IMac reliability and security?

I am considering switching from PC to Mac and am on the brink of ordering a 20" iMac Core Duo. I have a couple of final issues I'd like some advice on:
1. I use my computer all day, every day, particularly streaming radio - what are the general impressions on the Intel Macs' reliability compared to other Mac models and PC's? I've seen posts where some iMacs have 'died' after 2-3 months of flawless use. Obviously these may be a very small minority - or a sign of a problem?
2. I haven't seen much reference to virus protection and firewalls with Macs. I know viruses are much less common with the Mac OS but I'm assuming people still use firewalls and anti-virus software with their Macs?
Thanks.

I just made the switch not to long ago myself. After having my mac out of the box for about 3 hours I was so impressed that I parted my PC out. So far, the ONLY problem I've had with my mac was caused by dual booting into WindowsXP. Killed my MBR. Go fig.

Since the MacOS is a Unix based platform, you honestly don't need to worry about bunkering down like a PC. A firewall is built into OSX, though.

Is there a way to view Flash videos on my iMac without downloading Adobe Flash Player? I'm concerned about performance and security with Adobe Flash Player.

If the video is only available in a format that requires Flash player : then no.
However, a great many can also be viewed in an HTML5 version, in which case http://hoyois.github.io/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/ or similar can be set up so that Flash never runs unless you specifically choose it to.

  • My iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when Iog off an account. I looked at the Console for a log but I am not sure what I am looking for. What is the best way to try to find what is causing this?

    Hello,
I have an issue where my iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when I log my wife's account off. I'd like to get it resolved as it is very annoying. We switch between accounts all the time and everytime it crashes I lose a bunch of info from my account. Can anyone help me understand how to fix this issue?
After the reboot a window tells me that my system has recovered from a seriour issue (sounds much like Window$ to me...) and a crash report is show:

  • IMac G5 and OS 10.4.6

Are there any obvious issues with the new update and an iMac G5?
I haven't seen many in this forum.
    PS My first post!!
    iMac G5 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Welcome!
No problems that I have read about.
I apologize in advance for the following epistle. All new posters asking about OS updates get it from me - LOL!
You can do yourself a big favor and follow a few steps to help cut down on many problems that may pop up during OS updates by following a few simple, but important steps.
First, back up data, preferably by cloning your internal drive to an external FireWire drive with a program like SuperDUper. This will allow you to have an exact and bootable copy of your internal HD to recover from in case an update goes wrong. I like SuperDuper because it allows you to do incremental clones after the first full clone, cutting the time down significantly.
Speaking of FireWire drives, if you do not have one - get one. Look for a drive with the Oxford 911 chipset. It is the most stable, most reliable, and is Mac bootable. Ovoid the more prolific "Prolific" chipset. It can be flaky with Macs.
After your clone the drive, test the clone. It is not much good if it doesn't work.
Download, but do not apply the combo updates, not the delta (incremental) updates offered through software update. Sometimes the deltas cause problems that are fixed by applying the combo over it. I skip to the combo and have never had a problem. Of course, I have broadband and these are larger files. If you have dial-up, your local Apple Store can burn it to CD for you.
Download a program like Cocktail and run all the scripts, especially repair permissions.
Unplug all USB and FireWire devices, except the keyboard and mouse.
    Apply the combo update.
    Run Cocktail again.
    Enjoy.
If the update does not work, you can always boot from the clone and then clone that back to your internal drive, putting you right back where you started. It is a very nice safety net. Fortunately, I have yet to have an OS update gop bad by following this procedure.

