IMac Retina maximum resolution is it really 5 K ????

I currently own an iMac 27 inches 2011.
Since my pictures are 36 Mpx, I thought it would be nice to upgrade to the Retina new model.
iMac 2011 resolution is 2560 x 1440 which is 3,686,400 pixels
iMac Retina is 5120 x 2880 which is 14,745,600 pixels
So the new iMac has a resolution that is 4 times the one from my iMac 2011
So I should be able to see 4 times more pixels than before when I display
a large image at 100%.
So this afternoon I went to the Apple store with my sample.
A JPG picture 7360 x 4912 pixels = 36,152,320 pixels.
I had 2 iMac side by side. One non Retina and the new Retina.
The new Retina was set at the maximum resolution.
We launched Preview on both iMac and selected Actual size on both machines.
The new iMac offered a little bit more image like 30% more but certainly not 4 times !
I had 5 Apple store staffs around me who did not know what to say.
They acknowledged their was a problem and explained to me this was linked to the software.
Stupid answer. As if the screen resolution was dictated by Aperture or iPhoto...
To please them we tried both software and got same results...
So my question is simple.
With a screen offering 4 times more pixels, shouldn't I expect to see 4 times more
data from a picture displayed at full resolution ?
Thanks
Thierry

depend on the program in question various image programs start with various different settings in terms of best fit zoom or the likes
1 to 1 pixel display is an option in some such programs

whats the maximum resolution supported @ 60 Hz on an external display for mid 2014 macbook pro retina 13 inch ?

I don't know where you found 1920x1080, but that isn't the max. The INTERNAL display can even support more than that.
The maximum resolution is really hardware based, and since Thunderbolt 2 has a Mini displayport connector (Mini Displayport 1.2), the max resolution for Mini Displayport is 4k (3840x2160).
PLEASE NOTE: Not all adapters can support that resolution, most monitors that can run 4k @60Hz have Displayport 1.2 (The most recent revision), Mini Displayport 1.2, and HDMI 2.0. DVI dual link can run 4k, but only 24-30Hz, depending on the monitor.
    Hope this helps!!

  • External display - maximum resolution only works in safe mode on MBP

I'm having an issue with an external display connected to a 2012 non-retina MacbookPro 15" i7 running 10.9.  Monitor is Dell U2713HM, which has a maximum resolution of 2560x1440, and is connected via a Mini-Dipslayport to Displayport cord.
My setup has been working great for over a year, where while at my office I use the macbook closed in "clamshell mode" with the Dell monitor being the only display in use, running at 2560x1440.  However today when I came into my office and connected to the dispay as usual, the resolution on the Dell was noticably scaled.  System preferences is showing it running Scaled at 1080p, and when I select Best for Display it stretches to a very wide and distorted resolution.  I can hold alt and click the Scaled button to display additional resolutions, however the maximum resolution listed is 1600x1200.  Same problem regardless of clamshell, mirror, or extended desktop modes.
I've been trying to track down the problem, and have run though the usual procedures: restart, shutdown, reset PRAM, reset SMC, check cord connections, verify disk, repair disk permissions - all to no avail.  However when I boot in safe mode the display runs as it should at 2560x1440 without issue, which lets me know its not a problem with the cord or connectioin, but rather something on the OS / GPU side.
I can't for the life of me figure out what is causing the issue.  Considering its been working fine for quite some time, and I've made no unusual changes to the MBP in the past 48 hours when the display was working properly, I'm not really sure where to go from here.   Hoping to not have to migrate to a new user or repartion my HDD.
    Any suggestions on possible solutions?
    Thanks.

I stumbled upon a fix.  Still not sure what caused the issue in the first place, but for anyone having the same issue, the display override script contained on the site below seems to have fixed the issue.

