IMac running 10.6.8. Slow start up. Disappearing hard drive space
I have 46.5 GB available on my hard drive at startup, but it quckly goes down to 0. I can watch it disappear. Disk drive seems to be running all the time. When I restart it goes back up to 46GB.

Imac crashes often and has slow load time. (maybe hard drive problems)
Ok, I'm currently using an Imac G5 17" with 2 gigs of ram. (one dimm from a third party)
Some times my I mac works fine, often times The computer will freeze up for 3 to 10 minutes or become completely frozen where I have to physically turn the computer off.
This happens randomly using various applications ( i tunes/ arkaos vj, word, photo shop) I will see the spinning color wheel (as if it's thinking) and sometimes there is a clicking sound coming from within the computer.
(if you take a one of those clicking ice tea caps and push down on it and then let go. You'll hear the sound that my computer is making. except it continues to make that sound for a few minutes or so.
I have had external hard drives that have made a similar clicking sound before they died. leading me to believe that the hard drive is going bad.
I was curious if any one else has ran into this problem or might know what is causing it.
thanks!!Please back up your data ASAP! Your drive is dying and you should make a clone of your system (I use SuperDuper!) before it gives up the ghost entirely. Use a firewire external to clone to, then, when you get a new drive, you can simply reverse clone the data onto it and you'll be up and running.

Spotlight on my iMac (OSX 10.6.8) has suddenly begun indexing the hard drive non-stop, causing very sluggish operation and spinning beach balls. Reinstalling the operating system has not helped, nor has repairing permissions or the disk.
One of the first things that happens when installing a new version of OS X is that the Spotlight search app is setup to index all available hard drives.
The indexing makes it faster and easier for the Spotlight Search app to find things on and off your Mac.
You can either let it take the time it needs to do this (Spotlight will only do this one time, initially) OR if you just can't or want to wait for this to complete, you need to go into OS X System Prefences panel in the OS X Dock, locate the Spotlight icon.
Click the Spitlight icon and another set of menus appear.
Find the menu item dealing the Spotlight indexing and uncheck its checkbox to disable Spotlight indexing. -
Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.
You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down. -

Hi. My iMac hard drive is running Mavericks. I have an old version of Quark Xpress (3.32) which won't run in Mavericks. Can I partition my hard drive and run an older system on one partition, so I can access my Quark? Is that possible?

QuarkXPress 3 is a Classic Mac OS application, so you need a version of OS X that still supports Classic. I believe 10.4 was the last one.
So if you have an iMac that boots with 10.4, then yes that is possible. I doubt though that newer Macs boot with OS X 10.4.
So why don't you upgrade QuarkXPress 3 to a newer version? I am not just asking that because I want you to spend money with us.
Typically using software that was released almost 20 years ago is just feasible when you keep an environment that was current at the time of release or a few years after, so an older Mac with a operating system present at that time. 20 years in IT is a lot.
So my opinion is that on a new Mac with a brand new operating system you need to use something a bit more current.
How about QuarkXPress 9 (released 3 years ago) or QuarkXPress 10? You are better off with v9, as QuarkXPress 10 only opens v7 and higher (whereas QuarkXPress 9 opens v3.1 and higher).
Or - I am even happy to make an exception - upgrade to 9 and we give you 10 for free? Let me know please.

Boot the ssystem from the OS DVD. Once it is booted run Disk Utiltiy. Select OS Extrended (Journled)

