Imac rejects some dvds

For some reason my imac has started to reject dvds, pradominantly games.
For the most part, everything's fine, for example- it'll play lego starwars and a couple of other games
but spits out black and white 2, sims 3 and force unleashed.
I checked the requirements and everything should be fine, particuarly black and white 2 (but my imac apparently really hates that one)
Anyway, about the mac:
Mac os x
version 10.6.8
2.66 GHz intel core 2 duo
Mem 6GB 1067 MHz DDR3
video card mem- 256 MB
Chipset- NVDIA GeForce 94000
I can understand it refusing to work for games like the sims, which historically has issues with macs but some games should work fine just like the others.
If it's a problem with my disc drive, why is it so picky? Why hasn't it just flat out broke? And if this is the case, what would be the best way to resolve this issue without spending money I don't have?
It's an iMac 9,1 if that helps.
Cheers if anyone has any advice!

I have yeah, unfortunately it didn't work- gave my mac a whole go over in hopes it might solve the issue but it didn't.

  • Combo Drive rejecting some DVDs

My system: Mac Mini Core 2 Duo with Combo Drive.
Some DVDs have been working fine. I have checked around 10 or so earlier today which worked fine, although in a few cases I did hear particularly loud sounds coming from the drive, which I'm not used to hearing from an otherwise relatively quiet drive.
But I've just encountered a disk which the Mac ejects immediately. That isn't always the case -- sometimes it doesn't eject it, and it shows up as a blank recordable CD (yes, a CD. Go figure.) Just now I tried the same disk again, and this time it shows up in Finder as a DVD but DVD Player still refuses to play it. Which of these behaviours I get seems to be purely chance, more often than not it just gets ejected straight away.
I initially thought it might be a bad disk but on testing all subsequent disks from the same series, the same occurs. Interestingly the first of the four has no problems, and plays through as expected.
I have tested the same disks against my MacBook Pro, and verified that they not only play, but that there is no issue accessing any of the data on the disk -- I can copy the contents to a folder with no problems at all. Move the disk back to the Mini and bam, rejected again.
Just now (to gather more information, check more stuff) I put the first disk back in again and that worked as expected again. And now the second disk is recognised as what it is by Finder, although the DVD Player still claims it's an unsupported disk (go figure...)
Anyway I wanted to know if this behaviour had been seen by any other Combo Drive owners in the past, whether this commonly happens with certain DVDs, or whether it's a problem with the particular drive in my unit in which case I will get it fixed.
Or maybe the disks are faulty in some way which the MacBook Pro is more tolerant with? :-/

whether it's possible to upgrade to a SuperDrive
If your system doesn't have one, it's certainly possible to replace the internal with a superdrive, but to be honest I would not advise it. Having Apple do this would be expensive, though there are bare drives for the user to upgrade themselves at OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/superdrive/) amongst other places. However, these slot-loading burners are rather more fussy than external devices have tended to be, so it may be a better bet to simply add a Firewire external (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/VLFWU2D112/ for example)
Given your system is new, however, I'd have Apple check out the combo drive first anyway, but add an external DVD burner if in any doubt.

  • 2009 iMac rejects new DVD

This is the first time I've had this problem. I insert the DVD of a newly purchased TV series, the drive searches and carries on but then the discs (both discs of 2 disc set) eject.
Discs read OK in other machines - DVD player, Windows PC, etc.
    Any help appreciated!

    Hi Barry,
It frustrated me all weekend - trying to get Season 1 of Spirited onto my ipad! LOL
Lots of suggestions that some TV series on DVD were often problematic.
BUT - found a few suggestions online from people suggesting 'reset your PRAM' http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379 - which I did and now the imac is reading the DVDs just fine.
    Cheers,
    Carol.

  • IMAC REJECTING CD/DVD's

No matter which DVD/CD I insert, the drive runs for a few seconds and then ejects the disks. I have tried all types and formats the results are the same - ejected disks.