  • Performance problems with Photoshop CC 2014 in combination with the imac retina 5k

    Hello,
I've been using the new imac retina, and i have enormous problems with the performance of Photoshop. If i for example use the selective color correction, this does not run smoothly. Other functions also work delayed. I noticed if i do not use Photoshop in full screen mode,  everything goes back to normal. A friend used the predecessor model imac without 5k resolution, but has no problems. I suspect Photoshop has problems with the resolution of 5k.
Anyone here who has the same problem?
    Specs:
    4GHz Intel Core i7
    24 GB RAM
    AMD Radeon R9 2048MB
    Photoshop CC 2014.2.2
    Thanks for help
    greetings Manuel

I hope Adobe fixed this problems with the next updates! With this terrible performance i cannot work. I actually just bought the new iMac Retina, because my old model was too slow... and now the Photoshop Performance is slower than on my old iMac. I have read that other users who have also a 5k iMac, report on same problems.  So i hope that a update or a solution for this problems come very quickly!

  • On the iMac Retina how do you scale to 5K without using a third party app?

On the Apple website there is a statement suggesting that using FCPX a 4K video can be seen in native resolution and still have room for timeline and tools etc. Without resorting to use of a third party app how do you adjust an iMac retina OSX and FCPX to achieve this?

    Thanks for your comment
I would have thought so too however having now visited two local Apple stores and asked staff how to see a 4K video at full resolution none of them could show me. The resolution settings of the iMac Retina are way below the full 5K. At optimised for Retina its understandably half but even when settings are adjusted to highest resolution it is nowhere near 5K - it gets scaled to somewhere between 3-4K. There is talk of "content awareness" but this didn't seem to have much impact when using Quicktime or FCPX to view the sample 4K video files (checking info on these files reveals they are 4K images but when viewed the  resolution was lower).
I am aware third party apps (such as RDM) can be used to get greater control over what resolutions the display gets run at but from the description on the Apple website I would expect this adjustment to be able to be made in OS X.
Quote from Apple iMac Retina pages:
"The sheer number of pixels on the new iMac with Retina 5K display lets you view the latest high-resolution 4K video at 100 per cent, while still leaving plenty of room for your assets and timeline."
So how do you achieve this? The iMac Retinas I tried in store did not show this.

  • IMac Retina - External Monitor support

Does anyone know where I might find some information about support for an additional monitor for the new iMac Retina?  I currently have a 32" Dell 4K monitor, will I be able to utilize it?
    Thanks
    Ralf

I would start by looking at the system specifications for the new machine, typically they outline the external display resolutions available. I haven't looked, the new machine just became available today so you may need to wait a few days to see if the system specification are available on Apple's website.  That should provide some clues.
If you cannot wait you can always call Apple's online store and inquire, if they don't know request that the question be escalated.

  • How do I install Canon Eos Utility on Imac retina?

I want to install the canon Eos utility software on the Imac retina...without dvd-player. I can only find updates at the Canon website. Anybody a solution?

    Ad additional thought:
If the only purpose of that app is to be able to attach your camera to the iMac and you don't want to go through the lengthy instructions on how to extract an installer, there really is no need to have it. You could simply insert the SD card into either your Mac's slot or use a USB card reader and can access all contents easily. Youc an either take a preliminary look at the pics with Preview or set it up so it'll automatically download into Aperture, or iPhot, or whatever app you use. I've done this with all my Canons - it's easy, fast, and saves the camera battery.

    Hello discomonkey,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It appears that some iTunes Match songs appear grayed out when you try to download them to your iTunes library. If you haven't already, be sure to authorize iTunes on your iMac before downloading content from iCloud or the iTunes Store.
These steps can help you download grayed out songs to your iTunes library:
Resolve issues with iTunes Match - Apple Support
Songs containing DRM (Digital Rights Management) might not appear in iCloud, or might appear grayed out. This can occur if your computer is not authorized to play that content. Authorize your computer, then manually update iTunes Match. To find out what Apple ID your computer needs to be authorized with to play a specific song, follow the steps below:
    Open iTunes.
Locate and select the song that you want to play in your iTunes library.
From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose File > Get Info.
In the Summary tab, find the Account Name field in the right column. Write it down.
    Click OK.
From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose Store > Authorize this Computer.
Type in the account name from the Summary field and enter its password. Click Authorize.
From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose Store > Update iTunes Match.

