IMac recognizes only 256 MB of available 512 MB and freezes

This problem is driving me crazy, I simply can not see any reason for it:
After installing user slot 512 MB memory, my iMac recognizes only 256 MB right (PC133-333), runs for the first time, but after shutdown, it beeps three times and won't start any more.
I have installed in the meantime four different kinds of memory, all of them of the genuine Mac-reseller - so I guess the memory must be OK. Some of them wont work at all, some were shown only as 256 MB (the half).
Couple of weeks before I've installed 512 MB (also 100% garanted iMac-compatible) factory slot memory and this works fine.
Now:
Have I messed up some things by installing the factory slot memory?
What these three beeps mean?
How can it be that iMac recognizes the half memory? If the memory is not right, none should be recognized.
Why did it start for the first time, worked fine, but after the shutdown wont start? Any explanation?
Thanks in advance!

i think you posted to the wrong forum, if your imac info is right, about the kind of imac you are using, then you are asking in the wrong area...
; ^]
if you are having a lot of issues with memory modules, have you been able to run any of the common utilites on them to verify their status?
do you have any OEM ram, that came with the machine when you bought it?
does the same problem happen with that ram? if true, then you may need to have the machine looked at in a shop.
if your machine is ok with the OEM ram, then find a different reseller. also, i hope there wasn't any static discharge when you went throught the ram installation process.
where, exactly are you getting the data from, about the ram module capacities?
the about box? or system profiler?
and you are positive about the ram specs for your machine vs. the ram you are trying to use?
what is the age of your machine? have there been any other user modifications?
any additional periferals?

  • IMac recognizes iPod, but iTunes does not...and freezes.

    Hello.
When I connect my iPod Classic (I have reset it), the icon appears on my iMac, but it does not in iTunes, and iTunes immediately freezes, necessitating a force quit. iTunes is fine without the iPod connected.
I have upgraded iTunes from 9.2 to 10.0, but the problem remains. Can anyone offer help or suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hello Jerry,
Here is the Apple support document related to your issue.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1410
If no luck there, I would try reformatting the iPod via Disk Utility using the instructions in this article.

Other than that though, I don't have too much for suggestions. Best of luck.

  • Powerbook G4 only shows the apple logo on bootup and freezes.

My Powerbook G4 is about 7 years old and was in pretty good condition. It wasnt used every day and mainly used it for internet browing and photoshop work.
Recently my laptop stopped working. When I boot up the laptop it sounds like the CD drive is resetting when you first start it, but it then gets stuck on the apple logo with the grey screen. There is no sound at all - not even the apple 'dong' that it usually makes.
About 12 months ago my battery stopped working and I have been using the laptop off the mains. This has been working fine so not sure if this contributes to the problem?
I have left the laptop on for an hour to see if stall loading. But nothing happens.
I thought it may have been a hard drive failure. I did try to boot from an external hard drive- to no avail.
PLEASE can anyone offer any help or advice?

While it's stuck in the startup routine see if you can insert the install CD that came with the machine. Then restart and follow the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27150
If you can run the hardware test it may flag up a problem.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You — not the previous owner — must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
    1. You don't own another Mac.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the previous owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    2. You do own another Mac.
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
Once booted in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. You will need the Apple ID and password that you used to upgrade. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

  • Dual monitor setup on imac G5 only works in mirror mode

Hi, I have an iMac G5, 2Ghz. I have added a second monitor but when I go to Displays, I don't get an option to setup the monitors like I do on my Intel iMac. The G5 goes into mirror mode and displays the same image on both monitors. I would like to setup the second monitor to extend my desktop.
    Thanks!

    Your iMac is perfectly normal.
For a long time, Apple's "pro-grade" Macs like the PowerMac towers and the PowerBooks allowed extended desktop settings; the "consumer-grade" machines like the iBook, eMac and iMac had only video mirroring.
The better handling of external displays on iMacs did not start until the Intel Macs appeared.
There may be third-party software solutions available but I don't know where to point you

Since you don't understand how iOS works or what you are looking at, wouldn't it be better to leave it alone?
iOS like most modern operating systems manage memory dynamically.
Users mucking about just gums up the works.
Task killers were big on android because androids handling of resources was very bad.
Newer versions are better and they are not necessary, never were on iOS.

  • IMac will only restart or shutdown from power button.

