IMac Rev. B 20" back in repair!!

Yes, it's back in repair for the third time. Having problems with the power supply...kept shutting down on it's own, sometimes restarting over and over. First time they were able to fix it w/o a new part. Second time they replaced the power supply..worked for a week then power would not turn on at all. So it's back in repair!
I have never had an Apple computer need this much, if any, repair. My love affair with my $2000 computer is fading fast.
Anyone else in same boat with same model? Is this a known/common problem?
; (

My revision A system had a power supply, a LCD screen, and keyboard replaced.
My revision B system has had a replacement logic board, case, and mouse.
So, my experience is that the iMac G5 systems are much more problematic than other previous Macintosh systems.
I never purchased AppleCare before for any of my other many Macintosh computers (several over the last decade or so). But, for the new iMac G5 systems, I consider AppleCare the most important part of the purchase.
Very unfortunate that they have let their quality drop.
Here's hoping that Apple refocusses their company on building quality products again. It would be nice to know that you are getting something for a $2000 investment.
It's sad to say that both of my more recent PC systems have proved far more reliable than my last two Mac purchases. Even worse is the fact that neither PC cost me more than $400. The last $400 PC is going on 3 or 4 years of service now, and the newer $400 PC is going on a year. Neither has failed once in it's time.
Fortunately, all my older Macs (both those I still have, and those I used to own) were / are 100% reliable for me. But, the iMac G5 is one to buy cautiously. Don't buy one without the AppleCare warranty.

  • Newly Puchased Refurb iMac Display blew; Send back or repair?

Just wanted to get some thoughts from the forum gang. I just purchased a new refurb iMac Intel Core 2 Duo white from the Apple Online Store, and it worked great...for about 2 weeks, when last night the display freaked out and then blacked out. I took it in to my local Apple Store to be repaired, and they told me I had the choice, since I just received it May 9, to have them repair it or that I could send it back to Apple for a new one. Well, a new refurbed one. I was really torn. At least with this one I know everything else worked great, and if all they have to do is put in a new display, it will be a lot easier than removing the added RAM, repacking it, mailing it back to Apple, waiting for them to receive it and send another one, and then wait all day for FedEx to deliver it.
If it had been a new computer, I wouldn't think twice about sending it back, but how do I know I wouldn't get a replacement refurb iMac with more problems? So I opted to let the Apple Store repair the one I have. As the replacement display was not in stock, I do have some time to weigh my decision. What do you all think is the better option? Thanks much.

Normally you have the 14 day timeframe to reject the Mac. Sometimes with a refurb you pay for the model and occasionally you get an Easter Egg or two. Were there any free upgrades that came with the Mac? Upgraded HD or graphics card or extra RAM?
With a brand new Mac you would not get a refurb replacement during the 14 day timeframe, you would get another brand new Mac.
Since this is a refurb, this may not be the first thing to go wrong. It could be a lemon, it happens, even with Apple. I would definitely buy the Apple Care extended warranty with this one.
Then again, replace the display and you may have the best 'puter you have ever had. One can never tell with electronics. But Apple always stands behind its product.

  • G5 iMac rev B shuts down unexpectedly

I know there are other threads on this, but I thought I would start one for G5 iMac rev B models.
Mine is about 17 months old now (no, I don't have Apple Care!) and has worked very reliably - until yesterday. It shut itself down at some point during the night of Sat/Sun, and again about 5 minutes after I restarted it on Sunday morning.
    What I've done so far:
1 after the second shut down, I restarted in single-user mode and repaired the disk using fsck -fy. No repairs were reported.
2 I also repaired permissions, although I believe this is irrelevant to the issue.
    What I haven't done yet:
    3 reset the PRAM
    4 reset the SMU
So far (touch wood), the computer has not shut itself down again. If it does, I'll do steps 3 and 4 above and post back. It's now had exactly 24 hours uptime, by the way.
I'm in 10.4.8 (the profile can't be updated, so it's stuck at 10.4.7). Are there any other rev B users who have started to experience these shut downs? Is there any connection to being in 10.4.8, or is that pure coincidence?

