Imac restore glitch

Downloaded Maverick.
Lost all data.
Restored to earlier point.
No data there either.
Re-restored to date after Maverick installation to try to retrieve data from the other account it supposedly was moved to (per discussions about the Maverick problem here)
Now, computer only gives white screen with apple in the middle and various blackened words/digits/symbols in upper left quadrant.
Help?

  • IMac screen glitches - early 2009 27"

Having problems with screen glitches in my iMac
I have a late 2009 Intel 27" iMac 2.66 quad core i5 with I believe the ATI Radeon ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card
I had been running Mountain Lion for a while without any problems. The first problem was the iMac wouldn't boot. I might not sure but this might have been right after a software OS update. The only way to boot was in safe mode. I verified the disk and repaired permissions and was able to boot normal but had screen glitches. These appear to be scrambled pixels or large just a large black window for the entire application portion of the screen. I zeroed the drive and re-installed Mountain Lion. Seemed to be working okay at first. Restored from backup and got the screen glitches again. Reinstalled Mountain Lion again. It appears the problem may be heat related. If I let the machine cool overnight it will boot fine. Once I let it run for a while, watch videos or facetime, the problem comes back.  Installed smc fan control and all three fans appear to be working fine. I've tried resetting the PRAM and tried changing the color profile and none of these things work.
I'm thinking I need to replace the graphics card.
Anybody have any suggestions before I do this?

Hi, I thinkj you're onto it!
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...

  • Intel imac display glitch and involuntary restart

Just want to know if anyone else has experienced this specific problem, there are plenty of complaints about intel imac displays but I can't be bothered to sift through them all trying to find a match for my problem.
A couple of months ago I was watching a video in quicktime and noticed that my screen was glitching and flashing fragmented diagonal lines - like a commodore 64 loading type thing. Then the spinning-ball came up and a force quit didn't do anything so I had to force shut down. I started up and it occured again. Then the screen went blank/black, but still lit up, and restarted without me doing anything. It also got stuck during start up the second time this occured. I panicked and ran out to buy a 500GB external drive, backed up all of my work and then re-installed mac osx from disk, archive and install job. This seemed to sort it and for the following two months it seemed OK. No sign of any problems.
Since then I have updated from 10.4.7 to 10.4.10 (which I have suspicion that it screwed the firmware in my motu 828 firewire audio interface, costing me a £130 repair - but that's another painful story).
It happened again tonight (the screen thing, not the motu). And the ball came up and I couldn't do anything. Force shut down, restart - screen glitching again. Then I had 2 unexpected restarts, one getting stuck in startup. Then a successful startup but accompanied by the glitchy graphics, mainly red/pink pixellated diagonal lines flickering in and out. I ran a disk first aid - no problems. Did a disk permission repair. Shut down and ran a hardware test, the first few minutes of the test the screen was still at it but then stopped glitching, hardware test found no errors (it was an extended test too). Now I'm back on it and it's all OK.
    Any suggestions/similar stories?
When it occured 2 months ago I had the original ram that came with the imac. Now I have 2x1GB sticks of crucial ram.

That's it! Well, that's what I have. Unfortunately, I don't know about the cause, but I don't ever recall having it prior to an update going back about a year ago. I recall an update, and that update being immediately followed by some sort of Apple Graphics something-or-other. I feel pretty certain that's when I first noticed this. I just had my LCD replaced for another reason, but I think you'll agree, it's not an LCD issue. In my case, browser activity, scrolling up or down in a page, seems to be the most common trigger. I've also seen "pieces" of the torn page, on the screen when minimizing the browser to the dock (usually Firefox, but I think I've seen it with Opera and Safari too). Is there a way to find update packages installed somewhere? I'd know it if I saw it, and I'd definitely try removing that suspect package/update.