My iMac will only restart or shutdown from the power button, it also will not logoff users. It starts ok, but only after a hard reboot?? I have repaired permisions and no change. I have a clone I can restore from but any ideas whats up here?
The only things that I know I have altered are deleting files saved during migration from Panther (months ago)and running Unbuntu Live CD.
    iMac G4 15 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 728ram

Are you booting into Ubuntu Linux? Most of us here wouldn't now anything to do with it. If the problem is occurring when booted into Mac OS X, it may be a sign of data corruption in the power management and user settings. Some corruption is easy to repair such as fixing the directory (which I'd only do after a clone). Here's how according to my FAQ:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
And I assume the issue is with your iMac G4.

"Where do I find my hundreds of dollars of downloads I have done since 2005?"
They will only be where you put them  If you are doing the very basics, then they will be on your computer and they will be in your backup copy of your computer.
The itunes store is not global at all, never has been. You cannot redownload your content from another country.  You can only use the countrys itunes store for the country that you are physically located.

Calendars, emails, contacts, are fine since files are small.  What I'm afraid of are the apps and photos.
    Any reply will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

With the exception of photo stream, iCloud doesn't sync your apps or photos between devices. You will continue to sync this content via iTunes in the same way as you do now.
Photo stream allows you to sync your most recent photos between all devices, you have the option to use photostream or not.

  • How do I add more memory to my Imac, I only have 1GB of memory and need 2GB to download Yosemite!

How do I add more memory to my Imac, I only have 1GB of memory and need 2GB to download Yosemite?

    Janet,
This is why the question rkaufmann87 asked about your model is so important:
[click chart to enlarge if needed]
The list covers the early iMacs with Intel processors that shipped with either OS 10.4 or 10.5 and have only two RAM slots. As you can see, some have limits to what version of OSX you can install. If the step rkaufmann requests does not narrow down your model, you can do one more thing.
While the "About this Mac" window is open, click the "More Info..." button at the bottom of that window to get this (assuming you are really running OS 10.5.8 as shown in your profile):
The code I've indicated with the red arrow corresponds to the codes in the second column on the chart. Post the code your computer reports--again don't post a serial number.
If your iMac shipped with only 1GB RAM, I fear it is one of the earliest models that cannot be upgraded all the way to Yosemite.

  • I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and I cant figure out how to access it. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sink my ipod with my account. How do I access my library?

I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and only contains "purchased" music. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sinc my ipod with my account. How do I access my entire library? Thanks

Unless you subscribe to Match, you will have to transfer your non-iTunes stuff from your old computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you want to copy non-iTunes music off of your iPod (eg, if your old computer doesn't exist), you'll need to use a third party program.  I don't know of any free ones anymore, but if you google, you can find several in the $19 range.

Just bought a new imac and tried to download all my music from my iPod but it only allow me to download purchased items and not the rest of stuff stored on a previous pc itunes folder. How do I get round this ?

The simplest way to transfer everything is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer.

  • I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lighroom 5 if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I want to upgrade to Lightroom 5, but I'm concerned about compatibility with my 2008 intel Core 2 Duo iMac with only 4G of Ram.  Will I be able to run Lightroom 5 okay if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion?  What will happen to the applications that aren't 64-bit compatible?  Also the Eye-one Display 2 colorimeter to calibrate the monitor will not run on Lion, so that will be an expensive upgrade to an i1DisplayPro. Is the upgrade important enough to offset the expense?  I have an Epson R2000 printer.  Will there be problems with the drivers if I upgrade to Lion?  It would be great to hear from other mac users who are also photographers and who print their own photos.

Before upgrading to Lion be sure to read this link:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
    Adobe lists these requirements:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html
Looking at http://www.everymac.com/ even the earliest 2008 iMac was fully 64 bit, even though Boot Camp doesn't support 64 bit Windows on that machine.

  • IMac G5 only starts up in Single-User Mode

I am using an iMac G5 with the lastest version of Tiger.
I was trying to make a my.cnf file for MySQL for it to start logging queries, however was having some trouble doing so. After restarting MySQL a few times it would not start up any more, so I tried restarting the computer.
After doing this Personal Web Sharing (httpd) would say that it was running although would not serve pages. So I tried restarting httpd which got it running properly, however I still had the same problem with MySQL, where it would not start running (the Preference pane would not respond when clicking "Start".)
So I tried restarting again. Now my iMac will only boot into single-user mode.
I read somewhere about modifying the boot-args, however have not had a chance to try it yet. I don't see why this would do anything however, as I'm not sure why that would have been changed in the first place?
Has anyone heard of a similar instance, which is possibly related to MySQL?
Thank you in advance for any help.

    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I solved this. I was able to boot up in verbose mode and note that a certain missing file '/etc/hostconfig' was mysteriously missing and causing an error at the boot-up. I was able to boot this mac up in Target Disk mode and copy the file into the /etc/ directory from a backup through another Mac and now it's working fine, thank G-d!
