IMac refuses to recognize USB with flash card

After I plugin my USB flash card holder, my iMac only occasionally recognizes it and then an error message comes up saying that the flash card was not properly ejected. The message disappears and so does my flash card! I may remove and reinsert it several different times and if it is recognized, I receive the same message.
To my knowledge, I have always ejected the flashcard properly.
How can i get my iMac to recognize the card so that I can use it?
Thanks for your help.
Vernon Snider

If you have not done so since noticing this problem, shut down (power off) the iMac, then start it back up. For hardware, just restarting is not the same thing.
Otherwise, you will have to rule out the possibilities.
(1) The card reader is bad. No way to test this other than to get a replacement.
(2) The flash card is bad. Try a different one to see if it works more reliably.
(3) The iMac's port is bad. If you have some other type of storage device, such as a USB external drive, try it on the same port.
(4) A problem with software (the system). Restart from your Mac OS X installation disc for the currently installed system; insert disc and start up with the C key held down. This will get you to Installer's first screen. Go up to the menu bar, and under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. Connect the USB card reader with flash card to one of the iMac's direct ports. Does it appear in the Disk Utility sidebar? Does it stay there, without the ejection error message appearing?

  • Falling in love this iMac G4 but being frustrated with AE card install

Hi all, I really DO hope to get some solutions from here about my iMac G4 20" 1.25ghz. I bought this about a week ago as used one, and how much I was excited to adopt this beautifully looking computer..
    To make it short, here is my problem;
Becasue this model(iMac G4 1.25ghz flat screen 20") can take Airport Extreme Card for wirelss networking, I bought an Airport Extreme Card and installed it properly which means I securely inserted the card itself and antenna jack too.
and I turned the computer on, the system profiler recognizes it as expected, but *there are no available wireless networks at all*. In my house, there are always several secured wireless networks available.
    - No signals at all on the menu bar no matter whether to turnthe Airport On or Off
    - "Airport is turned on but is not connected to a network"
SO, I googled this symtom and came up with some possible suggestions such as 'press hard to insert the card and antenna firmly' or 'cleaning the contact of the AE card' or 'try the other card', but none of them did work, still no luck. I tried two different Airport Extreme Card but still no use.
FYI, my router is not apple products but Blitzzz Wireless Router. I have another iMac G4 15"(800MHZ) which has Airport Card(not Extreme)installed, and this iMac G4 15"(800MHZ) picks up all available wireless networks and working just great. And also, my other Windows XP machine alsoworks fine.
According to my researchon the google, there have been some poeple withhaving similar issues and the solution was to connect the card cable fimrly', which is not my case because I triple checked it is securely inserted.
What should I do? Should I just go 'WIRED', 'giving up going wirelessly'?
    ANy thoughts or idea?
    appreciated any responses,

PS: When I opened the machine to see any loose cables, I saw two black cable coming down from the top part which has 'HH' marks on, and one with male type is connected to the other cable(female type) coming from the logic board bottom(pretty sure this is for Wireless connection)), and there is another one(looks like female type) which is not connected but sealed with tiny yellow tape(I googled this and got to know it is for Bluetooth setup at the factory).
After all, all with cable connections seem to be fine.

    Hi guys,
    here is the outcome so far but still no luck;
    1) re-installed Tiger from the scratch and didn't do any update, and the issue was still there(AE card detected but no wireless networks available)
    2) and then, did all updates, but still no luck
SO, the next thing I did was to check if the card itself is okay. I took the card and then inserted into my other mac(eMac G4 1.25ghz) and it worked like charm.
    then I re-installed the AE card into my iMac G4 20" 1.25ghz. This time, I wanted to check what might be wrong with this machine especially its wireless capability, because that way I can tell if there is any internal damaged or broken wireless cable. Hence the followings are what I did;
    1) System Preference -> Sharing -> Internet tab
    2) Checked the Airport then clicked Start.(now I am broadcasting internet sharing through the Airport Extreme Card, isn't it? because this machine also has ethernet connection, wired)
    3) Now, I went to upstairs where there is iMac G4 15"(800MHZ) equipped with Airport card to see whether it can connect to internet through the iMac G4 20"(1.25ghz).
    4) and you know what? actually it can detect the iMac G4 20"(1.25ghz) downstairs.
    5) Doesn't this mean that the wireless cable and the AE card itself on the iMac G4 20"(1.25ghz) are at least working???
Anyway, let me try one more with Leopard tomorrow and will let you guys know. If that doesn't even work under Leopard, I will give up the AE card and rather go for USB type wireless adapter as Ken suggested...
    Very frustrating...
many thanks and will post any update tomorrow...

