IMac running 10.6... I can boot into XP no problem, but Mac partition and Boot CD/DVDs will not go

Have an iMac running 10.6... I can boot into XP no problem, but although the mac partition shows up at (alt key) startup, it just spins for about 5 minutes then restarts. Also, it will not boot from any bootable CD/DVD at all (same spin cycle occurs). Tried about every trick I could research. No warning at all regarding this. Everything was going just peachy then pow... out of nowhere she won't boot. Any ideas

I sugggest you backup the windows xp and start from scratch. This means your disks partition is MBR and not GUID so the mac partitions cant effectively communicate with the EFI partition (bios) and boot.
So boot up using ur mac DVD.
Choose ur language
at the top of the screen, go to tools and open disk utility
highlight your hard drive and hit the partition tab. select 1 partition and make sure its set to format it as GUID and mac HFS+ file system
Reinstall mac os x do all ur updates
use boot camp utility to make a new windows xp partition and installation.
then to select between os's hold down option during startup

I have a 2006 iMac running Lion 10.75. can I run Airplay Mirroring on this machine

The problem I'm facing is that I cannot make any changes to anything because my home folder is no longer found.  I can't even reset it to boot from something other than the installed OS (OS X 10.6.80.  Is there any solution to this problem?  I have made a USB drive bootable but cannot get the machine to boot off of that either.  I am at my wits end.  Please help!

  • I can't boot to Windows after resizing my Mac partition.

So, I recently decided to resize my bootcamp Win7 partition. This is something I have done successfully before, by:
    1) Booting into Macintosh
    2) Using Disk Utility to decrease the size of the Mac partition (20GB the first time)
    3) Booting into Windows
    4) Using Mini-Tool Partition Wizard (third-party) to allocate the free space to the Bootcamp partition.
There were a couple issues caused by this the first time around, mainly the fact that Macintosh didn’t recognize the fact that the free space had been taken, and had trouble reading from the Windows partition. However, I could live with that. I have since rebooted to both Mac and Windows several times without problem.
Recently, I decided I needed a bit more space, and so started to follow the above steps, shrinking the Mac partition an additional 15GB. Only when I went to reboot to reallocate the space, the Windows partition didn’t show up as a bootable option. Confused, I booted back to Mac, and the Bootcamp partition was still there, but renamed “disk0s4”, and unmounted. Reparing the disk failed (“Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: 15921e”). The disk wouldn’t mount (not even sure if it was supposed to be mounted earlier, but that’s what it looks like). It also appears grayed-out in the list of drives to the left. It looks like I can create a dmg from the windows drive, although I haven’t done that yet (I will soon).
Any solutions for this? Although I will erase the drive if absolutely necessary, it would be preferred if that wasn’t the first option to try. I had no problems like this the first time I resized the disk.
(My mac partition is running Mavericks, if that is of any relevance)

These steps correct the Partition ID, and the boot ability of the MBR partition that has Windows on it.You can type '?' for help in the following steps where you set the fdisk prompt.
To fix the MBR, in OSX Terminal
    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
    setpid 4
    07
    flag 4
    p
    w
    y
    q
Please ignore the i386 message that you see in the following. Here is the set of commands in the utility. The utility starts at partition id 1. If you see any other messages, please post back.
    sudo fdisk -e /dev/disk0
fdisk: could not open MBR file /usr/standalone/i386/boot0: No such file or directory
    Enter 'help' for information
    fdisk: 1> ?
      help Command help list
manual Show entire man page for fdisk
reinit Re-initialize loaded MBR (to defaults)

Can you install tiger on a power mac g4 with out a DVD drive if so how, I do have have a 2011 iMac can I use that in target disk mode with a FireWire cable any help would be appreciated

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.

  • I'm running Mavericks 10.9.3, updated iTunes earlier today, but although I can play audio CDs, DVDs will  not play, any suggestions?

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.3, updated iTunes earlier today, but although I can play audio CDs, DVDs will  not play, any suggestions?