  • Best Config for imac retina 27 inch

    Hi
Im looking to purchase the new iMac but can't really decide what configiration to choose when purchasing. The main factors for me are speed and storage as I will have a huge amount of photos, (some photos will have a high resolution) and I really want the quickest response to opening of apps, programs etc. I also plan to use it it for some gaming. I don't really want to change my computer again in 2 years so really want to make it last and get the best performance possible to keep up with the ever changing tech world.
    I am looking at:
core i7 - what's the main difference from i5? Speed? Boot up time?
8GB ram (will upgrade later as it's user accessable)
Storage? Is 1TB flash to excessive? or 512 Flash is more than enough these days?
Graphics. Whats the main difference between these two?
    AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2GB GDDR5
    AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5
Any advise would be hugely appreciated.
    Thank you

I'm in the same boat you are, replacing a 2009 era iMac...here's my thinking.
CPU -- i7 -- there's actually a pretty material difference between these kinds of chips but can vary depending on the specific ones Apple decides to use in terms of #cores and hyper threading... I'm going with the i7.  The choice won't materially affect boot time.
RAM -- You definitely want 16GB not 8.  Now, you could get the standard RAM from Apple, but they use super cheap 4GB sticks filling two slots so you'd likely end up with 24 GB of RAM which (4x2 + 8x2) which isn't the most efficient config.  I plan to go with the 16GB config and then add another 16GB when/if needed.  This has the benefit of not having to deal with Apple saying any particular early system issue are due to "nonstandard" RAM.  Their RAM, their problem to fix :-)
Storage -- I started where you are now thinking about the 1TB SSD, but the price is just absurd.  So I am going with the 3T Fusion drive which also has the SSD component which will make boot times about the same as with a pure SSD solution.  Then, once the warranty runs out in 3 years, I would probably swap in a 3rd party SSD since there is no warranty to void and 3rd party 1T SSDs will probably be around $200 by then.
Graphics -- the 295 obviously has double the VRAM which is important for gaming in terms of textures, but as important it uses the new AMD GPU which one can only assume is a lot better.  Given the number of pixels being pushed, I'm going with the most I can in this category.
I won't be getting mine for about another month so would love to hear your hands on impressions, especially with gaming.  I currently game on my 2009 iMac and it's definitely showing its age.  I don't expect my iMac to be a monster gaming rig, but do expect to be able to run current 3D games at medium to high quality but not at 5k, just at the standard 1080p.

  • IMac retina base model 5 months in thoughts?

Hi, was just wondering what iMac retina owners think of their machine now that they have had it for a few months?
Would love to hear from people who own the base model and brought it around the time of release.
I'm in the market for one and have read a lot on the internet about lag and how the base GPU doesn't cut it.
Is the base model worth it or is the i7 and 4GB ram essentially for a smooth experience?

I too am in the market, in fact I expect to get my Retina this Monday. I will be using mine for editing photographs as I am into Photography. High end Canon and some video with same. I don't really thing that unless you are using it for professional video work or heavy multitasking that you need to go with the 4 Gig Video card, or the i7. I went with the standard unit with 16 gig of ram. thats it. Hope this helps.

  • IMac Retina 5K (2015) with 1xTDM iMac (2011) and 1x Dell External Display possible?

I have 1 x 27" iMac Retina 5K (2015), 1 x 27 " iMac (mid 2011) and a Dell P2715Q. I'd like to know if it's possible to run the 2011 iMac in Target Display Mode and my Dell as a secondary display from my 2015 iMac? My desired configuration is the 2015 iMac running two external displays. The 2015 iMac has an AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB Gfx card and both iMacs are running Yosemite 10.10.1
I have verified that running the 2011 iMac only via TDM works. Also running the Dell as an external Display only works (either at 4K resolution or the same resolution as the external iMac (2560x1440) via SwitchResX). With the Dell running @ 2560x1440, trying to put the 2011 iMac into TDM, causes a slow grey screen, then some display artefacts when coming out of TDM. Going in and out again appears to refresh the screen. But it doesn't seem to work.
I was wondering if anyone else has a similar configuration working and if so what settings or configuration changes to make?
    Thanks!

