IMac running abnormaly slow with Leopard - Intel, 2GHz, 2GB

Hey All,
I've been having an issue with my iMac recently.. I've had it for almost a year now, its been running great till about 3-4 months ago. I mainly do Graphic Design and Photography so the hardrive was pretty full(about 20GB left) I figured this was, what, was causing my mac to slow down so much.. so I went out and bought an external hardrive 250GB I transfered all my files and several softwares. Even then my mac was still running slow. So I decide to clean out and start over using the Tiger OS CD, it took close to 7 hours to erase everything from the comp and install tiger back into my system.. When that was done I booted my computer and it would stay in the spinning gear screen for hours. After about 3 hours of **** and almost tears(LOL) it came back.. But STILL running slow. Even with nothing but basics in the computer!
A month later a friend bought leopard family pack. I thought maybe it would help. So we did a complete install of leopard. once again; deleting all old files; Which weren't much by that time. It took a good 19-20 hours to install leopard on the comp. Once it was done I booted and the same screen came up only it didn't take as long. The computer is acting a bit better, but still WAY too slow. It takes a while to boot up, and freezes almost constantly. I turn it on in the morning so its usable in the afternoon, I can only have basic softwares open ( Safari, iChat, Mail) if I start Photoshop etc it will work VERY slow! and crash to where theres no option but using the button in the back. I then thought, "maybe I need more RAM (since I had the stock 1GB) Maybe I fried the stock one." So just yesterday I bought 2 X 1GB for it. at first it wouldn't start, just the light would turn on, I toggled the Chips a bit and it turned on.. I CAN see an improvment.. Its still WAY to slow on boot up (it will stay on a solid blue screen for about 2-3 minutes) but doesn't take long to load my dock once its already on. It is working better, but still constantly loading with the now annoying little ball(I used to love that thing LOL)
I have nothing else to do - I am taking it to the Apple store this weekend.. Its a long drive! I was hoping I wouldn't have to.
Any ideas before taking it down there? Do you guys think they will be able to fix the problem?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this!
- Jose

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If after an erase and install frequent spinning beachballs occur without addition of third party software or hardware, usually that means the RAM has gone bad, or an internal hardware issue has developed. Do you have the original installer discs for the computer to run the hardware test from?

Reviews say Aperture runs really slow with Lion, any suggestions?
To add on to Corky02 answer:
The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing  the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or  ill-designedAperture databases.
Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also  repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.
To see, if you will want the advanced image processing in Aperture or the easy to use, more basic options in iPhoro will be sufficient to you have a look at the Aperture User manual, or the tutorial on the support page: Aperture Support
But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.

  • IMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9

    Hi,
My 2010 imac (i5, 4G mem) has been pretty slow since mavericks - the system seems slow and unresponsive with even simple operations seeming sluggish (my 8yr old core 2 duo laptop with 10.6 was way more responsive).
I came across the thread Re: iMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9 and hoped I might be able to get some advice.
I have previously reinstalled the system from fresh to see if this would help - and while it did for a while it seems to have become slow again.
I tried starting in safe mode and it didn't seem very different. Some operations seemed slower and the window redrawing was really choppy and a bit weird (not sure if this is usual in safe mode?)
I noticed that while I was running EtreCheck and perhaps also Diskutility just now (after running the imac in safemode and then restarting it) that the Finder kept restarting. All the icons would vanish and then reload in the finder window and on the desktop. I haven't seen this before.
I have installed and run EtreCheck and the results are below. If anyone could give some advice that would be really appreciated. Thanks

    Hi,
thankyou for helping. I think I have managed to follow both steps below. The errors that are occurring related directly to the finder crashing  - I am not sure if this is related to the general slowness but it would be great to fix.
    Thanks

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

    Yes, EEK!
Have you run Microsoft Update and installed the latest 14.2.4 Office update yet?
Humor me. When you perform copy, do you then establish keyboard focus by clicking the mouse pointer on the destination screen for the paste action -- before keying the paste?
Have you installed any third-party keystroke mapping software that may be getting between the operating system and these two applications?
Under System Preferences > Accessibility > Keyboard, have you enabled Sticky, Slow, or EEK! Keys?
In System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Keyboard & Text Input, doe the check marks look like the following:

Hello! Not out of the box: OS X Mountain Lion: About screen sharing  You'll have to look for third-party options like Teamviewer

  • MacPro  Running Super slow with Photoshop CS5

My MacPro is running extremely slow with Adobe Photoshop CS5. I have tried uppping the ram usage to over 14 gigs of ram and its still even slower than my macbook pro. the healing brush is the slowest, but even layer masking seems to lag a lot. how can I fix this?

There are dozens of threads, faq, guides, tips on how to configure a Mac especially for CS5. Best places to start.
    http://macperformanceguide.com/index_topics.html
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Intro.html
    Scratch drive or array
    Disable Spotlight on scratch
Move your files to scratch for work and then save as you go and move back to media drive when done
fast system drives. maybe even SSD if you can, or 10K 600GB VR
Upping RAM helps if you work with large images, layers, etc (in some cases 16 or 24 or 32GB, and if you can run in 64-bit mode get a little better).
    Some specs on the setup?

