IMac running slow, spinning wheels and regularly crashes.
Hello
I am suffering similar symptoms to others here who have then been asked to post their logs for scrutiny by experts prior to advice or recommendations.
Could I impose on you to run an eye over my data? I have run disk utility many many times over the past few months with no signs of improvement. In fact, the problem is now getting worse day by day.
Kind Regards

You, also, have too many apps launching at startup/login and running in the background when not n use.
You need to pare the number of apps that launch at login/startup to six items or less (preferrably less).
Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.

I have a quad core 16gb ram mini and it keeps getting the spinning wheel. Running slow and Itunes always crashes!
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Runs slow, spinning wheel of death comes often..
I have an early MacBook Pro Code Duo laptop. 2 Ghz, 2Gigs of RAM. Since loading Snow Cat it seems to be running slower and selecting just about any application or moving from one open screen to another causes the multi-colored wheel of death to raise it's ugly spinning head. Illustrator routinely crashes on the first try then opens normally after restarting it.
Can anyone tell me how I can increase the speed and eliminate the appearance of the SWOD? Oh yeah and it's runs hotter than heck in no time flat... Oh yeah and Spotlight seems to take forever to give me back control of the search function.Do a search on this forum about "Cache Cleaning" or "Cache Clearing"
Maybe look at this: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16494
I have a MacBook Air with a 64gb SSD, Intel Core 2 Duo and 2Gb Ram. I do not have the spinning beach ball so I suspect the problem is with your system.
Do you have AppleCare on your Laptop? Can you run Techtool Deluxe or something similar to verify drive function? If you have 15gb free but 10gb of that is bad or unusable, you'd have swap file problems that would slow performance. -

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -
IMAC running slow- not responding- and would not accept my administrator password.
I have a iMAC Intel with 3.06 GHz. i have had it for about 4-5 years. In the last year or so it has been running slowly, and recently i had to fix a printing issue, so i entered the administrator password, and it said it was incorrect. I know it was correct, it was the same one I have used for 5 years! So in order to fix the password problem, I had to re- create a fake administrator and password. My husband and I are getting very frustrated, and sometime s the thing wont even open up a page, it just freezes, or if it does open, the little rainbow circle comes on like its thinking, and goes really slowly. Help!!
You can find out how much space is left on your iMac's hard drive by, clicking once on the Macintosh HD icon and the using the keyboard key combination Command-I
This will give you all of the info about your iMac's hard drive.
Your iMac model is a late 2009 21.5 inch screen iMac.
It can take a total of 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
Installing the RAM is very easy to do for a non-computer tech or novice user to do.

Macbook pro running slow - spinning wheel but still space avail?
Is there anything that I can do to speed up my macbook pro?
System is up to date, and there is space available. I've checked CPU - I think there is probably a lot of double ups on information stored on computer but not sure how to do a clean-up without loosing originals....
Any help would be greatly appreciated? In laymans terms if possible, as clearly I'm not as technically knowledgable in this area (also don't have much &'s to spend on clean-up software - so cheaper options or ability to fix thru what is already available to me is best!)
Thanks in advancehttp://www.ehow.com/list_7483714_ways-up-macbook-run-faster.html
I like to follow this one.
No information will be lost and i've had good luck with it in the past. -
Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.
If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins. -
Hi
For past year or so my mac book has been getting gradually worse. Spinning wheel, and overheating, last night I had trouble just getting it to start in Safe Mode (been using the on/off button a lot lately!)
Problem may be related to media - iMovie followed by iPhoto are the most likely programs to bring everything to a stop but not always.
I'm not an expert although I did figure out how to re install the operating system from the partition with help from this forum a couple of months ago but it didn't fix the problem.
The iOS is Mountain Lion (via Lion)
I managed to do a back- up last night and now wondering if I should re- install Snow Leopard from the original discs that came with the laptop.
Got a lot of media on there (replaced the 250gb drive with a Samsung 1tb a while back which is less than half full.
Never had to use any of my back-ups before so:
If I re install the original operating system will I be able to be selective in what I put back on later?
and -
Will there be any issues putting a Mountain Lion back-up into a Snow Leopard iOS?
A lot of whats there isn't needed but don't want to lose it completely.
Advice appreciated thanksBack up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU|I/O' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the window will be empty. If you get output like this:
kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error
the boot drive is failing, or there's some other hardware fault in the storage subsystem.
If you get output like this:
kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info Start **
kernel[0] <Debug>: ** GPU Debug Info End **
there's a fault in the graphics processor or logic board. The two kinds of output are not mutually exclusive, but if you get both, a logic-board fault is likely. -
My iMac locks up constantly in email. I click on one or two emails. Then when I click on another email, I get the spinning wheel and have to relaunch. Why does it get confused and lock up? Seems like it is stuck.
10.6.8 here, MacBook Pro. Comcast. Mail freeze ups. Occasional warnings to use "Log Out" under the Apple icon.
Disk Repair run several times. Shows lots of Java "remote" issues.
I run Disk Repair several times, shows a lot of Java, "remote" issues.
Restart don't know if it helps, I do it all the time. What's with quitting Mail but it doesn't quit, and why a separate maneuver to "Log Out".

I keep getting the spinning wheel, and macbook pro seems to be slowing down. How do i fix this without buying software?
Go to system profiler and report back the amount of RAM that you have.
Make sure that you have at least 20% of your hard drive free.
Make sure you don't have a lot of items on your desktop as that can slow things down.
Quit applications that aren't responding or you aren't using and won't be using for a while.
~/Library/Caches Quit all applications and delete this folder. Do a regular delete then do a secure erase on all the items that won't delete.
If it only happens with a certain application (Safari for example)...
1. Quit the application (Safari)
2. Open ~/Library/Preferences and find the file for safari (com.apple.Safari.plist).
3. Put the file in the trash. Do NOT empty the trash yet. Open the application and make sure everything's ok. Now you can delete the file. In Mail if you trash the file, you will get rid or your setup.
Make sure that your dashboard doesn't have too many widgets and use Activity Monitor to see what it's using.
There are ways to disable if you want to.
Make sure that all of your software is up to date.
Repair permissions (it can't hurt)
Don't have a lot of login items.
Your internet browser shouldn't have a lot of extensions.
I hope this helps

1st problem was IMac running slow. Shut down and unplugged several times with no correction. Eventually, shut down, unplug and reboot resulted in wallpaper background eventually coming on screen but no icons. Nothing after that.
Kurt, do you know which exact iMac this is?
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Does it do better if allowed to cool off for a couple of hours?
What do you see if you hold Option or alt key at bootup?
Does it boot from the install disc holding c key at bootup?
