought I would try something that has been used in many trouble shooting situations where there might be a hardware or software problem with the computer. Creating a new user account. While I do have another account to sign into on this computer. I chose to simply "log out" and let the computer go to sleep and later see if it wakes up. Sure enough it does wake up. And acts normally. I'm not sure if logging out is the same as another user account.
What if there is something in my main account causing the "wake from sleep" problem. Outside of "permissions" and "running scripts" to clean up accounting. What can I use to trouble shoot which situation is causing this? I've used a couple of pref checkers but with no luck. Log doesn't show what happens while computer is a sleep. Only reports time it went to sleep. And nothing about trouble waking up. I have seen a lot of wrong permissions in cups iofn the reports. And there are not fixed when trying to repair. Especially, in the Colorsync first aid.
Any advice? Or should I wait for 10.5.6 to see if it corrects my problem before I reinstall software?

P.S.-the only software I have installed with nightly builds is the WebKit for Safari. It is much faster than Safari. Not sure why Safari is slugging/slowing it.

  • Imac g4 won't boot; black screen

    Hi,
I have a question about a friend's imac g4 (1.25 gz). When I press the power button I can hear the startup chime, but the screen stays black. At first I thought it was the display, so I started up in target disk mode; however, the hard drive would only show up in disk utility on the host computer. When I tried to verify and repair the disk I got an error. Here is a screen shot of what it said.
    http://img812.imageshack.us/i/diskerror.png/
Was this error because disk utility said the hard drive wasn't mounted?
The imac's CD drive doesn't work, so I tried to use an external CD drive to boot from the install disk, but it didn't come up with the boot options when I held down the option key--just a black screen. If the hard drive was bad, would it cause a black screen?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

Keep in mind that you have to repair a drive with a Disk Utility version that is the same OS as the one you are trying to repair. Example, 10.5's Disk Repair on a 10.5 system. Otherwise you will get erroneous errors. If you did that, read on.

No, it said Disk Utility's Disk Repair couldn't fix it. It may be so damaged that it will not mount.
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility to repair it.
I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy.
It also has File System repair now and hard drive S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics.
Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way. But sometimes a badly damaged system can be deemed unrepairable by the installed version, but if booted and repaired from the DW disk it may be repairable. This has happened to me.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand. It has repaired every little and big issue I have ever had with my three Macs.
If your friend has a good backup, hopefully a clone of your system before you had issues, an Erase and Install may also rid you of this issue. But, beware! You will lose everything on the drive with this procedure. Let us know if you need help with that!
    Good Luck! DALE

  • Imac start up goes to black screen with white writing

My imac on start up comes up with a black screen which has a lot of white writing on it. The mac then stops on this screen and to does nothing else. To re start the computer I have to un plug it. After doing this it will then work fine. this scenario happens about once a month.

  • Wake from sleep black screen.

Since the last "Security update" install my iMac G5 has a problem when I try to wake up. The sleeping light goes off but the screen remains black. I tried holding the power button to reboot. But, it doesn't work. I have to unplug the iMac to reboot. I unchecked the "put computer to sleep when possible" option. Ran permissions repair and daily, weekly and monthly scripts. And still problem. I use Time machine but only when I back up. If I do restore to last save. Will my current data be wiped?

  • 2010 iMac 27 Inch flicker and black screen, not solved by firmware updates

Hi all, I hope someone can help me. I've got a 27 inch 2010 imac that has started to flicker black, and sometimes turn completely black. When this happens the only thing I can do to remedy the issue is to put the computer to sleep and wake it again with the power button on the back. I have tried using the 2009 firmware fixes floating around on the net but to no success, and having seen youtube videos of other people's flicker issues that were fixed by this, and as far as I can see it isn't the same issue. The whole screen flickers, not just a horizontal band.
I have no secondary monitors plugged in, and my only peripheral items are external hard drives. The issue still happens regardless as to what's plugged in.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm awaiting a call from apple support, but they have had me in a queue for a week so I thought it prudent to shop around for help.
    Cheers
    Simon

Here are other links to try: Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • IMac switched on today with Black screen & Cursor!

My daughter used her iMac last night 24/05/14 and when it was turned on today, it booted, screen went black and the cursor was visable.
I have tried safe mode but it does exactly the same..  We can not back up the data but she has lots on the hard drive?
If I reinstall using the original discs, will it give me the option to keep this partition and install on a new one so I can access the data later?

Ok, riddle solved: multiple hardware failure. It couldn't be fixed, so apple called immediatly and offered a new imac, new model as well, so I'm happy (if the new one works ). Must have been quite a tricky case, but I can't complain as i got a really good support during the time.
Hopefully the new one will arrive within the next week.

  • IPhone 3GS freezes randomly and left with black screen with stripes

    Hi
Have an iPhone 3GS currently running on ios 6.
It was freezing a few times a day (or more) while under ios 4 so I upgraded and did a full clean restore and have only downloadded a few apps since.
But the issue still happens.  I have lots of battery life and I can be playing a game (without wifi), or web browsing, or downloading something from iTunesU and it just decides to stop working - although it hasn't happened while on a call if that helps.  Screen goes black and usually has stripes on it.  Resetting doesn't work, although I try, but have found if left alone for 20 mins I can then restart it again.  I have no apps running in the background, and have follwoed the usual steps to get it started again.  Very annoying and neither a clean restore nor software upgrade has fixed the problem.
Any ideas on what I can do - or if this is a hardware problem??
thanks in  advance for any help.

I am not sure what you mean by "white strips" but have you tried to pull the firmware file and place it in DFU Mode and restore as new?
Skip Step #2 in this article, TS1813 - Support - Apple and change all the word "iPod" to "iPhone" then use this, iClarified - iPhone - How to Put an iPhone Into DFU Mode to place in DFU Mode. If this does not fix it, the iOS needs to be serviced.