  • IMac video glitches

About once a day I experience this strange graphical glitch.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/goochrules/3049656804 (can i get this image to display inline in my post?)
The color of the glitch vary, from yellow to magenta to cyan (light blue) to green. The pattern shown is typical, but the size and shape varies, and the pattern is sometimes mirrored, with either the upper left or right corner being the darkest.
The glitch goes away when the window it appears in is minimized, or the program is exited, or the window is obscured behind another window... basically anything that forces the area with the glitch to be redrawn. I am not sure if moving the window in which the glitch appears causes the glitch to go away.
The iMac is a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB ram and a ATI Radeon X1600 graphics chip, running OS X 10.5.5.

    Thanks for the reply!
I've tried to unplug everything (before was plugged only a4tech mouse and HP printer), and reboot the system. Nothing helps . i've performed reboot about 10 times. Also I've tried to reset SMC (unplug power cord for 15 sec, then plug 5 sec after, cmd opt p r) so sad. I can't use apple service in my country because of lack of service at all, only unofficial... Anyway thanks for replies... I will try to find the way to transport iMac to the nearest country with an apple service.... So sad, it was never happened with me, first critical issue with an apple device.

  • How can a G3 iMac restore user settings on a shared computer?

We have a learning lab at our gradeschool. They use PowerPC iMacs, 500MHz (Indigo). We would like to run OS 10.3.9 in this shared user environment. Without locking down all of the preference settings, is there a way to simply restore the settings when the user logs in, or upon restart?
Is there a standard utility, or one that can be added, that will do this task?
    Thank you for any recommendations!

You could write an applescript program to copy a saved set of preference to replace the active preferences. You can try deleting the preferences folder. The preferences folder should be recreated.  Try it & see what happends.  I think this will force each application to re-initialize it self.  This may be a little drastic.

  • New iMac with glitches

My new iMac exhibits sporatic glitches such as slow and sticking cursor, spinning beach ball, slow to open DVDs and CDs, and generally slower operation than my old G5 imac. The glitches seem to get worse the longer the computer is on and improve upon restart and zaping the pram. Any ideas??

Thanks for info. I just tried to wake up my iMac and it took over a minute for it to wake up and then another 15 seconds for the arrow cursor to appear. I tried to eject an audio CD and that took forever as well. I shut down the computer and the rotating gear never quit. I finally had to unplug the computer to shut it down. I restart and ran Disk Utility verify and repaired disk permissions. The following Warning was given:
Warining:SUID file "system/library/coreservice/remotemangement/ardagent.app/contents/macOS/ardagen t" has been been modified and will not be repaired.
I have been testing it and it seems to work properly now, however, this is not the first time I have done this. The Harddrive checked out OK. I also notice when opening up the system preferences box can take some time.
As I indicated before it seems to get worse over time if the computer is used for a period of time.
The only applications that I have loaded are Adobe CS, iWork, and MYOB Accountant Edge. Right now I have my old iMac G4, new intel iMac and XEROX printer on a ethernet network and also have a Airport Extreme with two airport express extensions for my wireless network. I have a Dell PC, iBook and another Dell laptop that use the wireless network.
My laptop and G4 run better than the new iMac?? The new iMac just does not seem like it should run so sporatic.
Any suggestions are appreciated. I hope to call Tech support or visit the Apple Store I purchase the iMac from.
    Thanks

  • Lost all iPhone files after iMac restore

    Hi there,
A family member when trying to back their iPhone onto our old iMac, used the iTunes 'Restore' function which wiped the iPhone.
I assume the files should be somewhere on the iMac.  It is an old G5 running OS/X 10.5.8.  The iPhone is a 4S running IOS 6.
Any ideas if the photos, music and apps files can be found?
    Many thanks,

Thanks, this is what we now understand.  The issue seems to be some form of idiosynchrocy in the older Apple operating system.  Later uses of the same function provided a 'Backup First' option.  So it goes...

