IMac running really sloooooooow

Ever since I updated to 10.6.7 my machine has started to crawl. Spinning beach ball. Choppy video. iPhoto takes centuries to load. Every program takes forever to load for that matter. I did ALL the recommended stuff in the 25 Ways article and more. My iMac was more than adequate a few weeks ago and now I'm pulling out my hair. Or what's left of it. Please help!

Apologies some of us are not familiar with the 25 Ways article to know what you have done. This must be very frustrating for you as just doing that upgrade shouldn’t be so problematic.
Sometimes things can go wrong with the Software Update process and you could perhaps retry to update the software using the Combo package from Apple’s website (which is much larger).
Using Disk Utility (preferably after you boot from the Install DVD), have you repaired File Permissions a few times to see if that helps?
Do you have many gigabytes of free space on your internal hard drive?
Did you try to reset the PRAM and SMC just in case that makes a difference?
Have you ran the Apple Hardware Test (holding down the D key while restarting the computer with the Install disk or Applications disk inserted?
Looking in Activity Monitor, or About This Mac from the Apple menu, does anything look unusual or incomplete?

IMac running really slow

I have recently purchased an iMac (6 months old) and I am running 5 applications most of the time: three browsers (safari, chrome and firefox), MS Word and MS Excel. I do run a lot tabs open on the browsers and leave them on for days (about 12 tabs on each browswer). I have to use word and excel for work and need to leave them open with several documents at a time.
here are my problems... after a while, even when I restart, sites wont load, word wont respond and need to forcequit it, sites are slow and a lot of other problems where the computer will not respond for a few minutes and I am stranded looking at the rainbow wheel. I have a colleague sharing the same space with the same imac doing the same tasks plus using photoshop and illustrator but his imac is working fine. Is it something I should consult with Apple? is it a hardware failure? I also have time machine and from time to time it will give me errors that time machine can't connect to the drive or several other different errors.
I appreciate your input.

It really sounds like you're really taxing both the CPU and RAM.
With the description of the way you work with your iMac, it sounds as of you really need a lot more than 8 GBs of RAM.
OS X, alone, needs to a have a working minimum of 3-4 GBs of RAM to function smoothly and efficiently.
Your iMac can take up to 32 GBs of RAM.
I would advise installing another 4-8 GBs of RAM.
Also, is Spotlight still indexing your drives? This can slow things down, also.
Maybe your friend is running his iMac with more RAM?
As a designer, myself, I would put in as much RAM as I can afford in order to get Adobe Creative Suite to run as fast as I can get it to run.
Photoshop, alone can eat up lots up CPU,GPU, RAM and HD resources.

As you can see, i have nothing running and still the memory usage is over 4 gigs on Mavericks.
Yesterdag i upgraded my mac to 12gb of RAM memory.
Before my update and upgrade my Mac was running on ML and it was just running fine on 4 gb RAM.
And i had a lot of apps open. After the update, my Mac went to freeze all the time and the coloured ball was all the time on my screen.
I also have a MBA and this one is also going slow after installing Mavericks.
I hope that Apple finds its way back, because now im not amused of it.
I called AppleCare because of the 90 days help they give because of the update. And they also couldn't help me out. The employer who helped me, told me that he didn't heared it before and that my complain was the first.
After he saying this, i told him to look at those forums Apple supports. Maybe he could learn something of it.
If they don't solve these problems im going to downgrade my iMac and MBA to ML.
Hope that someone has got an solution or finds it pretty soon.

To add on to Corky02 answer:
The recent Aperture release AP 3.3.x is very efficient, both on Lion and Mountain Lion. But you need a decent hardware to support it. The older Macs will have problems with the storage and CPU requirements. For good performance on large raw images plenty of RAM is important, at least 4GB, but 8GB would be much better, and your library should be on a fast disk, preferably on an internal drive. And don't let the system drive get too full.
Many reports about Aperture being slow are due to putting the Aperture library onto slow disks or acessing the original image files over the network, insufficient RAM, or corrupted or ill-designedAperture databases.
Aperture excels at all kinds of image processing that can be considered image developement - raw processing and color/lighting adjustments, but does not do compositing. If you are shooting raw and want professional image developement I'd recommend to do this in Aperture and not in iPhoto - you will have much more control over this in Aperture (after a steep learning curve). You can also repair and retouch the image to correct minor blamishes. For graphics compositing and inpainting you can set up an external editor and send your images from Aperture to this external editor - any of the editors Corky recommended would be o.k. for this.
To see, if you will want the advanced image processing in Aperture or the easy to use, more basic options in iPhoro will be sufficient to you have a look at the Aperture User manual, or the tutorial on the support page: Aperture Support
But Aperture is a professional apllication, not "plug and play". You should only consider it, if you are willing to spend some time on learning to use it properly and are willing to work your way through the manual.