Thanks, Scott. I notice from one of your later replies that you recommend an external drive and I think that is the best option. I've only had the iMac about 18 months - these optical drives don't seem all that reliable.

  • Superdrive rejects some data DVDs

mackbook pro spits out some dvds a few moments after inserting.
I've had this macbook pro nearly a year and It has been a great machine. Just recently I have had problems reading some dvds. I thought this was very strange that some dvds work and others do not. The dvds that do not work are mostly backups of documents that were burned on this machine and have read fine before. These dvds work perfectly on any other mac or pc.
I went to the genius bar to have them take a look. With the inconsistency of some dvds working and others not he advised me to do an erase and install of tiger to eliminate any software issues that could be causing the problem. I did this and still spitting out dvds. Took it back a couple days later (when the next available appointment was). Luckily it was the same genius that I had worked with initially. He agreed to send it off for a replacement drive (3-5 working days). Only a few hours later I get a call... He explained that my third party second 1 gig ram stick was causing the problem. This ram was installed the day I bought the macbookpro and has worked perfectly ever since. With it removed and only the original 1 gig remaining the drive works perfectly. We thought maybe this second stick of ram had recently went bad.
I have heard of ram just going bad before so this seemed like a regular thing. I decided to take the 2 original sticks of ram out of my friends identical MBP and test to see if infact my second stick of ram was bad and causing the ejects. The test did not produce the result i was hoping for. I am convinced this machine does not read dvds with ANY types of ram totaling 2 gigs.
Does anybody have any ideas what could cause this? Sorry for the LONG post but I didn't know how else to describe my situation.

Any success on this issue? My 15" MBP (first generation, btw, over 1 year old) is doing the same thing... incredibly frustrating. I am currently trying the update to .11, maybe that will solve things *crosses fingers.* It has only recently developed this issue, and so far only three DVDs. But still, those were three dvds that I had read before on multiple occasions.

  • Can´t open some DVD´s in DVD player since I´ve got Lion-there was never such problem under snow Leopard

Can´t play some DVD´s in Apples DVD player, that run well onmy machine(s) before i`ve installed lion. Even if I say in system Preference "when inserting DVD-start DVD player, it starts, but can´t even select the DVD´s. They appear in finder, I can playém e.g. with VLC, but DVD player says "no DVD available"
( My OS is upgraded to 10.7.1)
    Can anyone fix it?

In my special case, it seems to be a slowly dying superdrive. Yesterday I´ve got a brand new DVD,which was not readable in my Imac. After some retries the drive simply ejected the disk.
`Cause I do not own a DVD-Player I went to a neighbour, where the dvd played fine. Now I realised after som tries, that my mac does not recognize any of my double density dvd´s. Single density works.
I think I will return my mac to the shop to get a new drive.

  • Some DVD's won't play on new MB

Got a new MB, 10.4, core 2 duo @ 2GH, 2GB RAM. Fully patched to the latest.
First DVD I put in produced a message saying the DVD region code needed to be changed. Never saw this on any player before but I changed it to region code 1 (or whatever Canada and the US is). The DVD played then played. The next DVD in the series (The DVD's were a TV show from netflix) would not be recognized. I then played the DVD with no problems on an older iBook G4 and our standalone DVD players. So, some DVD's will play and some will not be recognized. All DVD's are same format.
Any ideas before I call apple support would be appreciated.

    George
The problem you're experiencing is the main reason I dropped Netflix.
MANY of the Disks we received were unplayable on my better halfs iMac.
Several wouldn't play on ANY player in the house, due to scratches, chips or cracks.
Hopefully it's Netflix disks and not your player.

  • Won't burn DVDs, rejecting various DVDs, what to do?

Hi all, I've had my MBP for about a year and a half now, and as of late it's not let me burn DVDs, quite some time ago, and also rejects various DVDs (brand new ones, no scratches on some not copies, genuine DVDs) and I don't know why.
I do have an extended warranty of 3 years, what do I do?