  • NB305 - FN key no longer working with Flash Cards

I acquired my NB305 last week, and the FN key was working such that when you held it down the Flash Card appeared at the top of my screen.   However, that association has since ceased.   The FN does work for other purposes, and I turned on the feature with the Flash Cards to allow the mouse cursor to activate them.   so both the key itself and the Flash Cards are working, but not together.
I have searched high and low and I can find no way to reassociate the key and the Flash Cards.   This forum is my last hope for solving this riddle.  I did search the board, but I could find no reference to this problem.
Any assistance you may be able to provide is very much appreciated,
    -Neil

start menu> all programs> toshiba> utitilies>settings for flash cards. when the window comes up check the box for allow the mouse to bring up the cards. also make sure the box next to keep the cards on top of other windows so they alway show up where you can see them if you have other programs open. when you have problems bringing them up with the FN key try the same thing as before but instead of settings for flash cards select reset flash cards

  • IMac won't recognize usb 3 drive

    Hi all,
I just purchased a Seagate "GoFlex Desk" 2 TB External Drive.  It is recognized just fine in my MacBook Pro (Early 2011).  When I plug it into my Intel iMac (2009?), it is not recognized.  Both machines are running Lion.  The box says the disk is "USB 3.0 + USB 2.0".  I tried an iMac USB port that is functioning fine with another USB 2 drive.   Anyone have any ideas why this won't work?  Thanks in advance!
    Paul

Same here.  The Seagate 1TB 3.0 is not working properly with my Macbook Retina 2012.  It will sync once and back up in time machine but then gets spotty - showing up only after a restart, then eventually just won't even show up at all.  I've replaced it once through the on-line dealer, and had the same problem. The Retina has no problems reading anything - from old Western Digitals or my older Seagate 500 GB 2.0 from my iMac, but it looks like I'm going to have to find another brand if someone does not explain what is going on with the seagate line

  • TS2570 iMac won't boot, GSOD with Flashing Question Mark, safe/verbose mode not possible

I have an iMac 24", just over 2 years old running OS X v10.5 (Leopard). Mighty Mouse and bluetooth keyboard, no peripherals.
It slowed enormously over the last few weeks and has now ceased to boot.
On switching on I hear the chime (blank grey screen initially), the grey screen hangs for approx 30sec before the flashing folder/?mark icon appears.
    There is no further progress.
    Boot key combination results:
    Can reset NVRAM (Option-Command-P-R)
    Cannot boot to safe mode
    Cannot boot to startup manager
    Cannot boot to verbose mode
Cannot boot from target media (DVD etc)
    Cannot boot to AHT mode
Cannot boot to single user mode
I have followed the steps here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables - done - de-powered and rebooted. No difference.
Perform a Safe Boot- this does not work.  I am familiar with the boot combinations and timings. The safe boot leads to the same flashing folder/?mark icon. I have also tried verbose, single user, AHT and startup manager with the same result.
Reset the NVRAM / PRAM - done - this worked and kicks the system into an auto-reboot after 3-5 seconds. This also demonstrates the Keyboard is fine. The subsequent boot fails at the same point via normal, safe or verbose boot instructions.
Start from your Mac OS X Install disc; use Disk Utility – I never received an OSX install disk.  I have the original box with receipts etc, the only disk present is an unsealed version of iLife (yeah thanks Apple).  Where would I get one?
Check your cables and power source – done - all fine.
Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware – not applicable.
Perform an Archive and Install installation of Mac OS X – how would I do this when I cannot boot the device?
Perform an Erase and Install installation of Mac OS X as a last resort – how would I do this when I cannot boot the device?
To me the problem looks like a HDD failure.  I had windows (dual boot) professionally installed when I bought the iMac and since the Windows boot option is also not visible (startup manager itself does not work) I suspect the system can’t find bootable media because the HDD isn’t spinning.
An OS corruption would generally affect one or the other but presumably not both Operating Systems simultaneously.
It's hard to be certain, but I’m sure it used to make more noise.
I had a look into opening it up and troubleshooting the physical components but it’s hard to know where to start.  There are no obvious ways in and I’m not a professional so decided to post a question here rather than hack it open.
I'd be grateful if you could suggest next steps here, or is it time to go dig a hole in the garden?  I certainly expected more than 2yrs life from a £1200 unit.
    Many Thanks,
    Ryan

