IMac restarting continuously
I have a 2009 Intel iMac 27" with Lion installed. Left it on Friday evening and it was ok. Got back to it Saturday morning and it had gone to sleep. Touched the track pad to turn it on and it showed the user log in. Logged in using my password and it logs in, but as soon as the screen and dock appears it immediately goes into the restart. This happens very quickly and there is no opportunity to break the cycle by opening anything up.
Any help very much appreciated with this one. I had thought of reinstalling the software, but the problem is my disk is Snow Leopard and it isn't a great disk (i.e. it's a little scratched) but more importantly I bought Lion on App Store, so I have no disk.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
My imac restarted but now it is taking forever
I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and my imac restarted after installing. I entered my password and now there is a progress bar that has moved halfway after over an hour. I tried restarting the computer but that did not help. Is it normal to take this long? My new laptop had no problems.
I cannot give any specs because I cannot bring that info up on the computer.
Thanks for any help.
CatherineTake each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. -
Spacebar freeze & IMac restart?
I was typing an email (Eudora) on my new, one month old intel iMac. Suddenly the spacebar wouldn't work (no space made when clicking on it). I hit the return key. The other keys worked. I tried the spacebar again. And again! Suddenly the computer restarted on its own. What the???? What happened?? Nothing else went out. I had Eudora open. TextEdit and Safari were running in the background. I ran Disk Utility & verified disk. Says all is fine. But if all were fine, why the sudden spacebar freeze and iMac restart?

Crashing, Restarting Continuously, Freezing...
I have the original iPhone, and ever since the last 2 software updates my phone has been uncontrollable (just updated to 3.0 and still awful).
Keeps freezing all the time, restarting with the apple screen, and then recently it's been restarting continuously without stopping. The screen will sometimes Flash a white line across the top (like a vintage television). Other times, it goes completely black when I take the phone away from my face as I go to end a call. I can't end the call and can't access anything.
Sometimes the screen freezes when I click on an icon, or bounces back to the icons screen (not always Home, just where I was previously) while I'm using any App.
I can hardly use the phone anymore, and it's out of warranty. I have had it for exactly 1 year now. Unfortunately there is no Apple store nearby, so I'm completely out of luck. And I can't even get a new iPhone, because AT&T wants to charge me $299 for the 3G. I am not technically eligible until 2010.
I'm going to write a letter to Apple soon, because this is ridiculous. I purchased the phone for $400 and only got a year out of it.
Sad...The only thing you can try to do is a complete restore, which will wipe out the whole phone and return it to factory settings. If a clean iPhone is still giving you the same problems then you most likely have a hardware problem - something inside the phone is not working properly.

IMac restarts more times, all alone
This morning my iMac restarted 4 times, all alone, 2 times simply listening to music, 2 times installing the Xcode update.
A little bit worried...If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

My iMac restarts a couple time a night. Any ideas what might be causing it? Thanks!

My iMac restarts repeadly and shows yellow ~ all over the screen
My iMac restarts itself over and over I believe it is a kernel panic. It shows yellow, blue, and green ~ on every startup. Are there commands in the (Command+S) that will help me. All keys don't work on startup. I cannot do anything on it beside access (Command+S) on accasions.
If it was just restarting, this may have been software but since there is visible screen distortion, im thinking this is most likely a logicboard on its way out. Definately take this to an apple store and have them diagnose and repair the machine.

After a hard restart on my bootcamp because windows ***** and freezes, I attempted logging on to my mac partition and it keeps restarting at the login screen. Checked discs and there are no errors. 27" iMac is only 3 years old. Any ideas?

IMac G5 continuously restarting
So I got up this morning to discover a very weird bug with my G5. When I first came into the room, the light was blinking in an irregular pattern. Clicking wouldn't make it respond and neither would the keyboard, so I shut it all down, pulled the power cord out and let it sit for about 30 minutes. I figured it was either the power or that it was overheating. After letting it rest for 30 minutes, I plugged it back in and booted it up. As soon as it got to the desktop, it abruptly went blank and restarted. It did this about 3-4 times before I finally stopped it and unplugged it again and let it rest.
Can someone tell me what the issue is or if I should just take it in? I hate to be without my g5 for who knows how long.Rick is right, it sounds like a classic case of Power Supply Unit failure. Is it a Rev A?
Don't take it in without calling Apple, if it is a Rev A, you can make the repairs yourself, they will send you the parts.
You might try and see if you can start up from the install disc, then you can make a backup/clone of your hard drive (I use SuperDuper!).
Do post back with results please,
Miriam -
IMac restarts itself during first startup of the day
iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
MacOS X 10.8.2
Over the last several days, on only the first startup of the day, my iMac, early in the startup process, has interrupted the startup by restarting, then continuing with a normal startup without further action on my part. Upon completion of the startup, and alert reports that "Your computer restarted because of a problem", and asks if I want to report the problem to Apple. The following is an example of the report:

Subsequent startups on the same day proceed without interruption and without a problem report, until the first startup of the next day. I normally shut down the computer over night. The iMac operates normally after any of these startups, interrupted or not. Apple Hardware Test reports no problems.
This behavior is annoying, but not very problematic so far. Does anyone have a likely explanation or suggested cure?BDAqua wrote:
Have you tried just sleeping it at night?
It appears to be graphic card related.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Thanks very much for answering.
Sleeping the iMac at night would work, I'm sure, since it's only on a cold restart that the unplanned restart occurs. Not as satisfying as curing the issue, though.
Apple Hardware Test reported nothing wrong with the graphic card, but the computer is not cold by the time the test is run, so I guess that could still be it.
I'm sure there is dust inside after three + years. Apple didn't really want me to open up my iMac, but this Core 2 Duo model can be opened by lifting off the glass with suction cups, I believe. Maybe I will do that and dust, and see if that helps. There might even be something I can reseat.
Also, I believe that on my next cold startup I will try single user mode and see if that prevents the restart.
Thanks for your suggestions. -
New iMac "restarted because of a problem"
Hello,
Today my brand new iMac (3,5 GHz Intel Core i7, 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB) froze for a few seconds, then restarted with the message "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." and showed "You shut down your computer because of a problem." upon startup.
I then googled for solutions to the problem and ran Apple Diagnostics as suggested somewhere, with no results. I also installed all the software updates.
After that I continued working and after a while (less than an hour) the same thing happened again!
I've included the report at the bottom.
At the moment of the crash I was running Adobe Photoshop CS6, Firefox 27.0 (Youtube) and timeEdition. (Which would have been no problem on my older late 2009 iMac with much lower specs.)
I'm aware that there are other discussions about similar problems, but none of them have been resolved. And sometimes people were able to tell possible causes from the crash reports, so hopefully someone can do the same with mine.
I'd greatly appreciate any help at all, since I use this machine for work.
(Just in case, one of the processes running must have been the latest Wacom tablet driver. Please don't tell me to uninstall it. Again, I need it for working.)
Thank you very, very much in advance!

1.0Thanks for your reply! I do not necessarily want to uninstall Procaster (it's for broadcasting on livestream.com), as it is a program that I frequently use and plan to use in the future. I've used it last week for several hours without problems, running at the same time as Photoshop and Firefox.
Can you see anything else that might be causing this? Could it be Firefox or a Firefox Add-On?