  • Imac problems and Apple Genius

    Hi All,
I posted a thread about my new iMac freezing and not responding and many of the people from the Apple discussion gave me great advice and support. Unfortunately, even though we repaired the permissions the computer froze up again and a call to Apple support had me doing a reinstall and archive to try and resolve the problem.
After talking to the Apple care tech, he said that it was not normal for the iMac to be freezing the way it was, I requested to I take the computer back to the Apple store that I bought it from. The tech connected me to the store and I made an appointment for Tue. at 10am.
After explaning to the Apple Genius what was going on he ran some diagnostics and told me that the hardware passed all the tests and as far as he could tell. When I questioned him as to why we were having so many problems and all the Mac owners I talked to on the discussion forum said this was very unusual and Macs are extremely reliable.
His reply was that the people on the forum didn't know what they were talking about because they are not Apple employees and didn't have any training. I was amazed by his comment and when I asked him if he was suggesting that it's common for Macs to freeze up and not work properly he started back peddling and said it was uncommon.
I left the computer for more extensive testing but I'm not at all impressed with the Apple Genius that I met and I'm even less confident that my iMac will be fixed properly. I've never had a computer that crapped out when it wasn't even two months old and after dealing with the Mac genius I'm less than pleased with my foray into the Apple computer experience.

    Hi Boece,
Here are the specs 20" iMac, Core 2 Dou proc 2.16 GHZ, 1 gig ram, 250 gig HDD, 8X Superdrive, Airport wireless, wireless keyboard and mouse, and I'm not sure what videocard is in it.
It has OS X 10.4.9, standard programs that are installed iLife, iWorks, Toast 8, and Mac Office, plus I just re-downloaded software updates from Apple due to the reinstall and archive.
As for how the computer was dealt with during the freezes and lockups my wife called Applecare and they walked her through powering down the computer via the on and off switch no other method would work.
As the computer was rebooting they had her hold down a key combination that included R and P and she verified and repaired the disk permissions. My wife asked if having to many programs opened could cause this because the computer was running very sluggish if she was working in word and opened Safari, he said no.
After repairing the permissions and checking the HDD my wife asked what permissions were and why they would do that he told her what they were, she still doesn't understand exactly what they are, he said he didn't know why but that it was uncommon on such a new Mac and said if it continued we might have to reinstall OS X.
The following two weeks we had occasional freezes ups and a reboot or force quit would normally resolve the issue but then this past Saturday the Mac locked up and again we could not login in shutdown, or restarted. She waited until I got home and then we again called Applecare and they had me put the OS install disk #1 and power down the system with the on off switch unplug the power cord plug it back in and then turn the system on holding down the C key. After the mouse and keyboard were recognized we walked through a couple of setup screens and then went to options and did a install and archive keeping the network settings.
While doing this I explained to the Applecare tech that we had been experiencing problems from the beginning and they were getting progressively worse and asked him if it would be possible to bring it in to the store for a full checkup I felt that something was definitely wrong with the Mac and wanted to resolve it quickly and get our Mac back up and running.
If you check my other posts you'll find another one about the Mac freezing and locking up which I posted after the first major problem. Dealing with and building Windows PC's I've found many times that forums and discussion groups are great places to research a problem because many times someone else has experienced the same or similar problems and a fix or work around can be found.
What I learned from this was that this is not a common problem and other users felt it "could be" a hardware or software issue but was most definitely not a normal thing for any Mac. I've also found that people in these forums are more inclined to give an unbiased and honest opinion based on "their real world use of the product" than someone who is involved in the business.
Being new Mac users we have very little "real world" experience with a Mac but according to the few people we know and those that responded on this forum our problems were not something that is to be expected from any Mac let alone a brand new one and as far as I'm concerned it is something that should be resolved swiftly and to our satisfaction. A brand new product that is not functioning properly is unacceptable no matter who makes it or what it is and the company should fix or replace it without question.
I have only been on this forum for a very short while but so far all the users have been helpful and encouraging and I'm hoping to learn from those who have much more experience than me with OS X and Apple computers in general. Unfortunately, my experience so far hasn't been quite what I'd hoped for with my iMac and my wife and I are concerned that this matter isn't being handled the way it should be so far and this is very disappointing to us given the excellent reputation that Apple has with many others.
    Thank You, Roger