    Hello there, tomazdes.
The following Knowledge Base article written for the USB SuperDrive, offers some practical steps to try when issues present themselves with particular content playback (feel free to skip Step 3 when working with an iMac or MacBook with built-in drives):
Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801
    Particularly:
Accepts discs but they don't mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

My old iMac and OS 10.4 will not accept the New iTunes Version 10 application and I can't get past the screen offering to download iTunes 10.  This is wrong and I need help getting past this situation. Help!

Sure, you can get around it if you don't need the newest version of iTunes. I still use version 7.5 because the newer versions didn't strike me as offering anything I needed.
If you do need a version 10-something then you will have to upgrade your operating system to Leopard (fi your computer will support it) at least.  If you need 10.5 for some reason then there's no getting around it, you will have to buy a new computer.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.

  • DVD will not play on iMac in Bootcamp using Windows 8

I am trying to play a DVD in Windows 8 being run with Bootcamp on my iMac (OSX 10.9). The DVD will not autoplay in Windows. You can see the DVD in the folder view, but can only access the Video_TS and Audio_TS files, not the actual playable DVD. Have tried playing it through the folder view as well as Windows Media also to no avail. Booted down Windows and into Mac OS, and the DVD autoplays just fine. How can I get it to play in Windows mode, as the software we are running for a certain program needs to be accessed constantly before and after the DVD needs to play?

tried the vlc player it's free to download and works better then other players really

    What do I do now?

Hold the shift key at boot time, then run through this list, did you install anything recently or perform a update of some third party software? Uninstall it.

  • Any DVD I rent from the red box or at the library my 27"iMac and my MacBook Pro will not operate.

Any DVD I rent from the red box or at the library my 27"iMac and my MacBook Pro will not operate.  The Mac's take the DVD's and it sounds like it's trying to run the DVD.  After about 10 seconds the Mac just spits it out.  I am using the newest version of the Beta Yosemite OS X 10.10.3 Version.  I'm a little more than a novice user, just to keep in mind... Can anyone help me fix this problem?

Aside from running the beta (and not being allowed to discuss anything at all about it anywhere including these forums), I have found that some commercial DVDs (and actually also music CDs) are coded such that they will not play in any device that could ostensibly be used to copy the content due to DRM/copyright issues. The DVDs played just fine in both of my DVD players hooked up to my TVs and the music CDs worked in my stereo system.
Have you tried to play those in a regular DVD player?

I installed windows 7 on my macbook pro. all is working but lan adaptor and sound od laptop is not working. please help me or send the link where i can download the these drivers.I have lost my resource cd .

If you are running Lion or Mountain Lion, the drivers are downloaded from within Bootcamp Assistant. If you are running Snow Leopard the drivers are on your Snow Leopard install disk.
Read the Bootcamp Install Guide for your version of OSx. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Bootcamp questions should be asked in the Bootcamp forum where the Bootcamp gurus hang out https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp

I interrupted a software update and my macbook pro will not boot. I have tried to reboot using the startup disc, I have tried to verify the disc, and repair the disc. It tells me I need to erase and reformat the hard drive then reinstall the operating system. I do not have a back up of all my applications, my garageband music and other things. I also do not have time capsule set up on this machine, but I do have a 2 TB time capsule.
Is there anyway to back up this corrupted drive so I can restore my applications later?

There's an old saying.  If you don't have a backup disc, then there must be nothing important to backup.  That's just lesson #1.  Lesson #2 is to never interrupt a software update.  Not a good thing.
OK, I'm sure you know this.  It just upsets me to read your story, knowing you have a lot of important stuff on your hard drive, and didn't use time machine.
You're pretty much in a bad place.  My only hope for you is to boot to your Installation Disc, then using disk utility see if you can save the internal hard drive (by fixing what can be fixed).  You might be able to see your user folder and some of your apps.  I wouldn't even consider copying the library, because who knows what's been corrupted in there.
    Good luck.
