IMac running very hot on Mountain Lion

My iMac cores are running between 67 and 83 degrees celsius. I am running Firefox and iMovie is analysing 4 minutes worth of video for stabilization. I know this is a common problem, but does anyone know of a coming solution?

The fans are working fine, I dread to think what the temp would be without them.  It means that my once "silent" iMac now has fans running most of the time, this means it isn't silent anymore and I do a lot of recording. It's pretty much why I bought the iMac.
I'm hoping Apple fix this issue.

  • Why is the fan in my iMac running so much after Mountain Lion update?

For some reason, I seem to notice the fan on my 4 year old iMac running constantly, even with very few processes running (only Mail and Safari) after the upgrade to Mountain Lion. Anyone else have this problem? Anyone have a solution?

Sorry, guys (or girls), but NONE of this worked. I shut down, pulled the plug, restarted, Zapped the VRAM, restarted, several times...I mean, at least 4. There were NO major processes going on according the Activity Monitor. And with only Mail open, the fan began to run at high RPM (HD fan at 1486, CPU fan at 3896, CPU temp 41, CPU heatsink temp 41, GPU Diode temp 95, GPU Heatsink temp 90) almost immediately...and it has yet to go off. I suspect it won't do so until I leave it alone and it "sleeps" for a while. I have read that other people have this problem too, and it clearly is related to something in Mountain Lion, since that was the triggering event. I believe Apple must be advised that this is a software glitch, and they should work on getting a patch out to us.
Any more advice? I'd love to hear it.

  • Imac 27" 2012 Mountain Lion running very hot

Please help. My 27" IMac running very hot, especially top left corner. Is there a fix.
    Tony R

A couple of things.  First, do you know what the internal temperature are? if not, look into getting the widget istat from slayer.  It will show you something like this:
You can monitor the fan speeds and temps.
The iMac should speed up the fans in relation to the temperatures against a profile determined by Apple.  If for some reason, your fan speeds are low and the temp is sitll high, you may need to reset your SMC.  That is the shutdown, unplug, wait, plug it back in, restart maintenance proceedure.
If everything is working properly and you still don't like the temperatures, you can download SMCfancontrol.  This applications allows you to speed up your fans manually or set higher minimums.
Lastly, iMacs to get hot and are designed for it.  Apple wants to keep the fans speeds down so the system is quiet.  If you play lots of games, or doing a lot of GPU/CPU intensive work, it is normal for the chips to hit 70C at the case and the fans to be clearly audible.  If you were expecting to work the machine hard but the aluminum backside to be just warm, that won't happen.

  • My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • Why is my MacBook Pro running hot after mountain lion upgrade?

The fan is on high all the time and the system is running very hot. It also consumes the battery way faster than it used to.

Thanks for your links.  My MacBook fan was running constantly from switch on and the underside was getting very hot.  Using your first link, I followed the Activity Monitor instructions and found that Dashboard was using '117%'.  As soon as I closed it down the fan instantly slowed and after only a few seconds switched off..
    Thanks again..

  • My iMac gets very hot

Just got my new iMac which I am very happy with, but after an hour or so of use it runs very hot. The upper left and right corners are extremely hot-almost too hot to touch for longer than 15 seconds or so. Is this normal ?

Very normal. This usually occurs when doing intensive tasks. The back of the iMac acts like a large heat sink to dissipate heat. Mine gets very hot at times as well.

Firstly you have to be very careful as these fonts are system fonts and are critical to the operating system.
I'm no expert I just followed the advice in this link.
    http://indesignsecrets.com/removing-nonessential-system-fonts-in-leopard.php
It worked for me and now the font works in illustrator without converting to paths before creating pdfs.
    Hope this helps...

Why is my iMac (G5) not compatible with mountain lion? I have 4 GB ram (667) and around 90GB hard drive space.

iMac G5 can only be upgraded to 10.5.8.
If you have continuing use, you are among the lucky ones.  I purchased many of these used from a company that shut down its American office.  Many of these eventually suffered from the "bad capacitor" problem and required a motherboard replacement from Apple.  I was lucky in that my local Genius bar approved these for no charge, even though Apple's extended warranty had expired.
My last one was my desktop Mac.  It's power supply failed in 2010 and I paid for a replacement.  In Summer 2011 when its HD failed, I decided it was time to move on and purchaed a Mac Mini, which I continue to run on Lion.

  • Desktop is running very hot

Hi.  My desktop (iMac 21.5" from 2009) is running very hot since I downloaded Maverick OS X.  Is there a way to find out if it is running TOO hot or if it's ok?

Does the computer seem to heat up when doing a particular task or is it an "all the time" thing?
Can you answer the following questions for us?:
    1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
    2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimization" applications?
    3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
    4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
    5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?

  • Mid-2010 Macbook Pro running very hot

    Hi all,
My mid-2010 Macbook pro is running very hot. On average CPU is 61-70 degrees Celsius, sometimes even more. I'm pretty bad at having lots of chrome tabs open and heavy multitasking, but even when I'm not temperature still ends up very high and fan rpm can get to over 6000. Heat seems to be concentrated to the lefthand side of the touchpad (battery area?). I'm running 10.9.3.
Current stats below from iStat pro widget (smcFanControl concurs with these temps), with only the following pic's activity running. Laptop currently balanced on two books (so airflow around the sides) which are in turn on my lap.
I have tried reseting the SMC with the shift-control-option-power method but it doesn't seem to have worked - instructions said to press and hold this, then release, then press power again to boot, but laptop boots up from this combination anyway.
Am I just doing something wrong or will this be an expensive trip to the apple store to fix?

    Hey happyhaskins,
If you are having an issue with your MacBook Pro running excessively hot, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -

  • Why is Safari running so slow under Mountain Lion?

Why is Safari running so slow under Mountain Lion?

I have other mac's on my home network that are still running Snow Leopard and the are performing well. I wanted to use the iCloud so I upgraded and instantly started experiencing the slow down, to the point of ridiculousness. Other function are mixed some normal speed, others a day on the beach with the spinning ball. Firefox is at full speed, good thought, haven't checked Chrome yet.
Last night and hooked into a projection unit that adjusted my screen resolution for a presentation and after the event my Mac reset back to the normal settings and Safari launched and is running normal speeds so far. In the past there have been issues with performance speeds and certain resolutions, has anyone had similar luck or is this a fluke?