  • Mac hangs after Safari 5.0.5 and Security 2011-02 Updates

I recently ran software update and installed Safari 5.0.5 and Security Update 2011-02 on an iMac with 10.6.7. After running the updates, I clicked on the Restart button and the Mac rebooted but then hung with the spinning gear (not spinning). I did three more force reboots all with the same result.
I booted with the 10.6 install DVD, ran disk utility, and repaired the disk (incorrect file count and directory count). Ran permissions repair - found and repaired permissions on Library/Shared (were set to 777 for some reason and not 775). It also reported an ACL found but not expected on Library/Shared.
Rebooted the system and it came up, but when it did the date was reset to 1 Jan 2001 and none of my preferred networks could be found. I manually joined my Airport Extreme and then the system hung again. Mouse worked but no keyboard input and mouse clicks were not responsive.
Forced reboot again. That is where I am now. I've managed to backup all my user data and cloned the HD to another disk, just in case. I haven't seen any reports of any other issues with these updates, so it seems I am alone or in the minority.
Has anyone else had issues with their system after updating Safari and applying the Security update?

Mmm, some similar issues here after the same update (though not quite the same). In my case the computer rebooted to the log-in screen after the update, but any attempt to log on with either of the accounts on the computer returned me to the same screen.
Booted from SL disk and repaired disk.  No errors were reported but DU indicated that it had "updated boot processes as required.
Then attempted to repair permissions. Permission repair proceeded very slowly and then appeared to hang altogether. I stopped the repair , quit the SL installer to reboot the machine. To my surprise it rebooted normally, to the default startup account.
I'm currently repairing permissions using the copy of DU on the HD. Still seems to be operating very slowly.
I'd suggest that anyone installing these updates should use DU (or another utility) to repair both the drive and permissions before they do so. This is always good practice, and I normally do it myself, but was in a bit of a rush this time.
If people didn't repair both the drive and permissions prior to the installation, I'd suggest they  do it now.

I have just got an iMac 21" and it continuously freezes when it goes to sleep and also when the internet is trying to load, i have tried three different browsers but it still does it (safari, google chrome and firefox), does anyone know what is wrong?

To fix the freezing when sleeping problem go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'Computer Sleep' to 'Never'. It seems there is a problem for some with Bluetooth failing to wake after sleep. This fixes it 100% for me and many others on here, until Apple issue a software update to address it.
Not sure what to suggest on the internet problem. I assume you are connected and receive and send emails OK.
Edit: To try to troubleshoot the internet issue maybe try turning the Firewall off: System Preferences>Security & Privacy>Firewall tab.

My Macbook Air does not pick up wifi from Airport but iMac, iPad and iPhone do. Help please.

Are you testing in the same room as the TC?
Power cycle the TC.. does it show up now?
Has it ever showed up .. ie is this a problem that just started from an existing setup, or has never worked?
Is the TC new? If old how old?
If you continue to have issues.. setup the TC from iMac and preferably using ethernet.
Change the wireless names to SMB compatible ones, short no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Use WPA2 Personal security only.
Then set the wireless channels manually.. try 11, 6, 1 for 2.4ghz and try 36 or 40 at 5ghz.
    Tell us how that goes.

  • Noisy imac G5 and CPU settings

    Ref- imac G5 2ghz, 10.5.6
    Hi All,
I just wanted to put forward the symptons of my imac G5. Due to noise I run the imac at the reduced CPU setting to avoid the noisy fans but lately it seems to have started getting louder and its a little bit annoying. I would love to run it at the highest CPU setting but the fans go mental but it does improve performance, I would like to think that I could be getting the full 2ghz power from the machine.
I have tried cleaning the machine inside and out and also reset the PRAM but still no joy. I wonder if anybody has any suggestions on this, I appreciate that this topic has come up in the past.
    Thanks

Have you made sure that the fans are dust free and securely screwed down?

    ls -l /var/run/lighttpd/
And how are you spawning the php instances? I don't see that in the daemons array anywhere.
EDIT: It looks like the info in that page is no longer using pre-spawned instances, but lighttpd adaptive-spawn. The documentation has been made inconsistent it looks like.
You will note that with pre-spawned information, the config looks different[1].
You need to do one or the other, not both (eg. choose adaptive-spawn, or pre-spawn..not both).

I have an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes.
All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem. The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it  just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
    Can anyone please help me.

    The mystery remains....
Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.
    Thanks
