IMac renumbering since using time machine

Since i have started using Time Machine i have been getting this message on a semi regular basis.
This computer’s local hostname “-My-iMac.local” is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to “My-iMac-2.local”.
At one statge it got upto 5 before i reset it back in system preferences, sharing, computer name, edit.
I do not want to keep reseitting it and really I have no idea what it is doing or why nor am I aware of what impact its having om my use of my apple products.
Whats happening and how do i stop / correct it.
Thanks.
G

This usually happens because you're connected to the same network with both Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Use one or the other.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

    Then repair the backup/TM drive.

  • Sync Problems since used time machine to restore macbook pro

    Hi
I had a macbook pro issues which to resolve Apple had me wipe clean my hard drive and reinstall snow leopard.
I then used time machine to reload everything.
Now I have a problem with BB DM mac.
My ical and address book are restored but when I go to syn my BB 9700 I get the following in reference to my calendar
The Previously selected items are no longer available
I am at a loss. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the BB DM and still the same. Can't sync
This is the response I got from Apple
If I understand you correctly the message you indicate is coming from the Blackberry Desktop Manager, not from Addressbook or iCal?
If that is the case you might find it advantageous to contact Blackberry as they would know how to troubleshoot their software.
I would appreciate any suggestions on how to proceed so I can do a sync.
    Thanks ahead
    Margie

Is the All Calendars radio button selected or Selected Calendars? I always leave the former selected as well as, under Advanced Settings, the Sync> All Events radio button. I'm hoping that the data that should be on your BB that, I assume, is not on your Mac will sync to your Mac.

  • HT201250 I have two users on my iMac  (2 accounts) using Time Machine how do both accounts bet backed up?

What makes you think that? Mine seems to back up all my accounts.

  • How do you use Time Machine with more then one mac

I just bought a new external hard drive and want to back up my iMac & MacBook Pro using Time Machine. But I do not want to use my airport network.
I will keep the hard drive connected to the iMac, but want to, as needed, plug my MacBook Pro into the Hard drive to back up.
Is this possible? Do I have first partition the new backup hard drive?
    Any help is appreciated... Jim

    Ok... I am back again.
I decided to plug my backup drive into the USB port on the Airport extreme.
On my Macbook Pro, which I connect wirelessly, I was able to start Time Machine... Time Machine saw the backup drive and did a backup.. Yes it took a long time Anyway all is cool with that.
My iMac is connected to the Airport Extreme by Ethernet. On the iMac when I started Time Machine, it does not see the backup hard drive. I can see and share the hard drive... works fine. But no luck with TM seeing the hard drive on the iMac.
Questions is will Time Machine work with a computer that is connected to airport extreme by ethernet. If yes how o you set it up and what might be wrong??
I might mention that the reason I have the iMac connected with an ethernet cable and not wirelessly is because the iMac does not stay connected well to the internet and when it is connected has a very slow connection. My MacBook Pro is all the way across the house and has a great connection.
I have guessed the slow connection was because the Airport Extreme sits right next to the iMac and maybe there is some kind of interference.
    Thanks.... any help is appreciated.

i upgraded my imac hard drive to a 2tb drive. how do i use time machine to get my computer back to normal?

Thank you. I followed the faq#14 (using setup wizard from the osx install disk). Everything went just as planned until I woke up this morning and noticed there was no progress on the "transferring documents" meter. It stopped about 1/4 of the way. I can hear the computer working and the bar is somewhat animated like it is advancing but it's not.
Should I cancel and restart or should I wait it out? It already been about 13 hours since I started the process. Do you think it is my time machine or my iMac? Maybe the time machine file is corrupt or something.
Anyway, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Using Time Machine to backup a iMac G5 and restore to an intel iMac

Is it possible to use Time Machine to backup my iMac G5 and restore my backup to a new intel iMac?
The reason being is that I my mother-in-law's company bought her a new intel Mac and she wants to trade with me since she only uses her Mac for e-mail, photos and accounting software.
I was thinking of making sure her data is preserved by using the migration assistant to transfer her data to my iMac G5 and then using my time machine backup to restore to her intel iMac. I have concerns about this method after reading about the intel/powerpc issues with time machine. I also have concerns that perhaps the version of MacOS 10.5 installed to my iMac G5 will not be optimized for intel.

Well, not entirely. You cannot install or restore a PPC version of OS X to an Intel Mac because the PPC system will not work on an Intel Mac. You can copy your personal files, most preference files, and third-party applications (although it would be preferable to update all PPC-only apps to universal binaries which perform better on Intel machines.
Another possible concern is if your mother's company is transferring the ownership to her or simply purchasing the unit for her to use. In the latter case the computer belongs to the company, not your mother. She cannot then give it to you because it isn't hers. This problem should be resolved beforehand because the company may one day want the computer back.

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

    Hi,
    Try Target Disk Mode
OS X Yosemite: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
    There is also Migration Assistant.

  • HT201250 What is Airport Utility and why do I need to access this in order to backup my iMac using Time Machine...PLEASE??

What is Airport Utility and why do I need to access Airport witeless devices in order to backup my iMac using Time Machine...HELP!!! PLEASE??

AirPort Utility is required to configure an Apple AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
Time Machine can use a Time Capsule or a locally connected volume. You only need to use AirPort Utility if you are using a Time Capsule.

  • I just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac that was previously running Snow Leopard. Bugt I found that some key applications no longer work, so I would like to go back to snow Leopard. I can't use time machine backups for this. what can I do?

I just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac. But In was dismayed to find that my Canon scanner software (Canoscan LIDE500F)no longer works. Nor do any of my MS offce applications. I tried to use time machine to reinstall Snow Leopard (my previous operating system), but unfortunately my time machine backups did not include system software. Also, the original system install disk that came with my iMac would not allow me to install Snow Leopard in place of Mountain Lion. I would appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to solve this problem.

The reason your Office doesn't work is because it is PowerPC code. If you will upgrade the 2004 Office to 2011 Office then that will work.
I don't understand how you managed to get your Time Machine backup to not backup the system.
Now if you still what to downgrade you will have to erase the disk and reinstall Snow Leopard. Most likely all of your application and then restore your data from Time Machine.
To me it sounds like it would be easier to upgrade your software and stay with Mountain Lion instead.

  • Using Time Machine HD, can I transfer applications to new iMac

I have been using time machine to an external drive for 3 years. I'm going to buy a new iMac in June. When I transfer data etc. using the TM external drive, will it transfer my applications? Many of my apps were downloaded and I don't have discs. Where can I get info on what will and won't transfer if needed.

Did you ask a sales person, or a Genius?
Even the Geniuses don't get a lot of training on such things, and/or may have misunderstood.
Your existing default and ILife Apple apps won't be transferred, unless you've moved them (bad idea).
Other apps you've bought from Apple, and 3rd-party apps will be transferred, but as noted, some "complex" apps may not have everything they need.
    See these Apple articles:
[How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413]. Note: there isn't a separate Apple article for Setup Assistant, but it's similar, and what you want to use, not Migration Assistant.
[Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1963?viewlocale=en_US] applies to both Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant.
The web page in my earlier post links to this one for details: [Using Setup Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/SetupAsst.html]. Note the screen shot where you can select or omit Applications.