    Thanks for the response,
I bought the iMac new, 17th Jan 2010, all receipts intact but no extended warrenty. I declined the Applecare Plan for two reasons.
    (1) The sales rep seemed very confident in the product build. In fact the main justification of the price tag was the quality of the device. I'd also never had an apple device malfunction at that stage.
    (2) The incumbent EU regulations are quite fair in so much as legislation dictates electrical goods should be manufactured to function for a 'reasonable' lifetime. I would be morally uncomfortable paying for rights I theoretically already have.
I triple checked on the OS X disks you mentioned but no joy. Unusual as it may be, the box has not been used and it's contents reflect the day of purchase.
I'm happy to order the OS X v10.5 DVD and attempt a boot to the disk utility, I don't mind risking a few bucks on a potential fix.  I'll need to figure out where to order the disk, the call centre is closed ATM so watch this space.
What I'd really be interested in is; (a) is there a known diagnostic routine to determine the HDD functionality and (b) it is possible to replace/upgrade the HDD?  This for me is where the iMac loses ground against a conventional PC in terms of motherboard/component access. It's far superior from an asthaetics perspective while things are running smoothly and the OS is great but the first sign of a hardware malfunction and there seems little or no scope to self-medicate the device.
The disk has around 40-60 GB free space.
I don't have a second Mac, nor any friends or family with a Mac to 'borrow' for the disk utility test you mentioned. I'll hunt around this afternoon/week but my instinct tells me finding a locally accessable Mac running 3 yr old OS X might not be possible. Again, watch this space, I'll post any further developments.
In the meantime any further assistance or answers to the above questions on determining HDD status would be much appreciated. No progress has yet been made on the original issue of failing to boot.
    Many Thanks
    Ryan

  • IMac 9,1 Grey Screen with Flashing Question Mark (After HDD Replaced)

Hello, I have an iMac 9,1 and it recently booted with a grey screen and a flashing question mark. My HDD made a very loud ticking noise, which to my knowledge and people on Google, the HDD is basically dead. No big deal. I purchased and replaced the HDD myself, no more ticking but I still get the same screen. I put in my OSX installer DVD and it spits it back out. Tried holding C on start up, same thing. I tried reseting the PRAM and SMC, no luck. Can't boot into safe mode nor the start up manager. I just get a blank screen with the cursor that I can move around, that's it.
However, I was also to boot the Apple Hardware Test through the 2nd CD that came with my installer by holding D on start up. Ran the test, no hardware errors found. I've tried so many things such as the ones listed above, I tested the RAM as well and I'm stumped. Please help. Thanks.
Edit: I also tried booting into single user mode. That doesn't work either. I also tested the OSX installer in my MacBook to make sure the disc wasn't bad and it booted the disc no problem with the full installer.