Since I just burned half a dozen single and dual layer DVDs this week and I'm up to date with updates, I think we can scratch that idea. Though if the update didn't quite take on your computer...If you updated via the software updater you can always download the combo updater and apply it again.
Media can be an issue - I have DVDs that my old MacBook burned just fine but my MBP won't. (Different drive manufacturers.) Dirt and dust can also be an issue. I'm not a big fan of optical drive cleaners but if you are out of warranty it is worth a try - for that matter if you are still in warranty it is worth a try. The next step would be a call to Apple.

  • Some DVDs work

IDVD 4.01 would reject blank DVD's for no apparent reason or crash.
So I purchased and Installed iDVD 5.01.
Now it always writes a DVD, but NONE will play on the Mac that wrote them and SOME will play on our DVD player.
DVD's that do not work on player or Mac have same symptom: disk spins for awhile and then stops. Disk sits in either drive and nothing happens. Sometimes, the Mac will eject the disk (rare.)
Repaired permissions, made disk image, which does work. Have used 3 different brands of media.

    Mr Alexander,
    Welcome to the iDVD forum.......
As already asked, what brands have you tried?
And can you burn data DVDs and verify them??

  • My DVD drive not reading DVDs, but can read some DVDs with data on it. Device manager shows no error

My DVD drive not reading DVDs, but can read some DVDs with data on it. Device manager shows no errors.
    I tried to reinstall driver.
    I downloaded new codec
    I tried Microsoft FIX IT
     Nothing worked.
    Need some help.
    Thank you!!

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • Only reading some DVDs?

We have an old g4 imac that is reading/playing some DVD's but not others. Any idea why?
    Thanks!

A lttle slow with my comeback but reading through this may help solve your issue.
There could be several different issues that cause this problem.
Many of the softwares for CD and DVD burning have different functions and many don't have those functions at all.
Software for burning should have these features.
You have the option to create
    DATA
    AUDIO
    VIDEO-TS
Besides this the software should also give the option to create your project for
    PC ONLY
    MAC ONLY
    PC OR MAC Compatible
    Most good softwares will
    Read the project
    Compress (If need be)
    Write the project
    And last but not least
    VERIFY
Verify closses or finalizes the project.
If the project was burned on PC only that could be the problem,
If the project was burned on entry level software without these options, the settings could have been set wrong.
If the project was not Verfied that could also be the problem.
Lastly if the project was burned on media that your computer is not capable of reading.
I suggest you get a friend with a PC to try it out, and if he or she can play it on a PC then have them reburn the project with good Media, and Good Software.

  • Apple mini rejects blank dvd

Does anyone have a problem with the mini suddenly rejecting blank DVD's?

Any blank DVD? Any blank CD? Any blank DL DVD? minus and plus DVDs? RW too? or only one-burn media?
Give some details. In principle, especially if older, may show the beginning of its end, but may be just dirty, needs cleaning etc. There are many discussions on this topic.