To other Rev B owners with failed power supply units...
Unfortunately, I was not successful in convincing Apple to cover this part for my son's May 2005 Rev B. The repair was done, out of pocket, for about 200.00, by an Authorized Apple Service Center. I did get a written reply from Customer Relations today to my letter expressing my position and concerns vis a vis others who may be in the same situation. The official response was terse and essentially reiterated Apple's hard line position.
My guess is that quite a few more Rev B's will have to fail in order for this item to be covered by what would essentially be a revision to the Rev A's Extended Repair Program. The word "current" clearly appears in the original program description on line, as well as in their letter to me.
In other words, Apple might change course in the future and include certain Rev B models, one would assume, if the failure rates are high enough. At this point in time, it didn't really concern them that 100% of the iMac G5 Rev B's PSU's in our family failed.
Nevertheless, I understand the company's position. Although my hopes for reimbursement from Apple are dashed on this particular issue, it will not affect my future product purchasing decisions, except that I will definitely get Applecare coverage and insure myself for three years of worry free use.
It would be interesting to hear if anyone with a Rev B has actually gotten Apple to pay for this repair, outside of an existing Applecare Plan or expired one year standard warranty coverage. I ran into a brick wall, but others may have hopefully gotten through. If so, please share the details of your experience.

  • Really Dead iMac Rev B

My iMac Rev B, 233 mh has been running just fine (for years ). Yesterday, my iMac suddenly turned off, as if I pulled the plug out of the wall. I had not, of course. The fan stopped, the disk stopped spinning and the screen went black. Now, it will not start up at all. Nothing.
I was using a usb modem, had the iMac plugged into an APC, verified the computer was getting electricity by plugging it into another place, etc.
Any ideas on what happened? Could this possibly be due to a very old battery? I have not had any problems losing the time, etc. so the battery did not seem to bad.
Could it be the power supply? Or what?
I did have some of my files backed up but not all. We had replaced the original disc with a 40g disk. Can I take that disc out and put it in a case and get the data off it that way? I have a huge iTunes library and really don't want to lose that!
Any help or ideas would be very welcome!

An update on my poor iMac. My SO tested the power cord and it is ok. I cleaned inside the prong holders and the power prongs (or whatever you call those things ) well and reattached the power cord. Still nothing.
My SO opened up the iMac and we removed the battery. It tested at 3.2 volts. But we decided to try a new battery anyway. Before we took out the battery, I looked up what kind we needed in Apple Care and then called around, including Apple. No one said they carried the battery, including Radio Shack.
So, when we had the battery out, we were going by Radio Shack anyway and stopped by and, lo and behold, they had one for $12.50. I had seen the battery on the net for $2.95 so we'll probably order one.
I sure had a big surprise when my SO took out the mother board. It and the fan were absolutely covered with ASH. Yes, ash. I've had the iMac in the same room as our wood stove and I guess when I cleaned out the ash some of it went into the air and got into the iMac. It was at least 1/16 inch on part of the mother board. Maybe we got a hot spot on the mother board from that. **sigh**
We're going to look to see how difficult it is to test the power supply and/or to replace one. The poor old iMac is sitting on a table sans it's mother board and looking quite sad.
Thank you to everyone who has made suggestions so far.

  • IMac does not turn back on from sleep mode

    Hi all,
I've having a problem sometimes that my iMac won't turn back on after I put it into a sleep mode. This does not happen everytime. After  the machine does not turn back on, the only workaround is to unplug the power cable and connect it back. Then I'm able to turn on the iMac. After the machine boots up, and I will get the crash report said that the machine does not turn it off properly.
I tried to reset the SMC before and it did not resolve the problem.
    Any idea?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

After the latest updat to Mavericks 10.9.3, my imac continues to loop back to the login screen...Suggestions??? THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My macbook is back from repairs. It is not working with my apple led cinema display. It was working prior to the repairs on the laptop. Is there a setting I don't know about that might have been changed?

My macbook pro is just back from repairs.  It is not working with my apple led cinema display. I have followed the directions in the cinema display manual.  am I missing something?

Take a look at the Displays preference panel to see if everything is ok, particularly the resolution and refresh rate.  Displays will probably try to put the panel for the ACD on the ACD where you won't see it.  So click "Gather Windows" to get the ACD panel on to your macbook.
One more thing, make sure you fully seated the mini displayport plug.  They can be sneaky little devils in that they need to be fully pushed in.

Do you have a computer with iTunes on it that you have associated the iPad with?
If the answer is yes, simply set iTunes up to back up the device locally, fully sync the apps, photos, movies, etc. A copy of everything, including the config of the device and all your settings (scores) will be made on the computer's drive. This even includes a backup copy of all the apps. When you get the replacement device (probably a refurbished blank unit), a Restore from that backup will totally reconstruct what you have today.
If the answer is no, you will have quite a bit more work to do in order to get back to the original state that the iGadget is currently in (minus the crack).

    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
