Imac reads blanks cd-r but not dvd-r

I have a problem with my cd/dvd writer.  It reads all types of media and burns CD-r's but when I try to burn a DVD-r, it won't recognize a disc in the drive.  It used to come up with a window stating a blank disc has been inserted, what would you like to do, but now it trys to read it and ejects it straight away.  I tried a blank CD-r and this worked perfectly ok.  I tried to play a DVD movie, and it plays ok.  I bought a CD/DVD cleaner and cleaned the drive, but this didn't help.  Anybody got any suggestions as it has my head done in now.

Hi borgeano.  Thanks for trying to help me.  This is the info on my superdive.  Like I said, the DVD drive will read dvd's but for some reason it won't write them or read blank discs.  I though I had cracked it when I reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but that didn't work.  Regards, CRaig

  • Superdrive will read Tiger Install Disc, but not DVD's

    I recently had my hard drive crash, so I installed a new one because I didn't have time to wait. The installation went fine, but now when I try to install Leopard, it won't read any DVD's, so I had to install TIger back on my Macbook. Are there any reasons that when I installed a fresh new hard drive that would make my superdrive need some other update or something, because it won't read DVD's?
    Thanks

    Hello smp450!
    No, the new HD only needed to be reformatted for your Mac. Your original grey-label Tiger Install Discs are also DVDs, same as Leopard.
    You may have missed the answer you received from Smokerz in your previous thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6686146#6686146
    Now that you've installed the original Tiger OS onto your new HD, are you able to use the Leopard DVD to upgrade? If so, then there is no longer a problem, right? If there is still a problem, where did you purchase the Leopard DVD?

  • DVD Drive issues, plays CDs but not DVD data or regular - Satellite (unknown series type)

    I tried to update the firmware but ran into some strange issues. First of all according to google, the drive is manufactured by Panasonic. Toshiba doesn't make their own drives? For this reason I wonder if it is improperly detecting the drive make/model.
    Anyways I downloaded the firmware update for it, version 1.03. It is a MAT**bleep**A UJDA760 (going from memory, model may be slightly diff like UDJA). When I run the firmware update it doesn't detect the drive at all and says it is for a THINKPAD?? Weird...
    Also, if you have a link to a guide for removing this drive I would appreciate it. I want to verify that windows is detecting the model/maker correctly. It is not one of the simple hotswap types, it looks like I have to remove at least the entire bottom of the laptop.
    I am working on this for a client, I do tech repair on craigslist but my laptop hardware expertise is limited most of my experience is with desktops.

    Typically if the optical drive can read CDs but not DVDs (or vice versa), there has been a hardware failure of the DVD or CD circuitry.  Drivers/firmware aren't going to solve the problem, only replacement of the drive.

  • CDs work but not DVDs "device failed to calibrate laser power level for med

    Hi
    I've been having a problem with my disc drive.
    I can burn CDs but not DVDs. Have OS 10.5.6.
    While trying to burn an error message comes up saying
    "This disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media?
    I tried to go into Apps - Utilities - Disk utilities and repair, but this message still shows up and refuses to burn anything even in Toast.
    Please help. Any advice would be valuable. Thanks.

    Thanks for the advice. I'm going to try the brands you suggested.
    I don't think the drive may be dirty, because wouldn't the CDs not work as well?
    Not necessarily. Different lasers, different power levels, etc.
    It's really a dual drive: CD and DVD. Almost two separate devices with a common motor and platen,etc.
    You can get a cleaning CD from RadioShack and elsewhere. Get the dry one with the small brushes. Works fine on everything but a notebook.

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

    I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    MBP refers to Macbook Pro
    Do the DVD spit out right away? (indicates a bad loader mech)
    OR do the DVD spit out after several seconds (indicates a dirty laser diode lens) ?

    My mini plays cds but not dvds.  Wouldn't this indicate a software, not hardware problem?

    Not necessarily, the drive uses a different laser to read DVDs.

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

    My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
    I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
    I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
    Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

  • How can I change the default pdf reader from the installed (but not yet registered) Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to Adobe Reader XI?

    How can I change the default pdf reader from the installed (but not yet registered) Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to Adobe Reader XI? I'm having some hiccups getting Adobe to register the software, but since I set it as the default .pdf reader during setup, things try (and fail) to open in the as yet unregistered software. How can I change it temporariiy to the Acrobat Reader XI that I have installed?