  • Imac and Samsung DVD players

Don't know if this is the right forum.
Taked to tech support IMAC and APPLE TV.
Must have been a bad day for support. I asked her if Samsung and Imac had any support issues ( I am trying to build a new Home Theater.) She just kept asking me questions that put me into a corner each time I asked if I should buy a Samsung BD- C7500 DVD player to play with my IMAC 27" and Apple TV, and she would not give me a straight answer......
If anyone is in need of similar information, here is a tidbit I found on Amazon reviews section:
1.0 out of 5 stars A cautionary tale for Macintosh users, May 1, 2010
By xo1rider "Customer service critic" (Fremont, Ca) - See all my reviews
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung BD-C6500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
I suspect this is a fantastic, five star blu-ray player if you're a PC user but from my perspective as a Macintosh user I just wasted a couple hours of time that I'll never get back.
If I'd googled BD-C6500, Macintosh and Airport I could have saved my self a ton of frustration and time by ordering something else. Sure, you can spend some time figuring out a hack to make this thing work if you really have to, but I don't have to. There are other products out there that don't treat Mac users like red headed step-children.
Before I go any further let me say that as usual Amazon was fantastic when it came to the ordering process, the price, the packaging and delivery were just what you'd expect from Amazon, not to mention the ease of returns. That's why I buy from Amazon!
The initial set up went swimmingly until I came to the WiFi network hookup. Let me say first that I have a very strong WiFi network in my house using the ever reliable Apple Airport Extreme. In addition I have a wireless Cannon printer that set up on the first try so I'm no stranger to non-Apple wireless devices. When I got to the WiFi set up on the Samsung I hit a dead end. It was Friday night and Samsung customer support is a Monday through Friday business hour operation. That in it self is weak, they do have 24/7 online chat and I used that much to my frustration. The online chat is slow, I think the person on the other end must have had multiple chats going based on the response time to each of my entries.
The first Macintosh roadblock came when tech support wanted me to upgrade the firmware, since I could not connect to Samsung via the blu-ray player I needed to download a 67 MB file onto a USB flash drive, no problem I had the drive and I have a fast internet connection. Turns out I needed to format the USB device in Windows. O.K. so I've got an Intel Mac and a copy of Windows XP. I just fired up my trusty VMware fusion and took care of that little problem. At this point I was getting the idea that Samsung was not Mac friendly. Upgrading the firmware did not help and the support person on the chat could only tell me to phone back on Monday.
The Samsung has a feature called PC Share, allows you to stream from your computer to the blu-ray player. That was one of the reasons I choose this model - guess what? You've got to use Windows to utilize this feature. That sealed the deal for me, as soon as I finish this review I'm packing up the Samsung and shipping it back to Amazon. Combined with the lack of proper customer support, the anti-Macintosh attitude of Samsung and the warnings that I probably would not be able to play Avatar on this machine I've had enough.
*Here's an update a couple of hours later. I packed up the Samsung and sent ti back to Amazon, the did some more research and purchased an LG BD570. I will be out of town for a while so went to Best Buy and picked it up. Literally 15 minutes after walking in the front door the unit was linked to my WiFi network, five minutes later I was listening to Pandora Radio and a couple minutes later installed the latest firmware via the WiFi. Lesson learned, if you've got a Macintosh avoid Samsung.
Still don't have a definitive answer but maybe I'll get there.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
We are just end users here!
Quoting us long reviews is useless. How do you want to integrate the DVD Player in the mix?
Is there anything wrong with your iMacs built-in DVD player?
Are you able to rent via Apple Store and Netflix all the Movies you want?
Is the iMac in the same room as your TV?

  • IMac G5 and DVD Studio Pro

    Hi!
I`m gonna make some DVD`s for commersial use.
Wondering if an iMac G5 is enough, or should I go for the Power Mac? I don`t really need superfast rendering, etc. Just a Mac that is stabil.
Thinking about the 17 inch model, with 1,5 GB RAM.
Trying to cut corners on the budget
    Yours

One thing I would personaly check with the person with whom you plan to use as a duplicator. I have done work for a client and they have sent numerous DVDs to the replicator. The replicator was then able to use the DVD as a master. If you are curious the replicator that the client has been using is Allied Vaughn. They have been able to use the DVD master and replicate from it. From my experience for what it is worth the IMAC G5 should be fine. I use a Powerbook G4 and it works great. Hope this helps. Just to add the number of copies that Allied made was around 1,000.

  • After using iDVD, can my iMac burn a DVD ?

After using iDVD, can my iMac burn a DVD ?
I mean how do I know whether my disk drive can write/burn DVD ?
Mine is a 24" iMac bought some 5 months ago.
    Thanks

Assuming your mac has at least 25 GB's of available hard drive space on the boot volume and an S-Drive as opposed to a combo drive; the latter only reads dvd's while the former both reads and writes to dvd, then you should be able to, yes.
But follow the iMovie> iDvd Tutorial/s first.
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/tutorials/?cmp#idvd
Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.