I purchased a IMac in Feb later I added a Seagate ext. hard drive. On April 29 I received an errors that the ext. Drive may be a read only and not backing up files. I'm unable to check disk permission or correct errors. Help would be appreciated.
Click on the hard drive on the desktop, then File > Get Info. What does it say about permissions? If this is just a data drive you may want to consider "ignore ownership on this volume".
Otherwise I can only say I have not been reading good things about Seagate drives recently. I have some of their rock-solid ones from about 10 years ago (still running well), but now...? -
Firefox eventually consumes all available hard drive space while running
I have 1-2 GB available on my hard drive. When I leave Firefox running for a while (a few hours to a few days, not sure what triggers this behavior), my available hard drive space goes down and down until it gets down to 0. If I quit Firefox, the hard drive space frees up.
I always have multiple windows and tabs open. I'd rather not quit Firefox ever, but I have to to get my HD space back. Sometimes it doesn't seem to happen for a long time, and then it starts happening. I've been rebooting about weekly recently and it hasn't helped any.I would also have assumed it was just variations in VM usage & application or system memory usage - except that it may show, say, 300 MB available AFTER rebooting, and then, without my launching any applications or using the computer, just immediately rebooting a second time, show 2 GB available.... so somehow the space available isn't be allocated properly it seems to me...
I was also afraid that I was running with too little available space - but have been doing so for months now without these problems. I've got a lot of large video files on the drive, no other drive available to transfer them to, no $$ right now for purchases... and didn't want to delete the videos. I need to transfer more to CD/DVD's but have done all the 'easy' ones that are less than 700 MB already, and have to either waste DVD's or take the time to convert them to versions that will allow the DVD to play on TV also - something I haven't tried yet and gather takes a bit of time. So I've been running along with the drive pretty full.
I would really like to know how to find any 'junk files' like temp files, any duplicates, etc that can be safely deleted, but also not sure how to do that on a mac? So there's this issue, and also the first paragraph, e.g., that it seems to me that somehow the space available allocation isn't being properly shown - is there some way I can check that, find out what is using up the space? -
Hard drive space disappeared after starting to us iDisk
Before I started using iDisk I had about 80 G of hard drive space. Now I have 7 G!
I have followed other threads and I have checked the Volumes folder and find my home folder there, the iDisk and my external drive.
If I try to delete any of them I get a message that says I don't have the permissions.
I have decided to trash iDisk. How do I get rid of it and get my drive sapce back?

Deannathe default on my iMac was to auto-back the Macintosh HD to iDisk daily. Well, the HD had about 57 Gb of stuff on it, and the iDisk allows a max of 1 Gb, and even if you pay more, you can only get up to 4 Gb. So, the program copied to the iDisk icon on my desktop. Lost 57 Gb of space ovennight. Finally found out that its a good thing to back up (to your online iDisk acct) a few things that you want to keep. I had a tech walk me through. First, if everything is still as it was on your HD, delete the copied HD from the iDisk desktop icon. Then, you can either DL huge files (like your whole HD to some disks, or in my case, I had a freestanding 100 Gb harddrive, so I used it for the target, and backed up EVERYTHING. Now when I perform a backup, it doesn't add much-just whats new or changed.

Hard Drive Spaces Vanishes, MacBook won't start
I am quite perplexed and sad because my MacBook is in a terrible state.
So, I normally have limited hard drive space remaining (1 - 3gb) on my drive, but earlier it started bothering me, telling me I had 400mb left. I then deleted some files and brought it back to 2.2gb left. Within a few minutes, I got another warning the hard drive was almost full. Suddenly, it was down to 146mb remaing, steadily decreasing (the only things open were Adium and Update). Then, it had 0kb left and started telling me to force quit applications. I eventually shut down, and now it won't boot. I turn it on, get the grey apple at the rotating graphic, but it stays there. Ironically, I can still boot windows.
Please, if you have any suggestions, I would very much appreciate help.
ThanksIt sounds like you are building up excessive temporary files. What apps are you running? Have you installed apps lately? You should always keep at least 15% of your drive empty at all times.

How can I relocate my music so it lives outside my computer in a hard drive? I'm running out of hard drive space.
The referenced article does not address the issue of just moving the music files outside my iMac, then still use my iMac and iTunes to manipulate those files without them adding bulk memory space to my iMac. Would like to have the link or alias, or path fully described so that I may keep adding more music. Plus one more thing, I would like to be guided as to how to back all of this music onto my capsule via time machine.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

Running out of hard drive space---can I use my external hard drive-??
I have a 16GB iPod nano. I hope I can explain my problem well enough.
My laptop computer has the iTunes that I use for syncing my iPod. It has over 25gb of songs in it, but my problem is that it has completely run out of hard drive space, and I don't think I can delete anything else.
I have a 250 GB external hard drive that also has all my songs backed up on it, that has hard drive space left on it.
Is there a way to load new music into the external hard drive, that will sync up to the iPod when I connect it to the laptop, WITHOUT putting a copy of it into the laptop, and taking up space-?
The way it appears to me, and I may be wrong, is that there are 2 copies of eaxh song on my laptop---the one in my music folder, and then the one in the iTunes folder. Is that correct-?
OR, is there a way to remove some of the songs from the laptop, and put them into the external hard drive, but will still sync up to the iPod-?

I think your best move would be to the move the entire iTunes library including of all of its file to your external hard drive and running your iTunes from there. You can even have it so that all newly imported music is saved to the external drive as well.