I have an imac and i'm trying to do 2 things...install windows and restore mac back to factory settings. I know how to do it and understand the process but the mac won't let me. When i enter my install disk, it says i can't install it on this computer? When i try and restore the mac, i go to partition the drive and again it doesn't allow me as it can't move certain files or something? What's my next play? I'd appreciate any help. • 2009 27" 11,1 iMac graphics glitches bars and lime green circle

The last few weeks my iMac has been glitching every so often. It starts with a minor glitch usually wherever I'm using the mouse in a menu or selecting something and from there it mutilates everything I click on or switch to, even entire windows of applications become a complete mess of unrecognisable gibberish images.
If I then power down and restart I get a large, lime green oval in the centre of the screen on a grey background and other than the clock, almost nothing else even shows up on the menu bar or anything else, just grey with large bars running down the screen like the ones I've linked to here:
    http://i.imgur.com/8z79nte.png
    http://i.imgur.com/SRivY2e.png
If I boot into safe mode then I only seem to get the bars but everything else works ok. Previous to this most recent event, I had booted into safe mode and it had somehow fixed the problem. I rebooted into normal mode and went about my business.
I really hope this is some sort of fixable problem as I really can't afford a new computer or even to replace an expensive part

As babowa points out, the images you have linked to are just a white square and a black square. If you have screenshots showing the problem, you can add them to a post here by using the camera icon in the toolbar.
What you describe certainly sounds like a hardware issue. I would recommend contacting Apple for evaluation and service. You could make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store for that purpose.
Note that 53° C is not at all a concerning temperature, and also note that using SMC Fan Control is a bad idea. You should not tamper with the fan speed. If there is a cooling problem (which, again, is not indicated here), that would be a hardware issue that needs to be addressed by a hardware fix, not a software Band-Aid that could make the problem worse by preventing the fans from working as designed by Apple's engineers.

  • IMac Restore

Let's say I need to restore my new iMac. If I use the commercial version of Mac OS X Tiger and did the updates and what not instead of the Restore DVD included with the iMac, would FrontRow find it's way onto the computer? I know the Combo Updates have different size requirements based on the type of computer one owns, and I guess I was wondering if FrontRow is in the update. Just a little curiosity. Thanks for any help.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
before spending money: The retail version of OSX Tiger is NOT compatible with Intel-Macs.
It only contains OSX for PPC (Power-PC) Macs.
At the moment you have to use the OSX DVD that came with your iMac.
Personally I download all updates and store them on external harddisk, first since I have two Macs to update and second to have them ready in case of restore.
The OSX Combo Updater includes all system updates for either Intel-Macs or PPC-Macs.
That's why there are two different ones.

  • IMac Dock glitch?

    Hi everyone,
I've noticed on my parent's 20" iMac Core Duo that whenever (most of the time) it wakes up from sleep, and I click on any icon in the dock, instead of opening the app, it just opens its location in Finder (as if I had right-clicked and chosen "Show in Finder"). It seems to only happen if I quickly click on an icon after waking, but if I wait a little while, it seems that the Dock icons have "loaded" and they work fine. This seems odd as I do not have this problem on my PowerBook or my MacBook. Any ideas as to what this is and how to fix it? Having to sit there and wait while the dock finished "loading" is a little annoying.
    Thank you,
    William

"Dock glitch?"....."This seems odd as I do not have this problem on my PowerBook or my MacBook. Any ideas as to what this is and how to fix it?"
    William,
    No, not any glitch.
If the PowerBook or MacBook do not go through any "waking" process, then they're not in "full" sleep. The iMac Core Duo also does not need to be in "full" sleep.
"Is there something else about the hard drive and its "waking up" process?"
Not only the hard drive is waking up, but the processor, power supply and entire system is waking. For a short explanation see my post in another thread here:

  • 2 issues: incomplete photo restoration, glitches when taking screenshots on my Mini

