Imac restore impossible?

I have an imac and i'm trying to do 2 things...install windows and restore mac back to factory settings. I know how to do it and understand the process but the mac won't let me. When i enter my install disk, it says i can't install it on this computer? When i try and restore the mac, i go to partition the drive and again it doesn't allow me as it can't move certain files or something? What's my next play? I'd appreciate any help. • How can a G3 iMac restore user settings on a shared computer?

We have a learning lab at our gradeschool. They use PowerPC iMacs, 500MHz (Indigo). We would like to run OS 10.3.9 in this shared user environment. Without locking down all of the preference settings, is there a way to simply restore the settings when the user logs in, or upon restart?
Is there a standard utility, or one that can be added, that will do this task?
    Thank you for any recommendations!

You could write an applescript program to copy a saved set of preference to replace the active preferences. You can try deleting the preferences folder. The preferences folder should be recreated.  Try it & see what happends.  I think this will force each application to re-initialize it self.  This may be a little drastic.

  • Lost all iPhone files after iMac restore

    Hi there,
A family member when trying to back their iPhone onto our old iMac, used the iTunes 'Restore' function which wiped the iPhone.
I assume the files should be somewhere on the iMac.  It is an old G5 running OS/X 10.5.8.  The iPhone is a 4S running IOS 6.
Any ideas if the photos, music and apps files can be found?
    Many thanks,

Thanks, this is what we now understand.  The issue seems to be some form of idiosynchrocy in the older Apple operating system.  Later uses of the same function provided a 'Backup First' option.  So it goes...

  • IMac Restore

Let's say I need to restore my new iMac. If I use the commercial version of Mac OS X Tiger and did the updates and what not instead of the Restore DVD included with the iMac, would FrontRow find it's way onto the computer? I know the Combo Updates have different size requirements based on the type of computer one owns, and I guess I was wondering if FrontRow is in the update. Just a little curiosity. Thanks for any help.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
before spending money: The retail version of OSX Tiger is NOT compatible with Intel-Macs.
It only contains OSX for PPC (Power-PC) Macs.
At the moment you have to use the OSX DVD that came with your iMac.
Personally I download all updates and store them on external harddisk, first since I have two Macs to update and second to have them ready in case of restore.
The OSX Combo Updater includes all system updates for either Intel-Macs or PPC-Macs.
That's why there are two different ones.

  • My iMac restored. how do I retrieve Apps allready downloaded and paid for?

iMac, processor speed 2.7GHz, memory 16 GB, capacity, 999.35 Gb
iMac bought by my son less than 2 years ago. Gifted to me after he retored iMac to factory settings. He had downloaded 2 Apps, Pages and Numbers, they are not on the machine now. I updated OS to Yosemite. Can I retrieve apps without further payment.

Legally he bought the apps. So you'll have to buy them yourself.
However, one of the new features in Yosemite is the Family Share. So he should be able to "invite" you into his Family Share plan and then you'll be able to see the purchases and download/install them. But I honestly don't know if this will work on past purchase or not. It's worth a try though.

  • IMac restored from external hard drive-password wont work

I just had my iMac wiped clean and migrated my information from an external hard drive however after migrating everything to the clean machine, the password wont work and when I attempt to reset it via the apple id, it wont go through even though I have checked and rechecked that I am using the correct information.
    help!

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why your password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. At the login screen, you can cycle through the available layouts by pressing the key combination  command-space or command-option-space. See this support article.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the window that opens, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.

  • Restore impossible with Yosemite Time Machine

I usually never have a problem backing up or restoring and rarely have to do anthying by make sure Time Machine runs and completes.
However, I may have gotten lax and not checked it yet after upgrading to Yosemite the other day.
When I try to open Time Machine by clicking the Time Machine icon -> Enter Time Machine
it immediately comes back with the popup - "Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk.
When I click OK it looks like it tries to bring up the interface but fails and just brings up a finder window.
The Time Machine disk is up, accessible and has space in it ... roughly 8TB total, 7TB used and 1 TB free.
The Time Machine disk Backups.backupdb is inaccessible and has the red minus sign on it.
I'm scared to change any permissions or and none of the other questions asked about this here have
any suggestions that have worked yet.
Is there a bug with Time Machine under Yosemite, and if so when will it be fixed?
    Is there a workaround?
Should I open the permissions on the Backups.backupdb, and to what?
Has anyone gotten TM to work under Yosemite, or figured out what's in common with we who have this problem?
If it's permissions that does not seem to serious.
Everything else on the system seems to be working OK.

Try E4 in the 1st linked article.

  • My imac restore everything to the default after i shutdown/restart

ANy activity or im trying to switch a gesture, or download any changes that i made will restore to default after i shutdown/restart. I cant even upgrade to yosemite ! Help;(( even browser home page change and dialog appear ask me to choose which browser to be my default browser.:((

    3) You have changed the boot sector by doing a manual installation, the script to start R&R is missing.
You could try using the Rescue and Recovery Repair Diskette to modify the boot sector, a floppy will be required. It would also be sensible to backup any important files beforehand. If everything works and you then run R&R it will install Vista.
    1) I'm not sure if this would work, it would be intersesting to know. I doubt it as R&R is different for XP and Vista.
    2) You could use the recovery discs from the other TP and return yours to factory state. This will delete everything on the hard drive. R&R will work afterwards.