    Linc Davis wrote:
I can boot into Target Disk mode and since my Macbook reads the OSX installer no problem, would I be able to install the OSX through Firewire?
That may work, if you have a retail (not a gray) installation disc, but the MB will then be set to boot from the iMac's drive. You'll need to reset the startup disk in the Startup Disk preference pane on the MB.
Thanks, I'll certainly give this a try. I'm really hoping this works out because I feel like I've tried everything and seeing no hardware errors makes me feel like I can do something on my end rather than dropping hundreds of dollars to get it fixed.

  • Bootcamp won't recognize USB with ISO, nor Windows Installer Disc

I have been wanting to install Windows on a seperate partition through Bootcamp. To do this i have both created an ISO, and have a Windows Installation disc. However, when i open bootcamp the following two problems occur:
The option to use an .iso on a USB, is faded and I am unable to use it.
I therefore choose to install via a disc, this goes fine right until the point where i choose partition size. Upon choosing the size i want to partition and clicking next, Bootcamp brings up an error saying that I must insert the windows installer disc and wait some seconds. However IT IS INSERTED! I have tried mounting the .iso as well, nothing seems to work.
Is there anyway to get bootcamp to partition without it having to find my windows installer disc? I am certain that there is nothing wrong with the windows iso, nor disc, so i really just want it to work...
    I am running Lion on a Macbook Pro 13 2011, Bootcamp 4.0

    Hey, finally found the solution.
The problem wasn't burn speed, but rather the OS i used to burn with, meaning that windows apparently wasn't even capable of burning a disc correctly. I transfered the ISO to my Macbook and mounted it, I then used disc utilities to burn it to a disc and VOILA! Everything worked smoothly!

  • Installing USB 2 flash card drivers manually

I have purchased a USB 2/Firewire 400 HDD that also has a flashcard reader/USB 2 Hub built into it. The driver installer, that installs the flashcard reader and drivers for an Alcor chipset dosn't work.
I need help in manually placing the drivers or maby some one can point me in the direction of a site that has an installer for Alcor drivers that works with Tiger?

  • IMac error message with 32Gb compact flash card from Nikon D4

    Hi
I have a iMac 2.8Gig core 2 duo running 10.7.4 - I get a error message (the disk inserted is not readable by this computer) when using 32gb compact flash cards from my Nikon D4, have tried bith Sandisk and Lexar cards same error message. However both cards work fine on my MacBook Pro and a Windows machine. If I format the 32Gig card in my Nikon D300 it is recognised on the iMac. So it appears to be the way the Nikon D4 formats the card that the iMac dosen't like, however as I said it's fine in the MacBook Pro.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On both Fomats, use Disk Utility on both the Volume & Partition & the blue Info icon to see what the differences are.

  • Boot Camp Assistant refuses to recognize my Windows 7 Installation Disc nor my USB

I have an iMac 20inch, early 2008 model. Back when I was running Leopard I installed Windows 7 with Boot Camp from a Windows 7 Installation ISO my friend had and I burnt it to a DVD and installed it without any problems. Later, after I got tried of windows, mostly because Windows really blows unless you want to game (which is what I was using it for), and I had contracted a virus, so I deleted Windows along with my partition after backing up any data that I though I might be able to use later. Now I am fully upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and I downloaded the Windows installation drivers and whatever else Boot Camp persuades you to download and now at the step where I choose how much of my hard drive I want to partition, after I click partition, Boot Camp refuses to recognize that my installation disc is there no matter what format I put it in. I have followed every instruction given to me and nothing has worked. I'm thinking about trying to just partition my hard drive in Disc Utilities and formatting the new partition and then copying the ISO to the partition and seeing if it'll boot up.
Anybody have any better ideas, or solutions?

Well I have tried downloaded a Windows 7 ISO, and tried mounting it on a USB flash drive and booting it from the USB, but that didn't work either (I heard that my version of OS X doesn't support that anymore because I already have an optical drive.)
BTW - what do you mean exactly by running disk utility on the DVD drive?

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.