Two isxues: a recent ios download forced me to restore my Mini to  factory settings & restore from wi-fI back--up. That was arbout 2 months ago & it says  that tons of pics are 'loading' still? How can I fully restore it?!
Secondly: when I attempt to download Safari images by 'hand' or screenshot on the Mini, it randomly won't save the shot 3-4 tries or Safari will crash & then get sluggy.  it's highly unreliable suddenly.. I can't always just select & import magss, so this is becoming an issue. Why? How can I fix it? I'm up-to date on everything,, it just is becoming hit or miss. IDK if any given app or action will work now or later, or if it'll  force a 3-5 minute freeze as it thinks about it? Truly, nothing is reliable /stable as of mid 2014, or close to. My iPad's & iPhones were
flawless & amazing for years...mow it's a drama starter on a weekly basis. I'm sorry to lash out, but we have been faithful since, literally, iPhone & iPade, plus iTouch nmber 1! But, it seems as if that doesn't matter, they are released so vlosely now, amy device over a year old is all but obsolete. But our entire everythjng
is on it. so we hit Walmart for the new, more stable, awesome replacement, which never is! ? I don't get this, I know you want to make money, but is that makif forcing quality & standard levels take the backseat?

I have a copy of what I did if that's what you mean.  And it's funny because it happened again.  I was just randomly messaging someone and a picture popped up with the Aa key and the color slide on the right edge .  Normally if I hit the pictures my pictures come up small on the bottom of Messenger and then I can send them or do other things.  But when it happened yesterday  I don't know if I hit a combination of keys or how I did it but I did but a large picture came up that I took of Facebook (both times were pics of f/b) and instead of the normal Airdrop, then Facebook, Messenger, Mail, Twitter and the More button  and under that the copy, slideshow, print, etc.  I get the Aa and the color thing.  Can someone be hacking me.  Can it be an error.

  • My iMac restored. how do I retrieve Apps allready downloaded and paid for?

iMac, processor speed 2.7GHz, memory 16 GB, capacity, 999.35 Gb
iMac bought by my son less than 2 years ago. Gifted to me after he retored iMac to factory settings. He had downloaded 2 Apps, Pages and Numbers, they are not on the machine now. I updated OS to Yosemite. Can I retrieve apps without further payment.

Legally he bought the apps. So you'll have to buy them yourself.
However, one of the new features in Yosemite is the Family Share. So he should be able to "invite" you into his Family Share plan and then you'll be able to see the purchases and download/install them. But I honestly don't know if this will work on past purchase or not. It's worth a try though.

  • IMac restored from external hard drive-password wont work

I just had my iMac wiped clean and migrated my information from an external hard drive however after migrating everything to the clean machine, the password wont work and when I attempt to reset it via the apple id, it wont go through even though I have checked and rechecked that I am using the correct information.
    help!

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combination  command-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • Ways to get the alum iMac to glitch

Hi I thought I would start a thread that would compile some predictable/semi-predictable causes, of getting the hardware to glitch or freeze. I personally have not had my system for a long time, so I do not have much data to work with. I have had glitches but no freezes, there was one instance where glitching apeared to be happening system-wide which may have been indicative of an imminent lock-up but I managed to reboot the system before that happened. Here are my causes:
-Resizing movies in quicktime while the movie is playing. Resizing will cause momentary glitches to appear on the movie window. This happens in both Leopard, and Leopard 1.3. But it doesn't seem to happen as much in 1.3.
-iTunes: I had opened a menu bar item over top of the itunes lathe visualizer. The menu disappeared with a slight glitching. I had a bad feeling when this one appeared. I switched off the visualizer and quit itunes and immediately started saving all my stuff and quitting applications. Other applications started glitching while I was doing this, so I proceeded to perform a reboot. This one occurred before 1.3 has not occurred since but I have been using the itunes visualizer more aggressively to see if I can get the problem to reappear. So far it hasn't.

    Thanks Naimesh Patel  .
Is there anyway to get the PENDING_LINES  value in the script?
Because i can't modify the standard print program, i can only edit the Sapscript Form and add in some extra subroutine only.
    tnx.