    Anubha,
    It worked! Thank you so much.
    I'd opened file with the 'Open with' feature then clicking Adobe Reader,
    but that didn't do it. When I used 'Open with', then 'Choose default
    program...', it worked like a charm.
    Again, thank you!

  • Read keywords from file but not develop settings?

    Is there any way to read IPTC Core metadata, but not develop settings, from a file? I'm still figuring out my Lightroom workflow and made some errors that I'd like to recover from. Here's the situation:
    In Lightroom 2.x I selected images, gave them star ratings, and made initial Develop module adjustments. I did NOT write the metadata back to the files (my mistake). Later, my keywording assistant opened the files in another program (Breeze Browser) and added extensive keywords using a controlled vocabulary that works very well and very fast in Breeze. Now I have extensive caption and keyword data in the XMP sidecars, but develop settings in Lightroom's database. I need to merge them.
    The slow and tedious workaround in Lightroom is to select the photo, copy the develop settings, read the metadata from the file, then paste the develop settings back in. It works, but is repetative and slow. There's not even a keyboard shortcut for reading metadata. The other tedious workaround is to export the keywords to a text file (using Breeze) and copy & paste them into Lightroom's keywords field. But that's even slower.
    Is there a way to write only the develop settings to the files?
    Any other suggestions on how to proceed? I have several hundred images that need to be fixed.
    In the future, I know I need to write the metadata to the files after making any adjustments in Lightroom so the data travels with the files themselves and isn't just in Lightroom's database.

    Ok, thanks for the reply.
    I feel a bit ashamed now, because my topic title contains the function i needed...
    So, assuming that i would have
    String content = "458,304,0,345,432";i could split this and put this in an array string using a code like
    String[] arry = null;
    array = content.split("\\.");I haven't tested the code yet, cause i'll go to bed soon, but will this split all at once and put it in the array or do i have to create a loop or something ?
    And is it possible to put number one using split in the array[x][v] on the x location and the others at the [v] location ? (the first number of each five has to be added to [x] and the other 4 to [v] )
    Again thanks for your reply, cause im a bit further this way in accomplishing what i want to reach :)

  • Cddvdw ts-l633 reading cd but not dvd

    after hard drive crash, installed new hard drive. Installed windows 7 home premium. HP cddvdw ts-l633n disk drive will read a cd but not a dvd rw

    Optical drives fail that way. There are multiple lasers for multiple functions and one laser can go bad while the others still work. Other than changing the drive, about all you can do is try a DVD laser lens cleaner disk and see if maybe it is just dirt on the lens. If you want to install a replacement drive it is very easy and not very expensive. Post back and we can find the instructions and a good drive at a good price.

  • Projector sees desktop, but not DVD playing

    20" Intel-based iMac running OS X 10.5.8. Sony projector sees my desktop image, but not any of my icons on my desktop. Runs "POWERPOINT" successfully, but if I use "DVD Player" - the DVD's playing on my computer screen, but still only see desktop image on projector screen.???

    It sounds like the system is in extended desktop mode. If you want the projector to show the same image as on your primary display, you need to turn on "Mirror Displays" on the Arrangement tab of the Displays system preference.
    Hope this helps.