  • PC running extremly slow with iTunes

    Hello all,
Question is why my laptop would be running extremly slow with cover flow when it has more than enough horsepower to run almost any application (2.33 dual core, 512 graphics card, 2gig ram). iTunes runs just fine on my work laptop with cover flow, and its specs arent on par with my personal laptop. The only difference i can think of is that the work laptop (the good one) is running xp pro and the home is running vista 32bit. the other difference i can think of is that at home, all the music is stored via external HD while on the work laptop the files are stored locally on the laptops hard drive.
any advice would be greatly appreciated
    Cheers!

Vista has been reported to be a bit more buggy/laggy/unstable with iTunes. Music running of an external will also be noticeably slower and more jumpy than running off an internal. You answered your own question.

I want to buy a new mac.  Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?  And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.

davidfromdartmouth wrote:Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?
Specifically, after you buy a Mac test for RAM needs by calculating page outs as described below. The good news is that RAM is cheap enough that every Aperture user who can should upgrade to at least 8 GB RAM.
And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.
All 2011 Macs will "run" Aperture, but lesser CPUs and/or lesser GPUs will provide lesser performance. What "fine" is depends on your workflow and how demanding you are. There are some folks here happy with the power of the box you suggest.
    GENERIC UPGRADE ADVICE
Apologies in advance to those for whom this info is redundant.
Some general guidelines for operation of heavy graphics applications (specifically Aperture):
    • Only the strongest Macs will provide the strongest operation. Owners of weaker boxes (CPU, GPU, i/o, RAM) or older boxes will experience lesser performance.
    • There is a huge difference in hardware needs among workflows. A heavy pro workflow will only work best on a top well-equipped modern box.
    • As RAM prices continually fall RAM needs will continually grow. This has been true since the beginning of computing.
OS X has enabled Photoshop, for instance, to take advantage of at least 32 GB RAM for many years even though 32-bit operation limited direct RAM access to ~3 GB RAM.
    • All computers/OSs/workflows are different. Each individual user needs to carefully evaluate (meaning see what the early adopters report) workflow and hardware operation BEFORE upgrading any application or OS.
    • Hardware upgrades should be planned for always-increasing future OS/application demands, not just for today. After all, a computer purchased today is used for the next 3 years, not last year.
    • SSDs rock.  All users, all apps will benefit from using a solid state drive as the boot/apps drive. Strongly recommended. RAM-challenged setups will additionally benefit from 10x faster page outs.
    • All users should regularly evaluate their workflows by checking the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a work session; then rechecking after working. If the page outs number increased significantly during operation the workflow is RAM-starved and steps should be taken, such as increasing RAM or restarting and running only one app at a time - - or switching from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation. [Note: this is a manual calculation of any change in page outs. Ignore the cute pie charts, page ins, etc.]

  • My iMac is running extreamly slow with OS Lion! Help ?

My iMac is running extreamly slow 24hours after installing OS Lion! I don't think it is the Hardware as it only slowed down after it crached 24 hours after running fine! Help ?
My iMac is 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 8G of Ra

Same here. It's horrible. I'm using "fast user switching", but "fast" is not really the right term for it. More like, "excruciatingly slow user switching". It can take up to 15 seconds after I click the menu to switch users (from one logged-in user to another logged-in user) before it prompts for the password!  The load average is 0.77 - 0.84 and there's nothing running that is taking more than 9% of the CPU.  So it's just insane. Makes no sense at all.
I tried watching a video in QuickTime player, and it would play for a bit, then get *way* behind -- including delaying my controls/commands to the player.. I.e., it would pause for seconds at a time, during which I will have hit pause/play a couple of times, then maybe using a 2-finger swipe gesture, tried to scrub the video forwards/backwards. The video would have frozen during that time, but once it unstuck, it would do whatever things I'd asked it to do many seconds earlier, in sequence, with freezes in between.  While doing this, hitting "quit" (command-q) seemed to have no effect, until it finally caught up with all my inputs and finally quit.  I mean, this is crazy stuff. It makes no sense at all.
It's so slow, as to be entirely useless except maybe for web browsing. But actually using the machine? Not really going to work. I can't have people go up to the machine and click the user they want to use in the fast-user-switching menu, and then start to type their password only to have the text they're typing just show up in whatever app is currently active (whether it be finder or a program that actually lets you type, like Terminal). I can't understand how this could be so bad, especially given the load averages being so low and nothing hogging CPU.

  • Brand new iMac running very slow!

I just purchased brand new iMac on January 2nd (the specifications are below).  The computer seems to be running very slow just doing normal everyday tasks. I have barely even used the computer and the only installations I've done where the ones recommended from the app store.  I saw I had an itunes update the other day and went to install, the computer sat there for 5 minutes before it did anything.  After it installed the app store still had the badge icon #1 next to it as if it never installed.  During the installation I was listening to pandora, I tried to turn down the music and it took about 45 seconds before it turned down.  I finally tried to log out of my account and it took over 2 minutes to log out.
I haven't had the opportunity to mess with anymore since yesterday.  I feel a brand new computer like this shouldn't be running this slow.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I will probably be contacting Apple Support after I get off work and maybe even exchanging the computer for a new one.
    21.5-inch: 2.7GHz
    Specifications
    2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
    8GB (two 4GB) memory
    1TB hard drive1
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics

If you are referring to this icon for the App Store:
the red numeral 1 is to tell you there is an update available. It may even have started to download, and been paused.
As far as your Mac's performance goes the Apple Store is the place to take it. You have paid for a one year warranty, and of course there is the option to return it within 15 days. Good luck.