Slow Finder on iMac running OS 10.8.5

Hey Apple gurus!
I have a problem with my iMac running OS 10.8.5. It started from nowhere. All the software is running absolutely fine but as soon as I get to a finder and trying to open a folder and/or move between files in a folder within the finder or click a preview, a movie or a photo, it takes 10-15 seconds for a computer to "wake up". It just spinning until it finally catches is up and eventually it does what I want. Than I can browse in the finder between files with no problem until I pause for few minutes and when I am trying to navigate through folders again the same "wake up" problem. Its very annoying and really slows me down. I went through Apple utilities few times, I thought maybe its going to fix the problem, but it made no difference. I thought maybe its my USB devices and disconnected them all but still the same problem. Any suggestions how to fix it.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes. Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead. Thanks for any help.

I have had problems installing Elements 13 on an iMac running 10.9.5

I installed trial copy of Elements 13 on an iMac running 10.9.4.
All seemed fine...merged a panorama brilliantly. Filled in gaps...saved image.
Turned off iMac.
Next morning iMac would not turn on.
When eventually sorted with Apple tech support....iMac turned on and refused to print o Epson printer. Would print to HP.
Eventually had to do a harddrive erase and reload from internet.
iMac then behaved OK.
I would like Elements 13 but am very wary of installing inc axe the same thing happens again.
What reassurance can you give that Elements 13 is not bug ridden and will load Ok without screwing up my iMac completely?

Well, I would look around this forum. How many people are complaining that PSE 13 destroyed their Macs? Don't you think that if that were really happening there'd be plenty of posts about it and lots of articles on the rest of the internet?
There are a fair number of problems with PSE 13 for various people (as there are with any version), but ruining hard drives isn't one of them.

How can i get my Imac, running OSX 10.6.8 with a 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, how can i get Final Cut Pro 4 and DVD studio pro 2 to run on it?

I just bought an IMAC running OSX 10.6.8 (not sure what flavor that is). The processor is 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (Late 2006). When i run Final Cut Pro 4 on it I get the following error.
                    "Configuration error
                       This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing
                                * AGP graphics Card"
If Final Cut Pro 4 doesn't run on my system, what version of Final Cut can I run on this as I am a filmmaker and really am comfortable with Final Cut Pro.
On the same note I also have DVD studio Pro 2 and that just quits without any message.

This is my first mac in a long time so i'm not sure about what this mac is as i didn't buy this from apple (ala Amazon). I'm a tad confused about the Intel/PowerPC thing. I do know the software version for sure, but the Intel/PowerPC is very confusing. I just need to find someone who would know about this question. It doesn't say G5 on this computer. Why does my 27" iMac running OS 10.6.8 hang on the grey screen at start up?

My 27" iMac, running OS 10.6.8, has started running slowly when loading Apps and when running Safari. Also, when powered, on It has started stopping on the grey screen before the Apple logo displays. To get past this I must turn the Mac off and then back on. Does anyone know what would be causing this behaviour and what I should try for a fix?

It could be a sign of an impending harddrive failure. If you don't backup regularly, I would strongly suggest you start. Don't run ANY anti-virus software as it really messes with your system and if you do regular software updates you'll be fine there.

hi alan i run a business on ebay selling photos and negs. i recently installed yosemite and it locked my entire library on iphoto. when i try to download the app to free it from ishop it tells me there is a fault with the app and my iphoto is frozen. i am basically out of work and finding it very hard to find someone who can help me unlock it.. look at the things being said about this yosemite locking this.....freezing that... be very careful if you need your business for your livelyhood. the actual performance is really good.....better display ...much faster and well presented but is it worth having parts of your compy put out of action i possibly think not. i am new to this community so hopefully someone reading this may be able to advise us both.....paul

All other high end software works perfectly including 3D rendering software.
27" iMac mid 2011.
16gb of RAM.
Over 100gb free hdd space.
Radeon HD card 2GB.
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7.
I have tested on tiny low quality images as well.
I bought this with the bundled Premiere Elements which is also unusable even with the smallest and lowest quality video file.
iMovie works fine as does other video editing software. I ONLY have an issue with Photoshop and Premiere Elements 12.

I'm curioous if anyone can tell me if I can upgrade my IMac running Snow Leopard can be upgraded and have the capability to run the new, more feature rich Lion software?
I'm a recent convert having just migrated from PC platform to mac and honestly I need to spend some serious quality time on my learning curve. I was browsing through the Apple Store when I saw an upgrate opportunity to Lion. Once I read the list of improvements, I was sold -- I really want Lion even if it costs an addional $300. My fear, however, is that I'll purchase the Lion software only to find out that it's incompatible with my older Mac running Snow Leopard.

It turned out that WD is the big bad guy in this game.
According the data rescue company where I asked for an inspection, both of the drives had their reader head loose. And in the one, which was my already-in-use disk its even damaged the platters... xxxxx
So its time to pay bunch of money to recover, and take a walk to wd service to bang on the desk.
Also note - it may be somehow related to intellispeed technology - since macs not really friendly with wd-s built-in solutions.
On the other hand, with WD GP 1Tb there is no problems at all for ages.