Now, computer only gives white screen with apple in the middle and various blackened words/digits/symbols in upper left quadrant.
    Help?

  • What do the intel imac restore disc/ilife 06 come in?

are these discs just in little white sleeves or is there packaging for them like a box? Thanks.

Yes, the two dvds should be in a single white sleeve, but in my iMac carton they're in the 10.5" long x 5" wide "Designed by Apple in California" white box along with the manuals, mighty mouse, and remote. That box sits recessed into the big styrofoam tray (along with the keyboard) that takes up the upper space of the box above the iMac.

  • IMac Restore Printers from TimeMachine

Hello everyone, I am trying to get my printers back after restoring my new system from a TimeMachine backup. I followed the instructions in this article (http://www.jenmichaels.net/blog/how-to-restore-your-printprinter-drivers-after-a -mac-time-machine-restore/) but in TimeMachine I don't know where to go to find "Macintosh HD" to scroll down to the Cups folder I need. I've looked in Library, how can  Ifind this root directory, it's not listed on the left along with Documents, User, and etc.
    Thanks.

Ok, I followed the instructions by Paul here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2775350?start=0&tstart=0) but I instead copied over the whole CUPS folder. So instead of restoring from TimeMachine I just accessed the backup files from Finder and then copied them over manually to the same location on Macintosh HD. Seems to have worked  Inow have my printers back!!

  • Time machine restore impossible

Today I tried to restore some folders from TimeMachine but it failed.
It is under OS X 10.9.2. TM Volume is running on a Synology NAS. Newest firmware.
TM is still runnung, backups are running every hour, the backup medium is recocnized.
It is also possible to open the sparsebundle maually and to restore files from there. So fa so good.
I can start TM, the screen changes and after some seconds I can scroll through the windows an choose what i want to restore.
Klicking on restore and the TM-screen is froozen. No idea how to come back to desktop.
The only way seems to be a hard reset.
    Any idea what to do?
    Thanks Michael

Open Console (Applications > Utilities) and select All Messages on the left. in the top-right String Matching field, type backup. Note the time and commence the test restore. Leave it running for as long as it takes to be sure the problem has occurred. Do your hard reset and when you get back in, go back into Console and copy all of the backup messages (you will need to type backup into the String Matching field again) from the start of the backup until the hard reset.
We may have to examine more messages than that, but one thing at a time

  • I have the Imac restore disk but how I install it now?

When I put the disk into the computer and start it up, I just get a white screen with an apple.  Nothing else happens.

I was ready to give up. I had spoken to Apple Care and they thought it may be that the bluetooth keyboard wasn't being picked up by the computer since the computer was now a complete blank slate.  So I ran out and got a USB keyboard and I still could not get it working.
I was unable to even eject the disk to find out what recovery one it was.
But then I read the last two messages and did the Command & R and it's repairing my drive.  Thank you guys so much.

  • Imac restoration

I had my harddrive replaced by Apple, now I am unsure how I am suppose to recover all my data from my Time Machine Backup.
I don't have a start up disk, I don't have an installation disk, so I am not sure how I need to proceed?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thank you.

You NEED an installation disc. You have three options as I see it. 1. Contact Apple Suppoert and give them your serial number and purchase a set of original install discs. 2. Go to http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard and purchasea retail Snow Leopard disc for $19.99. 3. Find the original install discs that shipped with your Mac.

  • MacBook Pro Restore Impossible-Puzzling

My daughter's Mac Book Pro (circa May 2011) was upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard when she purchased it.  I think it was a display model.  The computer would shut down in the middle of the boot sequence recently with a number of file and access list errors and mismatches that were visible when I observed the boot screen.  I worked through Apple Chat and I'm exhausted.  I have replaced the HDD upon their recommendation and tried the internet recovery option.  That fails because the reload requires logging on to iTunes (not a problem).  I think I finally got it beat, but then iTunes returns with "the file is temporarily unavailable".  They, Apple, have sent me a Lion USB drive and even a Snow Leopard system recovery DVD.  I am very familiar with DU, partitioning, formatting (Mac OS Extended - Journaled)  NOTHING has worked.  It might be time to put this Mac out to pasture.  Any recommendations?

Thank you for the picture.  This is new to me since I was expecting the disk to be a white retail disk or a gray original install disk.  The picture show neither and also does not show the exact OSX and the version.  Based on the printed date I would think the it would be Snow leopard.  What I thought may be the problem was that the disk that you were using was an OSX version prior to the one that came with the MBP.  For me that question remains unanswered.
May I assume that you have a early 13" 2011 MBP?  This can be checked by entering the serial number (on the bottom) here:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
I would contact Apple and verify if indeed the install DVD is the correct one.  The serial number printed on it has no meaning for me.
Have you tried using the Lion installer?
Last stop is the Apple store genius bar.  Csound1 may have better ideas.
    Ciao.
