None of the RAM you have is from the factory. If you didn't install it, the retailer did.
Remove two of the modules and test. Then swap modules and test again.

A Safe Mode boot might help ..
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
    See if the problem persists.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My imac restarted but now it is taking forever

I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and my imac restarted after installing. I entered my password and now there is a progress bar that has moved halfway after over an hour. I tried restarting the computer but that did not help. Is it normal to take this long? My new laptop had no problems.
I cannot give any specs because I cannot bring that info up on the computer.
    Thanks for any help.
    Catherine

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Spacebar freeze & IMac restart?

I was typing an email (Eudora) on my new, one month old intel iMac. Suddenly the spacebar wouldn't work (no space made when clicking on it). I hit the return key. The other keys worked. I tried the spacebar again. And again! Suddenly the computer restarted on its own. What the???? What happened?? Nothing else went out. I had Eudora open. TextEdit and Safari were running in the background. I ran Disk Utility & verified disk. Says all is fine. But if all were fine, why the sudden spacebar freeze and iMac restart?

  • 5610 Xpress music: restarting often while speaking

Could you please let me know, how to overcome this problem: I am having Nokia 5610 Xpress music - it is getting restart often while speaking(two times per day). I brought this mobile 5 months back. I faced the same problem right from the first day. After one months software has been reinstalled even though that problem continues.
Any body help me to resolve this problem! I have checked it out with my friends who are having the same model(5610 Xpress music). They are facing the same problem, among five person four having the same problem.

    Causes:
    - Navi-key and camera button gets unnoticeably stuck causing it to be flooded with commands pointing to the music player and camera leading to a force system restart.
-One of your music files got corrupted
    -Possible phone software corruption
-Mixing different music formats is not recommended as of the moment(on xpressmusic players only) - meaning putting files with MP3, eAAC, WMA files on one memory card could cause mixup and will lead to software malfunction
    -Memory card fault
    Possible solutions:
-Try checking the navi-key and camera button, make sure that they aren’t stuck.
-Replace your music files if you notice some file corruption
-Update your mobile phone’s software also known as firmware
-As much as possible don’t mix up files with different file types - this would also help the phone to save a much CPU power. Just stick to one - the eAACplus.
-Check if your memory card is faulty

  • IMac restarts more times, all alone

This morning my iMac restarted 4 times, all alone, 2 times simply listening to music, 2 times installing the Xcode update.
    A little bit worried...

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • My iMac restarts repeadly and shows yellow ~ all over the screen

My iMac restarts itself over and over I believe it is a kernel panic. It shows yellow, blue, and green ~ on every startup. Are there commands in the (Command+S) that will help me. All keys don't work on startup. I cannot do anything on it beside access (Command+S) on accasions.

If it was just restarting, this may have been software but since there is visible screen distortion, im thinking this is most likely a logicboard on its way out.    Definately take this to an apple store and have them diagnose and repair the machine.

  • IMac restarting by itself

    Hi all,
So the short of it is that my work iMac (bought new with 3 others), every so often, shuts down by itself and then restarts by itself as well with a message saying something along the lines of 'you have shut down your computer because of a problem'. It's like someone pulled the plug, no warning no nothing, just goes black and restarts. This happens as an alternative for then it crashes/freezes with the screen on and i have to force shutdown via power button.
I haven't been able to pin point reasons because there doesn't seem to be any particular trigger. Maybe when I'm using Adobe Creative Suite applications, but then again as a graphic designer, thats what Im always using, and Chrome (with, admitedly, more tabs open than average).
The tech guy has taken it in and supposedly ran some tests but came back with nothing to report, nothing happened with him. His latest theory is maybe a problem with the power supply, like a peak surge or something... I don't know, haven't tested with a surge protector yet. But done the usual permissions repair and disk repair etc and still nothing.
The other 2 iMacs, same specs, have never had these problems.
Searched online and haven't found any solutions and reports to my particular case. So I've decided to turn to this community for any help.
Below are the specs and an example crash report.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The graphics processor is faulty and will have to be replaced.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • IMac restarts all the time because of kernel panics

    Hi,
I bought an iMac several days ago.  It restarts several times a day because of kernel panics. I made apple diadnostics. It says evering is OK.
Could anybody help me to understand what causes the restarts?
Here is one of the error reports:

There are tests that can be done, but can prove to be unreliable:

Even though the RAM apparently meets the specs, it did for others on here that have had similar problems. The often-suggested fix is to return the RAM for a refund and get new modules from either Macsales or Crucial.
Taking out the new RAM and running with just the original modules should be a good indicator as to whether it is the new modules causing the problem.

  • IMac restarts after shutting down?

Every time when I shut down my iMac it restarts automatically, why is it happening?

    Hi, tough to tell, but...

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Problems with Mac OS 10.4.8 update & iMac restarts

The 10.4.8 update has not worked on my 20" Intel iMac. Twice I tried it and both times I had reinstall EVERYTHING from a backup. After installing the update it did not restart. It comes up with the black screen full of writing.
I did it once, couldn't do anything about it so I trashed the HD and cloned a backup. Once everything was back to normal I again installed the 10.4.8 update, this time using the Combo Updater instead of Software Update trimmed version—same thing. The iMac would not restart. Same black screen full of sprach.
Anyone else had this? Or does anyone why why?
Also, my Intel iMac has a nasty habit of randomly restarting all by itself.
    Anyone else's do that?
    iMacIntel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What you are descrbing is a kernel panic, a good number of kernel panics are caused by bad RAM. Combined with your spontaneous reboots that sounds like it might be the issue. I'd get it on the bench somewhere (Apple Store, local reseller) and have the memory tested.
And no, random reboots and shutdowns are not typical.

  • IMac restarts instead of shutting down

    Hello,
I have a 2009 iMac 24" running 10.6.2. When I select shutdown from the shutdown menu it asks if I want to shutdown and then after selecting yes it starts the shutdown process. After shutting down it immediately restarts. When selecting shutdown from the login screen, it shuts down correctly.
    -I've zapped my PRAM
    -I did a SMC reset
-I've unselected restart after power failure
-I have a wireless USB mouse connected
    -I have Apple's wireless keyboard
    Any thoughts?
    Help is much appreciated

If it does not happen in the new account (you should try it a few times to make sure), then the cause is usually one of two things, and there is probably not anything wrong with the overall system.
First is a background process that runs in your normal account. Check System Preferences Accounts pane +Login Items+ tab. Remove anything there that you no longer need to have running. Then, with what's left, remove one at a time and test to see if it makes a difference; make sure you note what you removed (and where it is located) so that you can put it back if it was not the cause.
Second are user preference settings. In this case, this is a bit harder to trouble-shoot, because I can't think of any particular user preference file that would make a Mac restart instead of shut down.
If the problem does not happen in a new account, and you can't determine the exact cause, one thing you could do is create a new user account for ongoing permanent use, and transfer your user data from your current account to the new account. Eventually, once everything is working fine, abandon your current account.