  • Designer 7.0  form working with Reader 7.0.5 but not Reader 7.0.8

    Hello everyone,
    I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with a formed created using Designer 7.0 that was working with Reader 7.0.5 but no longer functions with Reader 7.0.8?
    The form consists of a numeric textbox N1 and 2 checkboxes C1[0] and C1[1].
    All code is done using FormCalc.
    Here is the situation: if the number in the numeric box is blank or not greater then zero, then neither check box can be checked. Both check boxes can not be checked at the same time. If the value in the numeric box is greater then zero, the checkboxes may or may not be checked (again both can not be checked at the same time).
    N1 has code the following code in its exit event:
    if (($.isNull) or ($.rawValue le 0)) then
    C1[0].rawValue = 0 //if not positive value, checkboxes must be blank
    C1[1].rawValue = 0
    endif
    C1[0] has the following code in its click and exit event
    if (C1[0].rawValue == 1) then
    C1[1].rawValue = 0 //C1[0] and C1[1] can not both be checked
    endif
    if ((N1.isNull) or (N1.rawValue le 0)) then
    $.rawValue = 0 //uncheck if N1 is not positive
    endif
    C1[1] has the following code in its click and exit event
    if (C1[1].rawValue == 1) then
    C1[0].rawValue = 0 //C1[0] and C1[1] can not both be checked
    endif
    if ((N1.isNull) or (N1.rawValue le 0)) then
    C1[1].rawValue = 0 //uncheck if N1 is not positive
    endif
    The above code worked exactly as described when the form was used in Reader 7.0.5.
    Under Reader 7.0.8 the following happens:
    if N1 is blank or less then or equal to zero, both checkboxes can be checked at the same time (this should not happen at all) but neither can be unchecked
    if N1 is positive the code (and checkboxes) function as described.
    I am not sure if this is a Designer issue or a Professional/Reader issue, so I am posting this here as well as in the other 2 spots.
    Any help is greatly appreciated,
    Ben

    Chris,
    Thank you for the sample you provided. First, I must apologize for not mentioning that there was additional code in the Click event. I thought I had removed it from my form, but apparently I had not.
    I have compare the sample you provided to my form. I noticed several differences between them. First was that you used Designer 7.1 to create your sample, whereas I used Designer 7.0. I do not believe that this will have an impact, although it is possible. Also, in your sample, then click and exit events both need to contain the same "check" code. Your sample has one IF statement in the click event and one IF statement in the exit event. To match my form code, the Click and Exit events together need to contain both IF statements. My form originally contained the code in the Change event also.
    i.e. C1[0] has the following code in both its Click, Exit and Change events
    if (C1[0].rawValue == 1) then
    C1[1].rawValue = 0 //C1[0] and C1[1] can not both be checked
    endif
    if ((N1.isNull) or (N1.rawValue le 0)) then
    $.rawValue = 0 //uncheck if N1 is not positive
    endif
    and similarly for C1[1].
    Based off your sample, I did some more digging and found that the problem is caused by the Change event for the checkboxes. I have removed the code from the Change event and now the form works as desired.
    So, if the Change event has NO code, and if the Click and Exit events for the checkboxes have both IF statements the overall behavior (as specified earlier) is identical (and what I am looking for) for both Reader 7.0.5 and 7.0.8.
    Now, if I add the IF statements to the Change event (without removing them from Click and Exit), the behavior in Reader 7.0.5 does not change (works as specified). In Reader 7.0.8, the checkboxes can not be unchecked if N1 is blank.
    So my questions now become:
    1) What has actually changed between Reader 7.0.5 and 7.0.8 (i.e. more detailed description than the generic release notes)?
    2) Which one actually exhibits the correct behavior?
    3) If this is a change to the event model, is this documented anywhere?
    Thanks again,
    Ben

    Thank you from now..

    Sorry but your posting does not give us enough info for better problem understanding. Which DVDs you mean? Are you writing about original DVD movies or some self created movies, copies or what?
    Please test it with different content (movies, saved files and so on) and let us know what happen exactly.

  • I burned home movie in idvd on 2010 iMac and plays fine there but not on 2008 macbook pro. someone mentioned vlc and codex needs?

    I created a movie in imovie and burned it to -R disk on my 2010 imac. It plays well there. But when I tried to play it in my 2008 macbook pro it would not play. what I got was two folder icons that said audio and visual and when i clicked on those it brought up several lines I couldn't understand. I did get the audio but not the video.
    Apple said the Pro was beyond applecare which I knew but I thought it was iLife issue. They said it was not---that it was a Pro issue. I heard something about needing download of VLC and something about a codex. Not having much of an idea of what I was doing I downloaded a VLC thing and the disk played audio and video. Once. Today it will not play. So that is where I am stuck. Can anyone help please?

    Hi
    Does the DVD play on a standard DVD-player ?
    If so - then the Pro doesn't need anything. Most probably the problem is due to
    • Cheap brand of DVD used - Memorex and NoName known problem makers - I use Verbatim (only)
    • Burn Speed not set down - I do to x2 - and to select BEST is not a good choice at all as this will be same as Highest = Lot's of burn errors
    If DVD plays OK on the other Mac - make a Copy BY USING Disk Util tool and do not forget to set down the Burn Speed !