I stopped by the Apple Store yesterday, and they were nice enough to try the Screen Sharing solution with me.
Indeed, we were able to share the screen of a MacBook Pro and display it on the iMac Retina 5K over a Thunderbolt Bridge network. (should also work over WiFi)
As I expected, (based on the native resolutions) the MBP window maxed out at about 55-60% of the height and width of the 5K display.
I didn't try experimenting with lower resolutions on the 5K.
I'd actually be OK with that solution except as we increased the font sizes, (e.g. 48 pt) we noticed a *lot* of ghosting around the characters.
I will have to try it again at normal font sizes and decide if that is something I can work with all day long.
Otherwise, I am leaning towards buying last year's iMac, which kinda' grates me the wrong way.
    Thanks,

  • W540 + Ultradock: External monitors not showing correct maximum resolution

I have three 20" LCD monitors and the Ultra Dock.  I am connecting them as: 1 with VGA, 1 with DisplayPort to DVI cable and 1 with DVI cable.
The ones one the DisplayPort and one with DVI both show a max resolution of 1280x1024 even though the monitor has a native resolution of 1600x1200.  The VGA connected monitor shows the correct maximum resolution.
When I connect the DVI cable to into the mini-displayport connection on the laptop itself, that same monitor shows the proper 1600x1200 resolution.
Is there some limitation here preventing me from using the full 1600x1200 resolution through the dock?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Solved!
My dock already had the same version as the update file.  Plus, the description of item fixed did not match my issue.  I had no blinking or missing screens, I had too low of resolution.
...But I have found the solution on my own.
Surprisingly I have not see it discussed anywhere on this forum.  I found the answer here:
    http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/gjde49ww.txt
    It contains the following information:
In Standard mode, all dock displays uses Integrated Graphics as display output
and is limited to a maximum of 3 displays including Computer's LCD.
While in Advanced mode, all dock displays uses Discrete Graphics as display
output and it increases the maximum number of displays to 6 including Computer's LCD.
    Also:
    ThinkPad W540 (Standard Mode)
    Intel HD Graphics
    - (Computer's LCD)
    - Computer's analog VGA connector
    - Computer's DisplayPort connector
    - Docking Station's analog VGA connector
    - Docking Station's DVI connector(s)
    - Docking Station's DisplayPort connector(s)
    - Docking Station's HDMI connector
NVIDIA Quadro K2100M or NVIDIA Quadro K1100M
    - No display is connected to this display adapter.
    ThinkPad W540 (Advanced Mode)
    Intel HD Graphics Family
    - (Computer's LCD)
    - Computer's analog VGA connector
    - Computer's DisplayPort connector
NVIDIA Quadro K2100M or NVIDIA Quadro K1100M
    - Docking Station's analog VGA connector
    - Docking Station's DVI connector(s)
    - Docking Station's DisplayPort connector(s)
    - Docking Station's HDMI connector
Something about this really prevents the resolution I wanted.
I switched to advanced mode in the BIOS as such:
The procedure below allows user to select "Standard mode" or "Advanced mode"
    1. Power off the computer.
    2. Power on the computer.
    3. While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed
at the lower-left area or lower-center area of the screen, press the F1 key.
The ThinkPad Setup menu will be displayed.
    4. Choose "Config" then "Display" to show the menu.
    5. Select "Video Mode on Dock" and press Enter.
    6. Select "Standard" or "Advanced" for your preference
    7. Press F10 key and select "Yes" to save and exit from Setup menu. Then the
    computer is restarted.
After a few reboots, I have proper resolution on all displays.
Not sure if there are any downsides to advanced mode, but it certainly feels like it is my solution.  This gets me back to what just worked fine with the W530 I had before this.
